now at 6:00a shooting here at an apartment building in downtown cleveland. what police found inside that could be a possible motive. >> plus, live team coverage of the winter storm taking aim at the east coast, coming up, a live report from virginia where they're expecting much more than a foot of snow, almost much more than four feet. also, a look at the travel nightmare this storm has caused even before the flakes are flying. let's check in with holly who's been tracking that storm as well as our forecast, looking pretty good, though.

we're going to miss this major storm that he we're talking about that's really going to have the greatest impact through the mid-atlantic. we'll get to. locally, you're waking up to a pretty calm morning. there are a few flurries flying. we've been showing you live looks and snowflakes here and there, but nothing that's going to accumulate. otherwise, mostly cloudy skies. temperatures will be low 20s at 9:00, mid-20s at noon. highs today should end up close to 30 degrees. as we get a look at local temperatures here as you're waking up and getting out the door and trying to get the kids to the bus stop, teens and 20s. it's still cold and the winds a bit brisk today. center middle school today in strongville is closed because of no heat. so not because of any kind of weather but obviously it's too cold to deal with the no heat thing today. so they're closed on ialert. let's take a look at your morning commute.

deal more at mike bass ford. 6:01 right now. dani is off this week. she'll be back on monday. the overview here is still looking good. green and everything moving along. we're zooming in the akron area. just a reminder. it's cold and there could be slick spots. take it easy as the morning gets under way. we'll continue to check on road conditions. lynna, back to you. >> thank you, holly. cleveland police are investigating after two people were shot and killed at an apartment building in the warehouse district in downtown. will ujek joins us along west 9 9th street with more on this case. police were responding to a robbery there. >> reporter: yeah, lynna, they got the call for a reported robbery here at archery apartments at 8:30 last night. when they showed up, they found two victims shot and suspects had fled the scene. one man was pronounced dead her. the other taken to the hospital

it happened on the floor at the archer apartments and a considerable amount of dope was found inside the apartment. one resident here says this all comes as quite a surprise. >> i talked to a few people who actually live there too. they said they had no idea anything was going on when it was occurring. it's pretty guy et for the most part in there. it kind of surprised me there would be alleged incidents of crime one floor above where i live. >> reporter: and police tell us they're trying to determine exact motives here because no one was talking, but they're continuing their investigation. we'll continue the follow this, bringing you any updates we get here on our app and on our website, wkyc.com. lynna. >> thank you, will. our other top story, the storm that's supposed to cause major problems for the east coast. thousands of flights have been canceled in cities right in the eye of the storm. washington, dc, baltimore,

a closer look at the impact the storm is having on cleveland hopkins airport. while most of the flights are on schedule, several flights have been canceled for tonight and tomorrow. holly, you have been tracking this storm for days and the snowals are going to go up. minutes ago. i will show you. it looks like d.c. could be in for higher amounts than originally expected. so it's just a mess. we've got thunderstorms and heavy, heavy rains on the system. we had tornado watches earlier this morning that have since expired. you can see all the snow in tennessee, kentucky through north carolina and virginia. plus, you've got the icy mix in south carolina. so it is really just shaping up to be the monstrous storm that we thought. so the winter storm watches, warnings, blizzard warnings,

you see. we're talking through the carolinas and even into tennessee and kentucky, west virginia, parts of southern pennsylvania. philadelphia also expected to have a pretty big impact from this storm system. totals. now, this is what lynna was talking about earlier. earlier we were expecting 35 plus inches in d.c. these are projections, but 40 plus inches crippling. if you could even imagine, that would be crippling around here. we're talking up to 15 inches in charleston. right now it looks like from washington to philadelphia, major impact there with philly close to 17 inches of snow by the end of all of this. new york and boston seeing five to seven inches of snow. so, you know, we're going to continue to tweak these amounts and keep you updated throughout the day.

