thank you so much for being with us. relatives and loved once of 9/11 victims will gather today to mark the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks. organizers have planned music and readings to mark the anniversary at ground zero. president barack obama will speak at the pentagon later. hundreds of people are also expected at a ceremony at the shanksville. the 9/11 terrorist attack killed nearly 3,000 people on that day and destroyed the lives of many more since then. jay gray is near ground zero in new york city where memorial services will start late they are morning. >> debris falling from the tower. pitch blackout side because the smoke blocked out the sunlight. >> reporter: 15 years -- >> people started screaming and running and saying, run for

and so we started to run and run. and what was happening is the tower was collapsing. >> reporter: the memories and images have yet to fade, nor has the resolve. >> literally out of the ashes we have rebuilt stronger and taller. >> reporter: in new york, washington and shanksville, there are reminders every day but on this day, the anniversary of the attacks, the nation pauses to remember. and reafirm 2,996 lost. a promise made by firefighters who raised this american flag from the rubble that day. >> the semibalancism of what they did in raising that flag is what resinates with people. >> reporter: the symbol has been lost for more than a decade, only recently recovered and returned to ground zero where it continues to inspire a

forget. >> that was jay gray reporting. for the past five years, back here at home, bill saban has put this display in his front yard, one flag for every life lost and 50 firefighter helmets for each state to honor first responders. coming up, his whole story and why he spends so much time with this display. the annual tunnels to tower's race honors the nation's brave military heros and first responders as well as the sacrifices they have made. alyssa raymond joins us more with this event. >> reporter: good morning. we are in the public square this morning and this tunnel to towers walk and run begins this morning here at at 8:00 a.m. and this is happening across the country. and actually 29 cities

this is their fourth year for the event but this race is named after steven. an off-duty firefighter who got his gear and ran through a tunnel to the towers to help. now proceeds from the race go towards building specialty smart homes for injured service member, one of them is a 27- year-old army sergeant josh stall. he served two tours of duty and was injured by an afghanistan in 2011. the emcee for today's event spoke to him last week. >> what i did was what i chose to do so i can't call it a sacrifice. >> they do. >> i know. >> $70 million says, they do believe that you all have done something great. >> i know. that's why i smile. >> reporter: this is josh's

canton. the foundation has built more than 40 smart homes. this year, they are expecting more than 30,000 people to participate in the race in new york city. we're expecting hundreds more here today. and the race starts over actually on the other corner of the square. we have all kinds of flag up. so many festivities. and there are people here that have been personally touched by the september 11th attacks and we will be talking to th morning. alyssa raymond, channel 3 news. >> alyssa, a great way for everyone to remember. thank you so much. well, as you can see, alyssa had the fleece jacket on. anyone headed out any time soon, looks like you have to bundle up just a little. >> yeah, i think a light jacket is going the to be in order today early on. you will shed that later on today. but headed out to those 9/11 memorial services, the weather

injuries. the authorities are looking into what happened. he is best known for appearing on the ultimate fighter tv series. the race for the white house is a virtual tie between hillary rodham clinton and donald trump in the latest ohio polls. down in akron on saturday, laura trump, only the aldeas daughter-in-law was among a group known as women for trump. the group toured a healther. the clinton campaign responding to the visit pointing out trump's track reported of questionable remarks about women. northeast ohio's largest school district is looking to keep positive momentum going and they're looking for help at the ballot box. saturday, they got together for a kick-off rally. they were there to support the renewing of cleveland school's levy. it cost the owner of a $50,000 house $230.

voting the levy down would decrease taxes though. parents and students say they can see the difference the levy has made. >> it has been a difference in cleveland public schools so the graduation has gone up every single year. the fact that the third grade guarantee which impacts all the buildings has gone up. the fact that more families are coming back to the school system means that people see the difference. >> now i can see a lot of students and more educators are in the district and actual because once i was in middle school, teachers -- >> leaders from cleveland state say that since the original tax passed four years a they have seen measurable improvement in the preparedness of students graduating from cleveland schools. still ahead, he shot president ronald reagan and has been in a mental hospital ever since. why he is now walking free after 35 years.

in brick structures. the injured include a child hurt when a wall collapsed. the number of confirmed zika virus cases caught in florida is holding steady at 56. and there are no new cases, a travel advisory could soon be lifted. the centers for disease control says they could soon lift the travel advisory on september 19th if there are no new locally contracted cases. business owners are anxious for the one business district asking for money to compensate for zika virus' impact. one of the most iconic images of world war ii, a sailor returning from war kisses a 21-year-old dental assistant. it's a part of american history. but sadly, we learned that the woman from this photo has passed away. she didn't know the sailor who thought she was a nurse when he planted that kiss.

