year. coming up, a look at the numbers, plus, what the city of cleveland plans to do about it. plus, bank takeover. what a deal between huntington bank and merritt means. first, holly is tracking your weather. as we take a live look outside, you can see we're just over two months away from indians opening day. how about that. nice to see wet roads as opposed to snow cover. a lot of the snow as melted overnight while you've been asleep because temperatures have actually been rising. most of you are waking up to low and middle 40s. this is going to be our warmest part of the day. cold front pushes through. it's a strong one. that will happen mid-to late morning. and then we start to see temperatures fall back. in the meantime, we've had scattered rain when the snow melts. 37 degrees by noontime.

to near 34 at 5:00, plus, with those winds today, it will feel even colder. taking a look at what's happening on radar. you can see some scattered rain showers moving through. we've got a line of showers from cleveland, west and east suburbs. it's raining downtown today. south into akron. as we get even closer yet, you can see rain is just moving out of strongville. on the east side, it's pretty rainy. light to moderate. it's going to slow you down, places like mayfield heights and shaker into south russell. we're all seeing the showers. once the showers pass, the roads will still be wet because of the slush. our biggest traffic alert remains on i-70 southbound after state route 3 where only the right lane is open because

semi trucks. this is going to be closed for a couple of hours. we're not seeing delays in that area. if you travel after 6:00 a.m., you typically travel in that area and this is not clear, you can expect some delays. but other than that, we have normal drive times. for those of you who travel 271 south and get off in macedonia, odot has planned to close that ramp until 6:00 a.m., but i just spoke to macedonia police, and they say the ramp is open. no longer do you need to take that exit ramp 8 north to 82. again, they're going to be closing that ramp each night because of noise pannal installation. we're learning huntington bank is taking over first merritt bank. >> maureen kyle is following impact this will have on

there will be layoffs. huntington bank will try to keep those layoffs to a minimum. there are more than 2,000 employees with first merritt in akron area alone. now, the newspaper also report reports some branch locations will close. it will create the number one bank by deposits in ohio. rumor increased their shares. steve steiner, huntington ceo will meet with employees. he said they're committed to the legacy of first merritt in the city. john and lynna, back to you. cleveland surpassed 100 homicide. this year ten people were killed in the first 25 years of january. city council members once again discussing what can be done. alyssa raymond joins us live about. >> reporter: good morning, john.

something about this want people to know this is a personal problem, and they don't want people to get numb to this. more often than not, when we go out to talk to people on the street, people say, not another one or there's another one. they're starting to lose track of how many. the past two years the city exceeded the yearly rate. 65% of these homicides are in retaliation, and murders are the number one war in downtown cleveland. all the development and the money being pumped into downtown, he says, is not stopping the violence. here's what he said after presenting his plan at last night's meeting. >> for the last two years, we've had 220 hd in 220 homicides in cleveland. we're going for the third

i think we've come to the realization that the status quo is not acceptable. >> reed presented a three-tier plan. give $250,000 to the peacemakers alliance. that's the violence interrupters in the city. he also wants all officers to have dash cams on police vehicles as well as body cams on every officer. the other thing he wants to do is install surveillance cameras in all the neighborhoods, not just downtown. and in the next couple of weeks, city council will be getting the budget. if things don't change in that bunt, they're not going to get anywhere. back to you in the studio. >> all right. thanks, alyssa. there are more questions in the northeast ohio town where high levels of lead have been found in the drinking water. we've learned that the person operating the water system has

the state looks into what went wrong. the ohio department says the operator wasn't doing his job and may have falsified reports. residents say they're still afraid. >> instant fear. we're very afraid. we're just taking one day at a time. we don't know what to the. >> we're told that lead levels in the water are falling and that only a handful of homes and a fountain at a high school are still testing high. now to central ohio where a case of stranger danger led to a fiery high speed police chase. and it was caught on dash cam video. speeds topped 100 miles per hour until the van caught fire. we showed you the booking photo there of david moore. the police began when he tried to lure a teen to his car and she ran home and called 911.

130 new full-time jobs thanks in part to a new tax break from the state. the ohio tax credit authority yesterday approved an 8-year project. they will add nearly $4 million in new annual payroll by 2018. time right now is 5:07. to all the moms who could use a few extra hands, how about a stroller you don't even need to push? >> wow. do you trust this thing? we're going to talk about this smart stroller. >> and the presidential campaigns ramping up this week before monday's caucuses in iowa. what the candidates have planned for a final push. >> a great tuesday to you. temperatures are really mild as you're waking up. 40s right now. they will be falling, and some scattered rain is happening as we're all waking up. so get those umbrellas handy.

