[real-time closed captioning provided by u.s. captioning company.] >> now at 4:00, the cold settles in as the storms move out of central florida. but the blizzard blasting the northeast right now is turning travel at orlando international airport into a nightmare. and it's nothing compared to the huge hit that areas like the carolinas saw this afternoon. mother nature is just getting started. it is a downright wild start to our weekend. good evening, i'm lisa bell. >> and i'm julie broughton. ginger is off tonight. let's go ahead and start in our own backyard. thunderstorm warnings turned into a tornado warning today in

you can see from the time lapse on our beach cam the dark clouds in and out very quickly. chief meteorologist tom sorrells kicks off our pinpoint weather coverage with how it's looking right now. it cleared out quickly for us. >> it really did. we have scattered showers out there right now, but most of it is really, really light, especially compared to today. you can see a few passing stray showers north of ormand beach. we have one pocket of activity going through parts of lake county as well. melbourne, you're not totally done. some of these coming out of osceola county may tag you until yet. from over here from celebration to kissimmee, around the hunters creek area, along 194 coming out of polk county, the rain is and it's dying on out. we're going to turn our attention to big storms and crashing temperatures and high wind. right now, the temperature is 67 in orlando.

wave done well temperature-wise. starting to slide, though. down to 67, already falling out of the 70's for most of you. i'll be back in a few minutes to track the wind into the night and tell you, pinpoint exactly how much colder we're going to be tonight and how much we do not warm up tomorrow. meteorologist candace campos was out on the roads today as all the action was happening. how you doing, candace? what did you see? >> well, now we're nice and dry, thankfully, but let's take some video of what was going on earlier today about the noontime hour, about 11 to 12:00. you can see just driving was miserable. you could barely see the roads -- the cars ahead of us. thankfully, though, what a difference a few hours makes. as we come out here live in the newsroom and pinpoint where we were at actually is minneola. look at what we can expect throughout the next few hours.

cooling back down into the mid-50's. it looks like by tomorrow, just like tom is talking about, it's not going to be warming up much, a sneak peek here, only topping off at 51 degrees out there, if you have any outdoor plans, upper 40's to lower 30's heading into saturday night. >> candace, stay home is the advice for some 75 million people in the path of the fierce winter storm battling through the east coast. if it looks bad now, it's only going to get worse. from the carolinas to new england, schools, business and the government closed early today to get people home in time. the snow has already started to accumulate, forcing the cars off the highway, at least three weather-related traffic deaths have been reported in tennessee and north carolina. >> we're asking everyone to please, be very careful. stay off the roads if you don't

spend some time with your family. >> in the meantime, long lines are forming at airports, including here at orlando international airport. here's a live look as travelers struggle to get ahead of the storm. the most recent update from o.i.a. is 77 cancellations, 19 delays. like i said earlier, though, it's not going to get better anytime soon with more snow expected through sunday. nationwide, at least 6,000 flights have been cancelled. we will have air travel updates for you throughout the night here on news 6. >> taking a look at the roadways for you now. here's a live look outside on i-4 at colonial drive. cars on the right side of the screen are heading westbound. traffic is stop and go for westbound drivers there, getting an early start to the weekend. give yourself some extra time. eastbound lanes are also starting to slow down. here's a look at the drive times for you now, if you're heading out -- well, the drive times

pinpoint weather and roads on your new wkmg app. just search wkmg in your app store. >> a crime tracker alert in orlando this afternoon. >> leaves a teenage girl terrified. orlando police say she was sitting in her bedroom last night. >> when she looked up and saw a man's face in her bedroom window. police say they got the call around 10:00 last night at a home located in the audubon park neighborhood just north of fashion square mall. the suspect in this case is dominique brace. he is 22 years old. orlando police say he was right in front of a teenager's window there last night when they got there. he had his cell phone up like he was taking pictures or video of the teenager. he ran off, dodging fences and breaking a few of them. he was finally arrested and charged with burglary and voyeurism. >> this afternoon, police say a drunk driver is to blame for

