state are looking for man who shot a howard county police officer. wjz and mike schuh are live outside shock trauma downtown where that officer is being treated. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning. at last check 30-year-old offick is in serious condition here at shock trauma. now there's a $50,000 reward to find his shooter. >> it starts around 4:00 yesterday. police receive a call about a man pacing outside this red pick up truck along route 1 holding a handgun. the man identified as 29-year-old stephon prather. he opened fire, hitting officer steven houk, just 2 years on the force. then the man ran off. >> i heard the gunshots. >> aaron said he watch ed ed officer houk collapse as prather took off running. >> as the gunman jumped over the guardrail and ran into the woods another officer was running along the guardrail firing shots into the woods.

>> it's not known if prather was hit. from sky eye chopper 13 you can see the densely wooded area. >> we have helicopters, dogs, officers on foot. >> police are telling residents to take precaution. >> he should be considered armed and dangerous. we encourage any member of our community who may believe they see him or know where he's at to call us at 911. >> officer houk is expected to recover. >> i got a chance to speak with him. he's under the great care of the fine men and women here at shock trauma. we are blessed to have this wonderful resource here in baltimore. >> reporter: prather, it's the second time he's been wanted. the other time was in north carolina, it was a case of breaking and entering. i'm mike schuh reporting live down at shock trauma. back to you. >> thank you. anyone with information on prather's

whereabouts should call howard county or their local police department. in northwest baltimore city police say a man who appeared to be breaking up a fight of high school students is dead. according to the baltimore sun police say a group of students got into a fight yesterday near bell avenue and garrison boulevard. when an adult intervened he was stabbed and died at the hospital. one other person is wounded but expected to be okay. prosecutors say the dead boston marathon bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev was connected to a triple murder. his friend told officers he participated in the killings. three men were found with their throats slit on september 11th, 2011. he was killed during a shoot out with police. his younger brother, dzhokhar is being held at a medical facility. a conviction is overturned.

now michael scacle wants to be released. he's the know few of robert kennedy. the judge ruled his attorney failed to adequately represent him and ordered a new trial for him. here a verdict is in. a towson jury finds dr. midei liable in a lawsuit. he's accused of putting unnecessary stints into hundreds of patients, including a prominent cal developer. here is rochelle richie. >> it took the jurors two days to reach a verdict. they struggled to come to a decision. >> attorneys for the plaintiff in the case against mark midei walk out in victory after six jurors found midei breeched medical care standards in the care of glen weinberg. he claims he lost $50 million in business after scaling back to

deal with matters of the heart. he was the director at st. joseph. >> what i did is what i would want for myself, my mother, my father. they were treated appropriately and with the highest reward. >> attorney byron morgan said many are not argued. >> you have to go through about 100 cases before you find one case that's good enough. so the vast, vast majority of these the lawyer rejects because there isn't a case. >> in 2009 st. joseph medical center sent letters to hundreds of dr. midei's patients warning them they may have received unnecessary stints. >> midei said it was 90%. after they reviewed everything 0 %. >> the percentages were for blockages in the blood vessels. dr. midei was in the courtroom

when the verdict was read. he showed little to no emotion. >> damages are expected to be discussed next week. today police are investigating a strange incident at a city school that led to five children falling ill of eating or using something. the students were taken to the hospital from the reach partnership school in northeast baltimore city. it's not clear what the substance was or where the students got it. the child division is work being the hospital. amazon.com is choosing baltimore to open its next fulfillment center. today leaders are applauding the news. linh bui has more on potential impact. >> amazon, the online retail giant is coming to charm city creating more than 1,000 full time positions. >> it's a great day for baltimore and i'm very pleased

at the work that was done in order to make that happen. >> the 1 million square foot facility will be built at the former gm assembly plant in the port of baltimore. it will look similar to this warehouse. >> this location in baltimore is one of eight new warehouses planned across the country. according to amazon each city has a large consumer base. >> amazon's moving towards same-day delivery. the new fulfillment center would serve the baltimore/washington area. employees will pack and ship goods. >> that would be perfect for me. i love that kind of work. i've been doing that all my life life. >> amazon said it will pay 30% more than the average retail job plus benefits include a 401k, health care and prepaid tuition for college. >> i will apply. i will be the first one there . >> economists said this will bring energy to the area and could attract other fortunate 500 companies to baltimore. >> they realize business is

$1.1 billion. the team's stake in masn, ticket sales and sponsorships put them over the 1 billion mark. they are one of 10 billion dollar baseball teams. >> most of the teams on that list i think you'll find there's a large broadcast entity. >> yeah, the yankees are number one. they say most of the money comes from yes network, yankees entertainment system. >> so it's the angels, the o's, the rangers, the phillies. not on the list would be the marlins, white sox and the mariners. >> yeah. >> and the oakland a's. >> there are bigger cities than baltimore that aren't there. >> yeah. it all has to do with the broadcasting. i want to show you

good morning. it's 40 degrees right now. actually, it just dropped to 39. these are realtime temperatures. now 39. 75% humidity. a bit of a breeze out of the southwest now at 3. generally throw the day a northwest flow at 8 to 10. barometer is a 29.98. oakland now at 30, many areas in the upper 20s in western maryland. 39 cumberland, 37 hagerstown and elkton, 46 easton, 39 ocean city, 40 pax river, almost 40 columbia and westminster, 37 bel air, low 40s annapolis and kent island, 45 rock hall. none of this unexpected to be quite honest. it's actually going to be a very, very nice five days sun wise. total sunshine for the next five days. we're going to stay on the chilly side, averaging 10 degrees below

