6:01 am
@your saturday forecast. @>> reporter: it is such a @beautiful view by day or by @night. @we are starting off with cloud @cover this morning. @but our winds are fairly light, @about 5 to 10 miles per hour @winds right now. @we'll bump it up a tiny bit @into the afternoon. @we'll keep most of the clouds @through midmorning. @late afternoon, midday we'll @start to clear out. @see some sunshine and that is @going to help our temperatures @spike quite a bit. @southwest winds. @so we'll pull out of the 20s @and low 30s. @hit the upper 30s to near 40 @degrees later on this @afternoon. @i think for most of us you are @going to enjoy not only our @saturday temperatures but i'm @tracking warmer air on the way @for tomorrow with our super @bowl sunday. @you do know it is february so @eventually the cold air will @return. @when the moisture hits us, we @could be looking at @accumulating snow. @i'll give you all the details @when i join us next. @ we are going to start this
6:02 am
@morning. @one person is dead following @the fire on cleveland's east @side. @it happened at a home on east @133rd street near union avenue @just after 3:00. @cleveland fire tells us the man @was found on the second floor @of the home and taken to a @nearby hospital where he later @died. @no word yet on what caused this @fire. @more details for you later @today right here on wkyc. @ the fbi is looking for @someone they say is shining @laser lights at planes near @hopkins. @there have been 25 incidents. @>> reporter: if there is not @enough turbulence on your @flight already it could get @worse if your pilot has to deal @with criminals shining lasers @into the cockpit. @the fbi tells us twice thursday
6:03 am
@someone flashed a laser light @on a plane. @>> it can cause them flash @blindness, it can cause them to @have some spotty looks. @you know when you shine a light @in your eye it can cause you to @see spots. @>> reporter: the lasers could @cause the pilots to diverted @their flight. @>> @>> reporter: it hasn't happened @in our area but in other areas @it has happened because of a @laser strike. @>> reporter: we tested this @laser.er to show how much harm @the small beam can do. @at one foot away the beam is @only a few millimeters wide. @but the same beam is four times @as wide 50 feet away uu two @millimeter beams turned into a @6 foot-wide blinding light. @it is even worse at night.
6:04 am
@seconds before you get your @night vision back again. @especially if you are a @commercial pilot flying a jet @moving very fast. @it is not funny, it is not fun. @it is very dangerous. @>> reporter: channel 3 news. @>> very interesting information @there. @ a sheriff's deputy shot and @killed a man thursday night. @the sheriff's office responded @to a 911 call and the man @house. @they say he did not drop it @when he was told to do so, one @of the deputies shot the man. @when deputies went inside the @home they found a woman with @severe stab wounds. @she is in fair condition this @morning. @ the first class of @cleveland police cadets to @receive training from the ohio @state highway patrol is now @almost halfway through that @training. @you recall the move to the @columbus-based academy sparked
6:05 am
@and the police union. @we wanted to see firsthand what @the cadets are learning during @their extended stay. @brandon simmons has more on @their story from columbus. @>> reporter: each day for @cleveland's newest police @cadets starts with a little @physical training. @>> a residential academy with a @strong academic focus in a @paramilitary setting. @>> reporter: they'll start that @day this way for the next 28 @weeks. @>> they can focus on academics, @operations on training as @opposed to some things that @might distract them if they @would to take care of other @obligations at home. @>> 46 sleep here monday through @friday. @the rules here are strict.
