at least 18 people are dead in 2 states. these are some images coming out of missouri showing entire neighborhoods surrounded by water. >> a mcdonald's with water up to the windows. residents are being told to be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice and many already have because it is not over yet. more now from abc a megan hughes. >> reporter: along the rising rivers an army of volunteers armed with sandbags are fighting a tough foe. >> the water has come up fast. >> reporter: parts of the town of kimmswick already flooded. in union, missouri, a mcdonald's nearly submerged. a gas station under water. rising rivers causing this sewage treatment plant to exceed capacity. and many rivers haven't crested yet. water is already touching the steel on this bridge on the historic route 66. more than 500 roads are already closed. the missouri governor is calling in the national guard. >> we're dealing with an incredible amount of water

you're talking about almost ten more vertical feet of moving water. >> reporter: flooding blamed for at least 18 deaths in the region and across the country snowstorms are also proving deadly. in new york this crash between a fedex truck and black sedan on slick roads killed the car's 22-year-old driver. whiteout conditions from the northeast to the midwest made travel nearly impossible. by road, or by air. 850 cots were set up at o'hare airport overnight. thousands are stranded. >> i'm just trying to get home. it's been a pretty long day. >> reporter: megan hughes, abc news, washington. >> a mess everywhere and it'll be a much drier day today in the northeast although as you can see on the radar there will be some rain, sleet or light snow in the morning. >> not so in the southeast where there is more rain in store. let's get the details from accuweather's justin povick. good morning, justin. >> kendis and marci, thanks again.

we're tracking some snow on this wednesday throughout the nation's midsection that could cause slippery travel through chicago as we get through the evening rush. later on this week new year's eve forecast coming up looking quiet for the most part throughout the northeast but it is going to be on the chilly side. those midnight temperatures mostly into the 30s and the 40s. kendis and marci, back to you. >> all right, our thanks to justin. breaking news right now. two earthquakes overnight on the west coast, one with an epi epicenter in canada, a 4.9 magnitude quake and people in seattle say they felt the shaking. >> another, a 4.4 magnitude in california hitting near devore. people also reported feeling the earthquake throughout the suburbs of east of los angeles which is about 50 miles southwest of the epicenter. >> what we're learning more than a dozen aftershocks already felt. no major damage or injuries have been reported as yet.

for president starting with donald trump's increasingly personal attacks against hillary clinton. >> yeah, trump opened up his campaign plane to reporters last night then went on the offensive against the democratic front-runner. >> hillary brought up the whole thing with sexist and all i did was reverse it on her. she has a major problem in her house. if she warrants to do that we're going to go right after the president, the ex-president and see how it all comes out. i feel confident it comes out well for us. >> he used the names monica lewinsky and paula jones in attacks against former president clinton and said his own extramarital affairs are fair game. he will begin spending $2 million a week on ads starting in the new ar. hillary clinton seemed to ignore trump's latest attacks and didn't mention him during a

series for four seasons was taken into custody tuesday. authorities say they found hundreds of images on sauling's computer. police obtained a search warrant after getting a tip. he was released on a $0,000 bond due back in court next month. new details in the capture of the so-called affluenza teen from texas. authorities say ethan couch and his mother gave away their location in mexico by using a cell phone to order a domino's pizza. couch was on the runfter allegedly violating probation. he killed four people in a 2013 drunk driving crash but couch avoided jail time after his legal team claimed he was too spoiled to know right from wrong. his mother is expected to face charges. both could be returned to texas as early as today. admittedly we've been spoiled but gas prices have stopped falling. right now they're hovering around a national average of $2 a gallon. aaa says prices on christmas the

at the time. investigators in alaska say the victim's wife worked on the sixth floor of that building but she was not in the office when the plane crashed. the search resumes this morning for craig strickland. body of his hunting partner was recovered monday along with the singer's dog who was found alive and well. they had been duck hunting on a lake in the northern part of the state when the boat capsized. family members say they are holding out hope. the coaching carousel is firing up. the eagles fired chip kelly who had been with the team for three seasons. kelly was criticized after certainly personnel decisions backfired and eagles missed the playoffs the last two season. college football, bowl season is cranking into high gear. >> details about one player's incredible performance now from our friends at espn.