6:24. maryland's black bear population is growing. hunters are being allowed to harvest more of them. state officials have raised the limit that can be hunted. wjz is in western maryland where the hunt is playing out right now. here is alex demetrick to explain while natural resources police say it's a good thing. >> as deep creek lake settles into autumn trucks pull in and out of a department of resources check-in station carrying dead black bears. there's no restriction on size or age. there's a promise. >> what we promised is we would never wipe out the bear population with this regulated opportunity. >> there was 500 bears in maryland when it started. today it's estimated at 1,000 so the harvest quota is up. 30 bears were taken the first year in 2004. this year between 95 and 130 will be taken as their range has spread from garrett and allegany counties east into washington and frederick

counties. >> we're averaging about three cubs per hunt. >> it's slowing the growth. the bear population continues t. >> groups opposed to the hunt see that control as unnecessary. >> we've heard these arguments time and time again from the department of natural resources. we have to look at the land mass that's out there in western maryland. it's a huge land mass for these bears. >> only bears seeking more room are now being spotted in central maryland backyards. because of crop damage, farms have become hunting grounds. >> he made a hard right and went up the edge of the corn field. i was about 80 yards away and took a shot. >> the bear this gentleman took was a prior nuisance bear that we captured. this is a hunt that directly targets some of the problem bears. >> alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> hunters aren't the only ones taking black bears. 50 bears have been hit and killed by vehicles during the past year. that's about half the number that's being hunted. next up this morning right

blessed to have is this wonderful resource here in baltimore. >> reporter: so there's a $50,000 reward for the apprehension of prather. 2 years ago in north carolina he bolted from police after a traffic accident stop. i'm mike schuh reporting live from shock trauma. don, back to you. >> thank you. anyone with information about prather's whereabouts should call howard county or their local police department. the search for a missing autistic 14-year-old in new york city has now expanded to the state of maryland. he was last seen october the 4th on surveillance video inside his queen's new york high school. he's running through the halls there. eventually the surveillance cameras show him leaving the building. family members say he loved trains and police are not ruling out the possibility he boarded one to come here where his older brother played football for the university of maryland college park. the reward for his safe return is now close to $90,000. a massachusetts 14-year-old is being held without bond this

morning for the murder of a high school teacher. the story for wjz. >> students and parents held candles and each other as they remembered colleen ritzer, a popular math teep er -- teacher at danvers high school. >> it was shocking. i couldn't believe someone woult to her. everyone loved her so much. >> she was remembered in a moment of silence before game 1 at the world series at fenway park. >> more shocking is the person charged with the crime, 14-year-old student phillip chism. they were each reported missing by friends and family when they didn't return from school tuesday. court papers say the two knew each other but did not elaborate. >> danvers police initiated a search for the teacher and

discovered blood. >> chism was picked up early wednesday morning walking along a highway. investigators arrested him based on statements he made and on school surveillance video that recorded the assault. chism pleaded not guilty and could be tried as an adult. the high school will be open for students to speak with counselors on thursday. >> chism is due back in court on november 22nd. federal investigations are raising concerns over the ceasar's horseshoe casino under construction. they pulled out after a massachusetts project over an investors ties to organized crimes. one out of its las vegas businesses is the target of a money laundering investigation. ceasar's does not expect it to impact the casino here. it's expected to be opened by the end of next year. the developers of the

troubled healthcare.gov website are expect today appear before a congressional committee this morning. here is tara mergener with the latest. >> developers for healthcare.gov will head to capitol hill this morning for hearing about the website that's been slow and unresponsive. >> the roll out of obamacare is nothing short of a debobbing l. >> cgi federal, the main contractor takes partial blames. it said the ultimate responsibility is with obama administration. >> it's our job to hold them accountable. when it comes to obamacare there's a lot that needs to be held accountable. >> even supporters are upset. >> i believe someone should be is held accountable. >> rick nolan said the president needs to man up, find out who is responsible and fire them. >> the frustration that lawmakers who supported the affordable care act feel over

the fact that a portion of it is not functioning at the level we want it to function is frustration shared first and for most by the president. >> some democrats, including senator joe mansion are calling for a 1-year delay of the $95 fine for not buying health insurance, saying americans shouldn't be punished for the government's faulty website. in washington, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> the white house said it's opposed to any delay in the individual mandate. it says besides the website there are three other ways that americans can buy health insurance on the market exchanges. come this monday they'll be no smoking this parks in hagerstown. the ban includes all city-owned parks in the downtown university plaza. the greens and golf course and designated areas at municipal stadium are exempt. it carries a $20 fine for the first and second violations and a $200 fine after that. more this morning about the pet treat deaths.

a stronger warning for the fda about the jerky treats that may be sickening and killing thousands of dogs and cats across this country. here is kai jackson with more on the treats made in china. >> the fda has received nearly 4,000 reports of sick cats and dogs. it dates back to 2007. it's -- it'sest move through thd estimated that 580 -- est it's estimated that 580 pets have died. >> vomiting, diarrhea ande -- >> jersey -- jerky treats have been associated with this syndrome. >> the fda has been unable to pinpoint the problem. for pet owners like robin pier waiting is frustrating. >> you can't have so many

incredible about it, the fabulous baltimore arena became the home base for wwf, now the wwe. frankly their monday night raw evolved from shows downtown at the arena. it's the same with show gun, mma if you will. what is with the baltimore arena and contact sports? >> baltimore is a blue collar town. we're big sports fan, support the ravens and orioles. i think that people here are -- it's kind of a rough and tumble town. i think people enjoy rough and tumble sports. you know, the wwe now, it's a big entertainment industry. people really enjoy it. for us, i was fortunate to be able to get the law passed here. you know, now we're drawing 5,000, 6,000 people down to the arena to come and see the show.
