[real-time closed captioning provided by u.s. captioning company.] >> a weather alert now at 4:00, as temperatures start to plummet again tonight. thank you for joining us. i'm lisa bell. >> i'm julie broughton. ginger is off today. we have team coverage on the next phase of the violent weather following the severe storms that pummeled the state this weekend. >> we'll check in live with meteorologist candace campos in a moment as she travels throughout central florida to pinpoint how you can prepare. but first, chief meteorologist tom sorrells is pinpointing how low it's going to get overnight tonight. what can we expect? >> it's going to be a chilly drop tonight and chilly start

it's going to be colder as the week wears on. take a look over my shoulder for how we're doing in overnight lows. they're going way down in the 30's. not a bunch to track on radar. what a difference the day has made. see the cold front that bothered us so much pushed all the way down to the south and took away the cloud cover. all we're left with is the colder, invading air. that's evidence of cold air running over warm water which flat out tells the entire story just about. the temperature reading right now is 67 in gainesville and 61 in ocala and 59 from the villages to leesburg to 60 right now at o.i.a., which is not bad considering where we go from here. we dive pretty quickly to a reading of 54 degrees by 7:00 and into the 40's as we go into the night. here are the overnight lows i'm looking for tonight. we're going 33 in ocala and 34 in the villages and 38 in sanford and 40 should do it for the overnight low tonight in orlando.

>> developing right now, human remains found in a lake county backyard. this afternoon, investigators are trying to determine if it's a man who's been missing more than a month. deputies say they responded last night for a well-being check. they arrived at the home on pennsylvania street in the lake county town of paisley. they say no one was home and this morning they made a grim discovery. news 6 reporter eric sandoval was the first reporter on the scene today and the first to talk with investigators. you found out the homeowner has actually been reported missing for several weeks now. >> yeah, you're right. i've been talking with neighbors and deputies today and they tell me that dennis jones has been missing more than a month and that is why one of the neighbors around here called deputies last night. you can see behind me there's a lake county sheriff's deputy stationed right outside of jones' house. they want to make sure nobody removes anything, especially scene. >> lake county sheriffs investigators say they made the discovery this morning. >> human remains have been found.

just as the remains were found, buried in the backyard of a home jones. detectives tell us they responded to jones' house last night on pennsylvania street in the small town of paisley. they wanted to check on him after neighbors noticed they had not seen him. door last night. so they brought in a cadaver dog and they found a grave in the backyard. >> this is a suspicious death investigation and that's what detectives are working right now. >> neighbors say they haven't seen jones in a month. some even longer. >> they found human remains in his backyard. >> i didn't know nothing about it until i saw all this. >> so what if the remains are that of this missing homeowner? who would have put him there? we asked the lake county sheriff's investigators. >> they have information they're working on. i'm not at liberty to release those details at this point but they're working on it and hopefully we'll have a clear

>> now, we found out some of that other information and that other information has to do with jones' truck, which was actually found about two blocks down the street here in someone's yard. we spoke to that neighbor whose yard it was found in. see what he has to say coming up in the story we're putting together right now for 5:00. for now, we're live in the small town of paisley in lake county. eric sandoval, news 6. >> thank you. also developing tonight, a mission worker from central florida was killed in africa. >> the missionary from marion county was killed in a recent attack, thought to be led by al-qaida. he moved to the area to work in an orphanage. he was waiting to pick up a group of volunteers in a cafe just before the attack. reports that the al-qaida-led militants raided a luxury hotel across the street, shooting some and taking others in a siege that lasted hours, leaving 28 people dead, including mike. his wife posted on facebook,

complete hiss mystery to me." >> hundreds of people gathered in orlando today to honor a local man who also made civil rights history. the 23rd annual arthur pappy kennedy was honored today. he was the first elected african-american city council member in 1973 and re-elected by an overwhelming majority in 1976. many call him a living example of the change martin luther king, jr. hoped to see. >> what he was in public is the way he was in private. to me, that's a lesson that you really can't teach by words or by lessons. you have to live that. >> kennedy helped the local ncaa branch, meals on wheels and several parent teacher associations. organizers say they hope kicking