>> we just got his mugshot. now we're waiting to hear when juan carlos torres will face an orange county judge. he was arrested in the crash that happened along sand lake road and i-4. torres was driving a white toyota corolla and ran a red light before hitting the rear of the trooper's suv. no one was hurt. >> a pedi-cab driver accused of raping a customer has been found not guilty. george branard now says he's working to forgive the woman who made the claims two years ago. we spoke to branard and his family moments after the verdict was read. they said justice has prevailed and they were thankful. it took the jury 30 minutes to make their decision. troy campbell has more from volusia county. >> it's been almost two years since george branard was first arrested, accused of raping that woman. today he walked out of this courthouse a free man after a jury ruled he's innocent. >> we're very thankful for the justice system we have and god

>> after days of testimony, both the alleged victim and george branard taking the stands themselves, recalling back to that night of february 2014. branard, facing up to 15 years behind bars, not guilty, after a woman claimed he picked her up near the daytona international speedway on his pedi-cab, accusing branard of taking her into the woods and forcing sex. another pedi-cab driver finding the woman screaming in the woods. on the stand branard told the jury it was the alleged victim who forced herself on him. his attorneys are very pleased with today's verdict. >> we're very happy with what the jury found. they saw the truth. we're very thankful for the attention they put toward this. >> investigators say from the beginning branard admitted to having sex with the victim and he said she initiated the sexual activity, unbuckling his belt as

>> there was consensual sex and then it turned into something else he never expected. >> with friday's not guilty verdict, branard says he's working to forgive the woman. >> it's possible only she knows. >> i have no idea. it could be her family, her fiance. >> we also spoke with george branard's father about how the accusations have affected their family over the past two years. we'll have more from him a little later at 6:00. until then, in daytona beach, troy campbell, news 6. >> thank you, troy. before this case even went to trial, because of the outrage from the allegations, the city of daytona beach began requiring yearly background checks on all pedi-cab drivers. >> an iconic author from orange county will be celebrated this weekend. >> right now, crews are gearing up for one of the biggest local festivals of the year. the festival kicks off this weekend in eatonville. it celebrates the life of

while the storms have moved out for now, southwest of us organizers of a huge event in tampa are preparing for weather to invade the huge pirate parade. this is the annual gas event. is it in limbo? >> it's a huge event and they're not letting rain get in the way but they're making changes to make sure workers are safe. they're altering the schedule while the weather holds up. storms are expected to blow in tomorrow. extra attention is being put in to securing parade necessities like tents and grandstands. >> all of the schedules are being tweaked a little bit and being moved up so we can get as much work done while the weather is nice.

more lightning, no more warnings. i can go have dinner. it's all good. right now, temperature readings are okay. we're doing 70 in sanford. 67 does it in the city beautiful, way up there in palm coast, look at you, 67. 63 in new smyrna beach. across the country, the big story is the big cold and the blizzard. 34 degrees right now in memphis. big snow in nashville. all in this area over to rally eigh durham is the bull's-eye. big, big snow. temperatures dropping across the area. jacksonville. there's the blizzard. look at that mess. from nashville, tennessee to louisville, around through west virginia, most of virginia. this is all freezing rain and snow north of that. the bull's-eye of the snow be washington, d.c. a couple of feet, maybe more. that's a bunch. for us tonight, lingering cloud cover streaking through here.

there won't be any big storms tomorrow. you might miss the storms. the wind is going to be whooshing in here, pushing in at times. we don't get a lot of rain tomorrow, but man, oh, man, do we get the wind. the wind is bringing in the cold air. wait until you see the overnight lows in a moment. not a whole lot. i'll show you in a minute. 43 is the overnight low tonight in ocala and 44 in leesburg and 46 in sanford and 51 in melbourne. official forecast in orlando tonight, that didn't drop, that's supposed to say 46 under a partly cloudy sky with winds here's tomorrow. >> there you go. 47 is the overnight low tonight. by 8 a.m., we bounce back to 47 after a low of 46. windy and cold. the high tomorrow is 56 degrees. by noon we'll be at 51. no rain, but windy and cold with wind from the west-northwest pushing up to 40 miles per hour. that's some good wind.

