i know you guys always have a good time back there. but i'm live at power 95.3. we're live talking everything grammys and one person in this room right now is a grammy winner. here's the other hint. it's not me. we'll tell you who it is and we'll talk to dejay nasty about who he thinks it is tonight. more coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. a new deadly hit-and-run investigation, this time in cocoa. and it comes the same day troopers unveiled a new awareness campaign to combat hit-and-run crashes. the jogger was killed at dean avenue off satellite boulevard outside of cocoa off the 520. here's more on the investigation. >> troopers say the man's body was found down here in this swampy ditch. they also tell us they found car parts. because of that, they think the

it may have front-end damage specifically to the headlights and the turn signal light. >> and i stood five feet away from him. >> jim reynolds tells us he was the second person in this intersection this morning to notice a man's body was laying lifeless on the side of the road. troopers say when the jogger didn't come home, his friends and family came out here looking for him. troopers picked up pieces of the car that hit him, a gray chrysler chrysler. >> too often hit-and-run drivers don't pay, troopers say. >> unfortunately we're here to discuss hit and runs. we had another fatal hit-and-run crash this morning. >> just as troopers were about to announce their new awareness campaign to prevent the growing number of hit-and-run crashes, 92,000 last year killed 186 people. troopers found out they have another one they have to try and

>> so why are the number of hit and runs in central florida growing? news 6 has discovered a loophole in the law. we've also discovered what it seems the problem is out here on this road, largely, according to neighbors, it's speed. i'm working on those angles for you when i see you again at 5 and 6:00. >> we just had a big investigation on this very issue last week. erik von ancken, thank you. >> also right now, we're pinpointing scattered showers on the radar. >> yeah, but the big rain is coming overnight. chief meteorologist tom sorrells pinpointing hour by hour your accurate forecast. >> here we go. take a look at where the rain is right now. these are the showers off the shoreline here off the east coast. some of these may meander on land in the next couple of hours. decent rain coming across lake okeechobee now but this and that is not the big deal for the overnight. this, here's your big deal. a cold front from jackson, mississippi to the north.

14 hours from now, 5, 6:00 tomorrow morning. daytona beach is grayed over. that's the way it is in central florida right now. it's not raining in most spots, but man 0 man is it gray. it's 72 in ocala and 73 in kissimmee and 72 in sanford. at o.i.a. we're at 73 right now and we'll hang there for about an hour. by 6 p.m., 72. come the 7:00 hour, 68. we're cloudy with stray showers for your on-the-town forecast this evening. overnight tonight, heavier rains rolls in. i'll be back to pinpoint the arrival of the rain and talk about how quickly we make it back close to 80. >> all right, tom. thank you. >> also developing, the urgent search at sea for a missing boater in brevard county. coast guard rescuers are trying to find this man, 38-year-old lloyd chamberlain. his boat washed up in indian

friends say he never came back on a trip from the atlantic yesterday. authorities searched the boat and found his cell phone but can't say whether he was wearing a life vest. the paper reports the coast guard is adding a bigger boat and aircraft to help with the search efforts. right now, the waves are rough out there. so pinpointing the conditions live right now is meteorologist candace campos. she joins us now live from cocoa. candace, it is pretty rough out there. >> oh, absolutely. unfortunately there's a small craft advisory in effect yesterday, throughout today and could be extended into tuesday because of that strong cold front that's moving in. right now the seas are clocking anywhere between 5 and 7 feet. the waters are rough. winds are picking up from the southeast about 15 to 20 knots right offshore. even stronger with gail warnings even further out over the atlantic waters. it's not the day to be out on the boat whether it's throughout the overnight, through today and even tomorrow.

the winds will die down later on this week and that's when we might have a green light to head back out over the water. that's certainly the case, though. a small craft advisory is remaining throughout the night and possibly extending into tomorrow. boaters will also have to deal with the rough seas and a chance for rain which is the chance here in cocoa. temperatures are going to stay pretty mild throughout the mid-60's throughout this afternoon and into the evening hours. there is that strong cold front that will be moving in throughout the overnight and into early tomorrow morning. so folks here in cocoa, do be aware there will be a good chance for rain for you. look how quickly, though, temperatures start to clear -- conditions start to clear up and temperatures start to warm up by the middle part of the afternoon, back into the mid-70's. it looks like the cold front won't be ushering in a drastic cool-down, though, for folks here in cocoa. >> bottom line is if you don't have to be out on a boat, avoid it at all costs. >> thank you, candace campos

