@ @ coming up on channel 3 news @today, no winner in last @night's powerball and the @jackpot has risen to over @we'll tell you when the next @big drawing will ug kingpin el chapo be @headed to the united ve more information @about his meeting with sean @penn when he was on the run. @snow is on the way. @>> good morning. @with the temperatures dropping @into the teens, this can easily @become your problem. @coming up, what to do to
9:01 am
@what to do if it happens to @you. @>> for the station that sees @the impossible, this is @you. @it's time to fall in love with @your home. @channel 3 news. @ take a look at this. @the downtown skyline is look like this for @very much longer. @we're tracking wintery weather. @thank you for joining this sunday morning. @betsy and olga, let's get to @you. @i get worried when you get so>> the cool thing is when @you're tracking something live, @it's like as you're seeing it n on my twitter feed. @olga has been watching me. @snow. @the big key we're still in rain
9:02 am
@very quickly this ah. @we're taking this all in stride @with the wind shift starting to @see more southwesterly winds @beginning to kick in. @the advisory is about an hour @away going to take us all @the way into this evening. @sustained winds, 30 miles per @hour. @gusts 50 miles per hour. @and then we bring in the lavisory later on this @afternoon and into the @overnight. @>> there's definitely a lot @happening. @look at the transition from @rain to snow that has just into our local @view. @you may see some of those @snowflakes flying. @i do want to show you this. @this is a picture from ledo. @this is 475 at u.s. 20. @this is a really popular @junction for people who are @headed up to detroit. @look at the snow on the ground. @it just started t 45 minutes ago. @this is going to be a very @quick, wet snow that falls. @as soon as it hits the wet @roads we have in place now,
9:03 am
@the travel conditions across @northern ohio will deteriorate @quickly once the snow starts i got this picture in from a @dear friend of mine who lives @in bowling up to a howling @wind. @winds have y they had this on the @ground. @you can see the transition as @it continues to move into our @viewing still has wet @roads, no snow falling, but it @is wet at this point. @here's the next 12 hours. @we're talking about ing very @quickly. @once the front comes through, @you're going to know it. @the temperatures are going to @drop quickly. @the wind will kick up big owflakes are starting to @fly. @we're looking at accumulation @across north ohio. @then lake effect starts to get @in the act.
9:04 am
@>> i'm still in denial. @i'm in denial this is going to @happen. @we'll have denial for another @two hours. @then it's reality. @>> well, as mentioned, temperatures are @going to take a drastic drive @w. how warm it's been, you @probably haven't given thought @to much pipes and winterizing @you've got a few hours. @>> good morning, cleveland plumbing @training facility. @they have these models set up @where they can work with the @plumbing in different rooms @from kitchen to in the basement, which @we're going to head to right @over here. @you will notice we have a @busted pipe. @earlier around 6:00, we froze @this pipe to simulate what @happens when a pipe a training @director.
9:05 am
@>> this case is an extreme @scenario that don't know if you have a @burst or not. @you want to make sure you turn @off the valve. @once the valve is off, you're ve no pressure and @that minimizes the damages. @they're easy to use, but you @want to @maintenance and valve tag and @know what this turns off. @try some of the fixtures @throughout the house and see @what this operates. @if you know you have a frozen @pipe in an room, @you can run downstairs and shut @that valve off and minimize any @damage that may be going on. @>> what are some of the steps @in someone hears this to go and do right now. @>> the valve -- number one is @knowing where your valves one out there could @take an hour and that's a lot @of damage.
9:06 am
@has a seal on @it doesn't allow cold air in. @>> okay. @coming up, we're going to talk @about hot water tanks. @>> thank you so much,. @>> did you buy tickets for last @night's $900 million powerball @jackpot? @you're going to work tomorrow. @there's no winner. @lottery officials say the early @estimates is $1.3 billion. @that's going to make a world @record sum. @winnings would come out to @about 106 million if a single @winner took it home as a lump @sum cash. @the jackpot began back on @november 7th and has since @rolled over 20 times. @it looks more likely that the @most wanted druglord in the @world may eventually be headed @to the u.s. gabe gutierrez @reports from mexico that @joaquin "el chapo" guzman's @desire to be on the big screen @may have led to his capture.
