from ptsd and that likely played a role in what happened here early this morning. at this hour, investigators are still on scene. >> bullet holes now riddle several units at the coral gardens condominiums, a scary reminder of the hours-long standoff between melbourne police and a heavy armed suspect identified as michael thomas taylor. this is what it sounded like earlier this morning as taylor and officers exchanged rounds and rounds of gunfire. that prompted police to evacuate neighbors like this man to a nearby bowling alley. >> she was very worried. just the ricochet of bullets. our apartments are on either side of you. exchanged rate of gunfire, you have to always worry about that. >> i was able to go over there and i can tell you this was a very intense situation for our officers and the residents of this complex. >> melbourne police say the

wednesday night after what they're calling a domestic disturbance. for nearly 12 hours, authorities negotiated with taylor, a veteran, but they couldn't get him to come out. die. sometimes. >> that is, until george taylor, a veterans victim advocate who knows the suspect stepped in. >> from one combat veteran to another combat veteran. there's a rapport there. i knew if i had the opportunity or prayed if i had the opportunity we would resolve it peacefully. >> inside the complex this afternoon we briefly spoke with a woman who said she was taylor's wife. she told us her husband just needs help. >> now despite the several rounds of gunfire, luckily no one was hurt in this situation. taylor had a slight injury on his hand. nothing severe. he's in the process of being booked into the brevard county jail.

facing attempted murder charges. >> justin warmoth reporting live tonight. thank you. >> breaking news from wall street. 2016 is not making it easy for our 401(k)'s. >> the stock market opened again with a triple-digit decline and from that point on, it never recuperated. here's a look at the numbers right now at closing. the dow is down 392 points, the nasdaq down 146 and the s&p 500 down 47 and some change. it is a real bad day for a lot of investors. they were spooked by the turmoil in china. trading on the chinese stock market had to be halted after numbers took a big tumble. financial analysts say do not panic, though. if you're a long-term investor, the best strategy is to stick to your game plan. >> weather-wise, the sun is starting to shine after a misty morning. let's take a live look at downtown orlando. chief meteorologist tom sorrells is pinpointing what's in store

>> heartbreak now for a volusia county community. they are dealing with the loss of this 16-year-old girl. she died on a school soccer field during a game. news 6 reporter loren korn joins us at taylor middle school -- high school, i should say, in pierson where students held a memorial for the girl. >> the principal told me today that some of the students wanted to remember their fellow classmate and friend who suddenly collapsed here at this died. >> students at taylor middle high school released white balloons today, remembering their classmate, the 16-year-old girl who collapsed during a soccer game and later died. >> an emergency at taylor middle high school. we need an ambulance. a girl passed out. >> it happened wednesday night. she raised her hand to get out of the game, sat on the bench and used her inhaler and suddenly collapsed. >> is she conscious yet?

for hours today as they investigated a call about a grenade. deputies say a man told them he was in the area picking up boxes when he saw the grenade which deputies determined was old and not capable of exploding. the scene is now clear. no word yet on where that grenade came from. >> all right. so we have to look on the bright side when it comes to last >> yeah. since no one won last night's drawing worth around $500 million, the next jackpot that will win will be worth a game on. heights. saturday's powerball drawing will be the biggest in u.s. history. it could be all yours for the price of a $2 ticket. keep this mind, the chance of winning wednesday's drawing was 1 in 293 million. slimmer. still it's fun to think of all the good things you could do with that jackpot. >> i'm going to pay off my new

there's cooler stuff to talk about, starting with drones this year. this one you definitely do not want to crash. the chinese firm e-hang shows off its prototype of a drone that can carry people inside. it can take one person to a pre-programmed destination. engineers say once the destination is entered the passenger only has to push buttons to take off and land. it also claims it can reach heights of 11,000 feet, speeds of 62 miles per hour. the battery, it runs on will last up to 23 minutes. you could go about a block and a half. >> we won't be seeing that drone in the skies anytime soon. it has not received f.a.a. approval yet. >> but one gadget could be roaming your home soon. this is chip the robotic dog that does just about everything a normal one does without the clean-up, though. you don't have to follow this thing around with a bag. you can pre-order chip the robot dog.

