@ @>>reporter:snow falling down @here in the akron area adding @to what is already on the @roadways. @we will have a check on what @you can expect on your morning @commute down here south of @cleveland coming up.
6:01 am
@making for a messy commute. @>> hollie we started early on @the air at 4 a.m., to show you @how this has been purged -- @progressing, we had 13 i-alert @is and now we have so many @rolling across our screen right @now. @>> we have been tracking the @storm since yesterday, it is @tracking from the south to the @north, john and lynna have been @telling you this is a heavy, wet @snow because temperatures are @hovering right around freezing. @so many large districts are @closed today. @as we zoom in you can see a lot @of this is showing in that @purple color. @that indicates moderate to @heavy snowfall. @akron schools are closed today, @summit county, north canton, @canton local, garfield heights, @willoughby eastlake, dover, new @philadelphia, ashtabula, maple
6:02 am
@hudson, solon, streetsboro all @close today along with canton, @worcester, cuyahoga falls, and @that is just to name a few. @east side of cleveland seeing @snowfall. @although cuyahoga county is not @specifically under this winter @weather advisory. @the snow was coming down at a @moderate to heavy pays. @john and lynna this is a massive @storm. @the winter weather advisory is @in place until 1 o'clock today. @>> thanks so much, hollie. @ snow has been falling south @of cleveland so far this m @orning. @will ujek has been in the akron @area all morning this morning. @it has been a tough drive for @you all morning. @>>reporter: yeah, john, the @snow has been falling all @morning, it has continued and @not to not let up at any @point. @this is 77, 76, and eight and @akron were all of these are
6:03 am
@you can see traffic is moving. @at a pretty decent clip @considering how much snow has @fallen here this morning. @that is because they have had a @lot of plows out and dropping a @lot of salt on the roads. @the weather has been -- the @temperature has been kicking @right around 31-33 back-and- @forth. @that is allowing the soul all @to work down here. @they are seeing some pavement. @but when you get a little @further north on 77, where we @were a little bit earlier. @that is a lot butts -- less @traffic area. @we are in a parking lot that @has been plowed, you can tell @it was plowed a little bit ago. @but not that long ago. @it is adding up very quickly @and akron. @the snow continues to fall. @it is expected to fall here @throughout the next couple of @hours. @just to give you a heads up on @what you are going to be seeing @when you get out and start your @commute if you are headed up @towards north of cleveland,
6:04 am
@have snow on the roads to deal @with early this morning. @>> thank you. @ now let's check in with @tiffany, she is now in chagrin @falls. @what are you finding? @>>reporter:we are driving here @along main street in chagrin @falls, john, you can see the @roads here are pretty slushy and @wet. @more people out this morning in @chagrin, i just got off the @phone with the police @department and i am told they @are not having any issues @because of the snow. @no accidents, or anything like @that. @we have seen a few runners out @here this morning, enjoying the @conditions, if you will. @but so far, really, it's just @been slushy, and slippery here @in chagrin falls. @we've been around all morning, @we were on 480, it's very @slushy and slick there, up to @422 and that we were in @solon. @but this morning just a heavy, @steady snowfall here in chagrin @falls.
6:05 am
@>> thank you. @ now, we want to give you a @look of where many people are @heading toward the downtown @area. @here is along the shore way @where we have seen tons of snow @falling all morning long. @pretty much of the same picture @ever since we have been on the @air starting at 4 a.m. @coming down pretty good there. @danny is keeping an eye on the @roads for us. @>> i sure am. @i promise we will take a look @at the drive into downtown @about a five minute delay on 71 @north just before the inter- @belt bridge. @you just saw the west shore way @and it looks like it's clearing @up as far as traffic, but we @are seeing some @slip -- slow traffic as you are @heading into i 90 on the west @shore way. @the roads are getting a little @clearer so that you can commute @but here's a drive time on the @west shore way between lake @avenue and east ninth street, @four minutes headed east on six @minutes headed west.
