@ @ right now at 6:00, lake @effect snow continues to batter @the snow belt dropping more than @a fourth of snow and another @foot of snow is expected to pile @up again this morning. @we have our live team of @reporters on the roads tracking @the conditions for you. @ and we've got bad roads, but @also the bitter cold @temperatures, and right now, @here at the station, we have @more than 130 ialerts, school @closings, and delays because of @the snow and the cold. @right now. @here's holly.
6:01 am
@good morning to you. @the closings continue to come in @because of the lake-effect snow @to the east and the frigid @weather that we continue to deal @with. @we've got a really heavy lake @effect snow band that's been @persistent. @i mean, this thing hasn't really @budged from cleveland east side @into county. @southern lake county. @so these are places like @mayfield, south euclid, richmond @heights, euclid, willaby, east @lake, sharden, chagrin falls. @all those schools are closed @today. @mentor, you're closed, as well. @john mentioned it shths ed -- i @mean, the @list is growing. @probably best to look at @wkyc.com for the complete list. @the southern part of cuyahoga @county, around parma, for @example, it's a little bit @lighter. @we are not seeing as much snow. @along the lakeshore we get a few @breaks, but those of you that @are a little bit further inland @are really dealing with some @moderate to heavy snow. @you are all dealing with the
6:02 am
@in addition to these lake effect @snow warnings to the east, @everybody is under windchill @advisories, and right now, @current feel-like temperatures @are anywhere from, say, zero to @12 below. @so on top of the snow coming @down to the east, that's another @big factor for today. @time is 6:02. @we're going to check your drive, @and we do have an accident to @report on madison road. @this is just north of kinsman @road. @so there's the overview, and as @we do zoom in, the problem spot @continues to be 271. @this area that, you know, @mernls -- mernls -- merges to @271, h 80, 411, that's where @it's going to be slowdowns as @you enter. @you better allow plenty of time. @john and lena, we are going to @continue to check the roads. @let us know, you know, on @twitter, too, what you are @waking up to, what your
6:03 am
@east. @>> all right. @thank you, holly. @ now, let's get you the live @pictures of all this. @we continue our team coverage of @the lake effect snow blasting @the snow belt. @>> take a look at this map. @our crews are on the roads @tracking conditions and looking @at the map here. @you can see exactly where they @are traveling. @right now, tiffany is live on @the east side. @tiffany, where exactly are you @and -- looking pretty good where @you are. @really a difference. @sharden square. @you saw the roads snow covered. @painsville area. @you could see the roads look @pretty good here. @very solid here. @let me just tell you this: i @just got some information from @transportation. @they have 14 crews out right @now, and even for private @video of them. @they have been working just
6:04 am
@all the snow off the parking @lots, off the sidewalks, and @businesses, but they, too, are @one driver told us. @>> it's one of the hardest @things you can do, the stress @levels, traffic, people not @paying attention. @ @>> that is @>> the traffic as it gets closer @to 6:00, past 6:00, ask closer @to 7:00, of course, we are going @to see traffic pick up. @you can see the westbound @traffic there on the left-hand @side of your screen chl we are @going to be out here. @we are just traveling along @showing you what the conditions @are like keeping you updated. @so far so good. @if you are traveling east in @geauga county past painsville, @looks good here. @>> thanks. @lake-effect snow continues to @hit the east side this morning @creating another mess of commute @for some folks this morning. @will has been out on the roads @in lake county. @he joins us now.
