and a hero behind the wheel. a bus driver talks a woman from jumping off the bridge. >> it was meant to be. i was supposed to be there for her at that moment, and i was. captioning funded by cbs her at that moment, this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, october 31st, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, it took nearly a century, but it's a celebration worth waiting for. the red sox beat the st. louis cardinals in game six to win the world series, and the victory is even sweeter because the team did it at home and just six months after the marathon bombing. of course, no celebration would be complete without some rowdy fans trying to push over cars. at least nine people have been arrested. adriana diaz was on the field just moments after the red sox clinched the title.

>> it hasn't happened at fenway park for 95 years! >> reporter: for the first time in 95 years the boston red sox became the best team in baseball on their own turf. the scruffy red sox defeated the st. louis cadinals 6-1 in game six of the world series. >> i did have tickets for game seven just in case, but, no, i was sure. >> reporter: after two scoreless innings the crowd erupted in the bottom of the third when boston's shane victorino unloaded the bases with a triple off the green monster, pounding his chest in celebration. the last time the red sox won here in fenway park was in 1918 when babe ruth was a red sox pitcher and the green monster was a wooden wall. this victory goes beyond baseball. the red sox have been a driving force behind boston's rise from tragedy after april's marathon bombing. bombing survivors have been

nation's midsection. a massive storm system stretches from texas to the great lakes. heavy rains could cause flash flooding from louisiana all the way to oklahoma. damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes and torrential rainfall all expects to hammer the ohio and mississippi valleys. and heavy rain flooded roads in parts of texas on wednesday. a flash flood watch is in effect for today in the eastern part of the state and evacuations have already been ordered near austin, texas. well, republicans could not wait to pounce on health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius yesterday. she faced a house committee and defended the problem-plagued healthcare.gov website for a grueling 3 1/2 hours. she said the system is getting better, but the gop wasn't buying it. susan mcginnis is in washington with the latest. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. it was a 3 1/2-hour spectacle with several references to "the

wizard of oz" with kathleen sebelius being from kansas. so many wanted to get their questions in that they each got two minutes each in a rapidfire fashion in order to get all the questions out. meanwhile throughout kathleen sebelius's testimony, the healthcare.gov website was down. kathleen sebelius is promising to fix the government's troubled health care website. >> let me say directly to the americans you deserve better. i apologize. >> one month after the launch americans still can't navigate healthcare.gov. >> it's been down during the whole time you i've been testifying. >> during the hearing, michigan's representative mike rogers questioned sebelius about the website. a medicare official wrote from a security perspective, the aspects of the system that were not tested due to the ongoing development exposed a level of uncertainty that can be deemed as a high risk. >> they believe that was, in their words, an acceptable risk, which means you put millions of americans' personal financial

information at risk to hackers. >> republicans also complained insurance companies are canceling the policies of millions because the plans don't meet the standards of the affordable care act. president obama addressed that in his speech in boston. >> if the insurers decided to downgrade or cannes cancel the plans, under the law they have to replace it with affordable coverage. >> now, secretary sebelius said she did not know contractors wanted a delay in that october 1st launch, but earlier here on capitol hill, contractors testified that they informed cms, the so-called quarterback of the website that is under the department of health and human services, that the website was not ready. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington.

thank you, susan. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, extending the stimulus and big profits for facebook. wendy gillette is in the new york stock exchange. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the fed acknowledged they will buy $85 billion a month in bonds to keep interest rates low and encourage borrowing and spending. some experts expect they'll slow the program by early next year. wall street reacted negatively to the fed's conclusion that they still need help. the dow tumbled nearly 62 points while the nasdaq shed almost 22. after the closing bell facebook revealed its third quarter revenue grew by 60%. the social networking company earned $425 million compared to its $59 million loss for the same period in 2012. its stocked soared in after-hours trading. asian stocks dipped after disappointing corporate earnings. tokyo's nikkei lost more than 1%. hong kong's hang seng slid half a percent. social security benefit checks won't be going up much next year.