9:07 am
@the world paraded in front of @cameras overnight. @joaquin "el chapo" guzman, once @one of the most richest and @powerful man on the planet is @back where this all started, @the maximum security prison he @disappeared from months ago. @it was straight out of a @hollywood screen play. @but it was his own desire for @the spotlight that may have led @to his capture. @the mexican attorney general @revealing that the drug kingpin @was trying to make a movie @about himself and had his @people contact producers and @actors. @at least one source said their @movements were tracked as they @closed in on el chapo last @fall. @there was a fail aid tempt to @arrest him in october. @during an early morning raid @friday, there was a bloody @shootout. @five suspects killed, six @arrested, a mexican marine
9:08 am
@guns, grenade launchers were @seized. @but guzman and his men didn't @go peacefully. @he faces drug charges in six @american states. @a source within the mexican @attorney general's office plans @that it plans to fulfill a @request to extradite el chapo. @it could take months, but it @would be a major turning point @for relations. @the the last time he was @captured back in 2014, the @mexican government strongly @refused to send him across the @border. @this time there appears to be a @stark reversal. @>> gabe, thank you. @ last night after sean penn @posted an article to the @rolling stone magazine laying @out in great detail his meeting @with el chapo this fall stemmed @from a movie penn wanted to @make about his life. @he posted an interview with him @that explains what brought him @to the toppest of the largest

@ we have an update on the @canton k9 shot yesterday. @he was taken to the @veterinarian emergency clinic. @we're told he was shot multiple @times at a local grocery store. @officers say he was doing @better than they originally @thought and making small and @slow steps forward in his @progression. @ still ahead this morning. @ohio governor john kasich has @gained a big supporter for his @presidential campaign. @find out who's supporting him, @and the iowa caucuses are just @three weeks away. @find out who the new leaders

@thousands of dollars at the @event. @ the first presidential @campaign office for any @candidate in either party has @opened here in northeast ohio. @it's for democratic hopeful @bernie sanders or at least a @grass root group supporting his @candidacy. @it opened yesterday afternoon. @local democratic party leaders @among other supporters were on @hand for the grand opening @event. @>> bernie sanders is a man for @the people. @he's standing up for all @people. @he has personifying what he has @fought for his whole career, @standing up for the poor and @the middle class of this @country, and he's not ashamed @to do it. @>> we're told it's staffed by @volunteers and not by sanders @campaign itself. @it will be open to any sanders @events and meetings six days a @week. @ ohio governor john kasich @is picking up another key @endorsement. @rob portman announced his

@he said he chose kasich because @he can get things done. @he praised him balancing @federal budgets and reducing @state unemployment. @they served together in @congress back in the 1990s. @ we're now just over three @weeks until the iowa caucuses, @and a new poll shows donald @trump and ted cruz running neck @and neck in that state. @people there are preparing to @cast the first votes of the @primary season. @we're going to hear the latest @from chuck todd on meet the @press starting at 10:00 a.m. @ coming up, the browns' @coaching search continues to @take turns. @two candidates they interviewed @are off the board. @interviewed. @and the take a look at mercy. @we'll meet her and find out @what kind of home she'll be @best suited in. @first, let's check with betsy @who has big changes headed our @way. @>> we have crazy big changes @headed our way. @we have rain that goes to snow
9:14 am
9:15 am
@inherit headaches as well there @the winds are actually starting @to shift in our region right @now. @winter weather advisory not @kicking in just yet, but @shortly we're going to see @gusts up to about 20, 30 mile- @per-hour gusts, and, yes, the @lake effect bands are going to @start to kick in as well later @on this afternoon and through @the overnight period. @that's going the lead to some @messy conditions, particularly @as we head into tomorrow. @>> definitely could. @not only on roads but in your @backyards. @i've seen reports as well. @with the snow that's wet that's @falling, it then freezes on @trees. @there are power outages that @have been reported as well. @let's just stack another thing @on the thing to talk about @today. @we do have this big transition @that's going to be taking @place. @so far our roads are trouble @free in northern ohio. @that will be changing, however. @this is at northwest toledo at @475 and 20 interchange. @look at the snow on the road. @remember, when this snow falls, @it's a wet snow.