6:05 am
@>> well, you could see pavement @here off and on, but the @question is right now is what's @underneath of it because it @seems to be a layer of ice. @very, very, very slick. @we feel this truck slipping and @sliding at different portions @here back and forth. @now, other times here on route @2, we've been at places where @you can't really see the road @below it, but everyone can feel @the slickness of the road. @that's why traffic is backed up @here a little bit. @everybody taking it very, very @slowly here, just under 30. @we are going to head out toward @east lake here. @the question is now is can you @actually get out of your @driveway because some people are @going to wake up, they are going @to go out and have a lot of @snow. @here's some tips if you are @having trouble getting out of @your driveway this morning. @>> first and fore mes, you want @to make sure your driveway is @shovelled, especially the area @around your tires. @lay down salt and then get in @your car. @once everything is warmed up, @you want to start trying to pull @out. @make sure you don't spin your @tires. @that'll make everything worse. @you'll possible damage your @vehicle, as well. @you want to put your car in the @lowest gear possible, try to @pull forward, and then go in @reverse quickly, rock back and
6:06 am
@if that doesn't work, if your @car is a front-wheel drive @vehicle, you can try turning the @wheel back and forth. @you can try using maybe some @kitty litter, sawdust, or sand. @putting it under your tires @trying to get traction. @stuff, take your floor mats out @of the vehicle, put them @get traction that way to get out @of the driveway. @last but not least, all else @fails, give us a call here, and @we'll come get you out. @>> so that's what you need to do @to get out of your driveway. @once you get out, please be @careful out there. @as i said, very, very slick. @you could see here on road, @looks like a rear-ended accident @here, lena. @so it is slick. @we can feel it in this truck. @this truck has a lot of weight @to it so on a much-lighter @vehicle, you are probably going @to feel it even more so there's @that layer of ice, as we @mentioned the temperatures all @morning long. @that's going to play a factor @underneath this sheet of snow. @we'll continue to be out here @and check on things for you @throughout the morning chl we'll @check in here later.
6:07 am
@ because of the weather, many @county buildings in cuyahoga @county will open late this @morning. @so county officials say all @non-essential personnel should @not report to work until 9 a.m. @one exception, county court @employees. @they should go into work at @their normal time pause the @courts will open at 8:30 a.m. @and don't forget when weather @gets bad, you can kound on our @ialert closing system for the @latest closings on air and @online. @you can also sign up for text @alerts at wkyc.com/closings and @have them sent straight to your @phone. @ time roith now, 6:07. @an autopsy scheduled today for @the central ohio police officer @killed in the line of duty. @danville officer thomas catrell @was found dead but authorities @haven't said how he died. @32-year-old ray jones is @expected to be charged with @murder. @police arrested him shortly @after the officer's body was @found. @his exgirlfriend called police @saying jones had weapons and @wanted to kill an officer. @ second suspect arrested in a @string of armed robberies in @cleveland's little italy
6:08 am
@david harrison will be arraigned @this morning. @police say harrison and two @other men pistol whipped and @robbed a priest in a church @parking lot. @police are still searching for @one other suspect. @maureen. @>> thanks, john. @frms topping the morning news @feed this morning. @nesh began governor rick snider @says he will not step down in @the face of criticism over the @water crisis in flint. @snider is preparing to make his @state of the state address @tonights and expected to talk @about the lead contamination @crisis. @critics accuse the governor of @not moving fast enough to @protect residents from lead @poisoning. @meanwhile, dozens of national @guard troops arrived in flint @yesterday to hand out bottled @water and filters. @the city switched its water @supply to the flint river to @save money. @ take a look at this wild @video. @a high-speed chase on a @california freeway ended with @officers running awe cross @lane -- across lanes of traffic @to save six puppies. @the dogs were inside the @suspect's car, which was driving @about 70 to 80 miles per hour
6:09 am
@out. @the driver, a barefoot woman @smoking a cigarette, got out of @the car. @that's when the dogs made a run @for it. @police were able to round up all @of the dogs safely, and they @arrested the driver. @ the dhala lama will be in @minnesota today looking for a @health checkup. @the spiritual leader will visit @the mayo clinic. @at 80 years old he says he had a @minor problem with his eye, but @is otherwise feeling healthy @chl: break out your wallet ts @because the soon to be los @angeles rams are taking deposits @for season tickets. @the team has a web site set up @deposits. @the first deposit came from @lakers' great and dodgers' @co-owner magic johnson. @keep in mind, this is not for @the new stadium because that's @not even opening until 2019. @this is for the coliseum that @they have there, and they are @refundable. @>> okay. @>> so you can put your deposit @in and, you know, then we'll @book our plane tickets. @>> sure.
