ahead, political futures are on the line for republican hopefuls like marco rubio and john kasich today. both tried making last stands in their home states yesterday. meantime on the democratic side, hillary clinton is trying to avoid any surprise upsets today. bernie sanders riled up supporters late last night in chicago, urging them to take him to victory. >> let us see this great state help lead the country into a political revolution. >> reporter: hoping to slow hillary clinton's momentum, sanders is looking for upsets in illinois, ohio and missouri today. but the vermont senator faces an uphill battle in the delegate-rich states of florida and north carolina where clinton holds a sizeable lead. >> i am asking for your support. i would be honored to receive it. >> reporter: millions of votes have already been cast here in the winner-take-all state of florida where on the republican

rubio 2-1 in polls. a trump win here will likely spell the end for rubio's campaign. >> we have to vote tomorrow. don't stay home. make sure no one stays home. >> reporter: and thrusts the billionaire candidate closer to locking up the republican nomination. >> he won't clinch but he'll have a commanding lead in delegates and be in a commanding position to get the rest that he needs. >> kasich cannot make america great again. can't do it. >> reporter: in the winner-take-all state of ohio, trump is neck and neck with john kasich, the popular governor. >> give me a vote so i can continue to run for president of the united states. >> reporter: in missouri, ted cruz is fighting trump for delegates. and in illinois, the latest cbs news battleground tracker poll has cruz within striking distance. and just to show you how big today is, there are more delegates up for grabs today than almost any other day on the primary calendar. for some of the campaigns, it will be on to states like arizona and utah next week.

license, he's identified as mohamed amin of alexandria, virginia. he gave himself up to kurdish forces yesterday, and he said the situation with isis is not good. he was carrying a large amount of cash, three cell phones and several forms of identification. >> don't take a picture! don't take a picture! >> outside, an address listed on the driver's license of the captured isis fighter, two men shouted and pushed reporters. at one point turning a garden hose on cameramen. the men never confirmed that the isis fighter was related to them. the pentagon confirms, though, that an isis commander known as omar the chechen is dead. he's described as isis's secretary of defense. the u.s. government had a longstanding $5 million bounty on his head. he survived a u.s. airstrike in syria earlier in march but has since died of his wounds. and starting today, russia will begin withdrawing most of

president vladimir putin made the surprise announcement yesterday, ending a 5 1/2-month air campaign that bolstered the syrian effort against rebel forces. putin and president obama talked by phone. also yesterday, u.n.-brokered peace talks to end the civil war resumed in geneva. police in toronto are trying if a stabbing at a military recruitment center might be terror related. a man walked into the center yesterday afternoon and attacked an armed forces member. others rushed to his aid, but a second military member was stabbed. the injuries are not life threatening. the suspect made statements that led police to look into a possible terror connection. three chicago police officers were wounded in a shootout with a drug suspect. the officers were investigating suspicious activity on the city's west side late yesterday. they approached a man and a woman who made a run for it. the man opened fire, hitting the officers. their injuries are not life

police shot and killed the suspect, and the woman was later captured. from the south to the midwest, folks are recovering from a rash of severe and in some cases deadly weather. yesterday a tornado touched down north of dayton, ohio. no injuries are reported, but several buildings were damaged. large hail and strong winds battered northern south carolina. wind gusts reached 70 miles per hour. and a state of disaster has been declared in nearly 20 texas counties hit by drenching rain and severe flooding. hundreds have been forced to evacuate. the investigation into an amtrak train that derailed in kansas is focusing on the condition of the rails. officials say the tracks had been inspected recently, but the engineer noticed something was wrong and slammed on the brakes. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: teams of investigators are now on the scene in southwestern kansas to try to determine what sent an amtrak train flying off the

>> need more personnel to respond to the train derailment three miles west of cimmaron. >> reporter: first responders raced to free passengers trapped inside when eight cars derailed. >> set a ladder up, and we'll start evacuating some of these people off the top. >> the engineer was quite vigilant and noticed there was something wrong with the tracks, put the train into emergency braking early. that was probably responsible for the train derailment not being any worse than it was. >> reporter: the amtrak southwest chief carrying 131 passengers and 14 crew members was traveling from los angeles heading for chicago. 25-year-old daniel serva was reading on board. he said he felt some turbulence that, quote, turned drastic. >> i exited and as soon as i opened the room door, there was a large burning smell. got outside and there was a lot of people -- i heard people crying for help, you know, looking for folks. so everyone was just kind of on both sides of the train, kind of looking for other people, family members. >> reporter: more than 30 people were taken to nearby hospitals.
