the year's best films share the limelight, but it was a lack of diversity under the spotlight. killed on her first day on the job. a virginia community mourns the death of an officer who was sworn in the day before she was gunned down, and an arm sergeant is behind bars charged in her killing. and campaign 2016. new questions about donald trump and the kkk and marco rubio rips trump below the belt. >> you know what they say about men with small hands? good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the oscars, where an underdog won for best picture and the politically charged atmosphere just about overshadow the winners. host chris rock took no prisoners as he took on the uproar of the lack of diversity.

all of the major nominees were white. the newspaper genre spotlight was for best picture. chris martinez has our report. >> reporter: the film that shined a spotlight on the catholic priest sex abuse scandal won for best picture at the academy awards. the revenant won for best directing and leonardo decap re e nar onardo dicaprio won for best actor. >> i do not take the earth for granted. >> action film mad maximum fury road walked away with six production awards. chris rock hosted the night. his opening monologue all of the the white nominees. >> otherwise known as the white

>> reporter: he beat the drum every chance he got and the president of the academy echoed his sentiment. >> every facet of our industry should be as well. >> even here on the red carpet where oscar fashion is usually the biggest topic of discussion, diversity was front and center. >> i'm here to disappear and truly make it oscar so white is stupid to me. >> reporter: the night included visits from r 2 b 2 and lady gaga with a special presentation aimed at sexual violence. chris martinez, cbs news, hollywood. now to presidential politics. tomorrow is super tuesday with 11 states holding primaries or caucuses for the delegates. it takes 2,373 to clench the nomination. there are 595 republican delegates at stake.

needed to clench the nomination. and this morning, donald trump is taking a lot of heat for refusing to condemn the kkk. don champion has more. >> reporter: republican candidate donald trump campaigned 234 alabama earlier in the year and earlier on cnn and refused to -- >> i'm talking about david duke and the ku klux klan here. >> honestly, i don't know david duke. i don't believe i've ever met him. i'm pretty sure i've never met him and i don't know anything about him. >> is there no place in the conservative movement for david duke, the ku klux klan. >> we don't have anyplace for white supremacist in the united states of america. >> reporter: with more than 1 1,500 up for grabs the republicans are hitting key states in the south.

>> i said last night, america has never stopped beating great. our task is to make america whole. >> reporter: a new tracker poll shows clinton is ahead of bernie sanders in virginia, georgia, and texas. sanders admits he has work to do after losing south carolina's democratic primary. >> we did really, really badly with older african-american voters. i mean, we got decimated. >> reporter: trump is ahead in virginia and georgia but trails cruz in his home state of texas. 155 delegates are at stake there. trump's remarks yesterday about not knowing david duke don't jibe with what ed friday when asked about duke's endorsement. >> i didn't even know he endorsed me. david duke endorsed me? okay, all right. i disavow, all right. >> >> don champion here in new

florida senator marco rubio went after trump during a rally in virginia yesterday. >> he is always calling me little marco. i admit he is taller than me by 6'2" which i don't know why his hands are the size of someone like 52. have you seen his hands? they are like this. you know what they say about men with small hands. you can't trust them. >> coming up on "cbs this morning," we will discuss the weekend's events and what is coming up tomorrow with cbs news political director and "face the nation" moderator john dickerson reason an army sergeant charged in the murder of a virginia police officer is expected to be arraigned today. ronald hamilton is being held without bail. prosecutors say they will likely seek the death penalty. the officer he is charged with killing was on her first day on the job. brian webb reports.

candles and prayers were part of a memorial for officer ashley guindon killed on her first day on patrol with the prince william county police department in virginia. >> we will continue one step at a time in honor of ashley. it would discredit her memory and her self of service if we did anything but. >> officer down too. i don't know where the suspect is. >> reporter: guindon and two other officers were respondeding to a domestic deputy saturday night 30 miles outside of washington, d.c. police arrested 32-year-old ronald hamilton, an active duty staff sergeant assigned to the pentagon. they say he shot and killed his wife and then opened fire on the officers. >> it was very scary. i heard the shots, like four to five shots back-to-back. >> reporter: guindon a six-year marine reservist was sworn in on friday.

and another officer welcoming her with the words, be safe. brian webb, cbs news, washington, d.c. otto warmbier said he stole a banner because a church member back home wanted it as a trophy and offered him money. warmbier was arrested in january while on a tour in north korea. it's unclear what kind of charges he faces. an update on a teenager who survived a shooting last week in kalamazoo, michigan. her family says she has been taken off a ventilator and breathing on her own. at one point, it was believed she was dead but her mother said she squeezed her hand. coming up on the "morning news." red carpet mix-up. social media blows up over a

"the new york times" reports of scattered violations in the syrian cease-fire. the truce brokered by the u.s. and russia is in its third day. violence has drefed but the main opposition group says government troops have killed more than two dozen people since fighting was supposed to stop. the associated press reports the rising death toll after bombings in iraq. isis claimed responsibility for an attack in baghdad that killed 73 people and hurt 112. officials say a suicide bomber mingled with the crowd that gathered after an initial explosion and triggered a second blast. the guardian reports damming testimony about sex abuse about roman catholic priests in australia. during a hearing today in sydney, a church leader appeared on video from rome and said some accusations were ignored. >> too many of them certainly

[ laugh ] here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. it's another shortened cruise for the ship that was battered by an atlantic storm just two weeks ago. anthen of the seas is heading back to new jersey. the royal caribbean said it was hit by a squall and a norovirus outbreak. on the cbs "moneywatch" now, apple is reportedly downsizing the next iphone and conquering italy.

new announcement was announced this week. stocks here in wall street open today following their second strong week in a row. all three indices finished 1.5% higher or more. the dow gained 245 points, the s&p gained 30 points for the week, the nasdaq finished the week 85 points higher. at the box office, "dead pool" continues to dominate. starring ryan reynolds made another $31.5 million its third week out. the third highest grossing film behind "american sniper ". sguks tarbucks is opening in italy. the first will open in milan in 2014. italy is expected to be particularly tough.

italian life with many local shops competing to sell expresso and cappuccinos. reported that apple will call its new four-inch iphone the iphone se. the iphone se will look identical to the iphone 5 excepted for its curved edges. buzzfeed said it will be introduced march 21st. elon musk, the rocket's engines were firing when an on-board computer shut them down. the issue is rising temperatures and liquid oxygen fuel. two attempts were called off last week. no word on when spacex will try >> but you know they will. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange, thanks a lot, jill. coming up, dancing the night away.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. hollywood's biggest night wouldn't be quite as big without the after-parties. teri okita drew this far from unpleasant assignment. good morning, teri. >> reporter: still going on here in hollywood and there is a lot to celebrate, of course. spotlight won for best picture. as chris mentioned six oscars for mad max and revenant won for best director and best actor.

leonardo dicaprio last night who took home the best actor role in "the revenant." >> reporter: brie larson picked up a golden statue for her performance in "room." >> i feel really strong and excited to be holding this gold guy. >> reporter: when the curtain fell on the big show, the stars made their way to the governor's ball to toast to the night. >> we worked so hard on this film and to have it rewarded like this is really overwhelming. >> is hollywood racist? you're damn right hollywood is racist. >> reporter: comedian chris rock who pushed the envelope in addressing the oscars so white controversy. >> he is an amazing performer and person and it was -- it needed to happen. >> reporter: superstar elton john used his annual after-party to raise awareness for hiv and aids aids. >> the parties gives the celebrities a chance to meet for