6:10 am
@>> they are refundable in case @when they announce the price, @you see what it is, and you want @your hundred dollars back. @>> maybe they are waiting to see @how much the tickets will go @for. @>> yeah. @they won't say how many requests @they've gotten, but they say @it's unbelievable. @>> i can imagine. @yeah. @>> they won't say exactly. @>> unbelievable it's in the @thousands, or they got five. @>> one. @>> mystery. @>> right. @thanks. @ could police soon be able to @warrant? @the state that's considering a @new bill and why they're doing @it coming up. @: plus, getting to pay @attention. @why taking them out of the @classroom could be the answer @coming up. @holly. @ many of you won't be going @to the claz room today. @we've got over a hundred ialerts @school closings, delays. @lake effect snows continue to @fly to the east. @our commute forecast is frigid @and snowy. @depending on where you are, it's @east side that is seeing the @snow, and then everywhere just @really, really bitter cold this @morning with windchills below @sow row. @we're only in the teens for @highs.
6:11 am
@we'll see when it winds down and @if there's any warmer days in @our near future. @that's coming up. welcome aboard my starship. ahoy, mateys! it's full of things i love... like me brave crew... and my fellow space adventures and free of things i don't. like aliens. just like eye patches. and when it's time to refuel, i eat chex cereal. it's full of stuff we pirates need. no artificial flavors, and it's gluten-free. excelsior! eat up, me hearties!
6:13 am
@ @ 614 time teem right now. @this is a live look in east lake @where people are moving pretty @slowly. @will's camera here is going @south on route 9 # -- 91. @you can see people are taking it @easy. @a lot of snow-covered roads. @a lot of schools in that area @closed today. @we have 145 school closings on @our ialert so far. @we'll keep watching it for you. @ in the meantime, a hearing @being held in vermont today that @could open the door to police @being allowed to search drivers' @cell phones. @>> so the bill would allow @police to search your phone @without a warrant to see if you @were using it while you were @driving. @the move would make it easier @for officers to enforce the ban @on using handheld devices while @you're on the highway. @no other state allows
6:14 am
@phone use. @some states, a small sacrifice @to make the roads safer, but the @aclu is keeping an eye on this @chl you know who else is going @to keep an eye on this? @49 other states. @>> sure. @>> they are going to see how @this works out. @ students across the country @feeling more academic pressure. @how do you get them to @concentrate in class? @some texas schools have an @unusual solution. @more recess. @students get four 15-minute @recess periods, and experts say @not only do kids get more @physical activity, it's easier @for them to focus once they get @back to class. @schools in other states now say @they'll have to give it a try @next year. @>> then maybe they're a little @more tired when they come home. @>> right. @right. @ all right. @let's check in with holly @because that snow keeps coming @down, and the bitter cold is @here for all of us. @>> yes. @everyone is dealing with frigid @weather. @we do have windchill advisories @for all of northeast ohio then @obviously the lake effect snow @is a bit more isolated. @it's those of you that are east @that continue to teal with it. @so all that being said, if you @are heading to the bus stop, and
6:15 am
@know, we're close to, i think, @point. @so there's numerous schools that @are open today, and that means @you need to really bundle up @because temperatures are single @digits right now at hopkins it's @8, but it feels like it's @anywhere from about 10 to 15 @below in many locations. @if you're just walking up and @headlines. @lake snow continues east. @advisory. @windchills are below zero. @highs today. @lake effect snows expected to @subside midday, but, you know, @we'll see. @fingers crossed on this one @because like yesterday, for @example, we were expecting the @warnings to expire, and they @were extended and extended @again, and, now, we've got the @lake-effect snow warnings for @cuyahoga county through 9:00 @this morning and then for lake @and ashtabula and geauga @counties until noon and then @those windchill advisories in @addition. @lake-effect snow. @it's really been quite heavy