as we take a live look along the volusia coast, pinpoint weather changes anytime from your smartphone with the news 6 pinpoint weather app. search wkmg in your app store. >> this afternoon, we're learning more about an r.v. crash that left one person dead. detectives say the driver veered off the road, hit a tree and the r.v. burst into flames. it happened this morning on u.s. 1 and i-95 in ormand beach. police have the area taped off from the exxon gas station to a dairy queen. people who heard the crash were able to rescue one man from the rv. he has serious burns and taken to halifax hospital. police say another person was inside the r.v. and they were unable to be rescued because the fire was just too intense. we'll let you know as soon as we learn what caused the rv to burst into flames. >> breaking right now at 4:00, another case of the zika virus has been reported in florida, bringing the total to 21 cases in the state. the florida department of health

>> this afternoon, a heated debate brewing on the campaign trail over whether president obama or the next commander in chief should nominate antonin scalia's successor, the supreme court justice who passed away suddenly this weekend during a hunting trip in texas. his body is now back in the washington, d.c. area where lawmakers are now battling over what to do next. with four conservatives and four liberals, the nominee would ultimately tip the balance of the court. >> the president has the right

new supreme court justice. >> we cannot afford to have antonin scalia replaced by the nominees he's put there in the past. >> yesterday, a justice of the peace determined the 79-year-old died of natural causes. >> we're following breaking news right now in orange county where the sheriff's office is working a death investigation. we're told two people died inside a pine hills home. the sheriff's office has set up a media staging area. we have a crew on the way. of course, we'll let you know when we learn more about this breaking situation. >> florida's python challenge in the everglades has officially ended. >> now we're waiting to find out just how many of the snakes were collected during the nearly month long hunt. on friday, the total number was 102. that's far more than was collected during the 2013 hunt.

this year, more than a thousand people signed up to hunt the snakes, considered a threat to the everglades. hunters who catch the most pythons and the longest snakes will be awarded prizes up to $1500. the winners won't be announced until later this month, on february 27th. >> at 6:00 tonight, hundreds of people are expected in brevard county to remember a rockledge high school teacher. police say sandra cook's husband killed her earlier this month. the math teacher and previous candidate for teacher of the year was found dead inside her melbourne home. detectives believe her estranged husband, ricky cook, broke in and killed her before turning the gun on himself. tonight's public memorial will be held at the stadium on merle road in rockledge. it begins at 6:00. >> well, in case you missed it, an orlando magic player defied the laws of gravity over the weekend making headlines for this huge performance during the nba dunk contest.

starting to warm up, but it's turning a little volatile overnight. >> we did get some rain finally. my lawn is kind of crunchy. >> it seems like it rained last night. maybe that's me, i don't know. >> heavy dew. >> look at the few spotty showers out there right now off the coast. most of these are not going to factor in to the forecast. they are kind of going almost due north. some of these down south, outside of lake okeechobee outside of the turnpike, those may roll over the top of you in the next couple of hours to get you going. here's the big cold front, from jackson to new orleans tonight, going to cruise this way and the moisture flows in from the gulf coast on top of you. i can't rule out a small dosing of rain between now and 2 a.m. it's beyond 2 a.m. when things really get to rolling. i'll show you in a moment. overnight lows this morning, we're down into the 50's and 40's for the most part. we hit 46 in ocala, 50 in the villages and 52 did it for the

tonight we're not going to be nearly that cool. we'll hang in the 60's all night long before the rain shows up and changes everything tomorrow. 72 right now in ocala. 73 in the villages. we're 72 in sanford. 73 out at o.i.a. 71 does it in daytona beach and 70 from the cape down to cocoa beach. winds are a huge part of our equation tonight. here we go with the wind pushing in here from the southeast at 10 in orlando and 12 in ocala and a 14-mile-an-hour wind in kissimmee you see the red boxes out here? big tornado watch boxes. the energy from the storm system stays up there. while you've got a tornado watch box in the panhandle, nothing doing down here. here's the water vapor loop. here's the cold front coming on in behind it. all that orange and rust color in there, that's the stuff

radio partners, power 95 foi .3 ahead of tonight's big grammy show. >> but first, a college party turns deadly. three bethune-cookman university students shot, one a football player killed. news 6 investigates what went wrong during what police chief considers a typical night for the college kids. the college kids packed the indigo golf club in daytona indigo golf club in daytona beach. >> it's been a violent year at bethune-cookman university. the suspected shooter remains behind bars tonight but his attorney says he has no business being there. >> we managed to get out of there in time because it could lead to, you know, gun violence. >> and it did. police say a shooting outside the indigo shores country club stemmed from a fight inside the