opportunity to bring jennifer home where shes belongs. >> one decade since his daughter disappeared, jennifer kesse's dad and orlando police update us on the mystery. but first, we're pinpointing big changes with your weekend weather. >> the storms have moved out of our area now, chief meteorologist tom sorrells is pinpointing the cool-down coming our way. >> here's the satellite image that will tell just about the whole story. come with me and look. cold front came through this morning, brought in all the big explosive problems we had. the squall line was impressive, strong enough that we had a severe thunderstorm watch in effect that was cancelled early because all the energy got scoured away by the approach of the cold front. we have dry slotted for the most part. we're tracking a few scattered showers. watch the cold air come

the gulf and the westerly wind the gulf and the westerly wind is really going to howl on us during the next 24 hours and bring in the cold air and turn into a big blizzard up north along the south carolina line, sleet and snow in the heart of old virginia. here at home tonight, we're getting rid of the rain. the scattered showers have been prevalent throughout the afternoon. a few more echoes coming into rural osceola county and central brevard over the last hour. most of the rain has slowed down from orlando to kissimmee to the west, things have died away. where does that leave us? temperature-wise, we're still doing okay right now. you should get outside this afternoon and enjoy what we have. tomorrow we're not going to be this warm. it is 67 right now in orlando. 66 in ocala. and check out the wind. this is the real deal. the wind is whooshing in here from the west at 20. in ocala a westerly flow at 16 in leesburg and 17-mile-an-hour wind right there in orlando. trust me when i tell you -- i

trust me, sorry -- please believe me when i tell you the wind speeds only increase throughout the night tonight and tomorrow and what it does to your temperature in minutes. >> all right, tom. we do trust you. this is time lapse video taken around noon over downtown orlando. you can see the dark wall of clouds move in and seconds later the rains started to hit and it wouldn't be that long before everything cleared out for us. meteorologist candace campos joins us with the snapshots after that happened. pics from viewers. >> it got wet and wild pretty quick earlier today. the viewers were the best for today. we got tons of shots. one in minneola which you can see the citrus tower throughout windshield. that's a really pretty shot. again, that is in minneola. we were actually there driving through. another spot that we also are seeing in geneva, they also sent us this really cool shot of the wind.

weather move throughout the geneva area. the next spot we found is in new smyrna beach in the bull's-eye of the tornado warning that tom and troy were staying on air pinpointing exactly down to the street level where that severe level is. here's the cloud cover and all the dark -- you can see the dark clouds over the bridge overlooking new smyrna beach. again, the viewers did a really great job of sending in the photos. keep sending them our way. we love to see them and even post them on air. >> thank you, candace. we'll see you in a little while. certainly some great pictures out there. the storms moved through very quickly. that was nice. our weather is pretty mild compared to what the northeast is already dealing with. the impact, though, is being felt at orlando international airport. we just got an update from workers there. they say 100 flights have now been delayed at o.i.a. and there have been 77 cancellations and counting. >> in fact, united just

>> the parents of a woman missing for a decade addressed the public today in hopes of finding their daughter. it was a case that shocked central florida back in 2006. jennifer kesse was last seen alive. news 6 reporter justin warmoth is at orlando police headquarters. >> no one should go through not being found. >> the family of jennifer kesse says they get tips on a regular basis as to where their daughter might be, but so far, nothing has panned out. the same story they've gotten for the last decade. >> someone saw something. and it's just -- it's so past

the hope that i have. >> the then 24-year-old hasn't been heard from since january 23rd, 2006. detectives believe she left for work the next morning, but she never showed up. her car, a chevy malibu, was found later at a condo complex a mile away from hers. >> it is someone in the public that makes that call that enables the people in law enforcement behind us to do what they do best and truly find jennifer. >> the orlando police department hoped this surveillance image of a person of interest would help create leads but that person has yet to be identified. kesse's father has this message for whoever abducted his daughter. >> whatever reason you may have had 10 years ago to take a human being, which just cannot even come into our minds, we can't even think of that, your usefulness for what you took her for, it has to be done. it has to be over. and if you've done something

breaking news this morning, the victim shot at the marquee complex is expected to be okay. we're also working to get results surrounding the security concerns at the site, right across the street from campus. news 6 mark lehman has the story. >> for those here at the marquee apartments, the sight of crime scene tape behind me was unsettling but something they've seen before. with safety now top of mind, students spoke to us about the complex which has seen its share of recent troubles. >> really? >> yeah. >> this is the first time i'm hearing about it. >> that was the reaction from daniel harris and others at the marquee apartments, the details from a shooting last night were left undisclosed to those living footsteps away. >> but many admit the scene is a familiar one for the troubled community near ucf. formally known as sterling central, the complex changed its name after four armed robberies in a few month's time and enough security. >> more patrols, more cameras, and security gate being added,

