their victim. the reason i pulled you over today, i just wanted to know what is the emergency? >> a role reversal on a miami highway. why a driver pulled over an officer. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the iowa caucuses, the first vote of the 2016 presidential campaign is just hours away. today, candidates make their final pitch and campaigns will do their best to make sure their supporters actually show up. the final pre-caucus poll, shows donald trump with a five-point lead over ted cruz. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is just three points ahead of bernie sanders. but because democrats can horse trade, former maryland governor martin o'malley could become a king maker.

>> good morning. >> reporter: for the first time tonight, voters will have their say in the 2016 race for president and candidates will campaign until the very last moment. hoping to dampen donald trump's momentum, texas senator ted cruz made his final pitch to iowa voters sunday. >> if everyone here brings nine other people to the caucuses tomorrow night, we will win the caucuses tomorrow. we will win the nomination and in november 2016! >> reporter: during an event in sioux city, trump pushed back this time labeling cruz dishonest and deceptive for sending out this flyer. >> voter violation, it's like an people in iowa, that is really terrible. it's a fraud, as far as i'm concerned. >> reporter: forecasts here in iowa are calling for snow in parts of the state beginning tonight, which could have an

volunteers for both bernie sanders and hillary clinton knocked on doors and made calls late into the night, as the two candidates made their closing arguments. >> we have a radical idea. together, we will create an economy that works for all of us, not just the 1%. >> i will stand up and fight for you every location of this campaign and then when we win, i will fight for you in the white house! >> reporter: clinton lost iowa during her presidential bid in 2008. political analysts say this time around, the secretary of state is working on her like ability. >> she has focused a lot on her relationship with people, she has focused a little bit more on middle class issues. >> reporter: with polls showing tight races on both sides, the fight for iowa could come down to the wire. republican candidates will hold rallies throughout the day today in iowa. and on the democratic side, clinton and sanders will hold caucus night events. >> marlie hall in des moines, thanks a lot. the nation's first primary

days away. a just released poll finds donald trump holding a commanding league among likely republican voters. and bernie sanders is leading hillary clinton by 23 points among likely democratic primary voters. we will talk with hillary clinton about the iowa caucuses coming up on "cbs this morning." well, two virginia tech students are in custody this morning, accused in the death of a 13-year-old girl. nicole lovell disappeared wednesday from her blacksburg, virginia home, and police say she was abducted by 18-year-old david eisenhauer. and 19-year-old natalie keepers is accused of helping to dispose of her body. >> based on evidence collected today, we have determined that eisenhauer and nicole were acquainted prior to her disappearance. >> police have not released a motive or cause of death. the autopsy is set for today.

after severe weather swept police say a driver in san diego was killed when a large oak tree fell onto a moving car. powerful winds downed power lines and trees across the a home south of los angeles was hit hard. >> the whole tree started and i came back and get ready to pop. slow motion. it was down. >> heavy snow triggered a massive pileup near the california/first half line. the crash involving more than two dozen cars and trucks closed amtrak is investigating objects that struck a train from washington to new york. the train was hit sunday evening in north philadelphia. the train stopped and police boarded to investigate before continuing the journey. no injuries were reported by the 201 people on board. identified a person of interest

motorcycle gang brawl. one person was shot and killed fight between rival clubs at a motorcycle expo. one of the groups was made up of police and military members. no arrests have been made. isis claims responsibility for a triple bombing in syria that killed at least 50 people. the blast sunday targeted a mostly shiite suburb south of damascus. attackers detonated a car bomb at a bus stop. then as rescuers rushed to the scene, two suicide bombers set off explosives. the bombings come as peace talks begin in geneva. the world health organization convenes an emergency meeting today on the zika outbreak. w.h.o. says up to 4 million people in the americas could get the mosquito-born illness. the virus is linked to severe birth defects. a vaccine for widespread use is months or even years away. excitement is building for super bowl 50 next sunday.

panthers arrived yesterday in the san francisco bay area and fans are getting a head start on the football frenzy with a kickoff of a week full of events. jamie yuccas is in san francisco. jamie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. it's more than 30 years since san francisco hosted a super bowl and the city wanted to make sure the party got started in a big way. the nfl experience. >> yea! >> reporter: and super bowl city. >> we just want to welcome you. we want to thank you and, most importantly, we want you to have fun. >> reporter: both got marching over the weekend. people from all around the san francisco area came to play. like jennifer waltz who is not shy about getting into the game. or who she is rooting for. >> it was awesome! i'm super excited! i did it for the broncos. that's what we are going to do is score a touchdown and spike that ball. >> reporter: the security is tight at all events. officers with long guns and

easily noticeable, but it did not stop thousands of people from coming out. >> we expect tens of thousands every day. probably a million people or more to the entire region over the course of super bowl week. >> reporter: the bonus weekend was a real touchdown for locals. they got a nice head start ahead of all the thousands of football fans headed into town later on this week! whoo! >> yea! >> reporter: both exhibits have interactive exhibits and games and plenty of places to take selfies but for most families, it was all about having fun together. >> this is awesome! we are a big football family, obviously. >> reporter: the city also got into the spirit. they relit the bay bridge and set off fireworks all kicking off a week of memorable moments ahead of super bowl 50. now tonight will mark the first time that media day is held at night.

claudia castillo caught the friday. she says she reached 80 miles an hour and said she could not catch up with the police car. eventually, both cars pulled over. the officer told her he was on his way to work and did not believe he was speeding. miami-dade police are investigating the incident. separation surgery for the smallest ever twin babies and a kentucky fire is under investigation. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the lexington "herald leader of kentucky" says investigators are trying to determine the cause of saturday's massive fire that destroyed a seven-acre stockyard and other businesses in lexington. there were no reports of injuries. this morning, area residents who suffer from respiratory problems are urged to stay indoors due to the poor air quality. the "deseret news" of salt

is mourning the deaths of lgbt members sins november. the death in four states are being blamed on increased anxiety over the church's new rules that bar same sex married couples from the church. >> how do we stop the bleeding of our youth that are gay? and, actually, the bleeding of the families that have those gay children. >> the deaths could not be independently verified. the mormon church says it does not reject lgbt members. "wall street journal" says the centers for disease control could declare as early as today an end to the e. coli outbreak at chipotle restaurants. the outbreak sickened chipotle customers in nine states since october. the source of the contamination has not been determined. the "daily mail" of london says doctors in switzerland have successfully separated conjoined twin sisters.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. a former police officer in marietta, ohio, is hoping to keep ajax, his canine companion of four years. matt hickey retired one week ago and he was told the only way to keep the doing would be to buy it at a city auction. more than $57,000 was collected on a go fund me page to help hickey keep the dog. >> seeing this is like, my goodness, i am so wrong. there is so much good out there and so many kind people and so many people that want to see a wrong righted. >> the bidding starts this month.

the auction, the remaining money will go to other canine units to purchase bullet-proof vests for the dog. on the cbs "moneywatch," gas prices flip and google's drone project. stock exchange with that and more. stock markets in asia lower on a weak manufacturing report from china. the shanghai composite lost 1%. japan's nikkei added 2% to finish at a one-month high. gasoline prices are continuing to edge down. aaa says the average price of a gallon nationwide is $1.80. this time last year, the price was $2.05 a gallon. facebook will reportedly ban the social media site and on instagram its photo sharing service. facebook is a marketplace to buy having to undergo background checks. the move is meant to slow the sale of unlicensed gun transactions. and google is testing solar-powered drones in an effort to deliver high-speed