>> reporter: good morning, john and lynna. yeah, monday is the day. the very first contest. all of the candidates are desperate to show why they should win, but they want the momentum of a win. >> the temperatures may be cold, but each race is heating up. the democratic candidates highlighted their differences from one another as they made a final pitch to people in iowa. >> i led the effort against wall street deregulation. see where hillary clinton was on this issue. >> we tackled income equality and produced results. not talk, but action. that's what i will do in office. >> meanwhile, on the republican side, the race is getting nasty between donald trump and ted cruz. >> i will not respond in kind because the people of iowa, south carolina, new hampshire, people of this country deserve better.

through mid-to-late morning. we're going to really see temperatures drop off, as it does. we'll take you to the bus stop. we have a beautiful look at the lorraine bridge. do you know what we're seeing? wet roads. there's been a lot of melting sleeping. temperatures so mild. that trend will obviously continue here initially this morning. 46, as john and lynna it's 5:14. at the bus stop. it's breezy. so even though we're mid-40s, it's still going to feel cooler. and just wait, you better have a heavier coat backed in the book back for later today. you will need it. scattered rain mainly this morning. temperatures fall, scattered snow tomorrow. we could see a flurry today. we don't have to take that out of the equation. i don't think it's going to be a big deal, though. it's all going backwards today

through mid-to-late morning. 34 degrees at 5:00, but it will feel colder than that with those gusty winds in the southwest. shifting to the northwest behind the front. look at the temperatures behind it now. you get the idea. chicago is at 31. annapolis is at 34 degrees. detroit is still in the 40s. and so are we. we've got low to mid-40s everywhere. akron, canton, you're at 46. rain is moving through. it's just rain, obviously, with temperatures as mild as they are from cleveland's east side. we are seeing showers. lake and geauga county dealing with the rainy weather. we're talking rain, not snow. it's definitely helping to get it's happening. once we're at 10:30, the rain is already through. notice temperatures are mainly in the 30s at that point.

we've got a few dots of white showing up. there could be a few flurries. this is nothing that's going to be a big deal. as we get into the overnight hours, more so tomorrow we could see lake effect snow showers right along the lake shore is where we're seeing that. this is 4:30 a.m. on wednesday. perhaps those of you who are in that little lake effect band pick up a half an inch of snow. that would be the extent of it. looks like we're going to stay cold through the middle of the week. seasonably cold midweek and then another mild little boost as we get into the weekends. 30s and falling for today. this morning. southwest, 15-20. gusts as high as 30. window nation, 7-day forecast, 30s, scattered lake snow. a few snow showers around for thursday. and that will clear out on friday. and then we warm back up. it looks like over the weekend.

we cool back down again. let's get a check on your commute time. just about 5:17. good tuesday morning to you. if you travel 71 and 271, county. it looks like we have work going on here. i called highway patrol because i thought maybe that accident that i reported on on 71 south after 3:00 had the wrong location, but they said, no, they're not reporting anything at 271. so we do still have this crash also in medina county, two semi trucks involved many this one. only the right lane is open. you can expect delays here when the height of morning rush hits. right now, we're seeing 71 at 76. looks pretty good.

>> the cliffs are crumbling and a third apartment building is now inhabitable. the sea wall is damaged and there was a trail of destruction there. any new parents know those babies don't stroll themselves. or do they? >> do you see what that woman is doing there. a new stroller design is a self- propelling stroller. there's an electric engine for going uphill. that makes it a little easier. it has built-in rocker, music, and there are extra cameras. they launched an indie fund me page. the cheapest without the self- propelling feature is about 400. this is going to launch next year. for all of those parents -- i'm thinking it takes the fun out of going uphill and the exercise out of it. >> defeats the purpose.

check out these pits. that's not regular sand in are the. that's probably the most expensive sand you've ever played with. because mars has different -- it's made of spheres that allows it to be lighter so they can simulate is surface of mars or the moon. notice the tires. these are not rubber.

they're the same tires used in the apollo missions and rovers back on the moon. these are the same tires used in apollo 15 when they landed and moved around the surface. it's made by tiny springs that connect together and make the tires. they are very mallable and bendable. these types of tires are something that nasa thinks can be put into vehicles here on earth. they last a whole lot longer. imagine some of the work going on right here for space may actually end up in our own vehicles in the future. >> that makes perfect sense. you can't get a flat tire up there. >> when you break 25% of the springs in the tire, it retains 90% of its function. that's a whole lot better than rubber. >> wow. >> right here at nasa. >> thank you, greg. >> a nice look into the future.

