with high water in historic flooding. while some people are cleaning up while others are still phrasing for the worst. now from western north carolina's news leader, in is news 13 at 11. >> frank: an unseasonably fall and winter may be affecting another season right now, we're talking flu season. zero reported right now. news 13's justin hinton joins us. justin, just because it's a slow start doesn't mean we should let our guard down. >> justin: that's right. primarily because the height of the flu season is in january and february when people trade in the fun outdoors for a nice comfortable couch next to the fire. >> for the dogs to get fresh air, too, so they're not cooped up. >> justin: sun's out, shorts out. >> it's always nice to be able to get outside.

we have so many reasons to stay locked up in the house with technology and everything people get so in to. >> justin: whether it's playing in a pool of water or going for a bike ride. all of those outdoor activities may be contributing to a decrease of flu cases. >> i is kind of surprising in the last couple of years. >> justin: this time last year, the number of north carolina deaths related to the flu was already more than 20. topping out at more than 200. doctors say people are less likely to pass their sickness on to others when they're out and about. rather than being cooped up indoors. >> once i put something on for winter i don't take it on until the spring to avoid that. plus i get the shot every year. >> justin: that shot, the flu vaccination, is what experts say is the best way to stop the virus.

to the season doesn't mean it's not going to come. >> if they have not had the flu shot, now's the best time to do it because the worst time of the year is typically january-february. >> justin: another reason why there were so many deaths last year, the flu morphed making the vaccine less effective. encourage people to get their flu shot each year saying it's the best protector. >> frank: developing news out of mitchell county tonight, crews are at the scene of a residential fire. a single wide mobile home in beak bakersville is a total loss. it burned until about 10 o'clock, just an hour ago. it looks like glass blowing facility next door may have been where that fire started. but officials say further investigation is needed to determine a definite cause. homeowners and their eight year-old daughter were there at the time. they got out safely.

tonight and will receive assistance from the red cross. new developments now in lawsuits filed against clemson university about a family of a student who died during a fraternity run. schools denying allegations made in the death and personal injury cases. the parents of tucker hipps took legal action after his death. the lawsuits allege clemson knew that sigma phi epsilon had a long standing tradition of pledges jumping off that bridge and swimming to shore. the university says it has no knowledge of any such tradition and seeking dismissal of those lawsuits. the reverend jesse jackson comes to the upstate. jackson is touring south carolina promoting voter registration leading up to the presidential primary election day. he's urging palmetto lawmakers to accept the affordable care act. jackson says he's concerned

continue to own this nation. >> frank: he was taken away, that trump supporter shouted, "shame on you, bernie." mississippi rivers beginning to recede. the worst is over in some places, others are still in danger. richard cantu has the latest. >> reporter: from the sky, the breadth and depth of this disaster are painfully clear. the mississippi river crested at a new high. from missouri down to louisiana, rivers are rising. waters swallowing everything in its path. >> it's reached its highest since 1993, i think. >> reporter: desperate measures failed to hold the water at bay. it came too late for far too many homeowners.

and we had water rise four feet. >> reporter: the floods have claimed hundreds of homes in at least 24 lives. >> the vast majority of those deaths are people who drove in to water. >> reporter: he could only watch as the rising waters battered his home from this to this. >> everyone got out okay? >> yes. everyone got out all right. my dog's out. >> reporter: scenes like these are an ominous reprieve for many. >> frank: our temperatures are dropping. you can feel it out there. it's beginning to feel a lot more like winter. karen wynne joins us with our skywatch forecast. >> karen: right, frank, we are chilly right now. well below freezing in many mountain locations.

31 in hendersonville. 28 in morganton. milder in greer. 38 degrees there. this is not the coldest night by a long shot. we have even colder air coming our way. our winds are fairly light in most places. only three miles per hour in asheville. a little bit breezier in bryson city at 7. not much, though. that morning planner should include that heavy coat. especially if you're out and about early. 8 o'clock, 28 degrees. we're only at 33 by mid morning. still quite chilly then. not quite so cool by noon. 42 degrees. we check it out in the upstate. it's also going to be a chilly morning. plenty of sunshine, though. 49 degrees at noon. coming up, i'll show you when that much cooler air arrives and what it's going to bring with it. >> frank: great news for mountain and upstate college basketball fans. the countdown to march madness is officially underway.

can catch clemson a little closer to home than usual this year. tigers are playing their home games in greenville. >> we love it here in greenville. it's really close to where we live in southern greenville county. we really enjoy it. its just a 30 minute drive from there instead of about an hour going in to clemson. so we enjoy that. >> the well, they're calling it. hosting clemson's home games while little john coliseum undergoes repairs. stan will have highlights from that clemson game and more just a little bit later on in sports. kind of a sad day for many shoppers in downtown weaverville. long time source for bargains is no longer open. rose's shut its doors for the last time. it leaves a buncombe county town without a discount department store.

but even these clouds are not very thick at all. with the lack of thick cloud cover, we have cooled down quite a bit. right now in asheville we are at 30 degrees. our wind chill, 26. that's how cold it feels outside. if you are about to step out for anything, of course bundle up. in greenville right now, 38 degrees. also clear. southwest winds at 6. a wind chill of 33. bigger picture shows a big ridge of high pressure off to our west keeping us dry. much of the country dry. as we put this in to motion, we'll notice this ridge keeps any kind of moisture to the south. we have a system moving down to the north. this is bringing in very cold air. this clipper system, strong winds and see a little bit of cloud cover on monday. that could contain some flurries over the northern mountains. meanwhile we do have much colder air that's going to be moving in

monday is just going to be a good indoor day. very gusty winds. lows on monday night is going to be dipping to about 20 degrees. we'll show you the future cast hour by hour with not that many changes. a few high thin clouds by day break. sunday, tomorrow morning, definitely bundle up. the good news is you're not going to need that heavy coat too long. we can see by 5 o'clock, pretty much cloud free in the mountains. only a few clouds in the upstate. then we have that system moving down from the north, only showing up in the form of cloud cover. on monday morning, monday all day long is going to be windy and very cold. lows tonight are going to be chilly. dropping down to 26 in asheville. 23 in franklin. mid 20s in burnsville. lower 20s in newland and boone. right around that freezing mark

highs tomorrow rebounding nicely. enjoy that sunshine because beyond that we do have those chilly changes coming up. that chance of flurries mainly again in the higher elevations north of asheville. although we could see a few of them in asheville on monday. no accumulation, though. a low of 20 on tuesday morning.