it costs almost as much as a real dog. >> that's a lot cheaper. >> that's true, especially if you count vet appointments. >> and how about a hoverboard and half segue? it may be here with the newest creation. you cannot only ride the robot, but it can serve as an alarm for your house and you can give it some arms like this guy. >> i love my arms. awesome. >> i think that was just there. >> the segue robot recognizes voice commands and has an internet-connected camera that helps it to follow you around. kind of creepy. if you want your own personal segue robot, you have to wait until when they announce it will go into commercial production. my favorite use, though, when you carry the groceries. >> that's what kids are for.

we zoomed to a high of 73 in orlando, 74 in sanford and 74 in cocoa beach. in central florida tonight, things are looking pretty good. it is 72 degrees right now in the city beautiful. 73 in melbourne and in leesburg, we're still at 70. last night at this time we were holding -- i tried to remember back, i think it was 58 or 60 by this time of the day yesterday in leesburg. right now, 70 in the villages. 66 in ocala. in gainesville tonight, we're at 63 degrees. 72 in cocoa beach and 73 in melbourne. wind speeds tonight a 17-mile-an-hour wind, beach side, new smyrna beach, only a 3-mile-an-hour wind in the villages. it really does depend on where you are. here's the big low causing us all the rain and heartache yesterday. tonight it's moved its way to the open waters of the atlantic. now it looks well-defined. the hurricane center actually issued a special update on it. it's not tropical or subtropical, just a big low out there swirling around. no chance of it developing through the weekend but it's putting out wind speeds of 60

it's a tough, tough little system. back to the west on the visible satellite comes our next storm moving in from the gulf of mexico. it's going to be a big rainmaker for us, starting as early as tonight, maybe tomorrow as well. here's the modeling. by 5:00 tomorrow morning, meteorologist troy bridges will be here. the rain is marching on in. by 11:00 tomorrow, there she blows. and here's the scattered showers across the area through the afternoon tomorrow and then on saturday, no rain early. i believe we're going to be okay for the crime line chili cook-off. late in the day on saturday, more scattered showers begin to show up. it's kind of a wet and woolly saturday afternoon with all kinds of wind howling around, too. 57 the overnight low tonight in ocala and the overnight low in orlando is 59 with more clouds and more showers. here's your friday. >> first thing tomorrow morning, 63 degrees at 8 a.m. by noon, 70. the daytime high tomorrow moving up to about 79 degrees before all is said and done. again, sanford harley-davidson

smartphone and your tablet. take us with you. >> the osborn family spectacle of dancing lights has finally come to an end. disney extended the attraction to last night. the seasonal attraction has been a staple at disney's hollywood studios for the last 20 years. the final day was supposed to be sunday. but disney extended it to wednesday night. in september they said they were discontinuing the lights to make way for "star wars" and toy story attractions. ginger finally got a chance to see them at hollywood studios last night. >> i thought the crowds would be gone because it was extended. >> really? >> i had no idea. my favorite part is when they choreographed the lights and everything. >> yeah, it's awesome. i love where you are. look at that selfie. >> i know it. it's a horrible selfie. the lights are so high, you can basically see my crazy eyes. it was a lot of fun. people were dancing in the streets shoulder to shoulder when the music would play.

a big low pressure off the east coast is exiting. what happened is the backside here threw a band of rain right in. scattered showers coming in. it looks like a sea breeze. you bet it does. all this is working this way. as this big low cranks and checks out and moves to the east, it means an end to the rain. well for now. take a look at what's going on the next 24 hours. big changes are coming. not so much tonight. 71 degrees at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 69, 68, about 7:00 tonight. beyond that all the big changes occur. all the mess that i showed you in the gulf is going to come in here. i'll talk about the weekend in minutes. >> thank you, tom. this is a live look for you outside on i-4 west of john young parkway. you can see things are getting pretty congested. cars heading away from you are going westbound. traffic is stop and go out there. expect your ride to take a little bit extra time this afternoon. the eastbound lanes are up to

than the westbound lanes. checking out your drive times for you right now. >> we now know when the man at the center of a police shooting in orlando will go to trial. the shooting killed an innocent woman at a downtown club. news 6 reporter mark lehman tells us what's next for the man who police say is responsible. >> the pretrial conference was held in the judge's chambers at the orange county courthouse. attendance. jail. we learned when a jury may hear his case. >> previously set for this week, the trial for cody roach is now he's charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of a 22-year-old woman, despite never firing a bullet. police say roach got in a fight with officers after being thrown out of the vixen nightclub. the officer then opened fire, nine times.