>> i was watching and you were doing a good job. >> thank you. did you sleep right through it? >> no, i didn't. >> there we go. >> it was loud. >> you'll sleep through it. but, no, it was loud enough for all of us. the storms are long gone tonight so we're turning our attention to the cold. this morning we jumped to 43 in orlando. we jumped to an overnight low of 34 in gainesville. in ocala, you woke up to 36. these temperatures are a step ahead of where we're going tonight. we dropped to 39 this morning in palm coast and 44 did it in sanford. now we've rebounded to 60 right now in sanford. the same in orlando. look at ocala and the villages, both at 61. it's actually warmer in marion county than it is in orange county or seminole for that matter. 57 from gainesville to palm coast and 59 right now in melbourne. the last 24 hours, we've only dropped about 2 degrees and our temperature, 2 degrees colder than we were 24 hours ago.

palm coast, 2 degrees cooler. beach. melbourne is 3 degrees cooler yesterday. the cold air continues to funnel northwest. in leesburg, winds from the northwest at 3. sanford from the northwest at 7. beach side, the wind is still a little stiffer there than it is across the interior. you've got a 13 to 14-mile-an-hour wind across brevard county and a 3-mile-an-hour wind in flagler. clouds and rain forecast, well, okay, i think you know where i'm going with this. we don't have a lot of cloud cover. without the clouds to help us maintain what little heat we gather during the day today, we're going to really crash the temperature during the overnight tonight. through the day tomorrow, we don't cloud up anymore either and the northerly flow keeps trucking. wednesday morning, it will be a couple of degrees colder. we'll talk more about that as time wears on. overnight low tonight in ocala, one more step down from this morning. we're going 33.

tomorrow morning when you wake up, 40. 38 in sanford and 35 in palm coast and 36 will do it for the overnight low tonight in daytona beach, 44 in cocoa beach. official forecast for orlando, i'm going to call it clear and cool with winds still funneling in here from the northwest 5 to 10 miles per hour. here's tomorrow. first thing in the morning, we're going to be clear. it's going to be on the cold side. 8 a.m. will bring us to 41 degrees. by noon tomorrow, sunny. a sparkling, crisp, exhilarating kind of day with a daytime read of 52. tomorrow night at 6 p.m., we're crashing to about 50. high tomorrow, 58. overnight low tomorrow in orlando, into the 30's. 38 in orlando which means those of you in marion, flagler and sumpter counties will have a freeze warning for tuesday night into wednesday. tonight you don't freeze. tonight is kind of a test run. you're going to get into the low 30's.

>> developing now, a mom opens her door thinking neighbors were outside but criminals were outside. we'll tell you what's going on. >> and candace campos is taking us down to street level to show us how the plummeting temperatures will affect your family. but first, we're starting off our coverage with chief meteorologist tom sorrells with your pinpoint accurate weather center forecast. >> those have moved on on the radar, it's as clear as we've seen in the last four to five days. tonight we're watching the cold air come marching in, evidence on the satellite imagery by the fact that the cold front is down south and the cold air is pushing over the water. not a lot of cloud cover is left for us, nothing is to protect us. right now, in daytona beach, we've dropped off the daytime high to about 59 degrees. humidity is low, low, low, at 36%. the wind is from the west at 9 miles per hour. other temperatures, still 61 in ocala. 59 from the villages to leesburg. and in sanford, 60.

