news. >> wednesday, they plan to grill health secretary kathleen sebelius, while the president plans to defend it in boston. a group of sheriff's deputies in frederick is bringing about change in the state. >> the state has formed a new commission to form interactions with people with disability. ethan saylor died during a confrontation. they were trying to remove him from a movie theater, despite protest from the aide who was with him. it includes public safety officials, prosecutors, agencies and advocates for those with disability. >> a grand jury declined to indict the sheriff's deputies in ethan saylor's death. a baltimore firefighter and his girlfriend did not use his service weapon. police say 37-year-old

christopher robinson killed andrew hoffman and marie hartman, in hoffman's house, before taking his own life. family members say he was unable to get over a breakup. president obama's twitter account was hacked. although the account it was was not compromised. a group claimed responsibility saying, quote, obama doesn't have any ethical issues with spying on the world account so we took it upon ourselves to return the favor. end quote. one year ago tonight, super storm sandy barreled into the northeast. dozens of people were killed, and there were billions of dollars worth of damage. in dozens of coastal communities, it's a day to remember. though it's not in daily headlines, the recovery continues. vinita nair reports. >> reporter: one year after

super storm sandy damaged or destroyed 2,000 homes in breezy point, new york, there are signs of rebirth and regrowth. volunteers marked the anniversary, planting sea grass, on top of a new diewrn that was set to protect the towns. there is still a lot of healing to do. and the heal suggest far from over. >> right now, every conversation we have leads to hurricane sandy. i look forward to the day when we move beyond that. >> reporter: it was a day of community service here in breezy point. and dozens of beach towns in new york and new jersey. sandy was a $60 billion storm, the second most costly in u.s. history. >> everything was donated. >> reporter: in far rockaway, new york. single mom, rosa vasquez showed us around her completely renovated home. we met her back in january, when volunteers for habitat for humanity were gutting the place. >> it's overwhelming to know you have your place to go to. and to be able to and home.

it's an undescribable feeling. >> reporter: heavy machines were working on the beach in seaside, new jersey, on the anniversary of the storm that left the roller coaster under water. part of it went up in flames last month and had to be fixed again. 26,000 people are still out of their homes in new jersey. >> reporter: while the scars of sandy remain, neighborhoods are putting the epic storm in their past. one day and one year at a time. >> vinita nair, wjz eyewitness news. >> tonight, coastal towns in new york and new jersey are having candlelight and flashlight vigils to mark the anniversary of the storm. new at 5:00, wjz travels to chrisfield, maryland, to see how the rebuilding effort there is still under way. hard to believe, but october is quickly coming to i close. hard look right now. it's been such a nice end to our month. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist chelsea ingram is live at the mobile weather lab.

it is mostly sunny in central maryland now. pilot of a small plane in oregon is dead, after a plane crashes into the side of a house. police say the single engine aircraft hit a garage and ended up inside the home. the women inside of the home were able to escape without any injuries. there are no passengers on board the plane. the cause of the crash is under investigation. frightening video is recorded in oklahoma by a teenager who caught a hard landing by a small plane, at wiley post airport. this cell phone shows sparks flying as the plane's landing gear collapse for the runway. two people were on board the aircraft. neither suffered any injuries.

two suspects are in custody, charged in the shooting death of a father, who answered a craigslist adfor a mobile home. rachel kim reports, los angeles police believe they committed this crime more than a half dozen times. family p.d. stood by. >> my dad is my best friend. he is everything to me. and nothing is going to bring him back. >> reporter: police knowledge 17-year-old ryan ross and 18- year-old mar quell thomas, both bloods gang members, ambushed the father and son during an attempted robbery on october 19th. that's when the victims responded to a craigslist ad, to buy a cell phone for $300. detectives say when they went to the location, they were approached by suspects, both armed with guns. >> the suspect entered the rear passenger seat and pointed the gun at the 50-year-old.