lamont postell. he left the club to get a gun from the car and killed a guy and two other students. he's now behind bars but his attorney says he shouldn't be. >> my compliant assures me he was consistent with his statement to law enforcement and saying that he was knocked out, beaten up and unconscious. >> she says not only was he out cold from the fight, there was no way he could have retrieved a gun from his car. >> the witness said he went to his car and got a gun and came back into the club. my client doesn't have a car. >> she says while her client was passed out, someone drove him to a nearby house where he later woke up to phone messages saying he was wanted. she says he did the right thing by turning himself in. >> a guilty person runs away. a person who doesn't have anything to hide doesn't mind coming forward saying here i am, i know you want me, but i'm not the guy.

store. >> tonight the daring and fiery escape that saved a family's life. emergency crews tell news 6 they climbed out the window of their burning home seconds before the roof just collapsed. the fire broke out on stone street east of spring garden avenue in de land. news 6 reporter johnny fernandez found out how the family is recovering tonight. >> hours after flames ripped through this house on stone street, smoke is still coming out of the roof. >> i think everybody got out all right and everybody is safe. >> she's a family friend of the homeowner. she says this morning the family is still in awe after they destroyed their home. >> by the time they realized it was a very short period of time, you know, that it went real quick. >> de land firefighters say the saved them. when they got out here at 1:34 this morning, crews on scene say the family had escaped through a window after they smelled smoke. firefighters rescued the family

later, that's when the roof collapsed. >> be careful. have smoke detectors. you know, things can happen in a split-second. >> the family who lives here says what shocks them the most is no one was hurt and today they're coming back to pick up what's left of their house. >> the cause of the fire is still unknown. an investigation is ongoing by the state fire marshal. in de land, johnny fernandez news 6. >> well, exactly one month from today, florida's presidential primary gets underway. >> the deadline to register to vote is tomorrow, february 16th. if you plan to vote in a primary, you must be registered with one of florida's major political parties. so if you're registered as non-partisan or independent, you'll not be able to catch a ballot on march 15th. you must also have a valid photo i.d. with your signature on it to vote. you can always check with your

a possible suspected hit-and-run driver who crashed into a south daytona home. police are asking derek bell to come speak with them about what actually happened. we're told the car plowed into a home at the river gulf townhomes 11:30 wednesday night. the driver ran the stop sign at bellville road and slammed into the home. the kitchen was littered with debris. investigators used d.n.a. from blood left behind to help find bell. police said the car was not reported stolen but say it was a rental. no one inside the home was hurt. >> "star wars" fans are excited about this news today. we learned that filming has started and there are new actors joining the cast. "episode viii" will follow ray in her epic journey. matt austin is joining us now. what can we expect for the next chapter? >> i don't know any of those names you just said. cameras are rolling and the cast

i'm not looking for any warnings. there might be one severe thunderstorm warning for a while, maybe two. we're not talking about a big outbreak. we're just talking about a passage of the storms coming through. right now, the temperature reading is 71 in melbourne. daytona beach, 71. winds from the south-southeast at 8 miles per hour. everyone is in the low 70's. no one has fallen into the 60's just yet. it is 70 in palm coast, the cape and cocoa beach, 72 from the villages to leesburg down to 72 in sanford and 73 in orlando. wind speeds, okay, this is kind of pushing around kind of wind. anytime you get the wind, blowing like this, 15 miles per hour, something's afoot. either the sea breeze is rolling in or the changes are coming. and changes are knocking on the door. take a look at this right now. this is the visible satellite. i talk about this all the time. you see the eruptions going on. see this? see the texture building on the clouds in the gulf of mexico? that's the stuff that's going to

overnight and the cold front comes in and pushs it all the way. we'll be getting rid of the visible satellite when the sun goes down here within the next hour or two. you see it fading away. for now, know the moisture is on the way. tornado problems here. it warmed up nicely today. here's the breakout. tonight at 10:00, everyone is watching the grammys and everything is okay. no worries. but take a look. 3:00 in the morning, rumblings from gainesville to ocala as the storm system moves in. here we go about 5:00. from 4 and 5:00, it pushes into seminole, orange and osceola counties and out to volusia. that's what it looks like by 6:00. by 7 or 8:00, it's over, gone, done by 8:30 in the morning. the day tomorrow is going to be morning showers. we'll get the sun throughout the afternoon and we'll warm right back up close to 80. overnight lows tonight, upper 50's, low 60's. beautiful. here's tomorrow.
