after he releasing a new album on his birthday. tributes are pouring in including here in los angeles where fans placed candles on bowie's star on the walk of fame. let's go to nbc's bill neely. he's in london. he's got this story this morning. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. david bowie dead at 69, hard to believe. the tributes being paid here in brickston where he was born, messages and flowers, the face of ziggy stardust, south london, of course, where david bowie played his first gigs in pubs and clubs, a legend now lost to the world. like so much in his life and career, the death of david bowie is surprising, shocking. his facebook page announcing he died peacefully surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. his son duncan jones tweeting

what did david bowie do for this >> well, quite simply he was one of rock's first self-conscious artists. he looked at everything he did as art, the way he way he lived his life, his sexuality. he pushed boundaries all the time, and uniquely he was an inspiration to people in the he '80s, in the '90s constantly changes. "changes" is one of his best known songs. it's a theme song for him,ea of shifting, of constantly being on the move and embracing all sorts of different sounds, rock 'n' roll, dance music, these things. we have david bow toe thank for that. >> well, i was going to say one measure of somebody's success and impact is how young artists artists have taken what he did and taken it further. are there people out there in music today or even in the last few decades who you say, oh, david bowie did that >> yes.
