korea early this morning. it was launched off the country's east coast. it flew about 300 miles into the sea of japan. we're live in london. what more can you tell us about this missile launch? >> reporter: well, yes, good morning, betty. this is the latest in a series of missile launches by north korea. it's what successful ballistic missile launch so far by the north. a spokes person tells nbc news that the presumed kn 11 submarine launched ballistic missile occurred off the coast of north korea. it was tracked for 300 miles over and into the sea of japan adding that it did not pose a threat to north america. although japan's prime minister

and will deal with it resolutely . it was likely timed as a show of force as a south korean military exercise. we do have breaking news to tell you about. an operation is underway right now by the turkish military aided by u.s. coalition to clear isis along the turkey/syria border. it's just south of where last weekend's deadly wedding attack occurred. turkish and u.s. coalition war planes have carried out four air strikes on the town so far, 63 isis targets have been fired at more than 200 times with artillery and shelling. turkey special forces have entered syria as part of this mission. now to china. an investigation is underway

tremors have been felt. the first recorded outside the town of norcia which is about 100 miles away from rome so that gives you the stretch of where these tremors could be felt. multiple aftershocks and as you see right there in these live pictures, people still trying to rescue those trapped underneath the rubble. so far we understand by local media that at least 13 people are dead due to this earthquake. i want to take you back now to cy on the phone. i know it's been a little bit difficult with the situation there, but lucy, are you with us? >> caller: yes. i can hear you just fine. incredibly powerful quake that struck around 6:30 a.m. local time. it was powerful enough to wake me up in rome nearly 100 miles away. right now we are very close to

we have seen rescue crews rushing to the scene, bringing bulldozers trying to bring rescue workers to pull people out of the rubble. officials say there are still people trapped in some of the buildings. entire homes have been razed. that means this is full of tourists who have been visiting staying in these towns and so they're a lot more than they would normally be. there have been casualties reported. we're probably not going to get the full scale of the devastation until all of the bodies have been recovered from being trapped under the rubble. >> all right. we're having a little difficulty hearing you. obviously service is being affected by the devastation that we're seeing on our screen right