6:06 am
@miles per hour, because that @speed dropped a couple weeks @ago. @people are driving a little f @ast. @please slow down out there. @on the east shore way between @the euclid spur a dead man's @curve 12 minutes heading into @downtown and 14 minutes headed @out that is about a five-minute @delay. @coming up at 6:19, we will @check drivetime's on 77 to the @south, because i hear there is @a mess all the way up to the @central interchange. @>> thank you so much for that @report. @we are also looking for your @images this morning through @social media. @visit our facebook page and look @for this post. @you can also send them to me as @well. @some of you enjoying the snow @this morning, lori posted this @image, this is jane and sarah @they are enjoying a snow day, @in the front yard, already. @they have already got the @snowman belt, and it has lights @built into it. @very fancy there and akron. @of course, the snow, heavy, and @wet perfect for making snowmen,
6:07 am
@nice job, guys. @this now is going to stick to @everything but . just be @careful out there. @do not lift too much on your @shovel as you get out this @morning. @here is a look at akron on the @west side, this image from lisa @white, templeton posted on the @facebook page this morning just @after 5 o'clock. @you can send those images to us @by tweeting me or on facebook, @and instagram. @the latest list of closings and @delays now limb -- numbering @over 200 the i-alert system @going strong on @wkyc.com and your wkyc app. @ we are following "breaking @news" this morning in maple @heights pretty family escaped @after their fairway avenue home @, fire early this morning. @we do know one man was taken to @the hospital with burns. @we are working to get an update @on his condition. @another adult, two kids and two @dogs got out okay. @the fire did melt some of the @vinyl on the home next door. @it is not clear what caused the @fire.
6:08 am
@district downtown turns into a @swat situation, at crush @clothing store. @officers responded for shots @fired in connection with a @robbery around 7 o'clock last @night. @the owner came outside and told @police the shooters got away. @four people were taken into @custody for questioning. @police are expected to release @more information today. @ it was supposed to be a @routine procedure. @today, a family hopes to get @some answers after a @tonsillectomy led to their son's @death. @ you get paid to be there @every day, but we all knows -- @we all know sometimes at work @how long does it take to look @-- lose focus? @we have the answer. @ those i-alert are coming on @so fast but i think i just saw @mayfield city schools close @today, beaumont, benedictine,
6:09 am
@drive, it is heavy, wet snow. @we have closings that are well @over 200 at this point. @believe it or not, despite this @morning's mass it will be dry @and quiet as we get into the @evening commute @with temperature steady in the @30s today. @greg and i are looking at that @hour by hour forecast, along @with snow totals and what to @expect. @please let us know, twitter, @facebook what you are waking up @to this morning as we take a @live look outside. @lake catholic high is close @today. @they are adding up fast.

6:12 am
@ @ another live picture here @is our team coverage continues. @you see the snow still coming @down here. @this is in green, 77 near
6:13 am
@it seems like it is never going @to quit. @>> it is that heavy, sticky @snow, that is clinging to tree @branches and everything. @one thing we may want to watch @out for our power outages later. @that heavy, wet snow clinging @to power lines, we will keep @you posted if we have anything. @here is maureen with your @morning newsfeed. @ an autopsy will be @performed today on a 9-year-old @wisconsin boy who died after @having his tonsils removed. @that story topping our morning @newsfeed. @he was given oxycodone and sent @home after the procedure when @his parents gave him a second @dose they had to take them back @to the hospital because he was @having trouble breathing. @days later he was pronounced @brain-dead and removed from @life support. @a sample of that oxycodone is @also being tested. @ after today people will be @able to fly from the us to cuba @for the first time in 50 years. @top us officials are traveling @to havana today to sign an @aviation patch for us airlines @still has to apply for @permission from us regulators @to fly certain roots. only 20
6:14 am
@will be allowed. @ are you having a tough time @concentrating at work. @forbes says according to a @professor at the university of @california. @consistent focus at a time @before becoming distracted. @causes for losing focus include @sleep deprivation, we know @nothing about that here. @poor diet. @chronic stress and too much @computer time and a bad work @environment. @keep that in mind in case you @start to drift off at work. @>> see, now i feel good because @i just filled out my review and @i told my boss i am good for @far minutes of focus. @i am ahead of a game -- ahead @of the game. @>> you are going to get an a+ @on that. @>> what did you say? @>> you are not paying attention. @>> holly, and greg moore @closings are still coming in. @it is mostly the south and @eastern counties? @>> yeah, we are really seeing a @ton, one of our biggest i-alert @morning so far this year.
