laurel police department, all on the scene. the officer was transported by the maryland state police to shock trauma. no word yet on that officer's condition. reporting live from sky eye sky eye chopper 13, i'm captain jeff long. back to you. >> okay. we do have a crew en en route to the scene. we'll bring you developments as soon as they become available. maryland is seeing the first snowfall. the western part of the state is getting a light coating, while temperatures are dropping. wjz has first warning weather coverage. denise has more on what people in garrett county are dealing with. it's something many people are not ready to see yet. take a look at this picture from oakland, garrett county, snow falling steadily and covering cars there. also in garrett county, this is what it looked like earlier today on route 50, in table rock. a view from a traffic camera, showing us a snowy picture. this isn't unusual for that area either, it's just actually kind of late. if you live in western maryland and you'd like to send us

pictures of this winter-like weather. go to cbsbaltimore.com, and click on the link at the top of our home page. >> denise, thank you. obviously no snow here, but temperatures are dropping. take a look at live temperatures now. but is it colder than we've seen in a week? i think it is. taking a live look outside right now. sunny skies ask seasonal. but cooler temperatures. bob turk is in the first warning weather center with more. bob? >> neighboret county, it's cold. that's for sure. 2,000, 3,000 feet. it's a lot colder than it is here east of the mountains. temperature-wise now, garrett county, 32 in oakland. 46, cumberland. so as soon as you get up into the high elevations, as to the temperatures in the 30s. and that's why they've seen wet snow today. we're picking up about maybe a half inch, quarter inch on the grass. 49, hagerstown. 50 in ocean city. and 56 over in d.c. 54 up in elkton. the dew point is low. which means it's going to get cold tonight. but we do have, for tomorrow

night, more importantly, a frost and freeze advisory, and a freeze warning. west of us, temperatures likely to get at or even below freezing mainly those areas north and west of town, tomorrow night. so if you had tender plants out, bring them in sometime tomorrow. otherwise, frost may just kill those plants. kai? >> bob, thank you. a big boost for baltimore. amazon announces it's going to build a new warehouse in charm city, bringing 1,000 jobs to the area. wjz is live in southeast baltimore, near the proposed site. linh bui is there, and proposed the move and its massive impact. linh? >> the new facility will be built here on brokenning highway. -- broening highway. amazon is simply trying to bring products to customers much faster. >> reporter: amazon is coming to charm city. creating 1,000 full-time jobs for baltimore. >> it's a good day.

i'm pleased with the work that was done to make that happen. >> reporter: the 1 million- square-foot facility will be built at the former gm assembly plant in the port of baltimore. it will look similar to this warehouse. >> reporter: this location in baltimore, is one of eight new warehouses planned across the country. according to amazon, each city has a very large consumer base. >> amazon is moving toward same- day delivery. and the new fulfillment center would serve the baltimore, washington area. employees will pack and ship goods to the consumers. >> since i'm into building maintenance, that would be perfect for me. and i love that kind of work. i've been doing it all my life. >> reporter: amazon says iting pay more than the average retail jobs. plus, benefits include 401k, healthcare and prepaid tuition for college. >> i will apply. i will be the first one there. >> reporter: anna says this will energize the area and could attract other fortune 500 companies to baltimore. >> a place gets hot. all of a sudden, they realize, places are going there.

they look at our demographics. and they think, maybe we should be thinking about baltimore, too. >> reporter: state leaders say this is more proof that baltimore is open for business. >> reporter: heads up, if you shop on amazon.com, once the center opens, all maryland residents will have to pay sales tax. reporting live in southeast baltimore, linh bui, wjz eyewitness news. >> i can't wait for that. thanks, linh. no word on when construction or hiring will din. one of baltimore's oldest supermarkets shuts its doors for good. santoni's in highland town is closed for good. the family-run store opened in the 1930s. the owner said the city's bottle tax is to blame for him going out of business. the mayor disputes that, claiming that the tax is the sole reason for them closing. several have reportedly expressed interest in taking over santoni's space. a student at a high school in northeastern massachusetts is being held without bail, in

