we have been watching more and more police officers arrive here on the heen in laurel. we want to show you what that scene looks like now right. police from all over the state are seafght in the search. route 1 is shut down. this after officers were called to the scene of a reported gunman in the 9500 block of washington boulevard. one officer was hit. that officer has now been flown to shock trauma. but the gunman fled. the description we'reet ging is a man in his 30swith a black jacket and gray sweatpants. but as you can see, there is a massive police presence out here. we've seen police from laurel county, mont bomry county, assisting in the search for the gunman. and we have learned that laurel

police have set up a tipline for anyone with information on this but again, a police officer has been shot. and tonight, the gunman is still on the loose. we'll continue following this developing story. >> and of course, our complete coverage continues thou with jpt jeff long. with more on the impact on traffic conditions. >> as you can see, the police presence is massive. and they're got both lanes of route 1 shut down. this say busy time of day. and with this being shut down, they're having to divert traffic. northbound traffic is being forced to turn and divert onto whiskey bottom road. as you can see, there's a lot

of cars here. 32 a huge area cordon often with police tape. that means, given the fact that an officer was shot, there's going to be a lengthy investigation. so at this point, it could be several hours before this road is opened again. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13, i'm captain jeff long. we will continue to follow the story and bring you more information as it becomes available. hear breaking muse at this sometime. a jury has reached a verdict in the lawsuit against dr. mark meday. >> this verdict comuft coming down about an hour ago. after two days of deliberation, a jury did find that dr. mark medei did breach medical care standards. >> reporter: after hours of dlkdzs, jurors find dr. mark

medei guilty of malpractice. >> what i did, i would do for my father and mother. they were treated preparely and with the highest regard for their well being. >> reporter: the lawsuit accuses medei of give giving wine erg, unnecessary stents. this is one of hundreds of lawsuits. >> dr. medei reviewed and said it was 90%. but after they review it, it was 90% -- 10%. >> reporter: medei worked as an independent contractor at the hospital, serving as the director of the catheterization lab. >> terns on both sides of this case are unable to speak because of a gag order issued at the beginning of the of the trial. phase 2 is expected to start on

monday. that's when they'll discuss that $150 million lawsuit. we're live tonight, rochelle ritchie, wjz eyewitness news. >> dr. medeiei resigned and lost his medical license two years later. mary is live in the newsroom with the latest. police confirm approximately five children may have injested a questionable substance. they all attended a reach partnership school in northeast baltimore. they were transported to the hospital this morning. no word on the ages of the student. they are being evaluated to determine what exactly the substance was. baltimore city's child abuse division is working the hospitals and the state's attorney on this case. it remains under investigation. we'll continue to follow it. vic? >> reporter: mary, thank you. it serves students in grades 6 through 12. a big boost for baltimore.

employees will pack and ship goods to consumers. >> since i'm into building maintenance. that would be perfect for me. i love that kind of work. i've been doing it all my life. >> it will pay more than the average job. plus, benefits include 401k, healthcare and prepaid tuition for college. >> i will apply. >> reporter: this will energize the area and could attract other fortune 500 companies to baltimore. >> a place gets hot. all of a sudden, consultants realize, businesses are going to that area. they look at our demographics. they say, maybe we should think about baltimore, too. >> reporter: state leaders say this is more proof that baltimore is open for business. >> but heads up, if you shop on amazon.com, once this center opens, baltimore residents will have to pay sales tax. no word on when construction or hiring will

begin. amazon announces its plans to hope in baltimore. the family run judiciary store opened in the 19nirts. the owner claims it was the bottle tax cause of the accident him to go out of business. several national and super market chains have reportedly shown interest in taking over sant tony's space. some areas are already seeing snow. in western maryland, a steady stream. and also, here's a picture of what people are seeing in oakland. it's only, as i remind you, october. here, snow snow for maryland. just a mix of shun and clouds today. >> i the some nice pictures they it see about half an inch

in some spots. take a look at temperatures up there in garrett county. freezing at 32 degrees. 46 in cumberland. we're at 51 here. 50 in ocean city. biewcht biewpt is low. dry air in the region. could be freezing temperatures north and west of the city. most of the area will see frost and freezing. if you have sender plants out mant plants, if they're still out there and you want to keep them alive, either cover them up her or bring them in. frost tomorrow night and freezing temps will probably kill a lot of plants. tomatoes will probably be gone. record for tomorrow is 25 degrees. we'll be above that. that's certainly going to be

chilly for this time of year. denise? >> thank you, bob. a student at a high school in northeastern massachusetts is being held without bail, in connection with the death of one of the school's math teachers. now, investigators are trying to figure out why she was murdered. vinita nair has more for wjz 13. 14-year-old phillip chisholm was arraigned for the both of a mar math teacher. police were called tuesday afternoon, after the do i didn't return home. >> we didn't know it if he was hurt somewhere. we went around looking for him because we cared about him. >> another call came friday tuesday night about a female teacher who was also missing. >> police discovered blood in the second floor bathroom at danvers high school. >> police found the body in

