potential for flooding just before midnight. they went out and knocked on doors to warn as many people as they could. reporting live in jackson county, john ostendorf, news 13. >> frank: our team coverage of the recent severe weather continues now in asheville where hehevy rains are causing sewer pipes to overflow. >> hope: spent over $300 million to replace pipes. with 5 inches of rain in five days, the system is stressed. >> news 13's kimberly king is live just south of the airport. kim, what do you see there? >> kim: frank, what you see behind me is an example of what is happening. there is water that's ponding. the ground is saturated. the water has nowhere to go. it's a similar situation for the pipes all across asheville that are overwhelmed. and therefore we see the outflow. this is the spill way on the

on north asheville where the water flow speaks volumes. five inches of rain in the past five days. and this is ken stein, director of asheville water systems in today on his day off. >> the whole system is inundated with water. our sewer lines' about 100 years old. it's got a lot of leaking joints in it. it gets infiltrated with storm water. >> kim: the city had 37 sewage spills. this cycle, there have only been 28 spills. well ahead of the last cycle. while that might sound concerning, stein says the waste water from your bathroom isn't concentrated. >> a very small percentage is raw sewage. the majority of it is itself storm water that inundates the system. >> kim: using larger pipe like this.

flooding for the majority of us. flash flooding will be an issue farther south. no rain chances, though, as we get in to the new year. saturday and sunday a dry weekend. a lot of dry weather ahead thankfully. but look at how many days of rain we've had. we've added up over 5 and 3/4 of an inch. some places have gotten ten inches or more in those days. so it's a lot of rain, folks. and the ground is just saturated. 64 degrees and sunshine. south-southwest wind at 10. dew where's the cold air? ooh it is inching our way, folks. 45 in memphis.

what a difference. the warm front is separating the cold air from the warm air. anything with a southerly flow is going to draw moisture up and over this frontal boundary and give us a chance for rain. the good news is this frontal boundary will start to move farther east tomorrow evening in to thursday putting the rain chances much farther east in the mountains and the upstate. will it wobble a little bit? is there certain areas that could get more rain? yes. south is when where i think some of the heavier rain bands. clouds advancing. here come the showers by day break. southern mountains and upstate. it will be periods of rain. it's not going to be a complete soaking rainfall all day. that's the good news. the rainfall amount will be less than what we saw last night and in the afternoon yesterday.