9:16 am
@it's wind driven snow. @when it falls on our wet roads, @it's going to turn to slush. @we'll have big slush problems. @if you have travel plans today. @i know there's a lot of kids @that are going back to school @today. @you may actually wait until @this band of snow goes by and @we'll see how things go. @of course every five seconds @this updates. @maybe the next picture that @comes in will show us @something. @we're just starting to see some @of the snowflakes flying at @port clinton. @the roads are going to be wet. @we'll skip on. @this is i-90. @this is strongsville. @are. @if kids are going to the mall @here, make sure they know that, @yes, while you're in the mall @it may be fun, but when you go @home, it could be very tricky. @as we go into the afternoon, @once we make this transition @over to snow, that snow is
9:17 am
@going to be very tricky to @drive on. @a lot of slush. @heavy snow, reduced @visibilities, and we have @conditions to pile on top of. @that as the temperatures are @dropping, now with bridges and @overpasses, they could also @start to ice up. @we definitely have big concerns @today. @here's a look at how things are @expected to go through the rest @of the afternoon. @we'll fall back into the 30s @and the 20s by evening. @this is probably what a lot of @roads and driveways are going @to be looking like later today. @let's take a look at the bigger @picture. @you can see where the @transition zone is. @we have an area of low pressure @that's moving through our area @right now. @that can kind of mess up things @just above the surface. @so that's why we're seeing all @the mixing showing up on the @radar. @for the most part, it's a clean @transition from the rain to @snow. @they still have snow falling in @toledo. @this is where we get into @thetic can i area into @mansfield where we're likely to @see the transition zone @continuing to move to the east. @it could be messy for a little @bit.
9:18 am
@that's when the roads start to @get tricky. @we've seen showers drying out @here east of town, but this @next band is going to swing @through as the area of low @pressure moves by. @we're expecting more rain east. @hour-by-hour forecast, once the @snow starts, it's going to get @nasty, especially on the @roadways. @not only do we have falling @temperatures. @remember, the winds are kicking @up at this time. @wind chills are going to be in @the teens and continue to fall. @northwest winds will build in. @that will give lake enhancement @of the snow going east of @cleveland and then lake effect @will continue as we get into @the night. @scattered showers elsewhere. @temperatures falling back into @the 20s by evening and teens as @we go into the overnight. @wind chills go into the single @digits, and by tomorrow @morning, the wind chills will @be down to zero. @one to three inches of snow @spread across northern ohio. @once you add in the lake @effect, things get a little
9:19 am
@that's where we have a lake @snow advisory. @temperatures in the 40s today. @we'll fall back into the 20s @for your day on monday. @your window nation 7-day @forecast has a clipper system @with 1-4-inches of snow coming @through on tuesday. @very cold temperatures @wednesday. @maureen, by the end of the @week, hopefully we'll be able @to put this first big blast of @winter behind us. @>> all right. @betsy, thanks so much. @maybe you're looking to add to @your family for 2016. @a pet adoption might be exactly @what you need. @joining me now is hannah ross @smith. @thank you for being with us. @>> we have mercy, the dog. @tell me a lit bit about mercy. @>> this is mercy. @she's five years old. @she's been with the rescue for @a couple of years. @she is crate trained, potty @trained, would make an awesome @therapy dog or service dog. @she's real calm and mellow but @would definitely love to play. @great with kids. @great with adults. @she's just an all around @awesome dog.