were opened in an area by plantation reserve estates, north of old dixie highway west of i-95. flagler county deputies have taken over the case. they tell news 6 they'll let us know as soon as they have more information about a suspect or how this could have happened. >> a crime alert now as detectives investigate a violent home invasion in orlando. we're told two armed men broke into a home and threatened a mom and her two children inside. this happened just after midnight on harwood street. that's off john young parkway, not far from colonial drive. news 6 reporter johnny fernandez spoke with the mom who said she begged them to spare her life. >> the victim says that the only reason she opened up the door is neighbor. when the two suspects barged into this us house right here, they threatened everyone inside the house, including an 11-year-old. >> friends and family came to visit the family who lives here on harwood street after a horrific night. >> they terrorized us. i said, please, don't kill me.

i'm a mother. please don't kill me. >> the victim, who wanted to remain anonymous, said when she heard the midnight knock she thought she heard her neighbor's voice. when she opened the door, that's when the two armed suspects barged in, forcing her to wake up her family, bring them to the kitchen and demanding money. >> they said you know what i'm talking about. that's when he had his gun to my baby. he said i'm going to kill him. the guy in the kitchen. kill the baby, kill the baby. i hovered down over my baby and said, please, no, no. >> moments later the victim said the suspects realized something wasn't right. >> i heard the one in the kitchen and they started backing out with the gun saying don't look at me, don't look at me and i'm like, i'm not, i'm not. >> the suspects took off in a gray impala, and with the guys still on the loose, the victim and her family say they want justice. >> i pray to god they pick you guys up and lock you up. you live by the gun and you die

>> and police are not giving much information about the two suspects. the only thing the victim told police is they were wearing dark clothes and had their faces covered. police are asking for your help right now. if you have any information about what happened here, you're urged to contact orlando police. in orlando, johnny fernandez, news 6. >> right now, authorities are searching for a dozen marines missing since two helicopters crashed off hawaii have just discovered life rafts that were on board the aircraft. coast guard officials say three life rafts have been recovered so far. they say some were inflated but it was unclear how they got that way. the crash happened last week when two marine helicopters collided. the day for waiting for answers is excruciating for the families of the marines. >> after the marines came to the door, i know you see it in movies and it's like, god, that's horrible, but when it

happens, there's no -- you know, you don't have -- even if you thought in your mind that you had a plan for that, there's no plan. >> the cause of the crash is still unclear. the helicopters were carrying black boxes, but they still have not been found. >> also developing, this time overseas, three of the four american prisoners being held in iran have been exchanged for pardons and dropped charges against seven iranians. the three americans arrived in germany late yesterday and switzerland. the fourth american stayed in iran. they were released within 24 hours after their capture last week. secretary of state john kerry says seeing video of all 10 u.s. sailors being taken captive by iran infuriated him. >> i was very angry. i was very frustrated and angry that that was released.

what he said to secure the release of the sailors, but he says he made it crystal clear it had to get resolved. >> tonight we're seeing for the first time spacex's latest landing attempt that ended with a huge explosion. news 6 space expert erik von ancken is here with more on really this incredible video. >> spacex c.e.o. elon musk put this video out on instagram. it really was close. the falcon9 rocket touches down, sits upright for a second and then slowly starts to topple and, bam, a big explosion after that. they had this, if only that strut had not failed. musk says the problem is a landing strut that collapsed. otherwise they might have pulled this off. the landing attempt was on a floating barge off the coast of california after satellite launched from vandenberg air force base. spacex has tried this a few times before off our coast but the rocket came down too hard and it blew up right away.

also a rough landing but it seems the strut is what did them in. >> it looks like we came in on target as we planned, as we touched down. it was a slightly harder landing than we expected and it looked like one of the landing legs may have broken as we touched down on the drone ship. >> now, maybe you're asking if spacex has successfully landed a rocket last month. you probably remember this one, right, at cape canaveral on land. why try again at sea? a few reasons. it's good practice. landing the rocket at sea is the only option because the rocket may not have enough fuel to make it back to land. and the biggest reason this time around, spacex did not get the environmental approval to land back at vandenberg like they did at cape canaveral last month. landing on the water is very tricky because you have the waves to account for. yesterday, the waves were 10

can you imagine the barge going up and down and trying to put that landing down. >> there was a strut inside the falcon9 rocket that broke causing the tanks to bang last year. >> very incredible video, though, yeah. >> it's amazing. >> sure. >> new at 4:30, the publisher about a controversial george washington book about his slaves is pulling the book from distribution. they'll no longer distribute the book. it's called "a birthday cake for george washington." it features a slave called hercules smiling as he bakes a birthday cake. critics say the book sugar coats slavery. scholastic says the picture book does not include enough historical context and could give a false impression about slavery. it will accept all returns on the book.

