9:40 am
good morning. welcome to seven minutes. our guest today is one of the most powerful business people in cleveland, a banking leader who can be found in the boardroom, his community, and this may surprise you, on stage as well. mark is chairman and ceo of third federal savings and loan and he joins us now. thank you for having us today. >> it's my pleasure. thank you for the introduction. >> the stage stuff later. that should be fun. your village headquarters. this is a bank your family started back in 1938. >> yes. >> what is the biggest challenge of being in that seat today? >> well, there's a lot of history involved and history with the community and it's a big responsibility from a family perspective because the history of my family goes way, way back in this neighborhood
9:41 am
family first settled here and actually grandfather was responseable for a teamster group. and in their free time, they would put houses on stilts and dig the basements by hand. and so literally, my family goes way back and we're responsible for the foundation of this neighborhood. >> that's something. from a chairman point of view, the way the banking industry has changed over the year, what's a challenge that you have? >> well, he was always fighting regulators from the beginning of time with his career but the regulators have been very, very interesting in the last few years. of course, a lot has changed. the image of the bank and the banking community and the bankers hasn't been good in the public's eye. so we have worked hard to keep our image really right there in the community with our
9:42 am
the good work that we do in the communities. >> and this bank went public in 2007. there's a great picture and it's also behind you in times square on that day. i was going to ask you, what do you remember about that day? >> it was exciting. it was fun. and it was nice to represent the family in such a momentous occasion. we raised a billion dollars in capital. it was exhilarating and i was humbled by the response of the community to buy the stock and to be able to represent the family and all of third federal. >> any pitfalls in -- how many risk is there in taking a company public like this? >> well, really not that much because we didn't sell the whole company. we only sold 30%. so 70% is still locked up in a controlling position with the holding company but it was nice to allow the community to buy stock in third federal because again, the community was a big reason why third federal was
9:43 am
>> and as we sit here considering the epicenter of the foreclosure crisis, let's go before the bubble burst. and you're look around and seeing these other mortgage lenders, some of them at the time well respected, giving the loans, the risky sub prime loans and business is going suffering. was there a point where you something? maybe we should do something they're doing? >> sure. all the time. >> what kept you from doing that? >> well, we run our company on a set of values, love, commitment, tradition of another with respect. and when we design the product, we make decisions based on those values and we couldn't figure out how we could consciously make loans based on that criteria in the community and allow the customers to take the products when we knew if anything changed in their economic situation or in the economy in general that
9:44 am
>> because you saw these other company, again seemingly doing so well, how much pressure was it on you as the first in that seat? >> well, i think we alienor thing to do. as a management team. and so we never really gave it a second thought although to watch the market share go from 25% down to single digits was right here. >> could it happen again? could the foreclosure crisis happen again with the regulation that's out there? with all the eye balls on what's happening now? >> well, it could but the likelihood is probably pretty slim. and the reason for that being is most of the bad guys are out of the industry right now. and just a good guys that are left. and we lend with a conscious. >> why do you think you survived and came out and didn't take any tarp money? >> no, we didn't. there's a few reasons. my father was part of a company that during the depression closed the doors and closed the doors for good.
9:45 am
federal, he wanted to make sure that third federal was well capitalized and had more capital than less. and we have taken that premise and we have just expand on it and always tried to develop our company and the balance sheets so we're depression proof. and that's what happened in the housing industry. we basically had a depression in housing. the economists and folks in washington will call it a recession but when the value of your property falls 20, 30, even up to 50%, that's a depression. >> and this bank has been instrumental in the village. >> well, we have accomplished a lot that still has a long way to go. we have an assisted living housing across the street. and we helped central catholic get organized and improve their school facilities and built a stadium. and we have housing that's going on here in trail side where we have 10 homes that
9:46 am
so there's a lot going on. we have some great partners, four cities is part of our partnership. so there's a lot of good people involved here but it takes a little bit of time to get this going. and some people say, well, why waste your time? and it reminds me of the star fish story where there's a kid on the beach throwing star fish back after a big storm. and there's thousands on the beach. and a guy walks up and says, you know, why are you throwing the star fish back in? it's not going to make a difference. and he picks up one and says, it will make a difference to this one. and he throws it back. so there are small things we're doing to try to make a difference in the community. >> something a lot of people may not know about you, you're this big rock 'n' roll band. you're in a band. you sing and play key boards. >> that's right.
9:47 am
