this sh wjz tv baltimore >> from the city to the counties to your neighborhood. now, it's complete coverage. it's wjz maryland's news station. hello again. i'm jessica. here's what people are talking about today. anne arundel county delegate don dwyer appears in court in connection with a drunken boating charge and a separate drunk driving case. mary is in the news room with the very latest. >> jessica, a judge accepted dwyer's earlier guilty plea to that drunk boating charge sentencing him to 30 days in jail. dwyer also pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle while intoxicated to which the judge sentenced him to another 30 days in jail. the boat crash occurred on the river last year. seven people, including dwyer, were injured in that crash. dwyer admitted to having a blood alcohol level of.20. that's two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

back in august, almost exactly one year after that boat crashed, he was stopped for drunk driving on route 100 near pasadena. dwyer will serve those 60 days consecutively in jail on weekends. the sentence is set to start on november 9th. jessica. >> mary, thank you. dwyer was also placed on three years' probation. any violation, and he will go to jail for a year. wjz is in court for the sentencing. we'll bring you reaction today at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. and we have more breaking news to tell you about regarding this week's shooting of a howard county police officer. 29-year-old steven stephen prather is out of the hospital and formally charged with allegedly shooting officer stephen houk. houk was shot wednesday afternoon responding to calls about prather walking along washington boulevard in laurel with a gun. houk is recovering. prather is wounded in that gun battle. he faces a host of charges including attempted murder. and even more break news right now. nearly 17 years later, new

riflations in the jonbenet ramsey murder case. newly-released court documents reveal a 1999 grand jury vote today indict jonbenet's parents john and patly for child abuse resulting in death and being an accessory in crime including murder. the district attorney decided not to file charges due to what he said was insufficient evidence. the 6-year-old beauty queen was murdered in her family's home in 1996. in 2008, a district attorney said that new dna evidence cleared the parents in her death. another day of cool temperatures on tap for our area. the baltimore zoo, our maryland zoo in baltimore rather, parents and kisd all bundled up in coats and hats. many are also staying warm in their cute halloween costumes. taking a live look outside right now, clear, crisp fall weather outside. so are we in for a chilly weekend? wjz is live with first warning werth coverage. marty is out there in a non-denin coat, which has been

retired, but first meteorologist tim williams is up dath these chilly temperatures. good afternoon, tim. >> good afternoon, jess. that's the breaking news. i didn't know marry te tired his coat. we did get very chilly last night. temperatures gone up about two degrees in the last minute or so. very cold out in oakland. 52 down on the shore. 51 in elkton and 51 smack dab in the middle. the dew point is 31. we are one degree colder today than we were this time yesterday. yesterday we were locked in the 50s. that's where we topped out. did not hit any records last night. 24-hour lows, the past 24-hour lows stayed in the 30s except for oakland at 28, but we did not get to freezing. we got to 36 degrees. 34 in hagerstown. we did get a little colder down on the shore. how long will this cold air persist and is there a break in sight? for more on that, sending it out to marty. >> hey, tim, jess, i had that coat on yesterday, and my wife

looked at me and said, "honey, that coat is done." >> the end of an era. >> i took the hint. let's take a look at the graphic we have for you. it is going to get a little more moderate with temperatures as high pressure slips offshore. temperatures will get back to around 60, 62 degrees, which is only a degree or two below normal, and that trend will actually start tomorrow, but having said that, we're in for another really cold night, colder than this past. we're actually forecasting a low of 32, and we already have frost advisories and freeze warnings in effect. midnight through 9:00 a.m., many counties around the metro going down to 32 degrees, possible widespread frost. well, we are going to get a warmup, as i mentioned. how warm is it going to get? it's going to be spring again? meteorologist tim williams with those details coming up shortly. now, we throw it back inside. >> marty, thank you. the fbi launches an investigation into a balt mar city police unit.

according to our media partner, the baltimore sun, they're look into claims officers in the violent crimes impact section falsified reports to protect informants and continue making arrests. investigators say they're acting on a tip from a former city police investigator. rich burg reportedly made the claims after being charged with federal drug and gun offenses. the search continues this noon for the person or persons who stabbed a man to death after he try today break up a fight in northwest baltimore. city police say 25-year-old durrel gaskins was killed trying to stop a fight between high school students. the killing happened just a few blocks from forest park high school. police have not said if the attackers are students there, although witness say the attackers did have on the school's uniform. a thrill ride at the north carolina state fair leaves five people hurt, two critically. veneta reports for wjz. the ride started up as passengers were trying to get off last night. >> state inspectors are checking

out an amusement ride that left several people injured, some critically at the north carolina state fair. the ride called the vortex came to a stop and then suddenly started up begin throwing passengers to the ground as they were trying to get off. witness say several people were knocked unconscious. >> we did have one complaint monday night. the ride inspectors did what they were supposed to. they went and checked it out, and everything was work properly. >> the vortex spins, twirls and flips riders upside down. the rides are supposed to be inspected three times a day, and officials want to know if the vortex got regular inspections. >> it would be great if we could stand up here this morning and tell you exactly what happened. unfortunately, we're not to that point yet. >> a carnival company in georgia owns the vortex, but a different company was in charge of managing the ride. despite the accident, the fair is open today.

it's sunny and a chilly 51 degrees in central maryland. right now, your complete first warning werth forecast is coming up. demolition gets underway at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. work began at the site this morning. officials say the project will take several weeks to complete. 20 children, 6 adults were killed at the school last december. earlier this $6 adults were killed at the school last december. earlier this month, newtown residents accepted a 50-million grant from the state to reconstruct a new building at that site. the obama administration is trying to contain a diplomatic crisis over intelligence leaks. european lawmakers are travel to the u.s. next week to investigate widespread spying allegations. tina has the very latest for wjz. >> together at a summit in brus els, germany and france are demanding the u.s. agree to a no-spieg deal with their

certainly be great. all right. tim, it's going to be another cold night, but it is going to start getting a little more back to normal. let's talk about it. >> we certainly will. moorty and i talked about yesterday. with paris, maybe just a one-dog night. we are look at another chilly night, very cold in some areas. freeze warning in effect from midnight to 9:00 a.m.. all these areas shaded in blue, freeze watch for tonight first time the eastern shore has not really been impacted yet but looks like it's starting to creep that way. marty talked about this. let's show you how this is going to start plague out. temperatures going to moderate through the weekend. we'll get a little bit warmer than these temperatures in the 50s. 39 in oakland. 52 in ocean city. 50 in elkton. 46 in westster. wints from the weshgs northwest. as a result we have a small craft advisory in effect. the winds are picking um. our temperatures are going to start to even out across the region back toward detroit, chicago, still almost ten degrees colder than we are here.

that's still the direction of that northwest wind. as high pressure starts to move off to the east it's going to allow for more and more of that milder air from the west and southwest. we're going to start tapping in to conditions closer to our normal, which is now 64 degrees, our high. we're going to start to see temperatures again as that high starts to ease off, get a little bit milder heading in toward halloween. so this last weekend, we are a little chilly today. we're going to be a little cool tomorrow, but, again, as we start to get into sunday, monday and tuesday, you start to see more 60s in the forecast. our sunset today is 6:13. small craft advisory in effect through 6:00 today going up to about 54 degrees, pretty much where we were yesterday. mostly sunny. kind of a carbon copy day. then 32 degrees tonight. for tomorrow, a little bit milder looking at 59. moets mostly sunny. that's a pretty nice saturday when thinking about how october could be. >> pretty. jean,s, sweater, football, love it. >> apple cider >> this time last year, we were recovering from superstorm sandy. >> yeah, we sure were a year ago. still to come on wjz
