working. it's a forecast has been refined. winter weather advisories kick in tomorrow morning and last until 7 o'clock thursday. not for everyone. madison, swain, graham, cherokee, clay, macon and jackson county included. up to three i ihes about 3500 feet. one inch in the valleys will do it. winter storm warnings farther south of there. we will get snow in asheville and buncombe county, too. but it just will not meet the criteria for winter weather advisory. it won't reach one inch. my impact forecast for the winter storm coming up tomorrow, snow and black ice, moderate on the category there. but the wind and cold won't be as big of a deal on the low end in terms of impact. snows across illinois and missouri. couple of inches on the ground

worked on a major fire. >> darcel: it happened in maggie valley. a commercial garage and some attached apartments went up in flames. we first showed you video last night at 11:00. news 13's frank kracher is back out there liive tonight. >> larry: have investigators figured out a cause yet, frank? >> frank: there's still no official word from the fire marshall. witnesses agree on one thing. it's really not about what they saw but what they heard. >> it just blew up. it was a heck of a fire. >> frank: firefighters from seven departments rushing to the scene. what they found was two buildings fully engulfed. a commercial garage, business field with machinery, equipment and some cars. flames also shooting. smoke billowing from windows of attached apartments.

becomes a total loss. >> there was a minor smoke inhalation but no one was killed and no one was hurt. >> frank: betty's home sits about 20 feet away. today, there's still smoke. sheets of ice were water from fire trucks flowed last night. there are two reasons betty's house is still standing. >> fortunately my husband is a contractor. when he built that extension of the building, he put a fire wall in. it saved the house. plus the fact we just put a new metal roof which i think kept the roof from catching on fire. so we are extremely fortunate. >> as i got the card and the exploded. >> frank: jerry ferguson had been used the atm at the bank nearby when he heard something familiar. >> i was in combat before. and it just sounded like an artillery round hit and it exploded big time. >> frank: but everyone got out

little is left. >> beyond lucky. i feel like there was a guardian angel watching over us. very thankful. >> frank: all of those left homeless are stayayg with relatives or hotels. no official cause determined yet. frank crocker, news 13. >> darcel: firefighters battled extreme temperatures to put out a fire in fairview. the fire forced a woman and child out in to the cold. crews from six different fire departments were called in t t the home on emma's grove road around 4 this evening. the freezing temperatures made the job especially tough. >> it's extremely hard because it takes water to put the fire out. well the water is freezing in temperatures like this. these guys are cold. we're just trying to rotate them in and out. trying to keep them warm.

around the scene as firefighters worked to keep hoses from freezing. >> larry: a shooting in woodfin has left a neighborhood reeling from whathappened. police say a man was shot. he is recovering in hospital. scotty robinson was charged with first degree murder. >> reporter: it was here along wellington drive where shots were fired. we haven't found someo who heard what happened. but we did talk with a few neighbors who said they saw a lot of police and first responders just up the hill. a 35-year-old man shot in the chest is the call police responded to just after 1:00 a.m. the man police say is responsible is 34-year old scotty earl robinson. he's now in custody. the neighbors we talked with have not lived on wellington

to think of the shooting. >> it either was done in the house and quietly done because i haven't seen much. >> id was about to walk towards my roommate. it's kind of scary to hear that something that's, you know you hear about it on the news. you hear it happened in your neighborhood, that's a little more close to home and scary. >> reporter: police say robinson and the victim know each other. adding this was not a random act of violence. the woodfin police chief tells us he will talk with us first thing tomorrow morning. in woodfin, jerrika insco, news 13. >> darcel: a cherokee police officer has resigned after being arrested on a domestic violence charge. 26-year-old charles stamper is charged with assault on a female.

physical altercation involving stamper and his girlfriend friday. stamper was held in tribal jail for 72 hours. 69-year-old james anglin was found shot to death in his home in burnsville october 13th, 2013. anglin lived alone and was discovered by a friend. a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction in the case. >> larry: the assistant principal at north buncombe high school has been put on paid leave pending investigation. the district says they're looking in to anncident involving a student following a friday night. they're not saying what the incident involved. barry owens has worked at north buncombe since 2004. he's also the athletic director there. the district said putting him on leave is standard protocol when an accusation of misconduct like

>> darcel: thieves break in to a business and the owner hopes surveillance video will help investigators track them down. alex vance says a man smashed the window of his tire shop along the smoky mountain expressway. surveillance video shows the car the thieves were driving. >> they're trying a two-door honda civic, dark blue. he was wearing a coat with a hoodie. >> darcel: businesses in the area are stepping up security measures. if you have any information, call the haywood county sheriff's office. >> larry: new tonight, a unc asheville professor says life for african american communities is not improving. news 13's aaron adelson is a a unc asheville tonight.

happened monday night right in front of foxx's california home. to grab the man. >> grabbed the scissors and cut the seatbelts. pulled him out. and within five minutes later, it went up. >> as far as i'm concerned, he saved his life. >> i don't look at it as heroic. i just had to do something. >> darcel: the man was taken to the hospital with injuries, including broken bones but is expected to be okay. >> larry: governor mccrory has ordered emergency management officials to be ready to deal with the winter weather across the state. with the potential for a storm to bring close to a foot of snow to mountain communities later this week. road crews are already preparing.

now your news 13 skywatch weather. >> jason: still a lot of details to iron out with the winter storm coming. there will be greatest impacts from snow and ice. that's a given, i think at this point. moderately high impacts there. impeding travel causing you to certainly think about slowing down or staying home. wind and cold will also be factors. not as big factors as we would have like a major nor' easter. we've got a storm track just south. that puts the low pressure somewhere over the southern tennessee valley and pushing across the appalachian sometime in to friday. snow, freezing rain and sleet for portions of the valleys. portions of western north carolina. it starts in asheville and goes east along the continental

in to west virginia. all snow throughout this entire event. that's where the highest snow fall totals will likely occur. south of i-85, it's going to be rain with this system. watch as we go through time. this system pushes east and then we start to see snow. to the snows take over for everybody as we get in to the second half of this event in to saturday. so the cold is in place. the moisture comes over that ice initially, freezing sleet. asheville areas east. the snows continue for the high country as the system goes by us on saturday we finally get in to the snow fall. so that's why the snow fall amounts in the valleys will be limited compared to the mountains. first snows come tomorrow, though. this is not associated with the big storm. it will be enough to produce

waves of snow especially afternoon. the valleys likely a little bit here and there. asheville, half inch or less. west, closer to the tennessee border, the vallele there could have up to an inch of snow. friday, midnight, it starts to get real messy around here. snow, sleet, rain, you name it. it's all in the bag there with this next system. here are the snow totals tomorrow. half inch or less in asheville. we wait on the next round to come in. this is friday midnight. there's friday morning, up to three inches in asheville by then. up to a foot or more for the spine of the blue ridge as you go north in to friday afternoon. that's a lot. and there's ice to deal with, too. we could see up to a quarter inch of ice for areas especially east. temperatures in the teens tonight. it will be cold. warm enough to melt off most of the accumulations. our temperatures will go in the