>> there's a big cool-down in central florida. temperatures begin tumbling into the 30's this morning and it's expected to be even chillier overnight tonight. all this comes after this weekend's storms brought tornadoes to parts of the state, even in brevard county. the wind gusts were so strong in places like cocoa beach. look at this. they ripped apart a familiar sign at a1a and state road 520. this is the beach wave store. you can see the iconic shark was knocked right off the top of that post. farther north in naples, judge jude's private plane was among several damaged by high winds saturday night. 80-mile-an-hour wind gusts moved through the airport.

nail polishes have tphp which is also known for flame retardants on furniture like couches >> animal studies indicate it's linked to reproductive and developmental issues. that's surprising news to jenna, who lets her kids play with nail polish. >> i was shocked. i'm pretty cautious about what i expose my kids to and nail polish is definitely not one of the things i ever worried about. >> a group called the research speculative and misleading. it points out tphp has been widely and safely used across many industries, including to prevent electrical, automobile and furniture fires. >> i think i will continue to let my kids use nail polish every once in a while. it's a fun thing they obviously enjoy doing but i'll be more cautious about doing so. >> and you were saying there are

>> my daughter, you know her, she's very girly, likes nail salons and all that, but there are some non-toxic nail polishes mainly marketed for girls. they don't stay on very long but when you look at the ingredients, some of those things we're talking about are lacking. >> you wouldn't think it would get inside your body. interesting research. here's a live look right now from the blue springs state park manatee cam. you can see the sea cows are moving into the springs since it is warmer than the river right now. the springs are at a constant 72 degrees year-round. when the temperatures dip, the manatees seek the blue springs state park. at last count, there was more than 300 manatees at blue springs state park. it's a great time to head out there because you'll get a show there with all the manatees. >> i saw a lot of people out there checking out the manatees today.

and 61 from ocala to the villages. the same in melbourne. 52 did it in new smyrna beach with a daytime high today. how can that be when we're at 57 right now. we have to fix that graphic quickly. here are the current temperatures. wind speed, we talked about this earlier. all the winds are still funneling in from the north or northwest and to the west a while and back to the northwest, ushering in the colder air that's going to take over. this is what we call the water vapor loop. when you see this, you see the bright areas and it has a lot of moisture and a bunch of rain, all going down to the south in the last 24 hours, peeling away from central florida. we're left here with the dry air. there's a band of cloud cover, but for the most part, you see how gray it is from here to dark and even streaks of orange in there. the orange colors are the really, really dry spots. that means we're not going to have a whole lot of cloud cover for you. maybe a little bit of upper level, very thin clouds moving

the surface. we're as dry as we can be. we don't have a lot of humidity in the air right now. there's nothing to fire up and no moisture to come flowing back into central florida. tuesday night into wednesday morning, that's when we hit our coldest point of the week. it should be the coldest air we've had so far this season. there will be a freeze watch in effect tomorrow night for marion county, sumpter county, and alachua county, all the way around to flagler county as well. not tonight. but tomorrow night. it's going to be the cooler night of the two. as we roll our way through wednesday into thursday, we'll gray up a little bit. maybe by friday, rain chances will be back. lows tonight, 38 in daytona beach. 40 in oviedo and 33 does it for the overnight low in ocala. you'll go below freezing tomorrow night but tonight you'll stop at 33. the villages, you'll stop at 34. and 44 does it for you in cocoa. clear and cool in orlando with
