>> new pictures of a rotten wake-up call. first, this blast of winter weather up and down the east coast, from several feet of snow up north to snow flurries here in central florida. 10's of thousands of people are trying to defrost being many of them children after spending the night at the open air citrus bowl. it is a dangerously cold night. most of you are under freeze warnings, and the wind chill advisories are up. thousands of families shivered

feels like temperatures in the 20's. >> that's right. the feels like is what is important here. it wasn't really the air temperature. it was the wind that was killing those folks at the citrus bowl tonight. we have a freeze warning in effect for most of central florida. it does not include osceola or brevard county as it stands now, but you are under a wind chill advisory, it will feel like 20's in the morning. they have upgraded the freeze warning in marion county to a hard freeze warning, which means there could be significant damage to plant life. if you haven't covered it up yet you have some time, there had and do that. we are upper 30's in ocala, 33, just shy of freezing in palm coast, 43 in orlando, and 39 in sanford. these are the air temperatures,

winds, coming in out of the west and northwest, up to 15 miles per hour. so that is subtracting from the air temperature. it feels like 30's in central florida, even the brevard county the feels like number, only 36 in melbourne. cold and windy conditions persisting overnight. by sunrise tomorrow, we expect to be just above freezing in orlando, 32 in leesburg, 30 in the villages. the coldest in ocala, the hard freeze warning, 28 by sunrise, and 29 palm coast. it is not going to last too long. we will be in the 70's in this upcoming forecast. >> anchor: it is a cold night for anybody to be outside, pets or people. just the past hour, tells of thousands of people, many of them families finally got inside and thawed out after spending the night at the annual monitor jam.

officers are on the street enforcing the traffic ban in place. at least 17 deaths are now linked to the severe weather on the east coast. highways in pennsylvania are shut down. look at this, with tractor-trailers, some of them jackknifed. others just stuck in the snow more than 13 hours. in other place like new jersey, the winter storm is bringing some nasty flooding. and this is just some of the coastal flooding in sea asle, new jersey, governor christie is continuing people to stay home so crews can clear the roads. the new york governor issued a strong message. >> no one wants to have to arrest people being but the nypd will take any measures necessary to keep our roads clear in the middle of this emergency. >> anchor: the storm is expected

on new york before it moves out. paramedics rushed a mother and toddler to the hospital after their van collided with i -- a car tonight. a chevy side swiped the mom's minivan. the mother and toddler were immediately taken to the hospital. we are working to find out more on the conditions of everybody involved in this crash. a crime alert in flagler county, deputies are on the hunt for thieves who smashed their way into more than a dozen cars. we are getting a look the at damage left behind. investigators say the crooks targeted the cars at hamilton and holiday inn, 18 vehicles, you can see the glass on the seat there. one of them was stolen but later found in volusia county. the sheriff's office says the group acted fast. investigators tell us this smash and grab is possibly-related to several others in volusia and

if you have any information, you are asked to call police. police are on the hunt for an inmate on the run since yesterday. tonight we are learning he could be with his girlfriend and her three-year-old child. here are the pictures of escaped inmate and his girlfriend. police believe they are now armed. we are told bullock was staying at the release center, and cut off his ankle bracelet and disappeared. he was doing time for robbing a home in 2009, where he fired his gun several times, but his sentence was almost over. if you see him or know where he may be hiding, asked to call police. firefighters have figured out a deadly house fire was not accidental. the flames shot out from the mobile home, 6:00 this morning at the siesta mobile home park

first responders say they found a man dead inside and a woman fighting for her life. she was taken to the hospital but died shortly after. officials won't say what evidence they found inside the home that makes the fire and death suspicious, however, a few neighbors we have spokesperson to have some idea. >> my mom heard gunshots around 12:00, 1:00 last night. >> we are talking to neighbors, and finding out what they might have seen or heard but have not confirmed anything at this time. >> anchor: investigators say the fire torched the entire immediate. a man taken into custody after they say he dragged a state trooper during a traffic stop. in the middle, that is marcus dallas. this started in semoran. investigators say the drive was out of the car at the time and ran back inside to take off,

>> nba legend and former orlando magic star shaquille o'neal made a special trip to gainesville to play basketball with a group of kids. the big man in this neighborhood this comes more than a week after somebody called police complained these kids were playing too how'dly in the street. when an officer arrived instead of telling them to leave, he decided to join in and play with them. probably remember this. shaq heard about the story and wanted to spry the kids. he went to gainesville, met with the officer and went to this neighborhood to meet these kids to play basketball with them. that's awesome. we know military members are very brave men and women, right, but this video proves this. >> even elizabeth with the wind

it literally was freezing. that's not exaggerating. >> you are from new york, i am from illinois. you know, we have seen cold weather before, it was gnarly tonight. i hope you have somewhere warm to hang your hat this evening, because we have freeze warnings all over central florida. the only two counties, osceola and brevard county. however,, you are under wind chill advisories until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning as we are expecting it to continue feeling like upper 20's through that time period. the change through 6:00, we have an upgrade to a hard freeze warning in marion county, which isn't a huge temperature difference. it means plant life could be more affected. if you have tropical plants, bring them inside, if it is in landscaping, cover it up. a few more tips to go with those

i really urge you to bring pets indoors. they are not accustom to this, it will be very hard to stay outside overnight. if you are using a space heater, meteorologist make sure you have it in an open area. keep it away from the drapes and furniture or fabric that could catch fire. those are very, very dangerous. we have lots of blue sky once we cleared out the morning clouds. as we told you off the top of the show, in jacksonville, we had snow flurries. the main winter storm event is in the northeast, mid atlantic. you can see the white spiraling in off the atlantic ocean, pushing the snowfall totals up even higher. nasty, nasty stuff up this way. it will take them days to recover. we only topped out at 56, even under the bright sunshine, 52 in ocala, 53 in palm coast. we are at 43 in orlando. look at the 30's already, it is not even midnight.

33 in palm coast, and 37 in ocala. of course as we have been telling you, that is only part of the story. the winds are still gusting between 10 to 15 miles per hour. you factor all that in, here's what it actually feels like. 37 in orlando, also northern osceola, feels below freezing in daytona beach as well as -- deltona, as well as ocala. with the warning in effect most of the area overnight, we expect the air temperature to be 33 sunrise in orlando being look at the 20, to the north and west in ocala, and 29 for the overnight low in palm coast. sunrise tomorrow, not expecting anything as far as cloud cover. that would actually help us out and provide insulation. the only thing going on are clouds over the warm water of the gulf stream. we will have a perfectly clear and chilly day again tomorrow.
