we are certainly seeing clear skies from most in the region. look at the current air temperatures. mid 20s burnsville. 17 in newland. we're dropping in to the 20s now at gsp international at greer. little bit of wind still out there. yeah, more so in asheville. that's typically the case. we get about 10 to 15 miles per hour. here go the wind chills down in to the teens pretty much anywhere you go. higher elevations in yancey, avery county, in to watauga county. temperatures in the 20s in some places south. really no wind chill factor at this point in time. but you look here and you see towards the future and we have wind chills dropping down to the single digits at times.

>> it's been a shock to the system. it's b bn a change. but i guess it was time. time for winter. >> hey, it's winter time. what do we expect? normal winter. >> reporter: embracing the cold air, edmond metcalf suited up and drove his scooter around mars hill in the snow. last week he was riding without a jacket at all. >> it is much colder than what we've had. december was beautiful. we was lucky to have it. warm break until winter. winter came late this year. >> reporter: freezing air than any of that winter precipitation people wished for. >> i really wanted snow for christmas. i wish it had come earlier. it's nice now. the snow. >> reporter: since winter is just getting started, there's plenty more of where that came from in the forecast.

northern mountains woke up to flakes flying. fields covered in snow making roads slick in madison and yancey county. both counties dismissed schools early. that was a delight to the students on their first day back from christmas break. >> i thought it was funny because it's been sunny and stuff and we get back to school and it's snowing. >> tammy: dot crews urge anyone driving in the northern mountains tonight to be extra careful. drivers in haywood county say they were not prepared for the burst of winter. even the smallest amount of snow can lead to trouble on the roads. troopers say the snow contributed to at least one wreck. >> larry: house fires caused by unsign dangers. and it's already happened. news 13's frank kracher is line

frank, it's tempting to just get those fires going. >> frank: people rush out on a night like this, they grab a couple of pieces of firewood and hurry back in to the house. if you think they're hustling because of the cold, you oughta see the chimney sweeps. as quickly as they can get the cleaning brushes out of the trucks, and ladders and run off to the roof tops, they're tackling job after job. business is suddenly booming because everybody wan a nice warm fire now. >> if they haven'tt had it checked in years, it hasn't been cleaned in years, i'd recommend not burning. >> frank: a chimney fire

crack in the floou. t his company takes sweeping with a brush. >> without the video camera, you really don't know what's on the inside. we've had her customer who had her chimney cleaned every year. we put a camera in and found it was not safe. we don't want to scare anybody but it's a very real hazard. it happens every day. there's chimney fires, house fires. unless you've had it looked, it's not the risk worth taking. >> frank: safety goes beyond the fire place, getting rid of what you burn in it. a duplex burned in candler. someone had put hot embers out on to the porch.

destroyed. >> tammy: tonight henderson county commissioners voted to bring what would be one of the county's biggest employers. a new plant linemar is thinking about building in mills river. aaron adelson is live outside of the buncombe county. >> reporter: linemar is partnering up with george fisher. those companies are considering henderson county for a car parts plant. mills rivers' town manager says there are finalists competing against columbia, south carolina. looking to invest $217 million to create 350 new jobs. salaries would average $47,000 after the investment is made, the county and town would pay back $7.2 million over 14 years. >> nobody likes economic development incentives.

we decide whether or not we're going to play. and in this day and age to provide economic opportunity for our citizens going forward, you have to offer economic development incentives. >> aaron: county expects a decision in the next 30 days. about two years ago president obama came here praising linemar for a post recession success. that success could continue in the mountains. aaron adelson, news 13. >> larry: a crumbling retaining wall has driven a wedge. dwayne hill says the only access road at summit springs is now in jeopardy. he claims a water line burst last month damaging the wall and blocking the creek. they were told the city was not at fault. people in the subdivision wouldill now have to foot the bill. >> that's not right.

this is what we have now. >> we had a good road before it broke. now we have a damaged road and potentially no road. >> l lry: dwayne hill says homeowners may take legal action to force the city to fix the wall. he says the city will relocate the water line to help avoid a catastrophic failure that would impact water service. >> tammy: a school heavily damaged from last week's rains are still cleaning up. a mudslide near the charter school in swannanoa flooding nearly every building. it has been pushed back until at least thursday as volunteers work to clean up dry wall as well as painting. they're asking for help in a different way.

north charleston officer michael slagger shot $500,000. his trial date is set for october 31st. president obama says there's an epidemic of gun violence in america. he wants to use executive action to tighten gun laws. his proposal calls for expanding background checks. unregistered sellers who sometimes try to avoid background checks at gun shows or even online. mountain residents have differing opinions. >> i like the idea a lot because i think it's just too loose. i think we have too many guns. >> going in to gun shows, you still have to go through the center background checks just like everyone else. >> larry: a gun collector could also be defined as a gun seller. beefing up inspections of licensed dealers.

those long return lines at the mall after the holidays. it's an app designed to let kids trade their toys and will also teach them business basics. here's tonight's family 411 report. >> reporter: kasie jackson and her mom. >> you've read this one a bunch of times. >> reporter: the nine-year-old is looking to trade on a new app. >> kids trade is an app aimed at kids. the idea is to allow kids to be able to trade their stuff with each other. the kids can capture a toy they no longer want. >> reporter: it's safe because everything on it has to be approved by parents. >> i can approve everything that happens. i can approve when she posts a toy. i can approve friend. >> you search for names of people you know and see if they're on the app. >> reporter: swapping is nothing

warmer but not by much. 29. the wind much lighter so the wind chill is only 24. i say only but it is still very cold, too. once it moves out over the atlantic, there goes the wind. it brings the moisture with it. first it will be in the form of clouds late wednesday in to thursday. eventually the rain will begin to form as we see the clouds lower. friday will certainly be a wet day. some where off the coast of the carolinas later in the week next week we could see something development. maybe monday. we'll watch that closely because if that happens, we could see some wintery weather like this. look at this weather shot today from uplifting photography, the blue ridge parkway. this it is.

future cast, it is clear. it will remain that way through the morning, afternoon, and even the evening tomorrow. eventually clouds will be on the increase. watch them increase wednesday afternoon in the evening and overnight in to thursday. clouds pretty thick in the upstate and southern foothills and piedmont. forecast lows tonight, single digits up in to boone. teens in many places other than that. mostly low teens to middle and upper teens from the mountains to the valleys. 30s and 40s mixed for the highs. mid 40s in andrews. you'll find 40s as well over the upstate. back to the mid 40s in asheville by thursday. flirt with 60 degrees on saturday. that will be the pick day of the next seven days.s. we'll chill down in to next week. we're watching sunday in to monday because we could have rain, of course. and we could mix in snow it it's colder.

the former state leaders racial views in the late 1900s have been the focus of criticism. the vandals caused about $20,000 worth of damage. >> larry: a pair of police officers whose car broke down. five days before the mother's due date. but she gave birth in the car on the way to the hospital. there's the baby. right after that the car broke down. the officers stayed with her and helped make sure the baby was okay until the ambulance got there. the new mom and her baby are doing just fine. >> tammy: pittsburg sandwiches to the buffalo bills front offices to thank them for beating the new york jets. the general manager says he also tossed in a couple of terrible towels with that order just for good measure.
