>> jason: what we get here in the mountains will be little and likely does not lead to any additional flooding. flash flood warnings have been extended until 9 this evening. the red color. you can see that flash flood warning for southern transylvania, i should say southern spartanburg county. seek higher ground if you haven't already in some of these low lying spots. we still have a flood watch out until 7 o'clock tomorrow morning. we still have a few of them left over. and of course the entire upstate under that flood watch for the potential of more flooding. right now the rain heavy and steady. here's where the rain has resided much of the day. south and east of i-85. you're starting to dry out a

spartanburg, greer, anderson, almost at three inches. your evening planner, upper 50s to mid 50s by 11. rain spreads farther to the east. we'll talk about your bigger changes for the new year coming up in just a bit. >> larry: crews estimate it may cost more than $100,000 to rebuild the road damaged by heavy rains. >> tammy: kim, how's it looking out there? >> kim: tammy, you can see creeks behind me like this across the county are full to the brim with water and a little bit of white water there behind me. we actually saw a crew out surveying a nearby bridge to make sure it wasn't damage as the heavy rain continued throughout the day around here. on a tip we received about a flood in rural polk county.

difficult. dot posted a sign road closed. we found these cones but couldn't immediately see why. just up the road, a major mud and rock slide. limbs covering the road as rain ter ran off the road and the mountain. within 30 minutes, a dot crew showed up. county maintenance engineer with the highway division assessed the damage. >> it just came down. >> kim: he says the damage by erosion on the road on the other side could cost more than $100,000 to repair. >> you can't really repair anything until the water goes down. this is the worst one we've had. >> kim: across the counties, creeks are full. >> it's happened once before. now it's happening again. there's a lot of land moving.

engineer tells me that they are documenting any kind of damage across the county to make sure that if they have that information they can then submit it for possible federal money for reimbursement as they begin these potentially expensive repairs. reporting live from polk county, kimberly king, news 13. >> reporter: thanks, kim. we're live right now at perhaps one of the hardest hit areas in greenville county. this road is causing some in the area to worry. by late in the afternoon, the rain stopped pouring. remains from this morning's heavy showers can still be found in some parts of greenville county. like here on warehouse court

submerged this highly traveled road. tollbert says he was concerned when the rain began to fall but he says it's not unusual for about half a foot of water or more. he says it could have been much worse. >> it had been worse than what it is now. it has come up halfway in to the backyard. >> reporter: the water may seem calm and shallow but the mystery of what lies beneath the surface is what has him worried. >> i don't see how you can get in there without drowning your car or running over something. you don't know what's in there. >> reporter: warehouse court is a two-way road. two cars passing by each other could also pose a threat.

night no one slept through. water still hasn't subsided. a glimpse of the danger that came so close. >> it's just all a blur. >> hope: justin tieg was up at 2:00 a.m. scrambling with his neighbors to get to higher ground. >> the water was up and within 30 minutes this water had risen 5, 6 feet. >> hope: that's when he saw a woman in her car below driving through knee-deep water. >> at first i thought they were passing through the water. then i heard the screams for help. >> hope: the water wasas colder than he thought and more deeper. >> i swam to her where it was more shallow. she started to get outside of the car and i just helped her. >> hope: everyone made it out safely. the driver declined to talk to us.

authorities say watkins suspected one of the boys was involved in a recent burglaries of his home. investigators are still looking for the bodies. >> tammy: five people are killed in a wrong way crash in miami. it happened on i-95. a pick-up truck was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided with several other cars. two people were hospitalized with unknown injuries. several lanes were shut down as authorities investigated. four on-duty secret service agents were involved in a crash in new hampshire. a man was traveling on route 16 when he crossed the dividing line. his car then collided head-on with a vehicle carrying the secret service agents. the driver of the car was killed. the agents suffered non-life threatening injuries. investigators would not say who

now your news 13 skywatch weather. >> jason: so asheville has the second wettest december ever recorded. those go back to the 1870s, folks. we'll add a little more rain when it's all said and done. we've also had the record warmest average temperatures ever recorded. that's in asheville, of course, too. what a year it's been. what a december, of course, too. showers still happening on the east side of 26. especially that's where some of the heaviest rain resides, union county, cherokee county, down through greenwood. east out of the upstate. this is great news. you're drying out. it's a slow process. additional rainfall shouldn't be

low lying spots typical places that flood. don't go near them. we do have a chance of isolated showers popping up. a lot of rain has shifted east and north of asheville. look at all this recent rainfall from the 21st all the way through today. we've had nine days straight of measurable rain. a record rain fall on christmas eve. 1.54 today. 4/10 of an inch of rain. almost two inches of rain. impressive. 62 degrees. it is mostly cloudy. now we're dry in asheville. humidity is still pretty high. the dew p pint is still pretty warm. the dew point is still pretty high in the upstate in the low 60s. but there is change coming. dryer air and certainly colder air. look at the 20s right now as you go to the midwest. that cold air is beginning to ooze it's way southeast ward. now it's not going to be 20s.

chill as we see highs in the 40s for friday and in to the weekend, too. much colder than the 70s and 60s we have been enjoying lately. there's that cold wind for the northwest. area of high pressure anchors its way to the south. it's just going to be chilly. believe you me, but dry. here's your future cast. a lot of cloud cover again. some of this will erode away tonight. i'm more optimistic you're going to stay dry mostly tonight. some sunshine tomorrow. but then right back in to clouds for new year's eve night and new year's day. so it's going to be a cloudy start to the new year. additional rainfall, not much here in the mountains. there are your lows tonight. 40s and 50s. it will be a little cooler tonight, especially in the upstate. tomorrow's highs will stay 50s in asheville. still getting in to the 60s over

program that incorporates mixed martial arts continues in popularity. >> larry: more people are trying mma for the new year. it's also turning in to a family affair. >> a lot of people think that mma is just for fighting and they think it's a brutal art. and it's absolutely not. >> reporter: if you talk to abby clark robinson and her us h band jeff who work together at this club, mma, the reason mixed martial arts is growing is you get more than a stronger body. >> you're going to learn a practical art. you're going to learn self-defense. and you're going to learn a skill. >> reporter: that skill is becoming more attractive to especially women. >> when i first started, there weren't very many girls. i actually had to wrestle with men. >> reporter: but not anymore, they may have started because they have a family.

learning, we made at stop at the western north carolina nature center to see what the kids are doing during the holiday break. >> now you and i have a squeeze factor of about 20 pounds per square inch. so we can squeeze about 20. some raptors can squeeze like 220. >> larry: well the rain did not keep visitors from stopping by this afternoon. some of them took part in an educational program called animal moments. >> tammy: the focus of today's program were an owl. those in today's program were excited to learn. >> one thing we like about this center is it brings animals that are indigenous to this region, to the appalachian region, in to the center. so it's not a zoo where you see exotic animals. but it's a place where you see indigenous animals from this area. >> tammy: it takes place every
