a maryland police officer is killed by friendly fire in a shootout that was recorded by the alleged gunman's brothers. and just how smart is your phone? a new study finds you might not want to turn to those popular voice assistants in the event of an emergency. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with politics and a day that could be pivotal for presidential hopefuls in both parties. five key states hold primaries today. for the republicans, winner-take-all contests in florida and ohio. may be the last chance to slow donald trump's march to the nomination. for the democrats, bernie sanders is hoping for another come-from-behind win in a big state to cast doubt on hillary clinton's candidacy. don champion is in miami. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie.

ahead, political futures are on the line for republican hopefuls like marco rubio and john kasich today. both tried making last stands in their home states yesterday. meantime on the democratic side, hillary clinton is trying to avoid any surprise upsets today. bernie sanders riled up supporters late last night in chicago, urging them to take him to victory. >> let us see this great state help lead the country into a political revolution. >> reporter: hoping to slow hillary clinton's momentum, sanders is looking for upsets in illinois, ohio and missouri today. but the vermont senator faces an uphill battle in the delegate-rich states of florida and north carolina where clinton holds a sizeable lead. >> i am asking for your support. i would be honored to receive it. >> reporter: millions of votes have already been cast here in the winner-take-all state of florida where on the republican

rubio 2-1 in polls. a trump win here will likely spell the end for rubio's campaign. >> we have to vote tomorrow. don't stay home. make sure no one stays home. >> reporter: and thrusts the billionaire candidate closer to locking up the republican nomination. >> he won't clinch but he'll have a commanding lead in delegates and be in a commanding position to get the rest that he needs. >> kasich cannot make america great again. can't do it. >> reporter: in the winner-take-all state of ohio, trump is neck and neck with john kasich, the popular governor. >> give me a vote so i can continue to run for president of the united states. >> reporter: in missouri, ted cruz is fighting trump for delegates. and in illinois, the latest cbs news battleground tracker poll has cruz within striking distance. and just to show you how big today is, there are more delegates up for grabs today than almost any other day on the primary calendar. for some of the campaigns, it will be on to states like arizona and utah next week.

you, don. well, former republican vice presidential nominee sarah palin made a surprise appearance at a trump rally in tampa. she lashed out at the press for the way protests at trump rallies have been covered. >> what we don't have time for is all that petty punk-ass little thuggery stuff that's been going on with these quote, unquote, protesters. >> palin had originally canceled her appearance after her husband, todd, was involved in a snowmobile accident in alaska. he's in serious condition with a collapsed lung, eight broken ribs and other injuries. well, coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk about the importance of today's primaries with cbs news political director and "face the nation" moderator john dickerson. an american who had been fighting with isis is in custody this morning after he surrendered in northern iraq.

license, he's identified as mohamed amin of alexandria, virginia. he gave himself up to kurdish forces yesterday, and he said the situation with isis is not good. he was carrying a large amount of cash, three cell phones and several forms of identification. >> don't take a picture! don't take a picture! >> outside, an address listed on the driver's license of the captured isis fighter, two men shouted and pushed reporters. at one point turning a garden hose on cameramen. the men never confirmed that the isis fighter was related to them. the pentagon confirms, though, that an isis commander known as omar the chechen is dead. he's described as isis's secretary of defense. the u.s. government had a longstanding $5 million bounty on his head. he survived a u.s. airstrike in syria earlier in march but has since died of his wounds. and starting today, russia will begin withdrawing most of

president vladimir putin made the surprise announcement yesterday, ending a 5 1/2-month air campaign that bolstered the syrian effort against rebel forces. putin and president obama talked by phone. also yesterday, u.n.-brokered peace talks to end the civil war resumed in geneva. police in toronto are trying if a stabbing at a military recruitment center might be terror related. a man walked into the center yesterday afternoon and attacked an armed forces member. others rushed to his aid, but a second military member was stabbed. the injuries are not life threatening. the suspect made statements that led police to look into a possible terror connection. three chicago police officers were wounded in a shootout with a drug suspect. the officers were investigating suspicious activity on the city's west side late yesterday. they approached a man and a woman who made a run for it. the man opened fire, hitting the officers. their injuries are not life

police shot and killed the suspect, and the woman was later captured. from the south to the midwest, folks are recovering from a rash of severe and in some cases deadly weather. yesterday a tornado touched down north of dayton, ohio. no injuries are reported, but several buildings were damaged. large hail and strong winds battered northern south carolina. wind gusts reached 70 miles per hour. and a state of disaster has been declared in nearly 20 texas counties hit by drenching rain and severe flooding. hundreds have been forced to evacuate. the investigation into an amtrak train that derailed in kansas is focusing on the condition of the rails. officials say the tracks had been inspected recently, but the engineer noticed something was wrong and slammed on the brakes. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: teams of investigators are now on the scene in southwestern kansas to try to determine what sent an amtrak train flying off the