9:20 am
@what type of family do you see @her with? @>> i mean, she loves all kinds @of kids. @she lives with a couple kids, @10-12. @anyone who can handle not @getting knocked over by her @tail. @she definitely has a wiggle @tail. @she's been very calm since @she's been in here. @>> this is her. @>> what are her personality @traits that pop out compared to @other dogs? @>> this is her. @i mean, she is just -- she @loves to cuddle on the couch. @she'll definitely get up and @play with you if you want her @to. @she loves a good couch and a @good snuggle. @>> tell me about your rescue @organization. @>> mercy store, we try to focus @on pit bulls. @we're a positive reinforcement @for training. @it's very treat based. @we do clicker training. @it's all positive reinforcement
9:21 am
@'s no adverse training. @so it really shows a big @difference in training. @>> she has been so well-behaved @since she's been here. @i saw you bust out the treats, @and she's been great. @mercy, you can go to the @website right there. @there you go. @okay. @thank you so much. @>> thank you. @ yesterday the nfl playoffs @kicked off, and it all started @in the lonestar state. @it was the chiefs at the @texans. @nile davis started with a 106- @yard kickoff return for a @touchdown. @the chiefs never looked back. @they win their first playoff @game in 22 years. @former browns quarterback brian @hoyer had a rough game with @four interceptions. @30-0 was the final score. @kansas city faces new england @next weekend. @and it was steelers versus @bengals. @they pulled ahead with this @circus catch, making it 15-0
9:22 am
@came back with just under 2 to @play. @steelers win 18-16, and they @take on denver next sunday. @now we're going to send it over @to dave for the latest on the @browns' head coach search. @hi, dave. @>> hi, everyone. @good morning. @today is day number five of the @browns' coaching search. @yesterday would have been day @number 4 and yesterday we @crossed a name off the list and @they interviewed another @candidate. @that interview took place @yesterday when they met with @patriots coordinator matt @patricia. @new england had one of the @league's best ds under his @league, and the feeling weeks @ago in new england was he would @finally get a shot to be a head @coach or at least get some @interviews. @he's been with new england @since 2004. @he's 41 and really an @intelligent guy. @you wonder if analytics plays a
9:23 am
@cross adam gates off the list. @the browns interviewed him @right out of the gate. @two days later he's hired as @the miamis head coach. @he'll have a final say over the @53-man roster, something he @would not have gotten with the @browns. @he's the youngest head coach in @the nfl. @>> it's an accelerated growth. @this business, you know, age is @only a number, but you get @older really quick. @every week is a growing @experience. @you learn. @i feel like the last three @for this moment. @>> well, it looks like jerome @henderson can be taken off the @browns' list as well. @he'll join gates in miami to be @his db coach. @the browns interviewed @henderson a few daysing that. @mcdermott. @he's also meeting with tampa @bay. @remember, the panthers have a @playoff game coming up next @weekend.
9:24 am
@last night l interview with the @browns as well. @but also with the 49ers, @they're hot ob -- on him. @really interested to see where @he ends up. @he was a hot coach with the @raiders. @doug morrell interviewed @yesterday. @the jags' assistant and former @bills assistant coach will meet @with the giants. @it's their fifth interview. @how about this one? @the eagles have requested @permission to interview tom @coughlin for their coaching @vacancy. @they must receive permission @from new york because coughlin @resigned with one year on his @contract. @he faced the eagles for 12 @years as the giants head coach. @could havelin is tom coughlin @hinted he may not be through @coaching. @ it's the seahawks and the @vikings.
9:25 am
@4 degrees. @that's the scheduled @temperature, what they're @predicting in minnesota today. @one. @couple of notes from yesterday. @college basketball, cleveland @state is a loser falling at @home to milwaukee. @and the cavs back in action @coming up today as they are in @philadelphia, and they will try @to win another one on the road. @i'm dave chudowsky. @have a great sunday, everybody. @>> all right. @dave, thanks so much. @we're tracking a wintery mix. @it's headed our way any minute @now. @betsy and olga will track this. @also the frigid temperatures @coming our way. @hi, alyssa. @>> reporter: hi, maureen. @we just talked about pipes and @how to prevent breaks.