>> changes that seem to be working, at least noticeably for students. >> does that make you feel safe? >> yeah, it better. crime hasn't gone down. >> that is, until just last month. that's when several students here were robbed at gunpoint inside their apartment. harris says another violent crime here is alarming but questions if anything could have been done to prevent it. >> not really. unless you start having soldiers standing around, but that's about it. can't really prevent all crime. >> when i spoke with apartment management last month, they said they were in the process of installing more than 500 security cameras here at this complex. while management says they're cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation, at this point it's unclear if it any of those cameras captured the shooting that happened here last night. >> a spokesperson for the marquee released this statement saying, quote, "we're in the process of pulling camera footage. whatever is found will be immediately turned over to law enforcement authorities and become part of their investigation."

two officers at the garage entrances during their normal duties when they heard gunshots. in regard to the 500 cameras around the property, the management team says most of the interior building cameras are up and working. the property is about 75% done with installation." >> three strikes, you're out, at least for one suspected crook caught on camera in brevard county. anchor matt austin joins us with more on the surveillance video. >> that's right. three attempts and he leaves with nothing about you a broken fire extinguisher. oh, and some shiny new surveillance video with them in it trying to do all this. it was taken from the chevron gas station in mims along highway 46. armed with a fire extinguisher, you see the suspect start to build up some momentum and he's practicing and then he tries several swings. no success except for the extinguisher bursts at one point. you can see it smoking up there. that's when deputies say he moved to not one, but two

>> well, two states away but dealing with completely different weather woes. this afternoon, this is what the drive looked like for people in spartanburg south carolina. snow and ice blanketed the roads, causing some big problems out there. closer to home, news 6 hit the highways when the storms started to roll through our area. we certainly didn't see any snow, but plenty of rain. luckily it cleared out quickly. chief meteorologist tom sorrells is pinpointing what lies ahead and he joins us in three minutes. >> the c.d.c. is adding eight more countries to its list of places where a mosquito-borne virus is growing. >> dozens of cases of the zika virus has been confirmed in the u.s., and the virus has been linked to birth defects. the c.d.c. added countries in south america, the caribbean and

love the weather this weekend. cold weather lovers will. the rest of you, not so much. here we go, saying goodbye to the rain. it has slowed down tremendously in the last couple of hours. the big frontal zone passing through. what's left behind it, just the light scattered showers. nothing of any real big significant note, certainly nothing of any danger. we had the tornado warning earlier. we had the severe thunderstorm watch that came off the clock really early and these little scattered showers you're seeing that are left behind are dying out rather rapidly. so we've turned the corner in that regard. on. how did we do today? the overnight low this morning was 55. we've rebounded to 70. the colder air started to filter in. normal would be 79 and 41. we're right there in the normal range for a daytime high. the daytime high today was 70 or 71 in sanford, 68 in leesburg

right now, on the way down. we've already dropped to 67 in orlando, 66 does it in leesburg. 66 in ocala and 66 all over brevard county. here's what you really need to be paying attention to. not only to temperatures that i just showed you, which for now are good, look at this wind. coming from the west at 16 in leesburg and 20 in ocala and 12-mile-an-hour wind in melbourne and a 15-mile-an-hour wind in palm coast. it's going to gust a whole lot more than that as we go through the night tonight. the low is cranked up and going this way. now that the front has swung through, all of our wind will be pushing from the west and all you're seeing out here, all of that is the cold air that's going to funnel in. wind gusts are a little on the high side. look at the wind gusts. no significant wind gust in orlando but a wind gust of 25 in kissimmee, 26 in leesburg and 28 in ocala and 36, we had a 36-mile-an-hour wind gust in the last half-hour in new smyrna

overnight tonight, the wind doesn't really die down. as a matter of fact, it ramps up from about, say, 20 to 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts tonight to more like 40 tomorrow. when you wake up tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in the 40's and the wind just keeps pushing. through the day tomorrow, the sky clears up. we get a lot of sunshine going on and we keep that clear sky all the way through tomorrow night which means tomorrow night we really get cold. tonight we stay in the 40's. tomorrow night, 30's. then on sunday we start to turn it around. where you live tonight for overnight lows, 40's just about everywhere. southern brevard county, you'll be in the 50's. calling the low in orlando 47 degrees. clearing, cooler, wind from the west, gusting to 30. here is tomorrow. first thing tomorrow morning, the temperature reading is 47. by noon, only 51. and we climb slowly to a high tomorrow of 56 degrees.