as prices for consumer products remain relatively steady. the cost-of-living adjustment will be 1.5% next year or about $19 a month for the average retiree or disabled worker. republican senator lindsey graham is threatening to block obama's pick for the fed after last year's terrorist conflict in benghazi. he said he'll hold up the nomination of janet yellen to force the government to talk with survivors. they say it could put their safety and criminal investigations at risk. >> and pretty soon you'll have to be just as old to buy a cigarette as you do to buy a beer in new york city. the city council voted last night to raise the age to buy tobacco including e-cigarettes to 21. new jersey and hawaii are considering a similar bill.

a bicyclist has quite a story to tell. cell phone video captured a massive tree narrowly missing him as he rode through amsterdam on monday. galeforce winds uprooted the tree sending it plummeting to the ground. fortunately the bicyclist was able to veer out of the way in the nick of time. well, more backlash on the nsa. the agency is accused of spying on everything from the vatican to google.

it denies doing anything wrong, but as vinita nair tells us, u.s. allies aren't so sure. >> reporter: when roman catholic cardinals were gathering to select a new pope in march, an italian magazine suggested that the nsa had a pipeline into the vatican. the magazine panorama says the nsa recorded phone calls and could have eavesdropped on cardinals who voted for pope francis. they tried to clear the air with this statement. the national security agency does not target the vatican. assertions that it has are not true. also wednesday the united nations says it received similar asurnss that its communications networks are not and will not be monitored by american intelligence, but it was not clear whether they were monitored in the past, but it's not just international bodies and city-states that are targets. the "washington post" reported the nsa broke into communication links connecting google and yahoo! world offices. the story was based on documents obtained from nsa leaker, edward snowden. the nsa denied the tactic saying

it gets data from such companies only through court orders. of course, all this comes after german chancellor angela merkel learned the u.s. had been monitoring her cell phone for years. now france and spain want to know if their calls were tapped too. vinita nair, cbs news, new york. passengers on a delta flight have finally reached their destination this morning after an unscheduled stop at a very remote airport. they took off from tokyo yesterday morning bound for san francisco. an engine warning message led the crew to divert the plane to cold bay, alaska, in the aleutian islands. it's a barren town with about 160 people. the 167 passengers and 11 crew took off again ten hours later in a replacement plane. and i wonder if there were enough bathrooms. that's what you think when you're a lady. are there enough bathrooms. straight ahead, concussion concerns. a new study raising questions about brain injuries in young athletes. this is the "cbs morning news."

one of the findings, that helmets may not do enough to prevent brain injuries. teresa garcia has more. >> reporter: 15-year-old trey fearn struggled for months after playing baseball and football. >> i'd get headaches and get nauseous. i'd try to focus and couldn't do it. >> reporter: a new report from the institute of medicine says there's a lot we don't know about the impact concussions have on children. the group is recommending a national system to better track the problem. >> the result of reporting concussions, because you can't see a concussion, people hide their symptoms because they don't want to let their teammates or parents or coaches down. sometimes it's because athletes don't actually recognize their symptoms as a concussion. >> reporter: football, ice hockey, lacrosse, wrestling, and soccer are rated among the highest rate of concussions in boys. for girls it's soccer, lacrosse, and basketball. >> the panel finds little

distraught woman. george richert of our affiliate wivb reports. >> reporter: in the three years that darnell barton has been driving a metrobus, he's met all kinds of people, but one young lady he came upon on friday afternoon he will never forget. the on-bus surveillance shows a lady standing on a narrow ridge outsi outside the railing over the expressway. >> this shows the lady standing on a narrow bridge. >> ma'am, are you okay? >> it didn't seem real because of what was going around. pedestrians are going by. she was distraught. she was distant, disconnected. i grabbed her arm and said do you want to come on this side of the guardrail and that was actually the first time she actually spoke to me. she said yes. >> reporter: darnell does believe it was fate.

>> it was meant to be. i was supposed to be there for her at that moment, and i was. i wanted to convey that. whatever it was, we're going to help you through whatever it is and it's not as serious as jumping onto the 198. >> reporter: darnell thinks most of his co-workers would have done the same. they call him big country, a big man with a big heart, and after he did what he did, the passengers gave him a round of applause. >> i felt like i did what i was supposed to do at the time. you know. i'm a football guy, so, you know, when you sit on the bench and the coach calls your number, you've got to go in there and make a play and do what the play calls for, and thing that's what i did. >> that was wivb's george richert reporting. two other good samaritans later stopped to help, a corrections officer and a crisis counselor until police arrived.