connection with the death of one of the school's math teachers. now, investigators are trying to figure out why she was killed. vinita nair has the latest for wjz. >> reporter: 14-year-old phillip chisholm stood before a judge wednesday. he was arraigned in connection with a death of a popular math teacher, at a high school, outside of boston. police were called tuesday afternoon, after the boy didn't return home, from danvers high school. >> we didn't know if he was kidnapped or hurt somewhere. so we went around looking for him because we cared about him, obviously he's on the team. and we liked him. >> reporter: another call came tuesday night, about a female teacher who was also missing. >> danvers police initiated a search for the teacher and discovered blood in the second- floor bathroom at danvers high school. >> reporter: police found the body of 24-year-old colleen ritzer in woods behind the school. ritzer's relatives say she had a passion for teaching and that she lived at home with her close-knit family. she had taught at the high school for two years.

>> she was one of the nicest teachers to danvers. always went out of her way to talk to you. always just saying hi to everybody. it was a real tragedy. >> reporter: early wednesday morning, police located the missing 14-year-old boy, walking on a nearby road. police would not say how they tied the boy to ritzer's death, or how she was killed. students who attend the high school describe the suspect as pleasant and soft spoken. he was a top scorer on the score's junior varsity soccer team. >> i met him in lunch a few weeks ago. and he just seemed like a normal kid. it wasn't likey he was a troubled kid. >> reporter: students plan to hold a candlelight vigil tonight, near the school. vinita nair, wjz eyewitness news. >> chisholm is being held without bail. he is due back in court, november 22nd. in baltimore county, jury deliberations continue in the malpractice trial of dr. mark meday. medei.

>> hi, kai. you know, i left the courtroom about 10 minutes ago. and it still appears the jurors are having a tough time, reaching a unanimous decision. they started deliberating about 11:00 this morning. and they're slowly heading there sixth hour of deliberations. >> reporter: after hours of deliberation, jurors continued to struggle in the malpractice lawsuit against dr. mark medei, on whether he gave unhealthy stents to wealth businessman, glen wineberg. >> what i did was anything i would. for myself, anybody in my family, my mother, father. they were treated appropriately and with the highest regard for their well being. >> reporter: the $150 million lawsuit being decided at the baltimore county circuit courthouse accuses medei of giving wineberg, unnecessary stents. this is just one case of hundreds of lawsuits accusing the doctors of misdiagnosing their condition. >> dr. medei said it was 90%.

after they reviewed it, it was 10%. >> reporter: the higher the number, the greater the need. st. joseph's medical center is also named in the suit. medei also served as the medical center's director of the catheterization lab. >> reporter: and since beginning deliberations two days ago, the jurors have sent four notes to the judge, saying they are unable to come up with that unanimous decision and they are ready to end. reporting live, rochelle ritchie, wjz eyewitness news. >> rochelle, thank you. dr. medei resigned from st. joseph's medical center in 2009. he lost his medical license in maryland, two years later. the naacp names former u.s. house of representative miller as interim president and ceo. the civil rights organization is beginning a search for outcoming ben benjamin. miller announced his resignation in september but is

expected to stay with the organization until the end of the year. annapolis high school is cracking down on twerking, grinding and other provocative dance moves at school dances. this year, it's prioring students who plan to attend to sign and have their parents sign a dance contract. wjz is live. monique griego has more on what the state contract -- or what the contract states. monique? >> reporter: by now, a lot of people have heard of twerking because it's been in the news a lot lately. it's definitely one of the dance moves that was baned in this contract. the contract is very clear, if you you don't get it signed, you won't be allowed in. >> reporter: search you tube, and thousands of dance videos of teens twerking, even at school. but one place you won't see this craze is at the annapolis high school homecoming dance this weekend. school leaders are requiring students and parents to sign a dance contract that bans sexually explicit behavior. >> there is, like, some

grinding, i guess. but that's every school in the county. >> there is a lot of stuff. this people getta -- get away with a lot of things. >> the contract is very clear. no grinding, touching or touching buttocks into the air. those that break it will be removed from the dance. >> dances have become more provocative in recent years. and we've had issues at schools, frankly. >> the dance contract is nothing new. but having parents sign it is nothing new. and this year, students say it's a lot more specific. >> reporter: nine of the 12 schools in anne arundel county have some form of contract. not all requires signatures. specifics are up to the principals. >> i think it's fair. because some kids need to turn it down. >> reporter: students believe that the increased attention is due to things like twerking. miley cyrus stirred up controversy after twerking her way through an mtv performance. >> they would never know what twerking is. >> but even parents who signed