topping the morning rush at 5:30. bic announcement d big announcement overnight. huntington bank. the company will go by the huntington name. there are more than 2,000 employees with first merritt in the akron area alone. huntington officials say first merritt layoffs are expected and some branch locations will be closed because the two banks are too close to one another. the deal makes huntington bank the number one bank by deposits in ohio. alyssa? >> reporter: 10 homicide in the city of cleveland in the first days of the new year. we'll reach 100 murders for the third year in a row. last year, 25 days into the year, there were three homicides. the year before that, eight at the time. this year, already ten. at last night's meeting,

because of one crash. john and lynna, back to you. >> dani, thank you. in just under a week, the presidential primary season will officially kick off when voters head to the caucuses in iowa. >> and john kasich could be getting momentum. this is an important get for the governor. >> yeah, john, pretty big endorsement here for the kasich company. the globe is supporting the governor. while the endorsement may not do anything to swing voters in iowa who start the voting process for the country next monday, the globe is well read in new hampshire, which is where kasich has been focusing all of his attention. the boston globe called kasich an experienced political figure with a record of results. the republican most likely to be successful on the national stage. latest polling out of in new hampshire has him tied for

a lot of narrowing has to do with the crowded republican primary. the boston globe says the gop needs to settle on the fight to take it to trump. trump and cruz have commanding leads there. other candidates have swarmed to iowa ahead of the caucuses. but he's been there twice so far this month with a few other stops this week. it's clear he's focused on new hampshire, and this endorsement should help. >> thank you. 5:34, a man is in custody following a standoff with police. police say justin reed handcuffed a woman inside a home on west 127th near triskit and held her against her will. he allegedly threatened an officer with a knife. he's facing multiple charges. fire crews are investigating what caused a fire to break out on east 118th street in cleveland. we're told the fire started in

everyone got out safely. one man was taken to an area hospital. it's unclear how he was injured. the sisters killed in a duplex fire have been identified identified. they were found dead inside the home on east 147th last week. fire officials say the duplex was engulfed when they arrived. the cause remains under investigation. the former portage county police chief who gained internet fame for his department's facebook page has been convicted of four misdemeanors. david oliver was sentenced to two years of probation and fined $300. he was convicted of attempted theft in office and simple assault involving a female officer who accused him of sexual harrassment. oliver must also pay court costs and had to hand over his certificate to be a police officer. a woman is accused of taking another woman's wallet

dollars of charges. investigators say she pick pocketed a woman. the victim's credit card was used to buy $5,000 worth of items. it includes 1900 worth at game stop. call police. a man is arrested after leading police on a high speed chase. this man, shane collins, was driving under the influence over. he reached 100 miles per hour in 25 mile-per-hour zone. officers found a loaded handgun in his vehicle. marijuana pipes and other drug paraphernalia. courtroom. the police officer who recently lost his partner jethro has found a new partner.

this video has been trending online. a teenager playing the piano as part of a program in the lansing area called keys in the city. pianos are put in public cities for people to play. a high school senior sat down to play a beautiful song. what makes this story even better is the teenager never had money for formal training or piano lessons, so he taught himself how to play just four years ago. you have to listen. [music] if this is not a lesson that anything is possible in life, i don't know what is.

if you're not looking at your tv, i will tell you 20s and 30s is what we're seeing in places like chicago, st. louis, indianapolis, minneapolis. we are all in the 40s this morning. so it really feels -- i mean, i think i can safely say warm. 42 in wooster, elyria, 46 degrees. rain showers is what's happening. no snow showers. snow has been melting when you're asleep. we've got rain around sandusky. ashtabula county seeing showers. we're seeing spotty showers around portage county. as we track, around 11:00 a.m., that's all to the east. here comes a lot of cloud cover and blustery, colder conditions. so temperatures will be in the 30s. it will feel like it's in the 20s. even teens at times later today as the temperatures drop backwards.

time right now is 5:47. the water crisis in flint, michigan continues to make headlines. >> today another update on the contaminated water that the community is dealing with. maureen kyle has that story. >> parents can get their kids tested for free. the tests are available for children up to six years old. high levels of lead in the body can cause problems with the brain, kidney, and bone marrow. it can also cause learning difficultlies. a city council meeting in atlantic city. city officials will discuss filing for bankruptcy. last week governor chris christie rejected a financial aid package for the city. the mayor says with no help from the state, the city council has to consider all options. the world heatlh organization is warning that the zika virus is likely to spread all throughout the

that would include everywhere except canada and chile. it's suspected of causing birth defects. it'snew to the region so few have been affected by it. there have been no local infections so far in the u.s. and america now has an official comfort food. can you guess what it is by that video? it's pizza. the harris poll interviewed u.s. adults and pizza topped the list of 15% of them. that's a big win over chocolate and ice cream. those two tied with 7% each. the study also showed that 54% of women reach for comfort food when stressed while the majority of men indulge after a good day. it made me realize, considering i always reach for pizza, chocolate, and ice cream, i must be stressed 24/7. >> i bought it, and i was having a great day. >> so you and i can have dinner