6:16 am
@southern lake county and then, @boy, into geauga county from @sharden, chesterland area, @chagrin falls, mayfield, south @euclid, richmond heights, you @are all really getting hit hard @right now. @so this is really a problem @because think about it, i mean, @university heights, shaker @heights, all of these areas are @spots that saw the snow @continuously yesterday, and, @now, overnight while you were @asleep, some of you already are, @you know, well over a foot on @the ground, and we're adding to @it. @now, closer to the lakeshore, @things are actually letting up a @little bit so we're seeing a bit @additional accumulation doesn't @look like it's going to be too @impressive today. @it's lake effect, though, so @subject to change is what we @always say where these snows do @persist. @we will obviously see more of @it, and we'll be tracking that @through the day. @windchills below zero, as i @mentioned. @your window nation 7-day @forecast. @we get through today, and things @start to kind of calm a bit. @going to stay cold through the
6:17 am
@20s for highs tomorrow, and, @the 30s. @that's a little more like it. @we should be mid 30s for highs. @we will be as we head into @friday and the weekend, john. @holly, thank you. @ it is 6:18. @time now for my biggest winners @ask biggest losers today in @sports. @for my biggest loser, i have to @give it to auburn university. @i guess they weren't listening. @they were warned and either they @forgot to tell the students or @they didn't enforce it. @look at this. @auburn upsets kentucky over the @week end so you would think, @hey, they should be the biggest @winners, right? @but the fans stormed the court. @can i just get it out? @i hate this tradition. @it's way overdone. @it needs to be outlawed because @someone is going to get @seriously hurt. @well, the sec has now fined @auburn $100,000 because this is @the second time offense. @the sec has rules in place to @stop things like this. @that 100 grand could be put to @better use than paying a fine @for students storming the court. @if they do it again, the fine
6:18 am
@maybe auburn should just @stop winning big games. @i'm just kidding. @you got to win, but not good use @of money there. @ my biggest winners are the @parma fliers hockey team. @they had a big weekend winning @the ra hockey tournament in @cleveland heights. @they won the championship game @in a shootout. @doesn't get more exciting than @that. @coaches are jerry, tim, dennis, @and dave. @con dprachlations -- @congratulations for winning the @tournament and thanks to leslie @for sending in the great @picture. @ if you would like to @nominate your champion or all @star, send me the picture, @e-mail them or tweet them to me johnwkyc. @ when lsu won a big game, did @you go storm the court? @>> maybe. @>> you did? @>> so you don't like the court @storming? @>> i don't.
6:19 am
@i don't. @somebody is going to get hurt @again. @i think it's silly. @>> yeah. @>> all right. @>> i'd fine you $10 by a way. @ cable giant time warner is @once again raising prices. @how much more you can expect to @pay coming up. @>> all right. @lena, if you are dreading going @into work today, why adding more @to your to do list could be a @good thing. @we have the five ways to have a @better day at work. @that's coming up. @holly. @>> can't wait to hear. @thank you. @6:20. @we've got weather out your @window. @take a look. @boy, this is going back a little @bit. @ted in cleveland calling this @one stormy times. @quite the thunderstorm cloud. @wow sdmrchlt a great capture @there, ted. @many of you sending in pictures @this morning of the snow in your @neighborhood. @thank you so much. @keep them coming.
