you're headed out the door anytime soon, michael is here to tell you you need that umbrella. >> yes. >> and i guess we've seen some lightning strikes too. >> absolutely we've seen some lightning strikes. and, again, it's one of those welcomed things it's wel -- as you may notice it's the welcomed rainfall. let me get you right to radar and show what you things look like. it's just a thin strip of showers and thunderstorms moving through cuyahoga county as we speak. so let's take you right the cleveland metro. again, from cleveland down towards akron, that's currently where we're tracking those showers and a couple of thunderstorms in the mix. nothing severe at this point, but you will if you're just stepping outside notice the gusty winds out there. if you look closely down towards richfield, right along, say, 71 towards strongsville, you're also seeing not only the lightning, but you're also

projecting all of this to be within the next hour or so, cleveland heights in the next couple of minutes, euclid around, say, 5:10, mentor an lake county in 5:25. leroy at about 5:40, and then just before 6:00 in north madison is when we're expecting the heavier showers and thunderstorms in your neck of the woods. this is round number one. i think around lunchtime we'll see a little lull in activity, even a couple of breaks in the clouds and a few peaks and then by this afternoon there is a very real and present threat that we could see strong to severe storms. we'll talk more about the timing of that for later on this afternoon coming up in the next couple of minutes. maureen, back on over to you >> all right, michael, thank you for those details. now to our top story here. it all started with a disturbing photo from the east liverpool police department posting to social media. maybe you've seen this, showing the true effects of heroin overdoses. then last night in akron police

overdoses at one home. channel 3's hillary goldstein has more on heroin's impact to our community, and we want to warn you, some of these photos are graphic, but so powerful that we felt it was important to share it with you. >>reporter: a former fire scene at chapel hill mall, the pickup truck left mangled after hitting this yellow post, it rolled back wawr, crashed and caught on fire. the man inside had to be pulled from the inferno. >> it's hitting the city hard. >>reporter: a few minutes away in this city of say four adults o.d.ed at the same house. a 3-year-old child went missing from the home while everyone was passed out. >> this is what you're seeing and the children, unfortunately, are one of the biggest victims of that. >>reporter: in this particular incident out of east liverpool, ohio, our biggest victim is very small. the 4-year-old sitting in the back seat helpless, likely stunned and scared. any shouts he might make to try and wake these adults isn't

both o.d.ed on heroin. >> minutes could have meant the difference between how it play out and what could have happened. somebody could have been killed, seriously injured. >>reporter: for this off-duty officer, the adults, the child, they could all be dead. he saw erratic driving, roll down a hill and a a near accident with a school bus. he got help and the pair are alive today. life isn't always the outcome, though. across the nation heroin ods have been on the rise. akron ma in july when 15 people o.d.ed in 10 hours, one fatal. the stats so much more personal when it's the one you love >> for me to lose a good friend on it, i'm just sad. i'm sad. >>reporter: hillary goldstein, channel 3 news. >> hillary, thanks. now to a story we've been following for you, the man who shot and killed a woman after a car crash in sullivan has formally been charged.

counts ranging from aggravated murder and felonious assault. he remains in jail this morning on a $1 million bond. a battle is brewing between the social security administration office in downtown cleveland and its union. earlier this year a company sprayed the building for bed bugs, but it used the wrong pesticide, causing many of the office employees to get sick. union representatives say they asked that the office wait to apply the pesticides on a weekend so that the fumes would have time to clear. >> mr. williams toll them verbally there's also a large e- mail exchange. we absolutely requested no administration of the pesticides during the weekday. >> union reps also say that visitors to the social security office were exposed to the chemicals but never informed. bad news for cavs player shumpearth. the team has confermed he was arrested on suspicion of dui

outside of atlanta. the cavs said in a statement that they have discussed the situation with him and there will be no further comments about the situation. it's possible shumpert could land in the league's treatment policy. he could also face a suspension. a court date has not been set a brunswick farm honors the cavs world championship with a seven-eicher corn maze. mapleside farms in brunswick went all out this year, maybe all in. channel 3's alyssa raymond joins us now with a look >>reporter: that's a good one, mo, you come up with just like that. that's amazing. year after year their corn maze is one of the biggest and best in the midwest, but this year it took it to a whole new level. for the past two weeks people have been visiting mapleside farms just to see this. take a look. there's no mistaking what it says and shows, home grown hero, complete with lebron's face, and to the left you have believe land, and over to the

the owner of mapleside farms says his sons came up with the theme this year form the maze and were told believe land maze is a little easier, but since the home grown hero one was created out of two fields, it might be for the more advanced maze enthusiast. general manager joshua schmidt says the fall fun begins now. >> 311-foot super slide that take us right down into our orchar. of course we have our corn maze, and then pig trains, hay rides, of course, and then we have our jump park and a number of other things. >> also new this season is the billy goat bluff. you can watch these little guys climb up the mountain and mapleside farm is open from 10:00 to 10:00 tonight, and it's princess and pirates weekend, so dressing up is also highly encouraged. now, mo and michael, check this out, the 311-foot super slide josh is wa was talking about. -- joshua was talking about. who did it better?