according to police. >> roach was struck seven times. one of the bullets went through the bar door, killing the woman. the officer has been cleared of her death because prosecutors say roach is ultimately responsible. he could face life in prison if a jury agrees. >> attorneys on both sides now have the next 2 and a half months to prepare for the trial, set to begin at the end of march. they're next due back in court for a pretrial hearing on march 17th. >> potential upgrades coming to parking meters in brevard county. news 6 has learned cocoa beach is considering changing its coin-operated machines to ones that you can pay with credit cards or by your phone. we're told it would cost a little more than $350,000 to install the meters. the city is set to vote on the upgrades during tonight's meeting at 7:00. >> i wish there was a system where you could do both. not everyone has a credit card or a smartphone. >> the smartphone things really work. i use it all the time. it's a park mobile app. if you're out to dinner and

can add time. >> which is great. >> that i always -- >> you have to run out to do it. >> it's stressful to try to dig for coins and run out and feed the meter. it's a lot to deal with. >> new at 4:30, a potential setback for ucf and its vision to bring this huge campus to downtown orlando. matt austin joins us with the new timeline. >> ladies, they're not going back to the drawing board, but ucf says it needs more time and what appears to be more money before presenting a downtown governors. now they say it'll happen in the near future but not in this month. after all, this is a big project. we're talking $60 million to develop the campus in the heart of downtown orlando. it's gaining some support. earlier this week, cfe federal donated $1.5 million. orlando magic pledged the same. now the school needs to find more donors, especially if it still wants to open in the fall of 2018. that is the plan. we'll keep you posted on how all this plays out. still a lot of pieces have to come together.

>> no kidding. >> closing in. >> thank you, matt. an osceola county substitute teacher accused of having sex with a student is out of jail on bond. st. cloud police say sarah moore had sex with the under-aged victim several times, including at her home, which she shares with her husband and kids. moore was most recently a substitute teacher at st. cloud middle school. she was fired after her arrest. moore is charged with 10 counts of sexual battery. >> the first-ever jetblue flight to daytona beach from j.f.k. airport in new york arrived earlier today. the airline just launched daily non-stop service between the two cities. the flight was supposed to get here at 11:55 in the morning but landed 20 minutes early. a jetblue official we spoke with who went to embry-riddle, told us why they chose daytona beach as the newest destination. >> we saw the level of enthusiasm that we don't see in a lot of communities. that helped us to make a decision that helped to take

new market. >> for now jetblue will have one flight a day but it could increase if the trips are popular. they could also add flights to other cities like boston. >> we're working to get results for neighbors who are dealing with some trash troubles. >> news 6 told you yesterday orange county's new automated collection system was causing some issues. >> amanda castro wanted to follow up today to see if the problems were fixed. >> a little different here today. the trash in these containers is gone. about four days after it was scheduled to be picked up. orange county saying it's working hard to make sure all the trash is gone by the end of the week. >> our trash was picked up today. >> rachael howell is glad to see this big green container is no longer in front of her home filled with trash. it was supposed to be picked up on monday. >> it's nice to look down the street and only see one can for the recycling, which is i'm not sure when that will be picked up. it was a big relief. >> just yesterday we were at this neighborhood.

their garbage sitting by their driveway for days. orange county telling news 6 there have been delays in pickup because of the new automated collection system. some people are not following the new procedures, including put all the trash in the containers and leaving enough space between the bins. >> i would say 90% of the people got picked up on time on the right day and are moving forward and 10% didn't. >> jim becker says it's still a lot. since monday, the county has received about 25,000 calls. he says crews are working quickly and on saturday, usually their day off, to pick up all the trash. >> we expect that everyone will be picked up no later than saturday. >> the county is urging you to be patient as the kinks of the new system are worked out. >> we understand they're doing the best that they can and, you know, just getting an answer and having some type of pickup is exactly what we were looking for. >> in orange county, amanda castro, news 6. >> if you want to get under people's skin, don't pick up their trash. >> that's a tough one. >> especially after the holidays.