the contract weren't sure it would be effective. >> schools have to do something like this. whether it will be 100% successful, i doubt it. >> reporter: and in addition to the ban on certain types of dance moves, students are also told they have to dress appropriately and cannot show excessich amounts of-- excessive amounts of skin. >> monique, thank you. we did call several other districts. none of them had a district- wide policy, regarding school dances. the decision is left to the principal. here's a story that might have you jumping into middle river. a ravens super bowl ring is somewhere in it. not only do players get a ring. but so does the full-time team employees. receptionist tony lakiss was at a boat party in essex, when her boyfriend accidentally dropped her ring from this year's past victory into the water. luckily for tony and her boyfriend, the nfl approved sending her a replacement ring.

it's partly cloudy and 52 degrees in central maryland. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. we continue to follow that breaking news out of howard county, where a police officer has been shot. let's go to captain jeff long. are we hearing any information about the conditionaf that man at this point? >> no. we do know that they were taken to shock trauma. the helicopter that took them took them to shock traum a. here in laurel, howard county, had is washington boulevard. huge police presence, as there's still a suspect on the

loose in howard county, near this scene. an officer was responding to the 9500 block of washington boulevard. that officer was struck. now they're looking for a black male, with short, black, cropped hair, black jacket. and wearing gray sweat pants. and right now, route 1, through laurel, remains shut down in both directions. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13. i'm captain jeff long. eyewitness news has a crew on the way to the keen. we'll pring you the latest information as it backs visible. raising eyebrows about future in gaming pat warren has more. >> officials are saying that they believe caesar's casino, the casino in baltimore will go forward as planned.

but the state is asking questions. >> we made tremendous progress. >> but a federal investigation has the state digging. >> reporter: they have falled out over alleged ties to crime. the maryland lottery says they are concerned about these alleged incidents and thou it promotes integrity, transparenty and fair play. >> i think we're still on track. and i remain excited about what it means for jobs. >> as far as the allegations are concerned, the gaming control agency states, we are

gathering information and will give these laters the eangz they deserve. >> caesars says it does not have expect the investigation to have have impact on casinos whatsoever. >> the maryland gaming control agency was doing some surveys today for a sixth maryland casino in prince george's county. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. well, a lot of act 50 out there. watch for delays from timonium to belfast. average speed only about 25 miles an hour. west side inner loop, stop and go past liberty road. northbound 95. delays from 32 to 100.

tonight, particularly, do keep a wrap. it will help you stay warm. we're talking about wind chill tonight. if it's 35 and the wind is blowing 10 miles an hour, it feels more like 20 -- 29 to 30. right now, the actual temperature in oakland is 32 now. we're down to 52, 20 degrees warmer than out there. and 57 in easton and pax river. 56, annapolis and kent island by the bay. further west you go, much lighter. 15-mile-an-hour winds. around the east coast eastern sections of rain. just offshore and moving away. but to the west, a little snow here in ohio this morning.

columbus had 45, but they're now up to 46 degrees. a little lake-effect show here in p.a lakes are very warm. you have this cold air. it picks up that moisture, goes up a hundred feet or 1,000 or so and it cools and condenses. still snow showers going on. fairet county most places have seen the rain-no mixture. the front that came through with the showers, south of us now, will stay in the school and dry air. into the weekend. but by saturday and sunday, this high will move off a little bit. winds go back to the south and southwest. by the weekend, should be dry and sunny to mostly sunny.

we're continuing to follow that breaking news out of howard county. a police officer has been shot in howard county. and meghan mccorkell joins us live from the phone. >> reporter: we just arrived a short time ago. i can tell you, there is a massive police presence shutting down route 1. we're told the officer was called out here for hospitals of a man with a gun. very busy crossroad. we're told gunfire was exchanged. that officer was flown to shock trauma. the description given it us is a man with short black hair. we heard he ran off route 1.