tremendously less warmth. 61degrees, fair sky, dew point at 57. in the 70s lately. yesterday we saw nearly an inch and a quarter of rain. and wind gusts up to 54 miles per hour. so there were a couple of limbs down here and there but not a lot of widespread damage but that was a gusty line of thunderstorm. and now the winds out of the northwest, more stiff breeze right there on the lake shore there in burke hour. and look at the temperatures, warmer right near the lake because of the water. however, inland all 50s with the exception of youngstown, they'll probably drop into the 50s before this morning is finished. and the temperatures throughout the midwest, 44 degrees. all the showers and thunderstorms as well to the east of us and south.

low pressure to the north. high pressure to the west. in between, we get that little bit of a flow out of the northwest and that's going to cool us and dry us for the next couple days. but with high pressure, a lot of sunshine across the area. and maybe a couple clouds out there but a very, very pleasant day. we will see the low 70s for high the temperatures. and then we will bounce back into the 80s for your monday. it's going to turn out to be another beautiful sunny day. and then a little bit warmer, yet, almost on the toward midweek. we will see things start off in the 60s on tuesday. but for the next little while, today winds out of the northwest, cool, comfortable temperatures in the 60s. getting into the low 70s today. and again with a lot of sunshine. the forecast, 72, very pleasant. less humid. much cooler. winds out of the northwest today. and mostly sunny skies. 52 and fair sky, open the windows overnight tonight and enjoy the free air conditioning.

>> it was a good two to three weeks before the headache went away. >> reporter: she developed post- concussion syndrome, something that can happen when the right steps aren't taken immediately after injury. >> getting proper advise about how to manage your activity early on reduces the likelihood by 15 to 20% of whether or not you develop post-concussion syndrome. >> reporter: but a new national survey reveals parents don't wa advice. if a child shows symptoms after one week, more than three in four parents say they're likely to the wake their child up throughout the night something doctors say only makes matters worse. >> the memory is going to be worse, their headache is going to be worse, it will get worse if we don't let them sleep. >> reporter: and 84% of parents would ban physical activity but he says if the injury is stable

thank you so much for being with us. there's a terminal tower all lit up in red, white and blue on this 9/11 anniversary. 15 years since 9/11. we will be telling you about the memorials taking place here today locally and how you can help remember all of the victims lost. and of course, our weather is changing a bit. so we want to get straight over for a look at the weather. he is keeping an eye on the forecast. summer is not quite gone yet. >> no, but it feels a lot cooler than what we saw yesterday. it has been such a steamy

each year as we remember the tragedies of september 11th, 2001. but 15 years later, it's easy for the memories to chip away. and one man has used powerful symbolism to remember the reasons why we continue to remember. >> reporter: it's a unique way to memorial rise the lives lost on 9/11. and now 15 years later for soth of the day starting to erode. >> we're slowly forgetting. >> reporter: but bill saban hasn't forgotten. for five years, this display on his lawn has served as a reminder of the 2,977 killed in that single day. each flag representing a victim. and 50 firefighter helmets representing all 50 states, honoring the first responders who sacrificed that day and

so this is just my way of saying, you deserve it, thank you. >> reporter: and it goes beyond just a display in the yard. bill also gives back to local first responders, crisscrossing his part of town, bringing them meals to show appreciation for all they do. >> residents come in and bring them pizza and wings, i say thank you. >> reporter: his work earns praise from the community. >> a lot of honks. a lot of waves and stopping. and people on facebook, people love it. >> reporter: from passers by to some of the first responders he's honoring, folks come from all around to see his work and remember, remember not just lives lost but a lost sense of unity. >> a reminder that, hey, we can get back to that. it doesn't take a tragedy to become one nation again. >> reporter: and judging from the outpouring of support and pride from the community, it looks like it's working. >> if we can sit down at the

down and say, i did enough today to make someone else's life special, then you did something. >> reporter: channel 3 news. >> thank you. a local race honors the country's brave first responders and military heroes as well as remembers the sacrifices that they have made. the annual tunnels to towers race takes flays new york city today but there's -- takes place in new york city today but there's also one happening here. and alyssa raymond has all of the details for us. >> reporter: good morning. they have been the past four years now. and the race today begins right at this corner at the intersection at the public square at 8:00 a.m. so if you haven't registered yet, there's still time, if you're watching and want to participate, you can. this is going on in about 29 different cities throughout the country. and this all began in new york city obviously, 15 years ago. and that was the first race for this because it is named after

