kerry coleman, who is keeping an eye on the weather for us. there were moments overnight that it was really coming down hard? >> it really was. there is nothing like a nighttime thunderstorm but when you have to drive through it, a little bit different matter. a lot of ponding off onto the east. 71 degrees and it is a muggy 71, with the dew point there at 67 degrees. and it is going to turn out to be a soggy saturday for you. the warm and humid stuff is going to stick nd with showers and thunderstorms a good bet until then. as we look at radar, look at the batch of thunderstorms, tracking off into lake erie and across portions of lake county, ashtabula county. that is just the start of it. there is a lot more rain to the west of us, headed this way. and we are going to have that chance for showers and thunderstorms at about anytime today and overnight tonight into sunday. those temperatures muggy, 60s and 70s here across the area.

thunderstorm there, in fact you will see thunderstorms out on the lake. and it is going to be choppy there with winds out of the south at about 15 knots. when can we shut off the rain? maureen, it will eventually, but not today. thanks for that update. now to our top story we have been following. the man, suspected of being on drugs whether he hit and killed a state trooper on i-90 is scheduled to be in court this morning. meanwhile, his family, his friends and people who don't even know him are tribute. channel 3's alyssa raymond joins us with a look at how trooper kenneth veliz is being remembered. >> reporter: good morning maureen, veliz's family and friends say he was an amazing person and questions catted to his job. no one probably knew this better than the ones who looked up on to him most, his three children. his youngest son, christian veliz plays football for

county funeral home. ohio state highway patrol, lorraine, cleveland, elyria, amherst and avon police accompanied the procession. as we already mentioned, the man police say is responsible for the crash that killed trooper veliz is expected to be in court this morning. coming up at 6:30, more details on what we know about him. alyssa, such a touching tribute,. well a cleveland police officer has been the 2015 shooting of an unarmed teenager. patrolman allen beaufort is facing negligent homicide charges in the death of brandon jones, patrolman beaufort was indicted friday on misdemeanor charges of negligent homicide and will remain on restricted duty pending the verdict in the case. brandon's mother said it is a long road to justice but she is willing to fight. >> i didn't want it rushed because it is so important to me that my son get justice.

and that's what we have to do. >> reporter: attorneys on the case tell us they believe the amount of publicity on recent shooting cases of unarmed black men have helped to raise awareness for the grand jury to make their decision. an about face from donald trump, who admitted he thinks president obama was born in the united states. he made the comment at an event trump then falsely claimed that hillary clinton started the birther movement in 2008. but clinton and her campaign never made that claim during the election. president obama brushed aside trump's comments. >> we've got other business to attend to. i was pretty confident about where i was born. >> after trump's comments, hillary clinton demanded an apology on behalf of president obama. hillary clinton will make an appearance on the tonight

tried to go in last night. dramatic images of first responders in action that are taking us into the trenches of a deadly growing epidemic in this country just as the federal government is launching a new initiative to curb the opioid crisis that claims tens of thousands of american lives every year. nbc's pete williams reports. >> reporter: when a cleveland, ohio wo behind the wheel of a car she feared the worst. >> i was thinking what can i do. >> reporter: she posted these pictures after police responded, suspected a heroin overdose and gave life saving medication. a scene disturbingly similar to what ohio police recently posted. a couple passed out in a car of a suspected overdose with a 4- year-old in the back seat. the drug enforcement

people die each year from heroin overdoses and overdose deaths are three times what they were in 2010. one reason street suppliers are mixing in the drug fentanyl, because it is cheaper but it is 50 times stronger. now the justice department is launching a new push against doctors who overprescribe painkillers. >> if you debt addicted to a prescription pill it gets real expensive to replace that on the street. heroin is plentiful and cheap and deadly. >> reporter: the nation's police feel overwhelmed nwisconsin officer chad wood man tells addicts reform or face death. >> getting people off of the street and out of their environment and placed into a safe environment is rare. it is incredibly difficult. >> reporter: 34 states now have laws giving legal immunity to people who call 911 to report overdoses and to the victims

cleveland street. pete williams, nbc news, washington. thousands of items were collected from outside the pulse nightclub in orlando. the orange county regional history center spent friday morning collecting and documenting thousands of items left after the june 12th massacre. some of the items were left behind as the city plans to install a new, commemorative fence next week. >> it is difficult. and we feel the import of what collecting people's emotions. >> reporter: the history center says each item will be categorize and photographed for a digital collection. the new apple iphone 7 is flying off the store shelves. thousands across the country camped out to just get their hands on it. in the meantime, competitor samsung is asking customers to keep their hands off the new galaxy note 7, because the battery can overheat and cause

child's concussion even worse. >> kids lay low, sit in a dark, quiet room and that may actually hinder their recovery. >> reporter: a new study came up with eye opening numbers. most parents are relying on misconceptions and old school thinking that could prolong symptoms. more than 75% of parents across the country say they wake their kid up multiple times during the night to check on them after a concussion. doctors say this is just one of the things that parents are doing that could be slowing recovery. >> staying on a good sleep schedule is really important to helping the brain recover from the head injury. throughout the daytime you actually want them to be up and active. >> reporter: the study found parents are going too far in restricting activities like exercise and time on electronic devices. doctors say isolating a child may lead to depression or anxiety, making matters worse. monitor them but take off the

now to our top story, the man that police say is responsible for causing a fatal accident that killed a state trooper is scheduled to be in court this morning. good morning alyssa. >> reporter: good morning maureen. his name is joshua gasper. he was driving under the influence of drugs when he hit and killed trooper kenneth veliz on gasper is charged and scheduled to be in court this morning at 8:30. according to the ohio state highway patrol gasper hit veliz after swerving to avoid another vehicle. police conducted a field sobriety test and arrested him on the scene. veliz was conducting a routine traffic stop when gat per hit him near the mckinley avenue exit near lakewood.

a second victim in the ashland murders has now been identified. 29-year-old elizabeth griffith had been missing since august 15th. she was last seen near the wal- mart on u.s. 250 in ashland. the man indicted in her murder, sean grate, was arraigned via skype friday. >> any questions about the terms and conditions of bond? >> no, sounds fair. >> ashland county jail. and authorities in richland county are still working to identify the third woman he is suspected of killing. former democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders will campaign for his former rival right here in northeast ohio, making stops in akron and kent this weekend on behalf of hillary clinton.

robotic shopping carts will be in the future for wal-mart shoppers. the retailer was granted a patent if a motorized transport unit. it looks like a normal shopping cart but customers would be able to use a hand held device to summon an empty cart. the cart would be able to find customers by optical sensors the device. people are choosing a brown bag lunch over steep restaurant prices. according to a report, lunch restaurant visits across the industry plummeted 7% over the last six months. a spike in menu prices at casual and fast casual chains are responsible for the decline. a new $4 million facility in brooke park is making all the thrill of racing available