6:15 am
@images which you should @continue to send, 84-6 inches @toward akron/canton. @>> we love the pictures. @we appreciate you. @greg will be showing those off @and we will be talking totals @in just a second. @first, we will get you out the @door. @those of you that have school @today and some of you do @indeed. @that is so sweet if you are @helping mom and dad doing a @little shoveling. @be careful, this is a heavy, @wet snow. @temperatures hovering right @around freezing but we have @been steady at 32 degrees since @4 a.m. @this morning. @a snowy morning drive is @definitely the headline along @with varying accumulation. @it depends on where you are this @morning. @temperatures are actually @quite nice this morning. @it will be, march -- much more @scattered by 9 a.m.
6:16 am
@we are just overcast. @that is why the tallies will be @happening, and things like @that. @we have been tracking the storm @system overnight while you have @been a sleep. @and it's all coming out of the @south. @temperatures, like i said, @those low 30s that is a huge @part of this. @it has been a moderate to heavy @wet snow now consistently for @the past several hours. @as we zoom in, this is medina, @summit, portage counties all @just constant, steady snow as @we go a little further south @into stark county, the same @thing in canton up to the north @any side of cleveland, mayfield, @lyndhurst, lake county you are @not under any kind of @advisories. @you're definitely seeing snow @into geauga county, we have @winter weather advisories for a @lot of you.
6:17 am
@today. @>> the heaviest of the snow @falling right during the @morning commute. @cleveland there may not be @allowed, certainly by our snowy @standards but it's just falling @at the wrong time. @the consistency just not making @travel very easy. @it's all about the temperatures @this morning for a check that @temperature outside your window. @33-34, is a 32-31, maybe even @lower like ashtabula 29. @everything is stickier, and @sticking and that's now that @snow a little bit drier versus @cleveland and worcester where @we are in the low 30s. @now, take a look at the radar @because i have been noticing a @trend there, the back edge of @the snow may slowly now be @starting to push toward @cleveland. @places like norwalk and @mansfield you will be clearing @out in the next 30 minutes. @that will move into ashland and @lorain county and maybe @eventually cleveland, @eventually that will be after 8 @o'clock, after 9 o'clock with @most of us already driven on
6:18 am
@total snowfall, this is going @to be a little deceiving. @i think places like @akron/canton down towards dover @and carrollton. @you will probably get f our-8 @inches of snow. @when you go out and measure it @it will measure four-five, it @is so heavy and so wet it is @getting compacted down. @hollie, does warm up and that @extended forecast. @i think that something everyone @wants to hear about. @ the silver lining, and we @have it. @great, you are just showing @that back edge of snow and that @trend continues to midmorning. @i 10:30 a.m. @most of you are snow free with @leftover flurries with the main @batch being out of here. @that is into the afternoon. @we are totally dry. @we will get a look at your @window nation seven day @forecast. @talk about that warm-up for @later in the week which is so @impressive. @in the meantime 30s today with @morning still likely. @tomorrow we will have some on @and off snow showers. @nothing like what we are @dealing with today. @32degrees. @everything looks good, partly
6:19 am
@and then hello to a mild @springlike friday. @upper 40s to near 50 with ranger @track later in the day. @we are in the 40s for this @upcoming weekend. @it is 6:18, we are checking your @drive. @ hi there, it is a slow go @throughout northeast ohio this @tuesday morning. @thank you for letting us start @your day. @i have a tweet from rogers who @says can you please focus more @on southern areas this morning @since it is getting more snow @than cleveland. @i want to let you know i am @focusing on all of the area @because we are all getting @snow. @i will focus on 77 as i said to @the south, we are seeing slow @traffic through summit, stark, @and tusk of rs county on 77. @in fact here 77 south of the
6:20 am
@incident right here, and slow @traffic, as well as not clear. @the roads are not very clear @that is why you are seeing that @slowing on 77 between arlington @and 76, this is typically a @five minute commute. @headed north it is a 10 minute @commute and headed south it is @an eight minute commute. @again, double your drive times @if you are traveling to the @south. @look at this picture at mount @pleasant street, you can barely @even see, no road tracks on 77 @per this is near the a @kron/canton airport. @77 between canton -- akron and @canton. @those are typically a 20 minute @drive. @back to you. @>> thank you, danny @ my biggest winners this @week is all about random acts @of kindness week but you're @going to meet a can state @student who does us for @complete strangers all year @long. @a lot of it is money out of her @own pocket. @that stories coming up.