both suspects demanded property. he exited the car at one point. and the suspect shot at him. >> reporter: investigators were led to the suspects after discovering seven other robberies with similar m.o.s in the baldwin hills area. >> the craigslist ads directed the victims to buy a cell phone, and then the buyers were robbed by the suspects, with similar descriptions, also with hand guns. >> thank you. thank you so much. because like my niece says, now we can't sleep because this person is not going to do more damage to no one. >> 17-year-old ryan roth and 18- year-old mar kel thomas are both charged with murder and attempted murder, two counts each. in florida, a cell phone stops a bullet in his shirt pocket. a robber walked in and shot one round after a failed attempt at

the store safe. police say the clerk's phone actually stopped the bullet. the clerk was taken to the hospital with just minor injuries. a search is under way for that shooting suspect. wow. big numbers on wall street today. >> markets are up and closed to some records. dow was up 111. s&p is up 10. and a new record high. and the nasdaq is up 12. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> stocks rose. and the s&p 500 clocked another record close. new economic reports make it very unlikely, the federal reserve will pull back its sirius program any time soon. the fed is expected to maintain its bond-buying program when a two-day meeting wraps up wednesday. nasdaq indexes stopped updating for about 40 minutes, shortly before noon today.

jennifer lundgren has the story from texas. >> reporter: 36-year-old charles brownlow was accused of a killing spree in texas that left four people fatally shot and one burned to death. >> we are all in a state of shock. >> police say the suspect carried out the rampage at four separate locations, beginning monday afternoon, at this home, where a woman was found shot in the head. a short time later, a fire was spotted at brownlow's house, just a few blocks away. inside, a woman was found burned to death. >> the fire was very clearly an arson. >> reporter: residents of this small town are shaken. >> i don't know what happened. he's a good person. he always came around me. always had a smile on his face. >> reporter: police began searching for brownlow as the rampage continued. before it was over, three more shooting victims would be found. a the this home, a 3-year-old boy was found unharmed in his bed. >> reporter: the suspect was tracked into a wooded area and arrested early this morning. brownlow has a long criminal history.

court records show he has been charged with burglary, unlawful possession of a firearm, and family violence. jennifer lindgren, cbs news. >> police have not discussed a possible motive for the attacks or if they knew the victims. the mother of unarmed trayvon martin who was gunned down in a controversial incident, testifies before a senate hearing in washington, d.c. kai jackson explains why she was called to testify. >> sebrina fulton spoke about the controversial stand your ground. fulton's 17-year-old son, trayvon martin was killed by neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman, two years ago. fulton believes her son would still be alive if not for the stand your ground defense. >> this law does not work. we need to seriously take a look at this law. we need to seriously speak with

the state attorney's office, the police department. more attorneys. we need to do something about this law. when our kids cannot feel safe in their own community. >> in july, george zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter in trayvon martin's death. >> thank you, kai. nearly two dozen states have some form of stand your ground law. outrage continues in one california community, after a teenager is fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy. the teen was carrying a toy rifle that police say looks very real. critics say the deputy acted too swiftly. dan simon has more. >> reporter: outrage in a northern california time. a toy pellet gun, mistakenly identified by a sheriff's deputy for the real thing. the suffer sheriff's deputying firing eight rounds at andy lopez, killing him. >> the report are that he asked the boy to drop the weapon and he didn't drop it.

>> andy was not that type, believe me. andy, if he knew it was a sheriff, if he was asked, andy would have dropped it, you know? i don't believe that at all. >> reporter: friends and neighbors in santa rosa have held rallies, calling the shooting a combination of unnecessary force and racism. some allege the shooter was profiled because he was hispanic, walking through a low- income neighborhood. >> what we want is him to have some consequences, just like we would. you know, we want him to be prosecuted for what he did. he took somebody's life. you know? he was 13 -- he had just turned 13. we want justice for andy. and until we get that, we're not going to stop marching. >> i understand that the community is angry and sad. and this is a horrible tragedy for all involved. >> sheriff told us he wouldn't go into-- couldn't go into details of the case. but eric yo house is a 24- veteran of the force. >> the fact that he's been

employed with the sheriff's department for 24 years suggests you have a lot of confidence in him. >> he's a solid employee. and the fact that he trains new people for us, does show the level of respect for him here. >> the sheriff's department says it has received threats related to the incident. officials say if necessary, extra precautions will be taken to make sure that the deputy is properly protected. anne arundel county police make quick work in arresting a carjacking suspect. police say 33-year-old devin evans of washington, d.c. and a second man, carjacked a victim in front of his home in glen burnie. officers quickly spotted the stolen chevy tahoe and gave pursuit. after crashing, evans was arrested. and inside the vehicle, police found this car bine rifle and other weapons. the trial is under way for a former maryland school for the deaf aide, charged with sexually abusing seven female students. the alleged abuse happened here at the school's columbia campus.