9:26 am
@ @welcome back. @there's a live look downtown @cleveland. @you can hear that rain falling @on the camera. @that is going to be turning to @snow. @thanks so much for being with @morning. @we're tracking this wintery mix @coming into our area. @we want to get over to betsy @kling and olga breeze. @team coverage this morning. @>> that's right. @it's 46 degrees with rain @olga? @>> the rain is coming down. @temperatures are still mild. @there's a change on the way. @in fact, west of us, they're
9:27 am
@they're expected to be close to @30 miles per hour, gusts near @50 miles per hour. @and then late in the day, @around 2:00, 3:00, we'll start @to see the lake effect kick in @mainly north and east. @betsy? @>> so we have advisories to @talk about. @right now it's rain coming @down. @look at the snow coming down in @the western part of the state. @area of low pressure is @swirling across northeast ohio. @and that's kind of mixing @things up a little bit on the @initial transition zone. @we have a lot of cold air that @will wrap in on the bottom of @that as well. @toledo, still seeing snow. @a lot of slowdowns, so if you @still have places to go, i @would wait until the big band @of snow moves through. @that will be mid-to-late @afternoon. @then do your traveling because @once we get this in here, it @could get really nasty. @if you're going eastbound, get @on the road and get out because @it does look like once this @snow starts, it could be a @little tricky. @especially headed down 77, @taking the kids back to school
9:28 am
@we still have rain in @cleveland. @more rain to come in akron and @canton and wooster and @mansfield. @look at where the line is. @the wind is starting to pick up @here. @it will be interesting to hear @when the snowflakes start to @fly because shell osu3 says @she's in mileland. @that's south of sandusky and @huron. @south of sandusky in monroe @monroeville, difficult to see @but snow just started in @monroeville. @you can even see some of the @snowflake there is falling. @so it's going to be a wet snow @that falls. @it's going to stick @immediately, and it's going to @reduce visibility as well. @we've been keeping an eye on @this. @not seeing touch in the way of @accumulation on the roadside, @you can i see how that @visibility is reduced as those @big snowflakes come through. @here's what you need to know @for today. @winds kick up, temperatures
9:29 am
@snow piles up 1-3-inches across @the area. @we'll have additional lake @effect tonight. @areas east of cleveland, we'll @talk about it in your full @forecast in just a little bit. @>> thanks so much. @this drastic drop in @temperature we're about to @experience could also have @major effects on your home. @you're going to have to think @back to last winter to remember @all of it, but alyssa raymond @is joining us with all the @reminders that the @professionals have. @good morning, alyssa. @>> reporter: good morning. @we talked about the frozen @pipes. @now we're on the hot water @tanks. @you've been here giving me tips @all morning. @jason shank is a train we are @the cleveland plumbing @industry. @if i walk down to my basement, @i'm looking at my hot water @tank, what are concerns that @are going to raise red flags? @>> a lot of time people will @notice water on the floor. @this is a little drip. @if you turn autoyour water to @the tank and you still have a
9:30 am
@be a leak at the bottom of the @tank, and that is cause for @alarm, but other tips, you want @to make sure you turn off your @valves to outside fixtures, @seal up holes. @if you expect anything @freezing, turn off the valves @preemptively. @>> we've talked about the @demand for plumbing jobs in our @area because of the rnc. @what type of demand and why is @it a career that you would @suggest people get into? @>> it's a very good career. @somebody that likes to work @hands on. @you can do plumbing service @like we talked about today or @newer rehab construction. @we have an aging workforce. @we're looking for new people to @come in and learn the trade for @free and earn while they learn @and become the next journeymen @for the future. @>> this is a link to their
9:31 am
9:32 am
@if you are a single guy looking @for love, you may consider @buying a dog. @a new study finds men who own @dogs are more attractive. @they included pet info in their @profiles. @61% of women, a majority of @them said owning a pet makes @someone more attractive. @taking the kids to chick-fil-a @just got a little less @stressful. @a concept called mom's valet or @parent's valet is being @implemented. @it lets parents order at the @drive through with the children @in the car. @after they order, they go @inside where an employee will @have a table and high chairs @ready as well as food and @condiments on the table. @so you don't have to worry @about struggling with the high @chairs and going up to order. @sounds good to me. @ all right. @we have wintery weather on the @way. @both betsy and olga are keeping
9:33 am
@>> the latest, we're still in @for it, unfortunately. @the transition is taking place @out to the west. @storm rangers said the winds @started gusting in lorain @county. @>> and it's going to be more of @the same, especially as we go @through the next couple of @hours. @right now we're looking at a @winter weather advisory a that @kicks in at 10:00 and is going @to run all evening long. @yes, the winds will be @sustained near 30 miles per @hour, but we'll see those gusts @closer to 50. @then overnight tonight, we @bring in the lake effect. @another advisory is definitely @going to keep things moving as @we head into the overnight. @>> certainly keeping it @interesting, if nothing else. @remember, the winds along with @the snow that's going to be @freezing up, we could have some @power outages later today. @that will be something to keep @an eye on. @i've been watching the wet @roads. @no big slowdowns, no accidents @to report as of now, but that @transition is coming in. @and that is starting to freeze @some things up.