6:06 am
@>> reporter: this as we @showcase the trainees, equates @to seeing a weapon or not @seeing a weapon. @perceiving a threat, not @perceiving a threat. @>> reporter: over the 4--month @period students spend time @learning the law and more @importantly, how to be @professional. @they also spend plenty of time @getting in shape and building @camaraderie. @>> reporter: the move to @columbus wasn't without @controversy. @the cleveland police union @argued against it from day one, @saying cleveland's academy was @better suited for the job. @it allows cleveland's academy @time to provide additional @training for veteran officers. @a judge agreed. @the highway patrol is focused @on providing proper training. @>> we are not concerned @troopers officers from other @agencies or cleveland. @they all receive the same basic
6:07 am
@>> reporter: in just a couple @of months cleveland should have @46 new, well trained officers. @in columbus, brandon simmons, @channel 3 news. @>> reporter: the recruits will @have an additional 4 to 8 weeks @of training back here in @cleveland. @they'll graduate in may and @should be working side by side @with veteran police officers @when the rnc kicks off in july. @ @ we are three days from the @new hampshire primary and it is @full steam ahead. @hillary clinton is trying to @get the female vote in the @state where the majority of @women are actually backing @bernie sanders. @the latest poll shows she is @not only trailing but also @among women by a margin of 4%. @ governor john kasich may @fall into fourth place in the
6:08 am
@but he is picking up a star @powered endorsement. @arnold schwarzenegger announced @he is backing kasich. @the governor has held his @annual sports festival in @columbus for almost two @decades. @ every year a touch of @spring returns to cleveland @during the dead of winter. @and this weekend the great big @home and garden show takes over @and that is where we find @channel 3's alyssa raymond. @>> reporter: we were at the @high-tech home and now we are @at the urban farm house. @a new concept done with jason @come from? @>> reporter: basically @joanna. @we love them. @we are big fans. @part of the reason we did this @is we wanted to keep the old @farm house style and theme @going. @but with an urban feel to it. @so this house is actually built
6:09 am
@it is narrow, a little bit @deeper. @what we have is 1800 square @feet. @we have 3 bedroom, two bath, @and some of the features @include a 9-foot ceiling, solid @wood floor, we have it is nice @proportionwise, it is custom @made cabinets. @the furniture is provided by @weaver furniture, our sister @company, known for their @quality furniture. @so really what we try to focus @on is quality, first of all, @but style, try to mix a little @bit old with the new and we are @really excited about it. @>> reporter: let's talk about @these barn doors back here. @a cool feature. @have never seen something like @this. @>> people seem to love it. @again it is the old meets new. @it is stained with the modern, @a few modern things and
6:10 am
@so it is really functional and @very usable. @>> reporter: what is the square @footage in the bedrooms? @>> we have a 13 by 12, and @upstairs the girls' bedroom is @bigger with a reading nook. @a few very unique features. @you really need to come down @and see it. @>> reporter: jason was saying a @lot of people have been very @interested in this backsplash, @actually ceramic. @tiffany, back to you in the @studio. @>> beautiful i would take that @home or the last one you showed @me. @thank you alyssa. @ new information being @released by the cdc this week @regarding the zika virus. @we are talking to a local @expert what you need to know,
6:11 am
@ @ federal health officials @have issued new guidelines @about the zika virus, aimed at @preventing the spread of the @disease in this country. @the medical director of @infection control joins me now, @dr. jenniferhasbeenarehasbeen. @hanrahan. @>> reporter: how concerned @should we be about this here in @ohio? @i know it has been happening @for quite some time now, but it @is new to the americas? @how concerned should we be? @>> fortunately, we don't have @the mosquitoes that carry the @zika virus but people travel to @areas, including the southern
6:12 am
@likely will be some cases here. @but we probably won't have a @large outbreak. @>> reporter: is this a @potentially deadly virus? @what are the symptoms here? @>> reporter: 80% of the people @who get this infection don't @have any symptoms at all. @most people will have a mild @viral illness, there may be @rash, conjunctivitis, fever, @muscle aches. @the problem is there have been @birth defects linked with zika @virus. @everyone has heard of micro @encephally. @>> reporter: we've heard about @florida too, recently, @emergencies being declared @there. @should we be concerned if we @travel to florida? @>> i think one of the things @people have to keep in mind is @these same mosquitoes carry a @lot of viruses. @other infections people can get @and it is just a really good @idea to wear mosquito repellant
6:13 am
@there is directions that tell @you how long it lasts and @sense. @>> reporter: we know pregnant @women should be concerned but @their children? @>> a lot of people are asking @about whether their kids should @travel to these areas. @i think you should use your @judgment and know whether to @reapply the repellant. @ just ahead, preparations @for a new construction project @is causing closures downtown. @how you can avoid the traffic @headaches, coming up. @ we are on tap for a very @nice weekend across the @cleveland metro area. @we are seeing cloud cover this @morning but i guarantee you, @you'll get sunshine later on @today. @grab sunglasses as you are @heading out. @temperatures with the help of @the southerly winds gel going @to be pushing on up. @i'll let you know what to @expect for the second half of
6:14 am
@ @ we are about a month away @from construction projection in @downtown cleveland but the road @closures have already started. @danielle wiggins helps us @minimize the delays. @having a great day. @i know your weekend travel @plans may get you out of your @normal driving routine. @remember carter road closed @this week between columbus road @and the carter road bridge, @this is because of the @reconstruction project, the @preparations for that. @march. @driveway access will be @maintained at all times.