woods behind the cool. relrelatives say she had a passion for teaching. she caught at the high school for two years. >> sheeft one of the nicest teachers. always saying hi. -- it's a real tragedy. >> police located the boy walking on a nearby road. police would not say how they tied the boy to ritzer's death or show she was killed. police describe the suspect as pleasant and softspoken. he was a top scorer on the soccer junior varsity team. >> i with the him and he seemed like a normal kid. >> students plan to hold a candlelight vigil tonight. >> chisholm is being held without bail. he is due back in court, november 22nd. the naacp names former u.s. house of representatives clerk

lorraine miller as interim president and ceo. the civil rights organization is searching for outgoing leader, ben geles. he announced his resignation in senate, but is expected to stay with the organization through december 31st. the search for a missing 14- year-old autistic boy now spreads to surrounding states. >> vic, you can file this one. just in case. turns out, this young boy loved trains. so authorities have spread the word to other states, including maryland, just in case he got on a train here in baltimore. >> reporter: 14-year-old avante oquindle got on a train. running through the halls alone and then running through the building. the autistic boy is nonverbal with the mental capacity of a 7- year-old, according to his distraught family.

>> every day, we're just trying to support each other. trying to keep spirits up. hoping there's good word. >> new york police launched a massive search. they searched by air, in the water, on the ground, and below ground, in the subway system. family members say avante loved all trains and may have gotten on board one. >> couple of stops and get off. i don't think he'll ride it. >> but authorities aren't taking any chances. that's why this missing persons flyer has now been circulated to surrounding states, including maryland. even though searchers have no direct evidence avante may have come to this state, where his older brother danny once played football for the university of maryland. flyers have already been distributed to all law enforcement in maryland, and throughout amtrak security. >> the number 1 reason that a child is recovered is because someone saw their photograph. so that's why it's imperative to get it out there in the public's high. -- eye. >> reporter: the reward for avantee's safe return, now up

to $90,000. we're live, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. so far, more than 6700 volunteers have helped with the search for that missing boy. johns hopkins university regains a five-year, $70 million federal grant from the sthiewt institutes of health. the money is designed to change how researchers pursue development and other medical treatment. the grant comes through an nia program, known as clinical and translational since awards. the university of maryland baltimore lost its first bid for a similar grant. a growing black bear population means more bears are being hunted this week in maryland. wjz went to the western most part of maryland, where the hunt is centered. but alex demetrick reports, like the bears, the hunt is spreading. as deep creek lake settles into autumn, trucks pull into a check-in station, carrying dead, black bears. there is no restriction on size or age during the annual hunt. but there is a promise.

>> but we promised all along is that we would never wipe out the bear population with this well-regulated hunt. >> reporter: nine years ago, when it started, there were 900 bears. today, it's at 1,000. so the hunt quota is up. >> this year, between 95 and 130 bears will be taken. as their range has spread from garrett and allegheny counties, east, into washington and frederick counties. >> we're averaging about three cubs per cell. >> reporter: the goal is to control that growth. >> the hunt is achieving that for us. it's slowing the growth. but bear population continues to grow. >> reporter: but groups opposed to the hunt see that control as unnecessary. >> we've heard these arguments time and time again with department of natural resources. but we have to look at the land mass out there in western maryland. it's a huge land mass for these bears. >> reporter: only bears, seeking more room, are being spotted in maryland backyards. and because of crop damage, farms have become hunting grounds. >> he made a hard right, went

as we have been reporting, a police officer has been shot. and the search for a suspect is now still under way. wjz is live at the scene. meghan mccorkell has more for us. >> reporter: it really is an all-out search for the suspect. as we have been standing here, we see more and more officers ons scene, on route 1 here in laurel. just minutes ago, i spoke with an eyewitness who told me that

he actually saw that police officer get shot. he told me that there was a man outside of a red pickup truck, who was pacing alongside of the road. now, officers were called out for a possible gunman in this area. they say when the officers approached that man who was pacing, that man fired at least five shots at that officer. he says that the officer fell to the ground, onto the grass. he said the gunman, that eyewitness tells me the gunman jumped the guardrail, ran into the woods nearby. they say the officer's partner tried to chase the gunman and started firing shots into the woods. but it appears that that gunman did get away. the only description we really have of him is a man in his 30s, wearing a black jacket and gray sweat pants. now, we have learned that the officer that was shot is in serious condition. he is at shock trauma tonight. and as you can see, there is just a massive police presence out here. i can't tell you how many police cars continue to arrive. we've seen prince george's

help in that search for the gunman. now, this all started several hours ago. when police were called out here to route 1 in laurel, on a report of a gunman, pacing along the side of a street here, on the 9500 block of washington boulevard. we're told when officers approached that man, he opened fire, using a handgun on one of the officers, striking him. now, i just spoke with an eyewitness minutes ago, who says he was driving on route 1 and saw the whole thing. >> the gunman got out of the car and shot at an officer, striking him. then he fled across the street, hopped the guardrail and ran into the woods. and then by that time, he had at least a five-minute head start before police started heading into the woods. >> now that eyewitness told me that the injured officer's partner did chase that gunman into the woods, fired shots at the gunman, but the gunman did get away. nows we're told the injured officer is in serious condition.