6:21 am
@the conditions. @madison. @traffic seems to be moving okay. @we do have a lot of school @closings and delays so we're @going to keep those, of course, @the bottom of the screen there, @our ialert system, also at @wkyc.com. @ hey, twitter is back up, but @if you checked your account @overnight, you may have noticed @an error twitter suffered a @global @outage for a couple hours. @the technical error impacted @both the web and mobile app and @millions of users. @this was the second time in less @than a week that the social @media site went down. @: cable giant time warner cable @is raising prices so your @monthly cost could go up between @3 and $15 depending on how many @services you subscribe today. @time warner says they are @raising prices to help cover @their operating costs. @the price hikes roll out in new @york today. @still unclear when they'll take @effect here in ohio. @>> all right. @thanks, lena cht frm it's hard
6:22 am
@headed back to work after a @three-day weekend, but a british @work coach says there are five @simple things you can do to have @a better workday. @first, stop e-mail grazing. @that means you don't check @e-mail throughout the day. @instead, designate two chunks of @time to go through e-mails and @respond. @second, do something generous @for your coworkers like pay them @a compliment or dprab them @coffee. @third, include more on your @to-do list. @she says adding more items to do @and then checking them off your @list boosts satisfaction. @fourth, lose the assumptions. @instead of assuming that your @boss or coworker is out to get @you or setting you up for @failure, go into conversations @and situations with an open @mind. @finally, belt out your favorite @song. @singing or even just listening @to your favorite song lifts your @mood. @so -- i think that depends on @what your favorite song is, too, @because if you have one of those @ear worm songs that you're hello @>> yeah.
6:23 am
@coffee this morning, and i'm @going to sing "feelings." @big @day around here. @ here is holly with a look at @the -- @>> good coffee. @>> saying whoa, whoa, whoa to @the snow. @>> great coffee morning, john. @something warm and cozy for @sure. @hopefully you are having a nice @cozy cup yourself. @>> being serenaded in the @forecast. @i love you all. @temperatures only in the teens @today so single digits now. @windchills are below zero. @lake snow continues to fall to @the east. @travel map, that is what we're @dealing with. @we've got well over a hundred @ialerts. @school closings, delays, many @large districts are indeed @closed today. @we are going to track the snow, @let you know how much more we @expect today.
6:24 am
here in vineland, home of we love all kinds of chicken soups... white breast meat chicken every time. so if you're not going to make your own chicken soup tonight, do what we do...make it progresso. you say avocado old el paso says... zesty chicken and avocado tacos in our stand 'n stuff tortillas . (record scratch) you say stand n' stuff tortillas old el paso says...
6:25 am
@ @ live pictures here at 6:30. @this is a live look on 528 in @madison, and you see the roads @right there. @there is snow covered, but also @there's some ice. @you can see that road right @there is slick underneath that. @there's a lake effect snow @warning in effect for ashtabula @and cuyahoga counties. @windchill advisory in effect for @all of us. @it is bitter cold out there this @morning, as well chl welcome @back, everyone. @nice to have you with us. @>> good morning. @let's check with holly right now @she's been tracking the lake @effect snow and, yeah, the @bitter cold temperatures. @>> right. @that's the yuner is value theme, @as you both mentioned. @good morning to you. @here's the lake effect. @it's been real consistent snow @for those of you in eastern
6:26 am
@extending into geauga, southern @lake county. @heavy snow where you see like @the purple shades from east side @of cleveland, northern geauga @county right now. @it is really counting down, and @that's where we're getting @reports of most slowdowns. @we'll get to your traffic in @just a moment, but east side of @cleveland, cleveland heights and @shaker and university heights, @richmond heights, all of you @dealing with the snow, and these @are spots, highland heights all @day yesterday while you were @sleeping over a foot on the @ground, and it continues to pile @up this morning. @as john and lena mentioned, @we've got lake-effect snow @warnings. @for cuyahoga county, it's until @9:00. @for lake and ashtabula and @geauga, it's until noontime. @along the lakeshore itself, @we've getting a little break. @that's nice to see. @but inland, it is quite a @different story. @so that is going to be an issue, @and then we've got the windchill @advisory for every single one of @you, and although there's a lot @of closings because of the snow @to the east, there are also @closings and delays because of
6:27 am