6:21 am
@window, i swear to you, we do @not plan it this way. @we are calling this summer @sweetness. @i thought, you know, in @february, middle of the month @it would be a nice to take -- @it would be nice to take a look @back at summertime. @linda from garfield heights was @thinking the same thing when @she sent in this photo. @there you have it. @on a snowy commute, we have a @look at summer to brighten your @morning. @>> thank you, linda.

@ @ a live look at road @conditions at the central @interchange in akron were @heavy, wet snow has been @falling all morning long. @danny has been tracking a @number of delays on the roads @this morning. @hollie and greg with live team @with a coverage coming up as

@ time for my biggest winners @and biggest losers. @i am going to use the word @darling, and dazzling. @i have to use the word darling @because that is his name. @scott darling the backup @goaltender for the chicago @blackhawks for the get the save @of the night. @the maple leaves with a great @chance to score, wide open that, @but he makes the sprawling @saber and we're going to take @another look at this. @you need to appreciate the @goaltender. @it's a tough position to play. @look at how he will just jump @in front of it, and make the @big save right there. @dazzling. @impressed by that play. @thank you for playing along. @darling is a as a backup, he @had 35 saves, blackhawks win @seven-two that was the best @save of the night. @we need to watch more hockey @ my biggest winner is known @for her random acts of kindness @all year round not just the w @katie campbellton is a junior

@rebate forms and sells her own @clothing so she can use the @money to buy gifts for children @for the holidays. @she also donates clothing to @metrohealth for victims of @rape. @she has donated food and @supplies to secondhand moms of @tremont. @she likes to go out and buy @coffee and lunch for someone @who is waiting in line. @her quotes, i want to live in a @world where people like risky @behaviors like smiling a lot @and doing nice things even for @complete strangers. @thank you, katie, for all you @are doing to make the world a @better place. @a junior in college, doing all @of that year round. @>> way to go. @>> don't you smile when you @hear that? @>> absolutely. @she is a true leader. @>> it's contagious, katie, and @thank you hopefully more and @more will catch on to your @spirit. @ we have a snowpacked @morning commute, and the good @news is things will be winding @down as we had to @midmorning by lunch time it is @a few flurries, if anything, @and then just overcast skies @later today.
6:27 am
@day, on our travel map the @storm system coming right out @of the south trade with @them but you're so close to the @freezing market has been a @heavy, wet snow. @we are at over 300 closing on @delays on i-alert this morning. @we will continue to keep you @informed. @they continue right over your @commercial break area 6:26. @-- break.

