surrounded by family and after, as you say, an 18-month battle with cancer. reflections about david bowie's career have been coming, not just from the music world but the political world. any appreciation of bowie's life any obituary has to deal with more than one character but with a series of rock and artistic characters he created over the course of his career, beginning probably with the one people find most familiar, the ziggy sar dust, major tom character which was one of his major hits, but his influence and his career through two or three more decades of rock and pop is just beginning to be appreciated now. the shocking news that he has died. >> indeed. truly shocking.

and no one expected this and very few people knew he was battling cancer. mark phillips in london, thank you. the cartel leader known as el chapo was captured friday after a dramatic manhunt. we are learning new details about actor sean penn's role in the apprehension of the world's most wanted drug lord. don champion reports. >> reporter: drug kingpin guzman is back in prison that tumbled out of six months ago but had he days may be numbered. mexican authorities have begun the process to send him to the united states. while most of his lawyers are exciting extradition, a news source told cbs news el chapo to be in the u.s. the next four for six weeks.

violent shoot-out with mexican greens. he had been on the june since july and always managing to stay one step ahead of investigators. his downfall may have been a meeting with actor sean penn in october. mexico's attorney said he wanted to make a deal about himself. actress kate del castillo brought penn and guzman together in a jungle and after years of denying he was in the drug trade, guzman told penn and "rolling stone" magazine, quote, i supply more her owen, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world. those words may come back to haunt guzman if he eventually faces trial in the u.s. don champion, cbs news, new york.

powerball jackpot has grown to the most in world history. it is an estimated $1.3 billion. brian webb reports on the growing excitement ahead of the next drawing. >> reporter: do you feel lucky? the largest lottery the world has ever seen is up for grabs this wednesday. >> i think i'm the one. i'm a lucky guy. i'm a lucky guy. >> reporter: no one matched all six powerball numbers after saturday's drawing, even though lottery official say about 75% of all possible number combinations were used. the odds of winning the $1.3 billion prize? 292 million to 1. powerball signs like this one are stuck at 999 million because they can't register into the billions. it's never been done before. the powerball has ballooned since its november 4th starting point of $40 million. >> get my ticket now. thanks to you. >> reporter: the winner can choose either annual payments over 29 years or a lump sum cash payment of $806 million, with a

she never met anyone that didn't like her. >> police have questioned olsen's boyfriend who is a local artist in florence but police say they have no suspect. a possible new threat. a tipster tells police the gunman behind the ambush of an officer in his car last week is part of a larger group of radicals. they may be planning more attacks. police and the fbi are investigating the credibility of that tip. southwest florida, residents are cleaning up this morning after a dangerous tornado roared through saturday evening. the twister damaged homes and scattered debris for miles in cape coral. it ripped down trees and power lines but no serious injuries. hollywood's biggest stars gathered last night for the golden globe awards. the globes are seen as the early indicator who might take home an oscar next month.