6:15 am
@so you can go ahead and detour @columbus road to get over on @that closure. @now here's more information @about this project that is @beginning in march. @it reconstruct carter road @between scranton and columbus @-- reconstructs carter road @between scranton and columbus @road. @have a great day. @and back to you. @ we should have smooth @sailing at least for the next @two days. @ today going into sunday is @great late sunday evening. @i would say if a lot of people @were out of town and coming @back in sunday night, they may @hit some rain. @>> changes are coming. @>> it hasn't been too bad for @us this morning.
6:16 am
@at this hour, you are going to @find temperatures are fairly @reasonable. @seven above freezing right now. @we have kept it fairly quiet @not too much to speak of on our @satellite view. @we'll absolutely see sunshine @later on today. @for most of us though, it is @the southerly winds that are @really starting to move in some @and until that happens things @are going to be quiet across @the region. @39 in youngstown. @29 in mansfield. @we are going to hover right @about here for the next two @hours or so. @before we get the bump up with @the daytime heating. @sunshine for the afternoon, @milder weekend temperatures, @even tomorrow. @then we are going to bring in @colder air come sunday night @into monday morning. @which means the rain that @starts sunday will transition
6:17 am
@expected across the area. @for most of us the planning @purposes right now, be prepared @stepping out. @it is a little on the cool @side. @again not too chilly, we are @hovering right around the @freezing mark by 9:00 and then @a decent spike in temperatures. @by 1:00 or 2:00, many of us @will be well into the upper 30s @to near 40 degrees by later on @this afternoon. @hour by hour we break it down @into the afternoon mainly clear @skies, plenty of sunshine by @3:00 later though, early on @your sunday morning, we are @still not seeing the rain @arrive yet. @and the temperatures tonight @terribly low. @just upper 20s to near 30 @degrees. @then the changes come. @ahead of the next system well @he bring in -- we'll bring in @rain. @48 for dover. @we'll see close to the middle @40s and fairly comfortable @headed into the evening hours @for your game watching.
6:18 am
@later, watch for the moisture @to move on in. @from west to east. @as we get into the early @morning hours, this is monday @morning, some of those rain @showers will transition into @snow showers and a wintry mix @even in some areas. @so could be a little bit of a @challenging commute on monday @morning for some of us. @so for today, cloudy and cold. @temperatures hit around 40 @degrees later on this afternoon @and we'll keep in a lot of @sunshine late in the day. @and clearing skies into the @overnight. @your window nation forecast is @definitely going to feature @changes coming our way. @that is on monday, the day to @watch. @we bring in the rain, then the @rain snow mix and then we could @actually see maybe two, three @inches of accumulation. @>> the snow and cold is coming @back. @>> thanks olga. @ this morning we protect @your entire home or business @with a bargain.