@central interchange of akron as @the heavy wet snow continues to @fall. @akron public schools one of @more than 300 schools and @districts deciding to close, or @delay the start of classes @today. @live team coverage straight @ahead. @ let's check in with hollie, @the popular question, once you @get through the morning rush is @when is it going to and? @>> the afternoon is fine. @you can all take a deep breath @knowing that your commute home @from work and school, for those @of you that have it, is going @to be entirely different than @what we have going on this @morning. @storm system from the south, @the good news is we were able @to really track this from @yesterday, and now, okay, it's @coming. @we have been with you since 4 @a.m. @this morning keeping you up-to- @date with the latest. @we continue to see a moderate @to heavy snow across much of @northeast ohio. @west and east, and sell for @south for that matter. @the school closings and delays @definitely confirming all of @that. @through the akron area, has
6:32 am
@has lightened up a little bit @since the last hour, but still @study as can be. @and also into medina and @portage counties. @you will notice that things are @just snow filled from @countyline to county line. @not so much of the -- the @problem is the timing of all of @this this morning. @it's a busy time as we are @trying to get to work and @school. @canton is getting snowed on and @as we head up to the north and @east side of cleveland has been @getting a @consistent snow into geauga and @also lake county where mentor @schools are closed today. @you can clearly see the back @edge of this. @i do think within the next @little while we will start to @see improving conditions from @west to east. @our just in tab flashes and @read, as you can see, we @continue to get more closings @and and again just an overview @of the storm system as a @continues to pull off towards @the north and east. @danny has a lot going on with
6:33 am
@ yes, we do need to take it @slow, i just got off the phone @with strongsville police they @say there's a jack knifed semi- @on 71 southbound after 82 rural @10 road area police are @responding to this crash. @you are starting to see that @slow traffic 71 south, that @average speed 31 miles per @hour, that is a five-minute @delay through that area. @here is a picture on 71 at 82, @you are not seeing the jack @knifed semi- in this picture, @and cars are getting by fine. @it looks like it is clearer @towards the middle of the @highway. @again, give yourself extra time @this morning. @the drive time on 71 between @strongsville and turnpike 18 @minutes headed north and 16 @minutes headed south. @that is typically a 15 minute @commute. @do not let that drive time fool @you, you want to give yourself @extra time. @also we have an accident
6:34 am
@north, we are seen stop and go @traffic on 77 through summit @county and stark county give @yourself extra time. @i am tweeting out drivetime's @right now. @ let's take you there, the @akron/canton area one of the @areas hardest hit by snow this @morning. @>> will ujek has been out in @it. @is it letting up at all where @you are? @>>reporter:no, it will change @then to heavy depending on the @time but it continues to come @down as it has all @morning long. @the good news is for people in @akron they were prepared for @this. @the plows have been out. @they have been putting down salt @as well. @the difference though is on the @on and off ramps compare to @being on the interstate. @as danielle mentioned, you can @see behind us this is the @interchange right there at @eight north she mentioned @getting back up there. @that is because is it is a -- @it is an on and off ramp where @it seems to be more dicier.
6:35 am
@nice lane group that you get @things are backed up. @some of this completely stopped @here for a while. @you want to avoid it if you can @come our just know about is @you can leave a little bit @earlier. @you can see traffic moving this @way, completely fine right now. @they are moving at a decent @speed considering how much snow @has fallen here. @a couple of inches when you get @a little bit further on 77 @north, some places pack @tempered but a lot of time you @can find that lane and get in @and keep going. @let's check in on how things @are over on the east side i was @somethings over to tiffany @hartley and chagrin falls. @>>reporter:good morning, you @give us a vantage point of what @traffic, people out there on @the road roads. @we decided to get out of the @live truck this morning here in @better idea of what some of the @this morning. @you can see/and snow covered @here. @at times, kinda fishtail. @you want to make sure that you
6:36 am
@back over here to the sidewalk @one thing we are noticing out @here, of course is snow- @covered, snowpack, people have @not been out. @you can see that this fire @hydrant here, there is no all @around it. @when you are out, this morning @and you are trying to keep up @with it, shovel your driveways, @your walkways would you want to @make sure that you get all of @the snow, around the fire @hydrant as well. @we are going to be making our @way back over to 422 to show @you what it looks like there @hopefully by 6:15. @ we are staying on top of @the forecast, course we will @keep you updated throughout the @morning if you @haven't already done so sign up @for our i-alert to have our @school closings or delays sent @to your mobile device just go @to wkyc.com/closings. @now here is maureen with your @morning newsfeed @ while we have been dealing @with snow, sleet, and called @this morning, the west coast is @dealing with record-setting @heat waves for the national @weather service says it was 89

6:39 am
@the good news. @we go from the snowy commute @this morning to a more or less @dry, and quite commute for @later on today. @we will explain everything in @between. @we have live team coverage, @greg is going to look at some @snow total potential and what's @ahead for the rest of your week @area 6:39.
6:41 am
6:42 am
@ @ live pictures here, the @snow is really coming down now. @these are our live pictures and @green this morning near @arlington road overlooking 77. @traffic is moving, obviously it @is slower than normal. @but, again, the roads are @snowpacked and there is a lot @of that snow coming down. @we are also keeping an eye on i @alert, now more than 300 @cancellations and delays this @morning.