be something that we'll be watching through the next 24-36 hours. >> wow. that's something else. thanks, holly. now we want to take you to one of the areas expected to get hit pretty hard by this storm. nbc's jay gray is in new york with more on what people are doing to prepare for themselves. good morning, jay? >> reporter: hey there. good morning, lynna. since we last talked, the snow is really picking up here. that's expected to continue through at least saturday evening. it is going to intensify. the winds are going to pick up. a lot of residents making sure they're ready not only for what could be record snowfall but also a lack of power that could last throughout the week. the national weather service has said they expect blizzard and white-out conditions. they expect winds reaching maybe even 50 miles per hour at the peak of this storm. power crews have staged across the region. they're prepared to move in

they can can. we know that a lot of people want to make sure they stay out out of this mess as it continues to build here. all of the bread and milk and water gone from the shelves. just making sure they have those provisions. not only for if snowfall but what will come after that. for a lot of people, that's going to be a lack of power. a national guard called in for a state of emergency. 500 troops on the ground. more available if necessary. every state trooper in the state is ready to be a part of the response efforts here. really, the concern becomes now this accumulation short-term, but the power loss in making sure that everybody is secure and ready for that. urging everyone, obviously, to absolutely necessary. 500 vehicles support vehicles are out and trying to keep the roads passable.

snow continues to build. so shaping up to be what will likely be a very rough weekend for a lot of people here on the leading edge of this storm that's going to move across the east coast and affect 80 to 90 million. a tough go for a lot of folks for the next 24-36 hours. >> wow, sounds like they're throwing everything at it. we certainly have our thoughts and prayers to everyone out there. thanks so much, jay. now, back here at home, a third suspect is behind bars bars next with a string of -- in connection with a string of armed robberies. he and two other men allegedly pistol whipped and robbed a priest in a parking lot last month. the other suspects were arrested earlier this month. an akron man expecting to go on a date with a woman he met online is instead robbed at gunpoint. 22-year-old christian roughen is charged with aggravated robbery. the victim went to meet his date sunday night. instead, the four robbers

drugs, and a credit card. akron police are still trying to identify the other three suspects. a group that wants to save lakewood hospital is not giving up yet. >> our heartbreak gave way to energy that's now in overdrive. voters rejected a ballot issue in november that would have required a public vote before the city could close the hospital. despite losing, the group has another plan. they're submitting a petition to add an issue on the march ballot that would repeal the city ordinance that would close the hospital. in response, the city of lakewood said the city council's current plan will address health care needs. the ohio attorney general's office say they receive hundreds of calls every week about tax related scams. we talked to one local woman who says she was the victim of a tax scam. this morning she wants others to be on the alert because those scammers are often after your identity. >> it makes me feel scared

by the big one. all the hoopla that's going on in the mid-atlantic and up the east coast is going to stay there. upper teens to around 20 degrees. we need to bundle up. we have a few flurries around. it will be cold, overcast. like i said, the big storm does miss us here in northeast ohio. and with the exception of just a few flurries today, looks pretty good for us. mid-20s at noon. upper 20s to around 30 degrees at 5:00. 6:17. temperatures are teens and 20s. this is a little bit warmer than we've been. each day this week, we've been adding. if you think about where we started off, it's so frigid on day. then we had school closings. that's for sure. things are much calmer today. as we track on future view, we're expecting quiet weather, more or less w the exception of those flurries at times. dry. snow chances stay well to the

and those of you who live in new philadelphia, you may get brushed with a few light snow showers, but nothing that's going to warrant any kind of panic or major concern. by late saturday, we're into sunday. sunday is probably the best day to get out and take advantage of the snow we have on the ground. if you look at the very bottom of your screen, this is the current radar picture. that's the storm. i will expand the view. you can see it in its entirety. we're seeing everything from severe storms to blizzard like conditions. winds and white-out conditions expected. we've got numerous winter storm warnings. you name it, we've pretty much seen it. and the newest snowfall projections bring 40 plus inches for washington, dc. so that's new information since you've gone to bed last night.