we've seen major, major units being brought in the entire road is being blocked by police cars. we are told that two dozen officers are assisting in the search. again, a police officer, shot today. the suspect is still on the loose. we're expecting a police briefing within the next 15 minutes. and we'll bring you more information from that. for now, live from laurel, meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, megan. thank you. we will continue to bring you the latest on eyewitness news at 5:00 and 6:00. and we have even more breaking news. this time, out of baltimore county. a jury has reached a verdict in the multimillion dollar lawsuit against dr. mark med oohi. a former doctor at st. joseph's medical center. the jury has found him liable of malpractice. on one of one of his patients.

the lawsuit claimed medei claimed he had heart disease when he did not. and another developing story from baltimore city this time, where several students were taken to the hospital after becoming sick. about five students ingested what police are calling a questionable substance at the reach partnership school this morning. the students are being evaluated to determine what it was. police are involved in this investigation. we'll continue to follow that. the search for a missing 14- year-old autistic boy, who disappeared in new york city earlier this month, now spreads to surrounding states. wjz is live in north baltimore. derek valcourt explains, why some search efforts have spread right here to maryland. derek? >> the 14-year-old avante aquendo really loved trains. that's why a huge part of the search for the missing child was really focused in new york's train system. now, officials aren't ruling out the possibility that he may have boarded any train, even one bound for maryland.

>> reporter: 14-year-old avante aquendo was last seen october 14th on surveillance video on his queens new york school, running through halls alone and leaving the building. the autistic boy is nonverbal, with the mental capacity of a 7- year-old, according to his now distraught family. >> every day, we're just supporting each other, trying to keep our spirits up, hoping to hear some good words. >> reporter: new york police launched a massive search, involving hundreds of officers. they searched by air, in the water, on ground and below ground, in the subway system. family members say he loved all trains and might have gotten on board one. >> if he would have gotten on a train, it probably is just to ride, a couple of spots. i don't think he'll ride it days days days and days. >> reporter: but authorities aren't taking any chances. that's why this missing persons flyer has been circulated to surrounding states, including maryland.

his brother danny once played football for the university of maryland. flyers have already been distributed to all law enforcement in maryland, and throughout amtrak security. >> the number 1 reason that a child is recovered is because someone saw their photograph. so that's why it's imperative to get it out there in the public's high. >> reporter: reward for avanti's save return is -- safe return is now up to $90,000. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. so far, more than 6700 volunteers have helped with the search for the missing boy. well, the struggle continues to fix the problems on the government website that americans are trying to use to sign up for healthcare insurance. technology experts are now lending a hand. and as tara mergener reports for wjz, congress is demanding answers. >> reporter: obama administration officials briefed congressional democratting this morning on what is being done to improve the health insurance website. >> i don't believe that the president is going to allow days and weeks to go by without marked improvement in the

website's capabilities. >> disappointing. >> reporter: republicans were not invited to the session. >> clearly, there's problems with the website. but i would argue that the problems go much further than that. >> reporter: healthcare.gov is set up to allow americans to shop for health insurance. but it has been plagued with problems. house republicans released a video they say includes actual excerpts from an online health chat with a potential customer. >> clicking save and continue does not allow me to move forward. >> don't lose your sanity over this website. try it. if it doesn't work, walk away, try it tomorrow. >> reporter: some gop lawmakers, including congressman paul ryan, are calling for health and human services secretary, kathleen sebelius to resign. but in an interview, she put the focus on fixing healthcare.gov. >> people are frustrated with the website. but the product is there, the prices are good. >> reporter: the deadline to sign up for insurance is march 31st. but many are calling for the

obama administration to extended open enrollment period, because of so many problems with the website. in washington, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> cbs news has learned that the healthcare website's new shop and browse feature often gives applicants a cheaper estimate because consumers don't enter their exact age. a white house national security official is off the job tonight because of what he posted on social media. vic is in the newsroom with the late over the this for us. vic? >> a senior administration official said joseph posted sometimes insulting messages on twitter under a fake name. he was the director of nonproliferation. he was fired for messages sent to the account called at nack sack wonk. that account has since been deleted. one of the messages said, and i quote, so when will someone do us a favor and get rid of sarah palin and the white trash rest