9:34 am
@so u.s. 2, i believe, and you @can see we're starting to see @way over here on the side, see @the snow starting to @accumulate. @we've been keeping a close eye @on this. @look at the visibility, how @reduced that is. @they're in the mix right now. @the rain and snow taking place @right now. @if you have travel plans today, @this afternoon, it is going to @be a sloppy, nasty mess. @as this snow falls, it's @falling onto wet roads. @that means slush, temperatures @dropping, that's going to @freeze the slush, and it's @going to be windy. @if you have travel plans, i @heard from folks that may have @to take the kids back to @college or the kids have to @drive, which is more worrisome @for parents. @keep them home for a little @while. @once this initial band of snow @moves through, then send them @on their merry way with the @words of caution. @bridges and overpasses is where @we're going to have our worst @problems. @temperatures fading back into
9:35 am
@scattered snow will be @continuing. @you can see the band of heavy @snow that's on the back side. @as i mentioned, we do have rain @initially, so there's heavy @rain just lining up on i71. @but that transition zone is @moving east at a pretty @persistent pace. @showers to the southeast of @cleveland. @that includes akron and canton. @you can see the rain will be @sweeping through as we head @through the next couple of @hours before the transition. @olga mentioned the wind. @37 mile-per-hour gusts in @elyria. @where you see the bright @colors, that's where the @gustiest wind is. @that's coming east as well. @once the wind gusts, the @temperatures start to drop. @when the temperatures drop, we @get the rain to snow. @so we have the temperatures @that have already fallen back @into the 30s west of cleveland. @by 1:00 p.m. @we have the band of heavy snow @coming through. @this is going to put an
9:36 am
@we'll have a total of 1-3 @today. @you can see below freezing @quickly. @we'll have scattered snow @through much of ohio. @lake effect starts to kick in @as we head into the afternoon @and evening. @temperatures continue to fall @back into the 20s. @look at these wind chills down @into the single digits by this @evening. @as we continue to have periodic @lake effect snow. @that snow will really start to @aim east as we go through the @overnight hours tonight. @see the band coming in. @look at where these @temperatures go. @farther to the south and the @wind chill down around zero to @start the day. @it's going to be one of those @days where farther south we see @peaks of sun tomorrow and lake @effect continues to the east. @generally speaking, 1-3 inches @from this band of snow that's @going to come through. @then we add the lake effect in. @you can see things start to get @a little tricky out to the @east. @tomorrow morning's commute @could be shady as we get 3-6 @inches piling up in the snow @belt areas. @that's why the snow advisory @starts today and goes through @noon on monday.
9:37 am
@day for us, by the way. @the lake snow starts to wind @down and you continue the cold @with another clipper system, @another 1-4 inches across @northern ohio. @that's another equal @opportunity storm. @we'll start up with 20s on @tuesday morning. @we'll not make it out of the @teens on wednesday with some @lake effect snow lingering. @thursday, a little snow across @the area again. @couple inches out of that, @finally late week into the @weekend, we start to make the @turn. @all in all, what an incredible @day this is going to be. @it's just waiting. @>> where is my polar vortex @coat? @i don't know where i put it. @it's somewhere in the closet. @>> i only brought the light @jacket this morning. @>> you have a coat, olga? @>> right out of the garage and @into the building. @>> up next, seven minutes with @russ mitchell. @you may want to bring the

@job. @>> what kind of guy was he, do @you say? @>> dr. king was always focused @on the movement. @he was the kind of man who @always reached down for the @people who were downtrodden, @but he was focused always on @his purpose of the civil rights @movement, not only in @montgomery, but throughout the @united states. @>> i see. @what did your job entail, @exactly. @>> my job entailed -- first i @had to pick up mrs. king and @her two children. @they only had two children at @the time. @i would take them to church and @double back to the university, @pick up students who wanted to @go to the dexter avenue baptist @church. @and from there, i would go in @the community and pick up @senior citizens and get them @there, all by a quarter to @11:00. @>> and you had $6 a week for @doing this? @>> $6 a week paid in silver @coins.