prosecutors say 38-year-old clarence taylor, kissed, hugged, or fondled the girls during their stay at the school from 2008 to 2011. the alleged victims were in fourth through 8th grades. the port of baltimore is touting the excellent grades it received from the coast guard for the changes it made to security. as mike schuh explains, the state has spent millions, upgrading systems. >> reporter: the port of baltimore isn't one area, it's 6. and all 6 need to be secure. access limited to those who need to be there. and denied to those who don't. because... >> they are targets for -- for terrorist activity. >> reporter: the port now has layers of security. three federal agencies. local and state police, as well as private contractors. >> security is complicated. anyone can just float up to your dock. while it's not easy to scramble up to a commercial dock, it's one of the things they have to be prepared for. >> realtime video surveillance, security cameras, new truck gate at our dundalk marine

32 people died when the concordia slammed into a reef, off the tuscan island of gig lio in 2012. passengers are stuck at an airport for almost 12 hours. mary bubala has more on the flying fiasco. >> vic, all passengers on an allegiance flight endured over 11 hours of delays and had to deal with the issues on three separate planes. >> i have been imprisoned by legion airlines by over nine hours. and i am outraged this airline should go out of business immediately. >> reporter: their flight was supposed to leave around 9:30 a.m. but the plane was forced to return, due to mechanical issues. a second plane arrived around 3:30 p.m., but was turned around because it overheated.

so just before 7:00 p.m., a third arrived. but it got stuck on the tarmac for an hour and needed more fuel. just before 9:00 p.m., the flight finally took off, arriving in utah, after 10:00 p.m. that is almost 13 hours after it was scheduled to leave. vic, pretty unbelievable. >> you gotta check that gas gauge, mary, every time. >> every time. >> thank you. >> they gave each an -- a voucher. they said they tried to keep passengers as comfortable as possible. and the father of the defendant took the stand in defense of his son. gary nelson has the story. >> a medical examiner described in clinical detail how a single 9-millimeter slug killed sean taylor are, the nfl and um football star, six years ago, at his palmetto bay home.

eric rivera is the accused trigger man in a botched burglary-turned-murder. using photos and sketches, the m.e. described how the bullet pierced taylor's right thigh ask femmorral artery. he was rushed to shock trauma. his heart still -- >> when he arrived, he had no pulses. >> reporter: as the coroner described the fatal wound, jackie garcia, his sweetheart, and mother of his child, who watched him dying, lowered her head, unable to watch him anymore. taylor, the m.e. said simple -- simply, bled to death. afers a few minutes of blood loss, your brain no longer gets oxygen. and that's when your body starts to shut down. >> reporter: they drove to fort myers, thinking taylor would be at a football game, his house full of cash. among things. taylor, his girlfriend, and their baby were sleeping. cell phone calls that put rivera in the area.

and still quite a bit of sunshine. light east/northeast winds at 7. barometer still rising. 30.33 inches. currently, 54 in oakland. 64 down to the south. very pleas antz, 61 up in elkton. the dew point is back down to 39. so much dryer air came in overnight, with the weak front. gave us a few clouds. 59 by the bay. annapolis, kent island, and rock hall. east/northeast winds. dropped temperature, just a couple of degrees. very unnoticeable, to be honest with you. a few clouds and a lot of nice sunshine this afternoon. now, to the north and west, this is where the cold air is sitting. generally across southern canada. the northern plains, northern rockies, and much of ontario and quebec, into pretty cold air. for the time being, it's going to stay there. ahead of it, some mild air coming in the central plains. 75. 75 in memphis. close to 60 in kansas city. they have shower activity there. eventually, some of the cool air is going to reach us. but not until the latter part

of the weekend. in the meantime, there may be a sprinkle or a shower, add a little precip coming through. this essentially is a warm front going through our region. we'll have clouds at times tomorrow. and maybe a sprinkle or a brief shower in a couple of spots. generally, we'll see more clouds tomorrow. but a little milder air. then we get into warmer air. as the front comes through the area, we'll get into mild air on thursday. probably low 70s. same thing for friday before it begins to cool down. and that's when we expect to see the main area of showers. late, late thursday, after halloween is pretty much done for most of us. and on friday morning. south winds, 5 to 10 knots. bay temp around 59 degrees. so overnight tonight, look for partly cloudy sky to clear skies. down to 43. more clouds tomorrow. and some sun. but scattered sprinkles. maybe a shower in a spot or two. tomorrow's high, close to where we are today. 63. if the sun does come out, it will warm a little more. look like low 60s. that's perfectly normal.
