danielle nottingham is in uhall, california. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. ten mobile homes in this community were evacuated. we are northwest of los angeles. a fire burned here over the summer and it left the area barren. the perfect conditions for mudslides and as you can see behind me, crews are working right now to shore up that hillside to stop more debris, water, and mud from flowing through this neighborhood. parts of southern california already soaked by days of rain are bracing for more wet weather this morning, fueled by el nino. heavy rain and strong winds wednesday uprooted massive trees in the san diego area. >> the whole house shook. just for two minutes i hoped my roof didn't go off and me with it. >> reporter: launching tree limbs into homes. >> it literally came where i was sitting. if i didn't move, i don't know. it would definitely hurt. >> reporter: many drivers had to be rescued from their vehicles

the deluge saturated hillsides and triggering mudslides that spilled on to highways. >> you can drive along and drive right into it and, all of a sudden, you're up to your windows -- window shield here in mud. >> reporter: it has forced some you woulderly and disabled to leave their homes and more rain on for the week and beyond. >> number five on saturday and the sixth storm of the month will hit top of next week and leading to widespread rainfall totals for the entire state of california and nevada and arizona of at least one inch from the coastline from top-to-bottom and we are talking phoenix also getting an inch or two inches of rain. >> reporter: the system has already brought more than a foot of snow to the mountains, helping to recharge the region's snow pack. forecasters only expect the worse. officials says it take several

effects of a four-year drought. >> danielle nottingham, thank you. a series of earthquakes rattled oklahoma, but, so far, no significant damage or injuries are reported. the quakes hit last night within minutes of each other. most were centered in northwest oklahoma. the strongest was a magnitude 4.8. in all, at least ten quakes were recorded. they were felt as far north as wichita, kansas. economic tremor has engulfed the tiny stock market where trading was halted following a massive sell-off. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange to explain what is going on. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was the second day long trading suspension this week. this morning, stocks on the benchmark shanghai composite index nose-dived 7% half an hour after the market opened and triggered new regulations that shut down trading. the big picture issue is the chins economy, which is the second largest in the world, is just not performing well.

data was announced and the chinese bank devalued its currency. concerns over the chinese economy sent stocks in the u.s. to a two-month low yesterday. the dow suffered a triple digit loss for the second time in three days, losing 252 points. the s&p lost 26 points. the nasdaq gave up 55. when it's devalid it makes good sole in the u.s. dollar more expensive and that hurts demand in exports and elsewhere. china is a big export of oil and the slowing of economy has put a hole in that. >> see you later, jill. the powerball lottery jackpot will grow into the largest in american history after no one beat the odds last night. lottery official say no player picked all six numbers for the grand prize worth $500,000.

62, 63, and the powerball 17. . the estimated jackpot for saturday's drawing is a whopping $675 million! it could take weeks to confirm if north korea actually detonated a hydrogen bomb but there is growing doubt about the north korean claim. north korea said yesterday that it has successfully tested a miniaturized h-bomb but the white house says early analysis is not consistent with an h-bomb test and the south korean spy agency says the explosive yield was too small for a hydrogen bomb. the texas state trooper who arrested a woman during a contentious traffic stop last summer has been indicted and fired. he is charged with perjury. the woman later died in a jail cell. omar villafranca reports from dallas. >> get out of the car! i look light you up! >> wow. >> reporter: sandra bland's controversial arrest was caught on a police cruiser dash cam last summer.

>> reporter: a grand jury now says it didn't go down as texas state trooper bryan encinia claimed. he was indicted on friday with perjury. >> in his affidavit he stated he removed her from the vehicle to conduct -- to further conduct a safer traffic investigation and the gj found that statement to be false. >> reporter: bland was booked for assault and jailed and she hanged herself three days later while still incarcerated. bland's family says the grand jury didn't go far enough. >> why not charge him with false imprisonment and falsification of police record and documentation and why not charge him with battery and assault so we see san dah endure on that dash cam video i-you're about to break my wrist! >> reporter: if convicted of perjury, ensinia could face one

omar villafranca, cbs news, dallas. a dash cam recording captures a florida woman's final minutes after police forcely removed her from a hospital. the audio and video records barbara dawson in distress last month as an officer takes her from the hospital to a police cruiser and she collapses two feet from the car. nearly 18 minutes go by before dawson is readmitted to the hospital. she was pronounced dead an hour later. her family is now suing the police and the hospital. vice president joe biden says he regrets not running for president every day. biden announced last october that he wouldn't run because he ran out of time while his family mourned the death of his son beau. biden told a connecticut tv station that it was the right decision for his family, at the time. senator ted cruz responded to donald trump's claim concerning cruz's eligibility to be president. cruz was born in canada to an

most legal experts agree that makes cruz a natural born citizen as required by the constitution. but trump says that raises questions and potential problems for the gop. cruz says it's not an issue. >> look. as a legal mat, the question is quite straightforward and settled law that the child of a u.s. citizen borne abroad is a national born citizen. >> supreme court has ruled on the issue of who is or isn't a natural born citizen. trump suggests cruz go to court immediately to clear up the issue once and for all. . coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk to "face the nation" moderator john dickerson about cruz eligibility issue. president obama is certain to veto a bill that just landed on his desk. a measure to repeal most of the affordable care act. the house approved the bill yesterday. it had already passed the

police arrested three players of a basketball team. they are accused of raping a player on their team in an apparent hazing last month at ooltewah, tennessee. the teammate needed surgery. a jogger jewel thief has robbed half a dozen jewelry stores in less than a year. police say she and her accomplice hit a jewelry store on monday. they have hauled off more than $500,000 worth of jewels. "usa today" reports on a massive review planned by the pentagon of metals issued since 9/11. more than a hundred medals are being reconsidered for an upgrade for the highest award in battle and combat. the medal of honor. 17 medals have been awarded since 2001. revealing a plot line. on the cbs "moneywatch," chipotle's latest litigation. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. chipotle says it has been served with a federal pane as part of an investigation for a flrks norovirus. there was a separate norovirus outbreak at several chipotle stores. last month sales at their stores fell 30% rb . macy's is eliminating 4,000 jobs. part of restructuring plan. sales in november and december were down nearly 5%. macy's blames the unseasonably warm weather.
