crane collapsed on the streets of man tan. it came crashing down. >> cars parked at the curb and at least one car that was in the middle of the street were crushed. >> you heard the boom, and then, you know, you run to the windows and then you see a crane falling on the street. >> you heard the cars and you heard them clamp up. i heard the side of the building being scratched. >> the ground is littered with debris, broken glasses and bricks. inspectors here at the scene are looking into what caused collapse but also at buildings in the area that were struck by the crane as it fell to the ground. >> one of your concerns is going to be stabilized with the structures there, which, of course, with previous crane collapses we have we know that that was the case. >> witnesses say the crane had been in operation for a couple of weeks. the company that owns the equipment has not responded to

new york. >> new york was under a winter weather advisory this morning. the mayor said the person that died was sitting in a parked car. the crane was moved into a secure position when the winds topped 20 miles per hour. wet weather from earlier this week playing havoc with local roads. crews continue to clean up mudslide. all lanes in both directions cloes add 9:00 this morning. the city tweeted out about a half hour ago the eastbound lanes are open now. stay with local 12 news and local12.com the state auditor will follow the facts whenever they lead. he plans a special audit of the met metropolitan district. earlier this week they reported $850 million of spending with minimal oversight by city officials. there were allegations of

and 10:00 later this afternoon. you don't see a whole lot of clouds until we go to the west. these are the clouds moving in later this afternoon. so i think by 4:00, maybe 5:00 the way home from the evening commute we see partly cloudy skies move in. that's what we have on the forecast for today with temperatures up to the lower 40s. some areas with more sunshine make it to the middle 40s. i think low 40s is a good bet down to around 34 degrees by 9:00. in 15 minutes we talk about the warmer weather on the way for the weekend, a dry super bowl sunday but enjoy the dry weekend while it lasts because big changes are on the way next week. we're still watching snowshowers that could create slick travel. we'll talk more about that at 12 identify 18 john. thank you. love 12 news live at noon told you about plans for a new grocery store in an area that many consider a food oasis and today we hear more firsthand with those involved. that's where megan moore picks up the story.

local 12 news live a at no hillary clinton and bernie sanders head out on the campaign after a feisty democratic debate. on the gop side donald trump still leads the polls and the race in new hampshire appears to be for who comes in second. jeb bush is pulling out all of the stops for his victory including having his mom join him on the campaign trail. the manhunt for a missouri couple wanted for a violent cry spree comes to a violent end. they were caught up with last night after another alleged robbery in florida's panhandle. fitzgerald was killed in a shoot-out with officers and harper was injured. both have been on the run after committing six crimes in six days along the gulf coast. the couple's crime spree started sunday after they allegedly kidnapped a hotel clerk in tuscaloosa, alabama.

the internal revenue service is back in business now. the agency says it resumed processing tax returns last night after a computer issue wednesday. the irs said taxpayers should see little if any impact on tax rushes or refunds. president obama is calling for a $10 per barrel tax on oil paid for by oil companies to be investments. it would be applied to imported oil. crude pumped in the u.s. would not be taxed. the proposal is unlike lie to get a republican-controlled congress. they imported 7.4 million bears of oil per day. the dow jones is down 193

a tree fell on mike gold and maria cornell while they were in between live shots about damage from the weekend storm. mike gold suffered a badly broken leg, but he managed to call 911. >> so when the tree fell and after the initial silence and me catching my breath and finding marie and then trying to figure out what to do, that's when i grabbed my cell phone and started to make the call. >> mike calmed marie waiting for help. she was seriously hurt. several broken bones and a concussion that required six hours of surgery. according to their website, she's in the hospital recovering right now and mike is on crutches recovering at home. one of japan's most active volcanos erupted with a fiery mras that sent lava flowing down the slop. it's on a southern japanese island. the associated press reports japanese television showed an orange burst out of the side of the volcano with a

so far no reports of injuries. the mt's last major eruption was this past september. it's part of the pacific ring of fire of a series of more than 100 volcanos in the pacific. apparently it's still quite active. ifrments the coolest part about the video is the light you see and all the ash rubbing together creates an electric charge. >> i didn't know that. >> you get lightning in the ash plumes. >> that's very cool indeed. >> you can get cool photos off of that. >> i won't take pictures come monday or tuesday, but i just want to enjoy the weekend. >> you will enjoy the weekend. it's a nice, dry weekend, too. if you have any outdoor plans for football on sunday, looking pretty good. either. temperatures right now into the 30s across many locations. in fact right now at the airport we're 36, which is exactly our high temperature from yesterday. so we already met that high temperature right at the noon hour, and it's continuing to rise. we're not dealing with any rainfall right now.

hd and stays that way until early next week when we get some snowshowers in here. we talk more about that coming up. first, another look outside over downtown. not even a single cloud at least for now. we see some move in a little bit. 36 degrees at the international airport and wind out of the south-southeast around 8. that's going to help us warm up around 42 degrees on average. areas with more sunshine and certainly warmer than that in the middle 40s. above average, and average high temperature at 40 degrees. also notice the clouds start to increase i think right at 4:00 we'll start to see high, thin clouds move in and they'll gradually thicken up into the early evening hours. the temperature is dropping below freezing around 11:00 into midnight. we're making it back into the 20s once again tonight. so looking out towards the west, it's not that much cooler. in fact, these temperatures here in cincinnati, it's between 4 and as much as 10 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. so the warmer air is starting to settle in.

here are the clouds that i was talking about just off towards the west. in fact, on the far left side of the screen you see a little bit of snow moving into iowa. it looks like it's moving in our direction, but it's going to dry up. there's too much dry air out ahead of it, so that's something that we're not really watching. we get the clouds from the weekend. we still have lots of sunshine in between. the clouds move in around 5:00. we clear out overnight tonight and have spotty clouds here and there. that's this area of white pushing on through. then our attention turns to the west on sunday. you see this line of clouds moving into illinois. that's a front headed the way. look how the rain develops ahead of it late sunday night and especially monday morning. here it is by 9:00. i think monday morning we have a few rainshowers mixed with snowshowers, and eventually changing over to just plain snowshowers throughout much of the day on monday. you can already see some of those off towards iowa late sunday night. that's what's moving in next week and we will watch that throughout the weekend. too early to pinpoint exact

to warn you ahead of time. this is very difficult to pinpoint exact snowfall amounts because it's spotty snowshowers and not a widespread swath of snow. some neighborhoods get two, maybe three inches and others get a dusting. it's something we fine-tune throughout the weekend. nonetheless, light accumulations are possible, and that could mean some tricky travel especially with temperatures below freezing during the day on tuesday and especially on you can see the high temperatures there at the freezing mark. not close to the freezing mark on wednesday with still a few snowshowers around and then we start to dry out a little bit as we head into thursday, but temperatures still right at the 32-degree mark. john, it's really not that cold, 27 degrees for a high temperature this time of year is below average, but certainly not frigid. it could be worse. >> eve seen it much worse. thank you. you know, 44,000 students go to the university of cincinnati. safety is a big concern for