6:19 am
@the savings to scare off any @intruder. @>> reporter: great to be with @you this weekend. @you do not need me to spout out @statistics about crime in @northeast ohio. @i will tell you if you feel you @need to heighten the level of @security on your property, the @deal i found today, the @absolute lowest price of the @season. @take a look. @i want to show you of all the @systems i have scouted, my @favorite system today gets you @four cameras, complete with a @dvr, a simple hook up process @and instant intruder alerts in @the event the movement is @detected. @one of the other things that @stood out with regard to the @security system the night @vision camera. @these cameras durable, weather @proof, i love at night in pitch @black they were able to detect @movement at up to 80 feet away. @the $279 deal amazon has on

@ good morning, what a friday @for johnny manziel. @one thing after another @yesterday, let's recap the @day's events. @dallas police announced last @night they are launching a @criminal investigation into a @domestic violence assault @complaint filed against @manziel. @they received an assault @complaint yesterday for the @january 30th incident we know @involved his ex-girlfriend @colleen fowler. @manziel is listed as the @suspect. @they are reopening its @investigation after receiving @the complaint. @detectives will investigate the @case to determine what criminal @charges, if any, will be filed. @also yesterday a judge signed a @protective order keeping johnny @manziel away from fowler and @ordered manziel to pay $12,000 @in legal fees. @ now to the comment @yesterday from his father, paul @manziel to the dallas morning @news that opened eyes @yesterday. @quote i truly believe if they
6:29 am
@live to see his 24th birthday. @manziel turns 24 in december. @manziel's father failed twice @this past week to get johnny @into rehab. @on tuesday manziel was admitted @to a psychiatric and chemical @dependency hospital, but he was @allowed to leave. @even though his father believed @he was suicidal. @also yesterday manziel's agent @eric burkhardt cut ties with @manziel, with deep regret @saying it has become painfully @obvious that johnny's future @rests solely in his hands. @the browns' owner said the @browns have been unsuccessful @in their attempts to reach @manziel. @they are not worried about @manziel the player but the @person. @ now let's move on now to @josh gordon and nfl @commissioner roger goodell held @his super bowl press
6:30 am
@he will look at how gordon has @conducted himself over the last @several months and gordon has @to convince goodell that he @won't slip up again if he is @going to be reinstated. @>> i'm hopeful that josh @understands that he is going to @have to conduct himself @differently going forward to be @a member of the nfl and to be @representing the cleveland @browns for any team in the nfl. @>> reporter: the cavs back home @tonight after their five game @winning streak. @the cavs are taking big steps @backward, losing for the second @straight time last night. @>> lebron & co. @ready to go. @lebron with a strong early take @a 13-2 lead. @speaking of strong take, you @know kevin love wanted revenge @against the celtics. @big night for j. r. smith. @20.5 triples. @but here's the bad news.
6:31 am
@left thigh bruise, left the @game, didn't come back. @he said it was painful. @he hopes to play tonight but @again he did not come back into @last night's game. @lebron a big fourth quarter. @the cavs led by five with 18 @seconds left. @but they give it up and avery @bradley all they had to do was @stop the three point and he @hits it. @the game winner at the buzzer @and the cavs lose 104-103. @they are 35-14. @akron hosting central michigan. @freshman josh williams for @22 points. @they win 92-87. @coming. @the indians packed up the
6:32 am
@pitchers and catchers report on @february 17th, full squad on @the 21st and the first game is @march 1. @ how about a super bowl @prediction? @most people going with @carolina. @panthers favored by five and a @half points. @but i say this. @peyton manning rides out into @the sun set, i guess you could @say, with his second super bowl @and the defense holds true for @denver and the broncos win 23- @20. @ hope you have a great super @bowl weekend everybody. @>> i don't know about that @dave. @ just ahead new movies are @hitting the big screen this @weekend. @we have a look at your box @office preview coming up. @first olga and i think the @panthers are going to pull this @one off right? @>> i am hopeful. @we are looking at a pretty @decent day today. @variable clouds from mostly @cloudy to partly sunny.
