3 3 3 drivers in haywood county say they were not prepared for the burst of winter weather yesterday. even the smallest amount of snow can lead to trouble on the roads. troopers say the snow contributed to at least one of several wrecks in the area. 3 3 snow showers also hit the high country. that prompted school officials to send students home around lunch time in watauga county. in our area, madison and yancey counties let students out early as well. the d-o-t says it did not have any major problems because the ground has been so warm from the mild winter. typically, by this time of the year, the d-o-t has used nearly two thousand tons of salt to keep drivers safe. only 50-tons have been used so far this season. 3 3 farmers in the piedmont hope the snow is a sign of winter's return. rick langhorne has been growing blueberries and

counun for years. he says he does not ever recall a december like the one we just had. his blueberry bushes are already blooming--and he is expecting a great crop. 3 "should have a really good crop on these this year. they are ahead of schedule. blooms are swollen but not enough where a 20 degree night is going to hurt them."3 he says as long as we keep this "normal" winter weather around, his peaches and most varieties of his blueberries should be fine. 3 3 3 we have an update this morning on a school that was heavily damaged by rain. art-space charter school in swannanoa will not reopen until at least thursday. as we have reported, a mudslide near the school flooded the building... damaging nearly every classroom. the school was scheduled to open today. but, that was pushed back as volunteers continue to help clean-up. the school is also trying t traise money to pay a 25-thousand-dollar insurance deductible. shot several times following a foot chase and a struggle over the officer's weapon. matthews' family says he was mentally ill and unarmed when the incident happened. medical examiners have ruled the death a homicide. 3 3 a suspect in a string of violent crimes in california led police on a car chase before being caught. police say a man crashed into two other drivers head-on. he then crashed his car, before police shot and wounded him. the incident shut down the freeway yesterday afternoon. police say the 32-year-old is suspected of murder, robbery and carjackings. 3 3 a terrifying near-miss in oregon yesterday. an 18-wheeler slid on ice and nearly crashed into an apartment complex. neighbors said it jack-knifed on a hill near the apartments. they watched it slide a few hundred yards -- and even spin around as it headed downhill. luckily, the semi did not slam into the building. 3 3 governor pat mccrory declares january as stalking awareness month in north carolina. this