but it has been plagued with problems. they are plagued with problems including online chat. >> clicking save and continue does not allow me to move forward. >> don't lose your sanity over this website. try it. if it doesn't work, walk away. try it tomorrow. >> reporter: some gop lawmakers, including congressman paul ryan, are calling for health and human services secretary kathleen sebelious to resign. but in an interview, she put the focus on fixing healthcare.gov. >> people are frustrated with the website. but the product is there. the prices are good. >> reporter: the deadline to sign up for insurance is march 31st. but many are calling for the obama administration to extend the open enrollment period. because of so many problems from the website. tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> cbs news has learned the healthcare website's new shop

boyfriend. the presentation is part of the campaign aimed at 16 to 24-year- olds. highlighting the signals of relationship violence. samantha abel plays the main character, paige. >> there aren't really that many opportunities. >> renegade, and one love have also created a danger assessment app and public service announcement to help prevent relationship violence. >> turn our tragedy into a positive. and to honor yeardley in that way. she'd want us to do something about this. >> the presentation will be available for schools and colleges online and will have a student version for people to participate. jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> final presentation will have women giving personal accounts of experiences with relationship violence. changes for the zero

tolerance policy on the way. it's a change board members have considered for more than three years. some parents fear it's too lenient. >> back in 2011, 15-year-old nick stuben committed suicide, shortly after woodson high school leaders suspended him. nick had purchased a legal drug on campus. and the fairfax virginia school had a zero tolerance policy. in that same year, talbot county school leaders suspended two lacrosse players, for packing pen knives knives and lighters in their bags. they were items needed to fix their sticks. the boys had never been in trouble before. but soon after their suspension, they faced criminal charms. >> charges. >> charge him for having a deadly weapon for a two-inch pocketknife is ridiculous. it's such a waste of everyone's time. >> those are just two cases, causing safe school board members to consider broad changes to the student code of conduct. for instance, a student caught bullying other children, gets a 10-day suspension, under the

current code. but if the new policy is approved, that student could be forced to write an apology letter or go to mediation with the victim. so what if the student brings drugs on campus? well, now they're slapped with a 10-day suspension. the proposed code calls for community service or in-school suspension. the school board says this proposed plan will keep students in class longer. but some fear it will only make schools less safe. >> i would have problems sending my son to school, in an environment that i didn't feel was safe and secured him. that's my number 1 job as a parent. >> parents like devon roths child, who live in carroll county, have written to the state school board about the changes. she said the proposed code strips away. >> they know our staff. they know our students. it would be a real shame to take that control away from the local board of education. >> reporter: wjz reached out about the proposed changes. the school board says it does not comment on policies that have not yet been approved.

meghan mccorkell has the latest on what happened. captain jeff long is in sky eye 13. >> that search continues to grow and grow. we watched the state police have now arrived here on the scene in route 1, in north laurel. where an officer was shot, earlier this evening. now, howard county police have briefed the media in the past hour. here's what they say happened. around 4:00, howard county police officers responded to a call of a gunman, pacing along route 1. three officers responded to the scene. police say when the officers came upon that man, that man immediately fired upon them, hitting one of the officers. the other two officers returned fire. but the suspect jumped a guardrail and ran into the woods. and tonight, police are using every resource available to find that gunman. >> right now, there is an active search for the shooter. we don't know his whereabouts. we've got helicopter, k-9, and

surrounding jurisdictions, assisting us in the search. >> reporter: now, the officer that was injured is said to be in serious condition at shock trauma. the howard county spokesman said that that person, that officer is alert. now, the gunman is described as a black male in a black jacket, with gray sweatpants in his 30s. lots of different jurisdictions are assisting in this investigation. laurel police have started a tipline for anyone that has information on that gunman. that phone number tonight is 240-294-1307. again, anyone with information on the gunman is asked to call the tipline. reporting live in north laurel, i'm meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> and our complete coverage continues now with captain jeff long in sky eye chopper 13 with more on the impact this is having on the area. jeff, we've seen so many cars in the area. have you seen any searches in the woods at all?

>> we did see some of the vehicles going up, a power line right away. which is right there on the right side of your screen. kind of dark. hard to show it right now. the only search we saw is a civilian walking through that area. they stopped, had him get on his knees. searched him. eventually let him go. but the driveway on the left- hand side of the screen, that is the driveway that goes up to the place where this actually happened. 9500 washington boulevard. there were a few vehicles coming out of there. that's a storage area. and we saw two vehicles in the last 10 minute the, come down that driveway. police stopped the vehicle, talked to the drivers, opened up the trunk, took a look before letting them proceed. as far as the rest of the traffic, nobody is getting through route 1 in this area right here in laurel. everybody northbound is either turning around or exiting onto whiskey bottom road. everybody southbound being forced to turn around or turn on gorman road.
