next on eyewitness news...a fayetteville neighborhood rocked by two shootings in one day. how it all began with a homeowner defending his property. plus-- and a gas leak forces businesses to evacuate in raleigh. eyewitness news starts right now. a gas leak in a congested area of raleigh... sending rush hour traffic into gridlock... and businesses into evacuation. and it will impact the morning commute. good evening i'm tisha powell. and i'm joel brown. around 12:30... work crews hit a gas line in the five points area... closing down a number of roads. some areas are still closed tonight.

from raleigh... any word yet on when everything will reopen? no word on that. so for the morning... know that part of whitaker mill...in front of hayes barton baptist church...is still closed. along with part of glenn avenue... near yadkin bank. everything else opened a few hours of traffic headaches... and lost business. chopper 11 hd... giving us a bird's eye view of the mess that was the five points area. crews working to stop a gas leak on whitaker mill road.. digging several holes in the pavement...to do it.... and forcing businesses to evacuate. "around one o'clock or so an at&t construction crew was boring through to lay some fiber optic cable, and inadvertently hit a

through the man hole covers, the crew had to run away and the fire dept showed up and started evacuating all the buildings." marcotte's wife owns a store in the area... and had to close. "today is a huge loss of revenue." ...while businesses at the edge of the evacuation zone sat empty.... fighting to stay in business. "we've been putting out on facebook and instagram yes we're open come on in!" anne downey is the manager at 'nofo at the pig'. she says while those evacuated from businesses nearby came here to eat... it wasn't the same. "we didn't get our usual influx of people because they couldn't access to us. getting into the five points area were closed... for hours. chopper 11 hd showing traffic backed up... and cars even turning around. ....as the work to fix the leak that caused this...continues. underwood elementary school... is less than half a mile from here. wake county schools says there was no trouble with dismissal... but the manager at nofo... said buses that usually come through the area from the school...

so... just a messy day for all in this area. new tonight... a raleigh police officer is 'out' of the hospital, tonight... after being shot and wounded in a case of 'friendly fire'. authorities say officer 'c-n chandler'--was shot by a fellow officer yesterday afternoon on 'university court' off 'lake dam road'. they were responding to a 'burglary' call... when rp encountered kennedy-madueke-- who was armed with a 'knife'. the 28-year old was shot during the incident. he 'remains' in 'critical' condition at wake med. according to a 9- 1-1 call... madueke was 'evicted' from the apartment and refused to leave. we're also learning maduekewas arrested, last year in cary... and charged with

as for the three officers... they have all been placed on administrative leave. you can read much more about this story right now on abc-11 dot-com. it's all right there on the homepage. tonight -- a pedestrian is seriously hurt -- after being hit by a car. fayetteville police posted this video to 'periscope' -- late this afternoon. it happened on 'morganton road' near the 'murray fork drive' intersection. the driver s not hurt. a 'johnston county' mother is dead... and her 8-year- old son 'recovering' this hour... after they were 'hit' by a car in 'benson'. it happened on around 8-30 this morning. our crew on the scene says the mother was walking her son to the bus stop... when they were by a kia... and were 'trapped' under the car. 34-year old maria-suarez was killed. her son, juan- almanza is being treated at wake med. charges are currently pending against the driver of the kia. tonight -- firefighters chasing down 'hotspots' in the smoky mountains. the threat not tirely over -- despite the rain. at least 'eleven' are dead after the fast- moving fire swept through gatlinburg this

people still missing... and firefighters are searching for them now. that fire coming dangerously close to dolly parton's theme park -- 'dollywood'. dolly promising '1- thousand dollars' a month to each family affected. new tonight in the governor's race... the state is giving county board of elections until 'monday'... to 're-count' 94- thousand ballots. the state board of elections made the ruling late this afternoon. plans 'detailing' the recount-- will be finalized tomorrow. this all dates back to election night... and technical problems with durham voting computers. republicans have raised 'questions'... about how those votes were tallied. as it stands now-- democrat roy- cooper currently 'leads' governor mccrory by over 10,000 votes. that's exceeds the threshold for a mandatory statewide recount.

james mattis to be secretary of defense. earlier in the day -- trump and vice president elect 'mike - pence' toured the 'carrier plant' in indiana. the two recently reached a deal with the company to keep a thousand jobs in the u-s from moving to mexico. the deal includes '7- million dollars' in tax incentives. expect 'rolling roadblocks' for your morning commute on the triangle expressway. the traffic slowdown will take place from '9-am.. to.. 9:15'... on 'nc-540 south' near the u-s one interchange. during this time-- be stopped on the ramp-- from u-s one north. this will allow crews to safely install three overhead signs. the roadblocks are scheduled to wrap up around one in the afternoon. today is 'world aids day'... a global time to remember those who lost their life to the disease. dozens of people gathered this evening... for a vigil at durham's central park. from there, they marched to the l- g-b-t-q center on 'hunt street'. they are looking to raise

while they look for clues and evidence, they say they don't have a positive id on the suspects or a motive. in the earlier shooting today, police say 31 year old timothy leham, with two gunshot wounds. when he broke into a home on catapla drive. the home-owner was in the residence, shot lehman once in the stomach. police say lehman continued advancing towards the home-owner who shot lehman a 2nd time. they say lehman fled the residence and a short-time later found at cape fear valley medical center seeking treatment. police say the home-owner 58 year old james

wake county will have homes for the holidays. it's all thanks to habitat for humanity of wake county. this evening, they dedicated homes to omega-smith and ronea-hopkins on 'skinner drive' in raleigh. they're just two of the 60 homes is building this year. to make this project even more unique--both homes were funded 'primarily' by 'women'. construction on the homes began in late august. this is the 7th year that habitat wake has participated in "women build". the carolina