6:43 am
@richmond heights local schools, @akron monastery, communion of @saints, gilmore academy, ratner @schools and cuyahoga county is @close because of no heat. @keep an eye on this, holly has @been great about tweeting out @any closings. @we have them scrolling at the @bottom of the screen. @we also have them online for @you in case you want to double @check before you keep the kids @home, make sure that your @school is close we have it on @wkyc.com. @greg and hollie over to you @ thank you so much, we @realize that a lot of you look @at your phones, first thing. @we try to tweet them, say them, @facebook them. @>> this is one of those @mornings where the list of @schools open may be shorter @than the list of schools close. @>> we will do exactly that, and @speaking of schools we do have @your bus stop forecast which @many of you are going to school @today, we do take a look, @temperatures have been hovering @in the low 30s. @it continues to flash and read @this morning.
6:44 am
@paying attention to what is @happening, and we will keep you @updated with the very latest, @as well. @as we get a look at the @headlines, for today, it is @going to be a snowy morning @drive with varying @accumulations. @greg will have more on what we @expect as far as numbers. @and then we have this warm up @late in the week that is just @impressive. @wait until you see. @in the meantime, it has been @consistently very warm, this @morning. @we are hovering close to @freezing. @that is why the snow is heavy @and wet, by afternoon, a lot of @you have been asking how that @commute looks? @much better. @same thing for this evening, it @will be dry and we receive the @back edge of this as we take a @look at our storm system @tracking out of the south, as @we zoom in closer you can see @that it has been consistently @snowing now for several hours
6:45 am
@and south into akron and canton. @we have had numerous closings @because of it. @and it's timing, so much of it @this is the morning drive, go @to school time, and you can see @the snow that continues to fall @through akron. @although it has lightened up a @bit. @geauga county, a lot of @closings through geauga county. @west geauga schools are closed, @mentor schools are close. @i get tweets about treacherous @road conditions around mentor @right now. @enter weather advisory for a @lot of you through 1 o'clock @this afternoon. @temperatures have been such a @big part of this equation, as @we have been talking about it @is a heavy, wet snow. @we are hovering close to @freezing in some spots. @as you are driving through, @it's also the type of snow that @will really be difficult to @shovel. @please approach this very @carefully. @that shovel is going to weigh @three-four times as -- more @than that lake effect snow we @got a couple of weeks ago. @the snow is loaded with water.
6:46 am
@there because it rained earlier @before the snow actually fell. @there is the later of water @underneath the snow. @it is very dangerous to shovel. @here are some good trends that @i'm seeing on the radar. @earlier this morning we were @seeing these dark purples, @cuyahoga lake county. @they are gone. @the intensity has decreased. @trend number two that i am @seeing is also good for many of @us. @the back edge of the snow now @moving through ashland and that @is going to stop very quickly @now in lorain and ashland c @ounty. @wayne homes, medina county your @next uneven cleveland we will @see this begin to clear out h @ere. @in fact, let's see if we can @actually track this. @let's say 30 miles an hour @moving to the east we will @track this through northeast @ohio. @cleveland just before 8 @o'clock, the heaviest of the @snow comes to an end. @akron after eight, and the @lines closer to 9 o'clock. @here's a closer look at @cleveland down towards akron @and the heavier snow.
6:47 am
@towards west philadelphia snow @developing around portions of @carrollton. @here is a look outside. @everywhere you look, garfield @heights, mayfield, akron/canton @everyone is seeing slush on the @roadways. @danielle will be updating any @accidents or delays that she @sees. @difficult snow to measure, @because you may get six-10 @inches of snow in places like @akron, but because the snow is @so heavy and wet, that s ix-8 @inches may compact down to four- @5 inches and that may be how @much you are ending up to clear @off your driveway and sidewalk. @the warmer weather on the way @as we had through the west of @the week. @hollie has more on that @>> yes, we are going to get to @it, greg mentioned that package @we are seeing a. by 11 a.m. @most of you are still free. @it will happen way before that @for the vast majority of you. @with the exception of a few @flurries it is much quieter @this afternoon.