in washington members of congress sang and prayed on the capitol steps. we all have our own ways of remembering the lives lost that day. this local man pays tribute in a couple of different ways. take a look. for the past five years, bill saban has put this display in his front yard, one flag for every life lost and 50 firefighters' helmets for each state to honor the first responders. >> if we can sit down at the end of the day and lay our head down and say you know what? i did enough today to ma then you did something. >> bill also gives back to our first responders. friday afternoon he delivered pizza to the willowwick firehouse to show his appreciation. sunday night on channel 3 news after the football game, see bill's whole story and why he spent so much time with his display. still ahead this morning, more trouble with samsung. the urgent call for users to stop using the newest phone models. and fighting back, how boxing is helping patients with parkinson's disease.

welcome back. more trouble for samsung this morning. the consumer product safety commission is urging everyone who owns a samsung galaxy note 7 to power them down now and stop using the devices. the warning comes amid recent batteries in the phones catch fire. samsung halted sales of the phones last week. customers who have them can exchange them for another device. an experimental drug for alzheimer's disease is showing early promise. drug maker biojen developed the drug and funded the latest research. the drug was found to significantly reduce plaque in the brain which experts believe play a critical role in the development of alzheimer's. experts are cautious, though, saying the study was too small

benefits. researchershope to have more answers when the study is finished in about three years. and continuing on with your health news, the same sport that many believe contributes to causing parkinson's disease is helping those diagnosed fight back. it's called rock steady boxing. while participants never take a punch, the training is giving them back their lives. senior health correspondent monica robbins takes us to the gym to show us how it works. >>reporter: michelle learned she had parkinson's disease 14 years ago. >> parkinson's has changed every part of my life. >>reporter: at the beginning of the year, she couldn't put on her own lipstick. there was no way she could sweep the floor of her kitchen. the disease robbed her of the ability to make a simple cup of coffee. she spent most of her days in a wheelchair. so how is it possible she can now do this? >> ta-da! >>reporter: she hit the gym.

hitting the heavy bag and left and right jabs at rock steady boxing. husband guy is her corner coach and biggest supporter. >> i couldn't believe that this was the same person that was six months ago couldn't get out of a chair. >>reporter: parkinson's is a neurodegenerateitive disease that gradually gets worse over time. however, research shows movement may reverse symptoms. >> with continuous exercise, they can minimize that, and in many cases for a while, they >> it may be -- i'll come back. >>reporter: not just any movement works. it must exercise both the mind and body an that's where boxing takes a swing >> because they're learning a scale and that scale is really critical to engaging the brain. >>reporter: seeing improvement like michelle's is what gets trainer marie out of bed everyday >> probably because they're not giving into a diagnosis. >>reporter: and michelle is

boxing. i can just see the difference that it's made. >>reporter: monica robbins, channel 3 news. >> the eighth annual parkinson's boot camp takes place today from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the convention center. more than 800 people are expected to attend. rock steady boxing is just one of the many demonstrations planned. just ahead, defending the title, miochit will soon be taking center st what he's doing to prepare for tonight's fight. now here's michael with a check of that forecast. >> maureen, we could see some strong, perhaps even severe storms later on this afternoon. that's why the storm prediction center has put us under an enhanced risk for strong to severe storms mainly between the 3:00 hour and 10:00 hour, already tracking puddles out on the sidewalk for you this morning. we'll talk about when that next round of rain moves on through

the college experience just got better for some students at xavier university. a new pizza atm is now up and running at the cincinnati school. the school has partnered with a french company to install the very first pizza atm in north america. the machines hold 70 pizzas at costs $9 or $10 depending on the toppings. >> where was this when we went to school? >> oh, my goodness. >> you know what i mean? >> i ate so much pizza in college that i probably needed an atm, and yet i did not need an atm. >> right. you definitely kept, like, little caesar's in business for sure. i totally understand. i feel like today might be a good day to grab yourself a pizza and maybe stay inside for a change because with all of

this afternoon, again, i want you to really make sure that you watch things very closely on our wkyc weather app between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. this evening. so, again, strong, perhaps even a few severe storms in the mix. we're also very windy, so on top of the rain you'll certainly notice that wind, and then by tomorrow on sunday not only are we much cooler, but you'll finally notice more sunshine. temperatures currently upper 60lo you right now. you can see where we're seeing those heavier showers and thunderstorms right now. all of this racing towards the northeast at about 40 miles per hour or so. that brings things into mentor by about 5:30. and then around, say, geneva around the 6:00 hour. here's what the bigger picture, though, shows you. so all of this is in conjunction with an area of low pressure and a cold front.