9:42 am
@just for no reason. @>> he would give me a 10 or 20 @when he and i would go on extra @trips throughout alabama. @usually this, russ, would @happen after church services. @he would have speaking @engagements in alabama, @greensboro, marion, selma, @talladega, tuscaloosa. @areas in and around montgomery. @those locals were one hour to @two hours away from montgomery. @>> i see. @>> now, at this point, he was @already famous, the montgomery @boy had happened three years @before that. @he was a nationally known @figure. @at that point was his safety a @concern at all? @>> no. @no. @his safety was not a concern at @the time because the atmosphere @in montgomery and alabama had @decreased.
9:43 am
@he was not the type of person @who was drawing the kind of @negative atmosphere, but he was @always conscious of his safety. @but it was not an overall issue @at the time. @>> he would always ride in the @front seat. @>> always ride in the front @seat because he never wanted to @give the impression that he was @being chauffeured. @i remember he had a '54 @pontiac. @the car began to give us @trouble. @i told him we needed a new car. @he said, no, i will not buy @another car or a new car right @after the montgomery bus @because i do not want to be @listed that i have bought a new @car immediately after this @boycott. @>> he was aware that a lot of @people watch him and pay @attention to what he was doing. @>> i understand there was a @bump in the road, so to speak.
9:44 am
@>> yes, i had the car. @my chore that day was to drop @my passengers off and then go @up. @and he would either drive me to @the campus or i would drive him @home, or we would go on @wherever we had to go, but i @fell asleep, and i did not pick @him up. @dormitory door. @i opened the door and dr. king @is standing there. @he said, mr. bozeman, may i @have my keys, please is this. @>> he took the key, walked away @and never said another word. @>> really? @>> all that week i said, i know @he's going the fire me when i @go up sunday morning and pick @up the car. @he never mentioned it again. @i know he was upset, though. @>> but he never said anything. @>> never said anything. @i saw him upset twice. @>> the family moved to atlanta @in 1960 and the job went away. @you graduated from college.
9:45 am
@>> yes, i did, a couple of @times. @he came back to cleveland once @when i had moved here. @i heard him speak down at the @old hotel, i can't remember the @name. @and then he and i chatted about @old times, and he took me with @him on a private dinner over on @the park and i saw him when he @came back through cleveland the @second time. @>> and you saw mrs. king? @>> yes. @>> where were you on april 4th @april 4th, 1968? @better question is what went @that happened? @>> i was coming from the @empire, jr. high school, and i @heard the announcement. @i pulled to the side, and i @just started crying. @tears just flowed out of my
9:46 am
@and the reason was that i knew @this man on a personal basis. @now he has gone. @he has been taken away from @society in a needless death. @and that hurt me. @>> sure. @of course. @as someone who knew him and @spent time with him -- we have @1:15. @what do you think he would @think about race relations in @this country today? @>> i think he would be @disappointed because i think @that he -- there are four @themes that i have researched @dr. king, that he believed in. @love, hope, forgiveness, and @prophesy. @and when you put those @ingredients together, i think @that he thought that society @would be far more advanced as @far as social relation and race @relation than they are today. @and i think that he would be

@progress has stymied now. @the progress for race relation @in america has come to a @plateau. @we need someone to push it @ahead. @>> 15 seconds left. @i've seen you speak to groups. @i've seen your eyes light up @when you talk to them, very @quickly, what do you get when @you speak to them? @>> i get a feeling that i am @imparting something about dr. @king that will help the people @along the the way, especially @young people. @i want them to always remember @him as more of a hero and more @than i have a dream speech. @>> clarence bozeman, again, @you're a treasure. @it is great to meet you. @friend. @>> i'm glad to be your friend. @>> thank you. @>> thank you ! and that is all @for this week. @we'll see you next monday on @the news and back here next
