winter storm. the things experts say should go in your car before you do. >> jason: we'll have live team coverage for a major winter storm headed for the mountains. >> zack: ice plus snow accumulations. >> tammy: if you plan to travel by air this weekend, changes are in store. what major airlines are offering ahead of a major storm. now from western north carolina's news leader, this is news 13 at 5:30. >> tammy: a state of emergency declared across the state and now in buncombe county. >> frank: we begin our live team coverage tonight of the winter storm headed our way with chief meteorologist jason boyer. jason, what's in store this evening? >> jason: this evening is going to be quiet. it's overnight and tomorrow. when you wake up, there will be snow and ice on the ground. we've got the flake-o-meter all the way maxed out by a sweat.

it's going to be a lot. dangerous travel and significant snow and ice accumulations for anybody in the magenta color. you can't get away from this. these winter storm warnings go all the way back to the west including nashville, knoxville. east to charlotte, fayetteville, even over to raleigh. that is a massive area, folks. it's a major storm that's going to have that much of a scope to it. winter storm timeline, icy mix of snow. friday morning, mix of snow and ice. periods of heavy snow. it may not be snowing continuously. but snow nonetheless. in to missouri, it is tracking south and diving off the coast. that's where it bombs out and strengthens to a major winter storm. we'll be dealing with all kinds of wintery weather but mostly

really been trying to answer. meteorologist zack green and myself have been looking at all the data. >> zack: that's right. we continue to increase those storm chances. it's all about the model differences at this point. the majority of them are putting us in to that 9 to even 15 inch range. i do think that's where we're going to be seeing the accumulation come saturday morning. the temperature is going to play a key component especially this evening. >> jason: you see 40s right now and you think really? it's going to get that cold? it's going to cool these layers down above our heads. so this is all going to work down to the surface and everything is just going to start turning wintery. >> zack: once you get the freezing line, we're even talking the upstate. everybody getting below that 32 degree mark. all of that precipitation is going to bring us snow.

however, ice beforehand. we could be talking about power outages. the weight on the trees. the wind is also going to be a problem. >> jason: the temperatures are going to be right around freezing initially. a lot to watch here, guys. we'll have the updated snow fall and ice totals for you in just a bit. and when we start to dig out of this when better weather comes, stick around. >> tammy: staying off the road is your best bet. >> frank: for those of you that have to get out, news 13's evan donovan has some tips of how to trip. >> tammy: evan, where's a good place to start? have enough food at home. if we're talking about your car, start. make sure you have enough tread. in the next half hour i'll show penny. you also want to make sure

>> frank: the looming storm also threatens upstate residents. forecast calls for icy conditions and a few inches of snow that has greenville county officials on standby. residents are urged to stock up on necessary supplies and stay off the roads when the storm hits. >> with the ice, i mean, you could be going as slow as you want to and still slide off the road. so it's scary. it might not be you. somebody else might be sliding and hit your car and throw you off the road. then you're stuck in the freezing cold. you gotta wait for someone to come get you. it's really dangerous. i don't drive in it, period. >> frank: what you should be doing to prepare for possible outages. >> tammy: some of our western counties are dealing with slick conditions right now. >> frank: jaclyn, the primary roads are in good shape. it's the secondary ones that are causing problems. >> jaclyn: frank, jackson, madison, are dealing with those

use extra caution on those secondaries if you live in any of these saers areas. if you're heading towards i-240 soon, you can see delays last through to charlotte street. so avoid that spot if you can. we're also dealing with an accident downtown on patton and north street. crews are heading to the scene now. that's a look at your on time traffic report brought to you by debruhl's used car superstore. >> tammy: a smaller clipper storm has already caused major issues in washington d.c. less than two inches of snow fell last night. but all around the capitol region today, there were traffic accidents and gridlock as well as last night. even the presidential motorcade was caught on the streets for over an hour. dc's mayor apologized for the city's poor response. >> we are very sorry for inadequate response. we believe that we did not provide adequate resources at a

news but it can't handle uncertainty. not knowing where the bottom is in oil, causes a lot of angst among real professional money managers. >> frank: they're worried it could trigger a slow down here in areas like construction, technology, and manufacturing. uber and lift will soon have new competition. >> tammy: general motors announced it's jumping in to the car sharing service. it expects to launch additional programs. gm plans on offering rental hubs with lift. >> frank: new business in downtown asheville like an old

now your news 13 skywatch weather. >> jason: well i hope you've made your preparations already left. overnight tonight, the rain snow to freezing rain and also snow, heavy that snow will begin later on. crippling storm. we are talking serious accumulations one foot or more of snow is likely for many of us here in the mountains as we end the day on friday. storms pass a little bit. it doesn't really change the forecast as much.

were moving north of i-85. the worse conditions will be tomorrow. our storm here in western north carolina. highest severe for snow because that's the biggest impact we'll have. ice will have moderate impact. the wind is going to be an impact, too. a moderate to high impact because the wind will certainly aid in dropping some trees and branches down on those powerlines. upstate impact, snow still pretty high. it's going to be a major impact because of the lack of equipment to kind of scrape it off. ice will be a big impact there.

folks, you're not urged to. an emergency kit. things like blankets. things like snacks, water. cell phone. you can. tell someone where you're going. be prepared for some power helpful hints. cell phone blanket. sand and kitty litter good to we're going to see temperatures drop far enough down in to the mountains. snow fall totals look like this. plus on here because there's always someone who gets more. balsams, nantahalas, yancey, mitchell, avery county, you're in line for that much. southwest mcdowell and northern mcdowell and down through northwest rutherford. the dark blue 8 to 12 inches. polk, rutherford county. here's a stripe of four to eight inches in the upstate. areas north of i-85. we're thinking 4 to 8 inches will do it for you.

spartanburg and cherokee. south of i-85, ice more prominent, especially as you go south in greenville county, laurens, abbeville county. here's your ice forecast. i think this is a little overdone but we could see up to half an inch of ice. lows tonight dropping down in to the 20s. cold enough for the snow and ice to begin and start to stick in the morning. temperatures will go only in the 30s tomorrow. below freezing all day in asheville, hendersonville. you'll get a little closer to freezing in the southern mountains but stay in the 20s in the northern mountains. we could see snow fall rates an inch per hour in some cases. still chances of snow likely early in the day. and then we go warmer as we dig out and start to see a melting take place in to monday. high 48.
