as students, staff and faculty begin the healing process after the attack at ohio state we are getting new information from federal investigators. >> tiffany tarpley is looking into that for us this morning. we know he bought the weapon the day of the attack. >> reporter: we do lynna. he bought the butcher knife from a columbus area walmart this morning. investigators say they have no reason to believe abdul artan's family knew about what he was planning. friends say he was a devout muslim and loved america loved go to school. this is video from his graduation at columbus state community college. last night students staff and faculty gathered on ohio state's campus as part of the healing process. and just hours before, one ofartan's victims spoke publicly for the first time about the attack. professor william clark says at first he thought it was a crash. >> a little bit dazed and thinking how to get up and

other side, the roadside the driver's side and had begun to attack students and there was a lot of noise and shouting. >> reporter: at last check 3 of the 11 victims are still in the hospital this morning. but coming up in the next half- hour, we will dig a little deeper into where the investigation stands especially when it comes to determining a motive for the attack. >> all right see you again. now the other big story this morning the severe weather in the south. at least 3 people are dead and several more storms in alabama. storms ripped through jackson county and a tornado touched down shortly after midnight. crews are working to assess the damage to homes and businesses. thousands of people are without power this morning. now to the latest on the deadly wild fires in east tennessee. at least 3 people have been killed and in gatlinburg hundreds of homes have been damaged. so far 14,000 people have been evacuated from the resort town.

troopers. overnight high winds and dry brush helped to fuel the flames. firefighters have not been able to reach all of the areas. john. two bills moving through the ohio house and senate could mean freedom for chardon high school shooter tj lane who was sentenced to life without parole for the shooting deaths of three classmates in 2012. one bill easily passed which would allow juvenile center to -- sentence to life without parole to apply for parole after 35 years. another bill in sekate is more -- senate is more lenient allowing for parole at age 40. 9 inmates are serving life without parole for juveniles. in a report by the kaiser family foundation the buckeye state had the most deaths due to heroin. one in nine heroin deaths in the u.s. happens in ohio.

6:22. today democrats in the house of representatives will hold a secret ballot to determine their party's new leader. >> and tim ryan from rt tracy joins us with what we can expect on today's vote. tracie. >> reporter: so this is going to be so interesting because nancy pelosi has been the minority leader in the house for more than a decade. but after this last election, democrats are taking a long and hard look at whether or not they need new leadership in ohio. tim ryan could be the guy. they have a secret ballot happening today. this is a vote that was postponed before thanks giving

should be the new leader. ryan says they do need new leadership e says democrats are more -- he says democrats are more frustrated than they have ever seen and they need to make changes to reach out to the voters that put donald trump in office. now as for pelosi there are questions about whether or not the issues that she has been pushing are too liberal. whether or not she is really able to bring the party together and pull in more democrats. she said they were going to pick up 25 seats they have picked up 6. there's some believe it or not they are counting. but i was nowhere near the gain she expected to see for democrats in the house. also, keep in mind she is a very big fund-raiser in the last cycle she raised 141 million dollars. that's something that could work in her favor. compared to a million dollars tim ryan raised but however they are really looking towards new leadership.