6:33 am
@consistent the west winds maybe @even hitting low 40s by later @on this afternoon. @i'll let you know when big @changes are on the way for us.
6:34 am
@ @ if you have a hard time @getting up in the morning you @can blame your dna. @a new study found 15 genes that @can make us either a night owl @or an early riser. @over 90,000 people were @surveyed. @researchers found older adults @tend to be morning people @compared to those under 30. @early risers are less prone to @depression and slimmer than @night owls. @a gene involved in body weight
6:35 am
@their best in the morning or at @night. @i'm only an early riser because @i have to. @>> but unfortunately, you know, @i'm not slimmer. @>> well i'm definitely a night @owl. @>> are you? @>> oh yeah. @in fact i'm pretending today is @last night so i can do this job @in the morning. @ we are going to have, i @think, a pretty nice afternoon @here. @we are starting out on the @chilly side this morning, and @we are going to push away most @of our cloud cover by midday. @so the southwest winds, the @daytime heating, all of that is @going to factor in, and make @this a pretty decent saturday. @take the jacket with you. @you definitely need to cover a @couple of layers as you step on @outside. @you'll be shedding at least one @or two of those. @we are quiet on the radar and @it is going to stay that way @until sunday evening, sunday @night.
6:36 am
@sitting in the middle range @20s. @a few upper 20s for akron @canton. @31 for youngstown. @but we are going to spike that @up later on with the southwest @winds about 10 miles per hour. @sunshine will come out, mild @temperatures not only today but @for tomorrow as well. @then we are going to see a @return of that cold, that @february winter weather will be @back. @when the moisture moves in, we @are going to see the @opportunity if a little bit of @snow accumulation come monday @and tuesday. @here's what you need to know to @get your day started, a mix of @sun and clouds well established @into the 30s. @then later on, i think most @locations will at least hit the @upper 30s. @a couple of locations have the @opportunity to hit 40, 41. @so a nice saturday indeed. @hour by hour with our future @view, i paused it at 3:00. @temperatures already pushing 40 @degrees by then.
6:37 am
@you can expect about the @freezing mark early on your @sunday morning. @if you are heading out, make @sure you take the umbrella with @you, clouds move in we'll start @to see rain showers north and @westerly by that 3:00, 4:00 @hour. @better chances for the wider @spread area after sunset. @we'll pop showers late into the @evening as temperatures drop, @the rain transitions to snow. @this will be a little tricky @for you when you head into the @monday commute. @a mix of sun and clouds, @tonight we are going to drop @our temperatures back. @with the snow accumulation, we @are not looking at too much @coming our way just about an @inch or two. @looks good for today and for @tomorrow. @46 degrees.
6:38 am
@get the wind shift more north, @northwest winds, we are going @to get more cold and bring in @snow. @our best chance of seeing that @accumulating snow is going to @be on monday into tuesday. @ thank you olga. @ new movies are hitting the @big screen this weekend. @>> reporter: the golden age of @hollywood in hail caesar. @this fully loaded cast includes @josh brolin, george clooney. @it is rated pg-13. @jane austin rolls over in her @grave in pride and prejudice @and zombies. @this finds elizabeth bennett

@ @ you know you have done it. @how the snooze button can @impact your dreams. @ and viewers weigh in with @the most romantic spots in @cleveland @ @ so olga, i might need to

@off? @>> reporter: by afternoon, @very happy. @today we are pushing the @temperatures up and the @southwest winds are going to @hit solid upper 30s to close to @40 degrees. @tomorrow even warmer than @middle and upper 40s. @we are going to end the weekend @get, but around 9:00 or 10:00, @sunday night, that is when the @rain starts to come in. @as the temperatures drop we are @going to transition to this @yucky wintry weather. @not going to be pleasant. @>> you just want to stay in the @present right now. @ thank you olga and thank @you for watching. @be sure to tune back in for the @news at 8:30. @remember you can get all your @news weather and sports at