we're seeing some of the storms this morning. but what we're waiting for is this line, it's that cold front that will move through, again, between the 3:00 hour and 10:00 p.m. hour this evening, and with that, that's when we'll see the strong and perhaps even severe storms move into northeast ohio. so something to really make sure that you're watching very closely if you have any plans later on today. for tomorrow, as we mentioned before, we'll be much cooler after that cold front passes. again, much cooler air moving in, and with sunshine. so tomorrow looking a whole lot better in terms of an outdoor day than today. this morning, again still tracking a few of those scattered showers and a few of those thunderstorms. i think that by lunchtime we'll see a little lull in activity, so if you need to get out and about, get a couple of outdoor errands done, go for it. watch what happens at about 3:00 or so, that's when we start to see a few of those heavier showers and thunderstorms begin to develop. and notice that they'll move from the west gradually towards

towards akron-canton, right around the 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. hour is i think when we see the heavy showers and thunderstorms, ashtabula same sort of story. this continues to press on eastward. and i think that by the 9:00 to 10:00 hour most of the heavy stuff begins to thin and fade which is the good news. and it completely moves out of the area during the overnight hours tonight into early tomorrow. we wake up tomorrow morning to more clouds and a couple of isolated sprinkles. tomorrow afternoon wonderful. forecast for today clouds and sunshine with showers and thunderstorms in the mix later on this evening between 3:00 and 10:00 p.m., upper 50s, low- to mid-60s overnight. the seven-day, again, maureen, a very windy afternoon. but look what happens. say good-bye to the 80s, at least for a couple of days. sunday, monday temperatures in the 70s. you are counting down the hours until we get to sunday and those 70s.

volunteers have been working throughout the night doing their part to end hunger. another honor this morning for the city of cleveland, our city has been named the best city to go car free. the number one ranking comes from usa today travel and highlights our rta system. the article says once you arrive in cleveland, you can easily get downtown from the airport using the rail, and then it's easy to get around by foot, bike or the free trolley. it's the urban cycling festival, neopsychel takes place this weekend on the shores of lake erie. greg dee joins us from edgewater to tell us all about it. >>reporter: hey there, everybody, i'm greg dee. this morning at edgewater park, and there's a big festival going on in town this weekend. it's neocycle. i'm joined by mike here. he's from the cleveland sports commission. it all starts today, mike. tell me about what is neocycle? >> so neocycle is the midwest's largest urban cycling festival,

we have six races, but we also have all kinds of other activities going on, whether it's epic yoga or the ultimate air dogs or all kinds of interesting things happening. >>reporter: so the air dogs is not actually bike remented, it's just -- bike related, it's kind of a show with dogs jumping up, catching fridaysbees and jumping into the water. this is what we're doing here, more than just biking. >> absolutely. we have an amazing lineup of live music happening. so we'll have 15 nd today and tomorrow, and just all kinds of vendors and cool activities and food trucks and beer and all kiens of great things happening here at edgewater. >>reporter: you don't have to be a professional bike rider. you don't even have to be a real enthusiast. you could be just someone who likes riding your bike around the neighborhood, this is the event for you. >> absolutely. and tonight we have the night ride which anyone can participate in. there's still time to sign up. we'll send 2,000 bikes out on the east shoreway tonight. we close down the shoreway, of course. >>reporter: no traffic.

afternoon between 3:00 and 10:00 things may light on up. if you're thinking about heading out on the water today, winds from the southwest 15 to 30 miles per hour, kicking up waves around three to five footers out there, so, again, we are going to see some large waves on erie, and, of course, you notice those white caps. so if you were thinking about making it a beach day, let's wait until tomorrow for that. again, very windy with those scattered show thunderstorms in the forecast. tomorrow we're much cooler. temperatures currently upper 60s, low 70s. here's where we're tracking that rainfall for you right now. it's generally racing off towards the northeast. sharden getting wet in the next couple of minutes in the 5:47 hour, towards trumble just before the 6:00 hour. all of this, by the way, right out ahead of a cold front that's positioned to move on through, and it's as that cold front moves through later on this afternoon between 3:00 and

for heavy and strong storms. good news is that clears the area, and by your day tomorrow and sunday we are much cooler and we'll enjoy a whole lot more sunshine to wrap up your weekend. here's what it looks like. this morning tracking a couple of those scattered showers and thunderstorms, a little lull in activity around lunchtime, but at 3:00, that's when some of our western counties start seeing those dark clouds, and then eventually those clouds lead into the scattered showers and thunderstorms. if we do see severe weather, the big main threat with this will be that chance for strong damaging wind gusts through the afternoon. by about the 9:00 to 10:00 hour, most of that begins to clear our viewing region which is the good news, but in its wake we'll see not only the gusty winds, but we'll also potentially see some street flooding. so watch out for it. first thing tomorrow to start off your sunday we wake up to more clouds with an isolated shower threat. however, the clouds begin to thin and fade and so do our
