breaking right now, an apartment complex surrounded after police shoot a man with a gun. good evening to you, i'm herb herb. >> and i'm lisa bell. this is all happening at the courtney landing condos. just north of lee vista boulevard. news 6 reporter is there live. what have you learned tonight? >> reporter: yeah, we're learning that police were confronted by not one man, but two men with guns. we were told that they were called about a suspicious situation. police not revealing what that situation was. however, when they arrived on scene, they spotted the first man with a gun. they ordered him to drop it.

the officer started shooting, hitting the man. in a condo near by, a woman's husband could hear running upstairs and then the shots he called his wife petrified. >> you can tell he was just out of breath and like whispering. just because you could hear literally everything from upstairs to downstairs. you could kind of hear what's going on. and so we were trying to be quiet and not be caught in the middle of everything. >> these things happen in a blink of an eye. and unfortunately, our officers are not hurt. they're shaken up. but they'll go home to their families tonight. >> reporter: now that was just the first man that confronted officers. moments later, a second guy, a veteran trying to protect his home came out pointing his gun at police. when he realized what happened, he dropped his gun and is okay. the first man was taken to a hospital. we don't know the name of that

>> what happened beyond the yellow tape at this home has a small town of paysly talking. and most everyone knew or knew of the man that lived here. 61-year-old dennis jones. >> we weren't that tight. i mean, i don't hang around a bunch of alcoholics. >> reporter: we were here a few years ago when deputies gave joans a dui in his own yard. it's no secret he drank and had girlfriends. including this man's wife. >> he did [bleep] quite a few people out here. >> reporter: so it's no surprise when deputies said they found him missing over months and found remains buried out back. neighbors saw him at his home along with her kids. but no signs of jones for a few weeks. neighbors say the girlfriend had also been driving jones's truck that wound up abandoned in the middle of the road the night before all this. >> apparently he gives the truck

twisting a lid off a water bottle. >> they certainly knew good and well they were doing damage, or costing someone money. >> reporter: they say the vandal twisted the valves and left the water running for hours. >> a one inch diameter hose is going to provide a pretty good display of water coming out of it. and depending the amount of water pressure there. so someone had a great time. >> reporter: 1700 residents are under a boil water notice while crews work to fix this. >> you look at $2,500, we believe to be the cost of the loss. $2,200 for the water. and approximately $300 for the treatment of the water. >> it's not like there's contamination in the water, it's just the potential is there. so we want everybody to be safe and careful. >> reporter: authorities tell us this sort of vandalism is a felony. the person responsible could face serious jail time. >> again, depending on their criminal history, they could be looking up to five years in prison as a result of the penalty associated with a felony