>> need more personnel to respond to the train derailment three miles west of cimmaron. >> reporter: first responders raced to free passengers trapped inside when eight cars derailed. >> set a ladder up, and we'll start evacuating some of these people off the top. >> the engineer was quite vigilant and noticed there was something wrong with the tracks, put the train into emergency braking early. that was probably responsible for the train derailment not being any worse than it was. >> reporter: the amtrak southwest chief carrying 131 passengers and 14 crew members was traveling from los angeles heading for chicago. 25-year-old daniel serva was reading on board. he said he felt some turbulence that, quote, turned drastic. >> i exited and as soon as i opened the room door, there was a large burning smell. got outside and there was a lot of people -- i heard people crying for help, you know, looking for folks. so everyone was just kind of on both sides of the train, kind of looking for other people, family members. >> reporter: more than 30 people were taken to nearby hospitals.

are you loving your numbers? . by name. terrifying moments for firefighters battling flames at a maryland home. a wall fell on top of them. it happened early yesterday morning in germantown. eight firefighters were hurt, one seriously. the cause is undetermined. an uber driver blames an app for last month's kalamazoo shooting rampage, and the search for a supreme court nominee is narrowed to three. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports three federal circuit court judges are on president obama's

court. speculation is focusing on shri shrinavasa and paul watford. the announcement is expected this week. senate republicans say the next president should nominate the successor to the late antonin scalia. "the detroit free press" reports that the uber driver accused of killing six people blames the rampage on the ride-sharing app. jason dalton told police after the shootings in kalamazoo last month that his cell phone took over his mind. uber declined to comment. "usa today" reports that police gunfire killed an undercover officer during a shootout in maryland. colson arrived in an unmarked car during an ambush sunday at a landover police station. >> it was his actions that allowed officers to take a position where they could intervene and neutralize the threat. detective colson drew fire to

wounded. >> police say the gunman charged in the ambush expected to die in the shootout. two of his brothers are charged for recording the attack on video. "the hartford courant." reports that a former yale basketball player plans to sue the university. jack montague was expelled in his last semester. his lawyer calls it excessive. the university says he had nonconsentual sex with a female student in 2014. he denies it. and "the washington post" reports an nfl official's admission that football is connected to a degenerative brain disease. senior health and safety vp jeff miller acknowledged the link during a congressional hearing. it's the first such public admission by the league. still ahead, comedian jerry seinfeld drives off with a fortune. we will tell you what an auction of his classic car collection brought in. and you can thank drake later. the rapper's trash talking helped the raptors, but is it enough?

asking them about rape, suicide and other health issues. answers varied widely but included "i'm here for you" and "i don't know what that means." several didn't recognize any concern when a user said "i'm having a heart attack." it was quite a day here on wall street ahead of this week's federal reserve meeting. stocks finished mixe. the dow jones rose 15. the s&p 500 finished 2 points lower. and the nasdaq gained 1 point. a former volkswagen employee claims the german car company deleted documents and obstructed justice in the ongoing diesel emissions investigation. daniel donovan in a whistleblower lawsuit says volkswagen fired him after he refused to destroy evidence. volkswagen says his claim is without merit. the lodging website airbnb plans to give neighbors of its properties rented on its website a place to offer feedback. airbnb neighbors have complained

sporting events. the new feature will debut in weeks, first in japan. neighbors will be able to visit an online forum to comment and airbnb will take action when necessary. online retail giant amazon has filed a patent for its selfie pay. amazon shoppers would be able to authorize a purchase with a selfie photo instead of a password. in its patent filing, amazon says facial recognition technology is more secure than a password or a p.i.n. number. and there's a lot more room in jerry seinfeld's garage, but his wallet is pretty full, too. seinfeld auctioned 17 of his collectible cars for more than $22 million. he sold 15 porsches and two volkswagens. one, a 1955 porsche spider worth $5,335,000. when all was said and done, it appears the buyer got the bargain. the pre-auction estimates for all the cars listed was $10 million more than the final take. anne-marie.
