but first, chief meteorologist tom sorrells is busy today. he is pinpointing what is expected to be the coldest night of the season so far. hi, tom. >> good afternoon. let's come out of the box with the freeze warning in a large part of the viewing area. flagler county, interior volusia, lake county and sumpter county, half of the viewing area right now under a hard freeze warning going on, especially north in alachua county. from flagler, interior volusia, lake, sumter and marion counties, you're under a freeze warning until 8:00 tomorrow morning. the cold air is pouring into the heart of central florida as the cloud cover checks out. we held on just that much of cloud cover last night, which made a little bit of a difference for us. right now, we're holding at 53

sanford. it feels like in the 50's and an overnight low tonight that's really going to do it to you in ocala. down to 29 for a couple of hours in ocala. 32 in the villages and 35 in leesburg. the overnight low in the city beautiful will be 38. i'll come back in a few minutes to talk about when we turn this around. just know tonight is going to be the coldest night we've had so far this winter. >> all right, tom. thank you. right now, news 6 is pinpointing weather down to street level with meteorologist candace campos. she's kicking off our live weather coverage tonight in ocoee and that is just the beginning. stay with news 6 as she travels to the northernmost spot of the area. how's it looking in ocoee right now? >> not as cold as it's going to be in ocala in a few hours. i'll be adding more layers as

talk about a picturesque background back here. we're in ocoee at bill breeze park looking over stark lake. it's a beautiful afternoon. it's not too bad if you sit directly under the sun. you can feel the nice warmth as temperatures warm up, feeling like 55 degrees here. the coldest weather we've seen all season long now, so you need to get ready for it. let's pinpoint your neighborhood as we look into ocoee. temperatures will continue to drop into the low 40's for tonight. we're talking about nearing freezing in some spots. for ocoee primarily we're going to be dropping again into the upper 30's to low 40's. but then as you warm up into the afternoon, temperatures are going to be staying a bit below average still, not as chilly as today. but really continuing to warm up. a little warmer but still below average for this time of year, about 63 degrees. by wednesday night, again, not as cold as what we're expecting tonight. still will be a bit on the

shut down the street. news 6 reporter eric sandoval is getting answers on the ground right now. so who are they looking for? >> well, i'll get to that in a second. first, i want to show you what's going on behind me. this crowd of neighbors have come back to the backyard of this house, watching the medical examiner remove the body of the victim who was gunned down early this morning. i talked with those investigators and they tell me they issued a be on the lookout for this gunman after seeing him speed away from here. detectives say they got several 911 calls from neighbors around here this morning after they heard gunshots. deputies got here and they say they found that black male in his late 20's or early 30's dead inside this home. i talked with neighbors. they say the man who lived here just moved in about a month ago. they really didn't know a lot about him. but they also say they saw that car zoom away. let's run down who police are looking for right now.

male, wearing all black and wearing a skull cap. they say he was driving a brand-new buick. they don't have a license plate number. back out here live, detectives say they need the public's help on this. i talked with a lot of neighbors out here. they say there's a really big concern that a lot of people are not willing to help and aren't willing to come forward. we'll tell you why, coming up tonight at 6:00. for now, we're live in orlando, eric sandoval, news 6. >> thank you. orlando police are still searching for the man who they say stole a car and then crashed it. >> police say the suspect abandoned the car and then made a run for it. >> orlando police spotted the car driving recklessly near the intersection of john young parkway and followed the driver past orange blossom trail near the railroad tracks where the stolen car crashed into several other cars. you can see the aftermath. thank goodness no one was hurt in all this. we will let you know when police give us more details. >> authorities in california are

greyhound bus rolled on to its side today, killing two people and injuring 18 others. you can see here the bus overturned and landed on a median along highway 101. traffic was backed up for several miles as emergency crews cleared the scene. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the crash. one passenger says he woke up to people screaming all around him. >> i was sleeping and i woke up to the crash, heard some people scream and then we were sliding for a long time. i felt like forever. and then from there we came to a rest. we're on the side and walking on the windows, trying to gather stuff, and then looking for a way out. >> there were no other vehicles involved in this. five people were sent to the hospital. >> this afternoon, we're learning more about the moments leading up to this man's death. he died after orlando police say they were forced to shoot him. we brought you this story as breaking news last night at 11:00.