@manfield, for example, is on a @two-hour delay this morning. @let's get a check on your drive @and take a look at what's @happening. @it's just turning over to 632 @dime time. @so here's the overview. @we continue to get reports that @271 is just a mess, and this @makes sense because these are @the areas that i just showed you @in eastern cuyahoga county that @are dealing with all that @lake-effect snow. @so if you travel 271 over @towards 422 into geauga county, @you better allow extra time. @right now, delays anywhere from @maybe another 10 to 15 minutes @as far as getting to your test @nation -- destination, but, you @know, traffic does pick up @beyond this, john and lena. @this is still like a slower time @of day so we're anticipating @that there will be a lot of @delays as more of you get on the @roads. @just be careful. @>> that's the best advice right @there. @all right, holly. @ it is 6:32. @let's head outside now. @our crews keeping you updated on @the road conditions. @>> for a live look, let's head @back out. @tiffany tarpley, who is
6:28 am
@all those schools in your area @are closed today, tiffany. @>> yes, they are, lena, and you @are looking at the roads here @right now. @you can see part of the roadway @is snow covered over here to my @left, but where we are in the @right lane, you see a little bit @more pavement here. @as you said, we are on our way @to ashtabula heading on 90 east @right now, but, boy, we've been @all over the place this morning. @we started out on 90 east, but, @of course, from downtown @cleveland into euclid, but then @when we got up to about route @615, we really noticed the heavy @snow that was coming down. @let's show you some video of @some of the semitrucks that had @road. @they had to pull off at the rest @area, and there were just so @many of them that didn't want to @take any chances. @they actually just had to pull @over on 90 east, you know, we @saw a lot of semis that way. @i would say probably about 50 of @them on either side of the road. @if we can come back out here
6:29 am
@snowfall, it is very light right @now here in ashtabula county, @but we've seen periods, of @course, in geauga county where @we've seen some heavier snowfall @then light snowfall. @so, of course, we know, john, @that's what you get when you @talk about lake-effect snow. @>> that's right. @and it can change in such a @hurry, too. @all right. @tiffany, thank you. @ right now, we want to check @with will. @he's out in willowwick. @you know about that because this @morning there's been times where @it's been really coming down and @other times, you've just had to @deal with light snowfall. @>> yeah chl seems to be a little @bit of a bubble over here on the @east side up along the lake @here, john, where there's one @section of two that seemed to @constantly have snow coming down @and then just outside of it on @either side, it seemed to kind @of dull down a little bit or @stop all together. @now, two has been really off and @on as far as what you're seeing @on the lane side of things, as @well, but it's been very slick. @even when you can't see the @pavement, we've seen several @spin outs this morning and felt @in the truck we're on now. @giving you a live look at what @some of the back roads maybe
6:30 am
@this is willowwick, maybe better @classified as a back trail @because you really can't see @much here. @a lot of ice underneath, and you @could see here that people are @getting up early this morning @trying to plow their way out of @their driveways. @we've seen a couple snow blowers @going out here, but to give you @an idea, i mean, too off and on, @you can see paefment. @most of these back roads, @though, you are not seeing @anything at all. @the good news is, though, it is @chewed down and up a little bit @from people being on the roads @all day yesterday. @really, no wind going on down @here that's blowing it up and @around so that's good news, as @well, but, also, the snow off @and on starting to pick back up @here a little bit at around 6:30 @here, john. @>> all right. @will, thank you. @ don't forget when the @weather gets bad, you can count @on our ialert closing system for @the latest closings on air and @online. @you can also sign up for text @alerts at wkyc.com/closings and @have them sent straight to your @phone. @ now, let's head over to @maureen with the morning news @feed.
6:31 am
@the virus that prompted a travel @warning for women has now been @detected in the u.s.. @a baby born in oahu, hawaii with @brain damage was confirmed to @have the zeka virus after @testing by a centers for disease @control lab. @the virus is transmitted by @mosquitos and has been linked to @brain damage in newborns. @it's believed the baby's mother @was infected while living in @brazil last year. @a travel warning has been issued @for where the zika virus is most @prevalent. @ as his former team gets @ready for the afc title game, @former new england patriot aaron @hernandez has a court in date @today. @later a judge will set a trial @date for his second murder @challenge. @he's accused of gunning down two @men at a boston nightclub in @2012. @last year, a jury convicted @hernandez of murdering a friend @and was sentenced to life in @prison. @ instead of allowing guns in @the classroom, one georgia @lawmaker is proposing a bill to @allow tasers and electroshock @weapons instead.
6:32 am