6:24 right now. some netflix customers are about to get hit with a price hike. the video streaming service says it's about to raise their monthly subscription fee for many long time subscribers. people who are paying $7.99 will have a choice. they can pay the same for standard definition service or $2 more for high definition. they now have 79 million subscribers. the winter storm threatening the east coast is not expected to drop much snow here, but it's already led to flights being canceled. here is a live look at hopkins airport right now. 3,000 flights are canceled all across the country. and some flights out of cleveland are canceled for tonight and tomorrow.

live from washington, dc. good morning, edward. >> reporter: we're in the cross hairs here in d.c. the city goes into lockdown later on today, for lack of a better term. all government workers have been cleared to go home at noon today. schools have been closed already in the areas and surrounding areas in maryland and virginia here. even the d.c. metro system. [audio difficulties] has to be closed all weekend. that has not happened since 2012 when hurricane sandy came through this area. they're going to put down -- [audio difficulties] >> and we apologize for that satellite connection. it's actually weather related. we'll try to get back with edward, if we can. holly mentioned they're expecting 40 inches of snow

we'll keep you posted on the situation there. two people are dead this morning after a shooting in the popular warehouse district. will ujek joins us live with the details. >> reporter: this all happened last night, lynna. police got a call about a robbery. they showed up at 8:30 last night. when they showed up, they found two people had been shot. one was dead at the time. the other was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, dying hours later. officials say it happened on the 8th floor and that a considerable amount of dope was found inside the apartment. one resident said it came as quite a surprise because it's very quiet here. they didn't expect anything here or hear anything on the 7th 7th floor, one below. they're still trying to determine the exact motive here. they're going to be looking into this. police are continuing their investigation today. when we hear something, we'll let you know, keep you updated

and on our app over at wkyc. lynna. >> thanks, will. there will be a candlelight vigil for a family killed in a house explosion. they will be remembered fondly by friends and loved ones. the gathering comes amid troubling findings, that the explosion may have been a murder-suicide. jeff mathers had bouts of depression. the vigil begins at 6:00 at the middle school gym. a nurse at an assisted living facility is accused of sexually abusing a resident. he's alleged to have sexual contact with the elderly patient who was mentally impaired. there's now a warrant out for the suspect. he's not under arrest yet. none of these allegations have any foundation whatsoever. i have no connection to any

for flying a plane while drunk. 60-year-old david'reston was a pilot for alaskan airlines and was arrested yesterday. court documents say the flight happened in june 2014. officials say he had a blood- alcohol level of .13. he was released on a $25,000 bond. if convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison. >> an avalanche in utah killed injured. the avalanche occurred 10 miles east of salt lake city. officials say the victim was buried in the avalanche. he was killed in the slide. another man around the same age was partially buried. he sustained injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital. a lawsuit against bill cosby has been dismissed. a federal judge in pennsylvania sided with the comedian and tossed out the defamation

6:52 right now. welcome back. time for today's top stories in your morning rush. will has an update on a deadly building. first, a huge winter storm is threatening the east coast. above offices this washington, dc at noon. states of emergency have been declared in five states. this storm could bring three feet of snow and cause more than a billion dollars in damage. the snow will start falling today. this morning the today show is following all the preparations ahead of the storm. this massive storm is coming. the question now is how prepared are we? here in the washington, dc area, this is the biggest salt barn east of the mississippi.

day they treat the roads with storms. the question will be how safe will the roads be and how many people will be impacted. this morning some 80 million are in the eye of the storm. that number can grow as we expect what could be a system moving through. coming up. back here at home, a live look at cleveland hopkins airport. 3,000 flights are already canceled ahead of this storm. a few flights originally scheduled to leave this evening and tomorrow have already been canceled. there are flights headed to washington, dc, baltimore, and other areas that are expected to be hardest hit. will? >> reporter: lynna, here cleveland police are investigating after a shooting here took the lives of two people at the archer apartments last night. police got the call about 8:30 last night actually for a robbery. when they showed up, they found that one person was dead, another shot in critical condition.

this is the time traffic picks up. we do have an accident to report. here is the overview. we'll zoom in, i480 at transportation boulevard there's an accident blocking the center lane. so two lanes are completely blocked, and it's stop-and-go traffic all the way back to granger road. as you can see here, the backup is looking pretty hefty at this early hour. so if you can think of an alternate route, if you're watching this from the comfort of your own home, make sure consideration. we'll probably have some backups for quite a bit with that happening. we'll keep you updated throughout the today show. your forecast is looking quite lovely compared to what they will be dealing with across the mid-atlantic and east coast. upper 20s today. 30s for the weekend. so we'll be more seasonal. a few flurries around today. day.