landing condos in orlando. now, news 6's troy campbell is at orlando police headquarters, getting answers from detectives. what are they saying about this? >> well, i just finished speaking to the police chief. he tells us that the suspect was carrying an air soft gun when he was shot. police are not sure exactly what kind of weapon he had at the time. we're also hearing why police even went to his residence in the first place. police say that 28-year-old eric provost was on the phone with his father last night, who then called police from another location, saying his son was not acting right and someone was possibly trying to break into his son's condo. dispatchers called provost and got him on the phone and they were on the way and provost said there was no need to show up. the police say knowing the cops were on the way, he left the apartment, walking with his air soft gun where they eventually made contact with him. it's unclear how many times he was shot but the chief says

those officers. >> knowing the officers were on the way, because our dispatcher told him that our officers were coming anyway, knowing our officers were on the way, he exited the apartment with a firearm and, you know, our officers gave him several commands which were heard by witnesses to either drop the firearm and get on the ground. he did not comply with those commands and that's when our officers fired upon the subject. he was later pronounced dead. >> we're also learning more about the two officers involved in the shooting and a previous arrest about a week and a half ago when provost was charged for allegedly stealing $88,000 out of an unlocked a.t.m. in orange county. we'll have more on both of those, coming up at 5:00. until then, live outside the orlando police headquarters, troy campbell, news 6. >> thank you. coming up at 4:00, getting

i'm not sure if that needs to be updated or not. wind speeds in new smyrna beach 14 miles per hour blowing in here from the north-northwest. 10 miles per hour in sanford and 10 in the villages and 10 in ocala and 13 in cocoa beach. big ridge of high pressure continues to be our dominant feature. big ridge to the north, pushing cold air in here. that continues. which means, without the cloud cover tonight and with the cold air funneling to the north, we're set to have our coldest night that we've had so far this winter season. there will be nights on down the road where we may get colder, but tonight is the coldest one we've had so far. clouds and rain forecast. i think you know where we're going. there's no cloud cover. there's certainly no rain. this is tomorrow night by 11 p.m., still crystal clear. tomorrow we'll start to modify the air mass and warm it back up just a smidge. tomorrow night's overnight low will be in the 40's in orlando instead of the 30's. by thursday we do see a a little cloud cover starting to return. overnight lows where you live

as of now, it looks like the lanes are looking nice and clear. it's good to go. >> thank you, candace. as temperatures start to tumble tonight, we're hearing an incredible story of survival following this weekend's destructive tornado near sarasota. emergency crews used a life-saving tool to dig a woman out of this debris. the roof of her siesta key collapsed on top of her, leaving her trapped. that's when firefighters stepped in for this rescue. >> she was about to escape her room when the roof caved in, leaving the 70-year-old with only 18 inches to move. the sarasota county fire department special operations raced to the scene. they tried to tunnel back to her, but knew there wasn't enough space to get her out. that's when they brought in airbags that are typically used in crashes to lift cars off the ground. the assistant chief says this is the first time they've used it after a tornado.

street, everybody else got their trash cans, except for he and his neighbor. this is what he was left with, his old can. he tells me that for the past three months, he's been picking up the phone, both him and his neighbor calling orange county over and over again asking for the new bins. right around october is when the county started handing out the new bins. so here's what happened today. >> okay. we put together a really great story for you. we're working on getting that for you. in the meantime the short of it is back in october, the county started out handing these new bins because they changed over collection systems. week. his neighbor has been calling every week. finally today he called us, i called the county, and these new bins have been replaced by these old bins by the new ones. i'm going to show you the new

up at 5:30. i'm going to answer the question how did this happen to this guy and what do you do if you're in the same situation? >> i'm sure he's really relieved this whole mess is taken care of >> we'll continue to check in with you, erik, thank you. >> it will be three more weeks before the prime suspect in the lonzie barton investigation goes before a judge. >> william ebron waived his right to a speedy trial as jury selection was just about to start. police say the remains likely to be those of the jacksonville toddler were found a little more than a week ago. ebron has been charged with child neglect, lying to police and tampering with evidence. lonzie's mother, lana, who was dating him when the boy disappeared last july, pleaded guilty earlier this month to child neglect and lying to police. she has not yet been sentenced. ebron's hearing was postponed to february 9th. we'll be sure to let you know what happens.

speedway reached a milestone in its multi-million dollar make-over today. here's more on the daytona rising project. >> workers spent tuesday morning installing the final seats at the daytona international speedway. but they weren't the only ones putting the new chairs together. >> it's a very unique experience. i'm very honored. as long as i've been coming over here, it's very honoring for them to have me do this. >> the speedway's longest ticket holder and the international speedway corporation had the honor of installing their own. >> that was fun. >> 101,500 seats now fill the newly renovated speedway, calling it the largest and most luxurious motorsports facility. >> i've been to many places around the world. nothing that i know of compares to this. i don't know that there's another one in the world that's spent $400 million on the fan part of the venue.

announcement about scams. >> they're ruthless criminals and they really don't care about people and they don't care about anything other than trying to intimidate you into paying them money. >> north carolina pastor told us last year he was so scared he couldn't think straight. it started with this threatening call. >> he called back. >> she was informing me that they were filing a warrant for my arrest. >> over the next 7 hours, he made multiple withdrawals from his bank and sent them money to the i.r.s. impersonators with prepaid debit cards. the total $16,000. and he's far from alone. in march of last year, about 366,000 people have been called by the scammers. now, it's more than 900,000. the total amount of money stolen has grown from 15 million to