of her family? that is a direct quote from that account. mary, back to you. >> all right. thank you. joseph has apologized for his posts, saying they were mean- spirited and inappropriate. boston bombing suspect killed by police, is now linked to a triple homicide. tamar lan tsarnaev was being questioned by police. in september 2011. in that case, three men were found in an apartment with their necks slit. and their bodies reportedly covered with marijuana. federal prosecutors found out about the incident while working to make the case against tsarnaev's brother in the marathon bombings. a maryland production company is turning tragedy into a powerful learning tool. educating high school and college students about the dangers of relationship violence. wjz is live. jessica kartalija joins us now with this story. jessica? >> reporter: good evening, mary. good evening to everyone. the one love foundation is really focused on the younger

generation, trying to inform them about the hazards of relationship violence, before it becomes out of control. >> take 1. and action. >> a home in monkton is transformed into what looks just like a hollywood movie set. but this story has a powerful message. >> all you have to do is say one in three. one in three in baseball is a great average. one in three in relationship violence is terrible. it's gone unrecognized far too long. >> reporter: kim watkins is the ceo of renegade communications. partnering with the one love foundation to create a digital educational piece about relationship violence. >> we do anything to try to prevent another family from going through what we had to go through. and it thrills us to think that people will pay attention to this and get out and save themselves. >> reporter: sharon love started the one love foundation in memory of her daughter, yeardley, a university of

virginia lacrosse player, beaten to death by her ex- boyfriend. >> reporter: the presentpation ation -- presentation is part of a campaign aimed at 16 to 24- year-olds, highlighting the signals of relationship violence. samantha abel plays the main character, paige. >> there aren't that many opportunities to do something in the art where you feel like you're making an impact on someone. >> renegade and one love have also created anaciment -- an assessment app. >> turn our tragedy into a positive. and honor yeardley in that way. she'd want us to do something about this. >> reporter: the presentation will be available online for schools and colleges. there's also an interactive portion to get students involved in participation. we're in baltimore city tonight. jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, jessica, thank you. the final presentation will also have women giving very personal accounts of their

experience with relationship violence. we're updating the breaking news. there's been a verdict in the malpractice trial of dr. mark medei. rochelle ritchie has the breaking details. >> reporter: hi, kai. i just walked out of the courtroom. and i can tell you right now, that dr. mark medei and st. joseph's medical center, has been found liable of breaching standard care in the case of glen wineberg. he's a prominent bethy businessman-- wealthy businessman who is behind the development of maryland live casino. this dates back six years or so, when dr. mark medei is accused of putting cardiac stents into the hearts of patient -- patients. this is a $150 million lawsuit. the jurors in this case have been deliberating at least two days. can they certainly seem to be struggling with coming up with that. today, they started deliberations at about 11:00 this morning.

brain. marlie hall reports for wjz. people with higher blood sugar levels may be more likely to have memory problems. that's according to a new study of older adults who did not have diabetes. german researchers found those with high blood sugar levels had lower scores on memory tests. >> people that had the elevated blood sugar levels had worse memories, worse retention. >> people in the study also had less volume in the area of the brain that is important for memory. some studies showed type 2 diabetes may increase the risk for dementia, including asheimer's -- alzheimer's disease. lowering blood sugar may be ways to prevent memory problems, even with people with lower levels. >> a healthy lifestyle is key for keeping blood sugar down. >> exercise is fundamental. in conduction with that, to eat, you know, a good diet.

alphonso van marsh reports with more on the royal christening. >> reporter: little prince george appeared to wave at has grandmother as he arrived for his baptism. but it was really his father moving his hands up and down. proud parents, prince william and kate opted for a small affair, including his parents and hers. siblings, and of course, her majesty, the queen. no tv cameras allowed in the chapel for the 35-minute ceremony. just one croz chosen photographer, who snapped the only pictures of the king, being splashed with water from the river jordan. >> reporter: the future king will have plenty of support as he grows up. the duke and duchess have named seven gopped parents. >> reporter: the archbishop of canterbury said it was a huge honor to baptize the third in line -- to the british throne.