the browns are back and they'll take on the eagles today, 1:00 in philadelphia. they are on the big stage finally after a lot of changes in the off-season and a not so good pre-season. awful pre-season actually. speaking of awful, the browns played quarterback since anyone can remember, can rg3 change things here in cleveland? the browns think that he can. but 's nice, he's young, his fifth nfl season but he hasn't played since 2014. he didn't the take a snap last year. he's been through a lot and makes his return today. >> it's exciting and everything i have been through personally in the league, just, you know, it makes you have that emphasis on controlling what you can and focus on what you can. and when you get the opportunity, making the most of it. extremely happy, you know, not

two nights ago after just four innings and returning to cleveland today for further tests on his right forearm. josh tomlin will make the start next week. last week the buckeyes exploded for 77 points. just 48 yesterday as they beat tulsa sparked by the defense. it was a slow start with wild weather to shoot for. only leading 6-3 late 2nd quarter. the game changer, reads this play perfectly, picked off, takes it touchdown, third interception already this season. buckeyes up 13-3. and now under a minute in the first half, rain coming down and tulsa throws another interception. the defense again getting it done. the pick. the first of his career. nice return for a touchdown. buckeyes lead 20-3 at the half. and they force six turnovers. after a 70 minute weather delay, the offense wakes up.

and this is the kind of weather you would expect for football and the browns today. no doubt about it. 45degrees. 64 at charleston. way down south, still in the steamy stuff there in the 70s. even at this hour. and you can see the line of showers and thunderstorms off to the east of us. that is the line associated with the cold front that moved through yesterday. and in its wake, high pressure and those winds coming on in from the northwest, drying us out, cooling us dow beautiful sunday and monday. warming a little bit by midweek. and toward this afternoon, this evening, you're talking about 71 there at 5:30. and tomorrow evening, those temperatures will be a little bit warmer. we will see the 80s, low 80s across most of the area for your monday. and then we will be seeing the mid-80s as we head into the middle of the week. and then things will cool down again. and for the rest of today, look at this, the winds out of the northwest, mostly sunny skies

sacrifices that they have made. alyssa raymond has more on this event. good morning, alyssa. >> reporter: good morning, maureen. a little bit ago before the break, you saw the fire department raising the american flag. and this is going to act as a symbolic start and finish line for this race. this is the fourth year the city has participated and it goes back 15 years. the race is called the steven seller tunnel to towers race. it's a 5k run and walk. is mark phillip, the race director. and mark, just from the beginning, who is steven? >> steven was a new york city firefighter. 15 years ago today, getting off duty in the morning, going to play golf with his brothers, heard about the plane hitting the world trade center. turned his vehicle around, tried to race to the scene, was blocked by the traffic in the brooklyn battery tunnel. grabbed about 60-pounds of of fire gear from the vehicle and

world trade center. hence the tunnel to towers run was born after that tragedy. and the family wanted to do something in his honor and the honor of the other first responders that died that day and all the people that were in those towers. so so they created the tunnel to towers run. four years ago, 2012, the foundation decided to branch out and do satellite runs across the condition rhode island we were selected to be the ohio country. and we were selected to be the ohio tunnel to towers run. >> reporter: one of 29 cities now. >> yes, 28 cities plus new york. the new york run is in two week, probably 30,000-plus people will participate in new york city. >> reporter: you already have more than 500 registered today but can people still if they're watching rite now come down and participate? >> yes, registration opened at 7:00. we will be open 'til the race starts at 8:00.

been waiting for that. well, today marks the 15th anniversary of september 11th. on saturday in new orleans, firefighters climbed 110 fight flights of stairs to honor those killed rescuers survivors as the twin towers crumbled. here's their story. finally this morning, we have a child who has conquered the internet with her sugar high. look at this face. she really loves cotton candy and she has become the cutest internet sensation. her name is betricks. she's 3 years old and her four seconds on television during put a smile on her face. and we're told this is the first time she ever had cotton candy. my goodness, she's still awake. i don't know when this the game was but i'm going to guess she's still on the sugar high. makes you want to give a 3-year- old cotton candy. >> my goodness. i wonder what she was like coming off the high. >> yeah. coming off our high temperature, if you will.
