now from western north carolina's news leader, this is news 13 at 5:30. >> frank: we want to get right to chief meteorologist jason boyer. >> jason: we're seeing about a foot of snow and by the end of it we're going to see well over a foot in many places like we expected. the only places that have really been surprising. again, this is how tricky it gets down here. not much in graham. that's been a little more of a surprise for us. the idea solution really coming to fruition for us here in terms of snow fall. look at the bands here. jackson and transylvania. this is going to move right up here from the southwest to the northeast and hammer these areas with another couple inches of snow in the next hour or two. macon county, you're getting in the south end of the county. highlands, franklin missing out

same thing in the french broad river valley, a break. all that snow is going to work back over us shortly. mostly a break until you get down in to the southern end of the county. and new snows developing. north of waynesville for magagie valley, towards cataloochee. big picture. this is still to come. this is the upper energy with this storm swinging in through middle tennessee slowly. all of that has to come through tonight. that's major snow again for a lot of areas across the mountains and even down through the lower upstate. leicester carpet sales news13 sky cam network. there it is, 23 degrees the black mountains. same deal in cold springs ranch. you could see the break in the snowfall for now. in buncombe, madison county, a foot. be careful.

balsam gap a little break now at 2727 it's very cold and it's going to get colder. more freezing here. mostly just ice for those folks. >> zack: that's right. as you make your way down to the upstate, we were seeing sleet accumulations, ice accumulations. this is incredible. for those in western buncombe, we have a report of 15 inches. a few are going to be approaching that as jason just mentioned, there's a few more bands. the majority of the area is still over half a foot for everyone. >> jason: chesney, landrum, that's surprising. >> zack: there's other implications to be talking about. we're going to be looking at wind as we make our way in to tomorrow. sustained above 15 to 20 miles per houu especially in the ridge tops, 30 to maybe even 40 miles per hour.

couldn't make the crest of long shoals road. and if this driver was spinning his wheel, antonio johnson didn't stand a chance. >> the driver knows best. should have stayed at the truck stop four miles down the road. i wouldn't be stuck in this position. >> reporter: while he was working, his destination was closed. johnson wasn't alone. a quarter mile behind him was eric cisco. >> there was a sheet of ice at the truck stop and then it laid three inches of snow on top of that. and then i took off and this is as far as i got. >> reporter: his mistake? mistake. if i kept rolling, instead of being in the ditch or the intersection down there, i stopped here. >> reporter: a lot of other drivers were forced to do the same, abandoning cars on the highway. the line for help is long. tow truck drivers say it's a

>> good thing i filled my truck up this morning. >> reporter: long shoals road was shut down as drivers slowly backed out of the icy conditions. but not inform giving advice. >> if there's ice, i recommend everybody pull over. >> it's better to stay right here, let things melt and ease on. no damage done. no light posts down. no signs torn down and no injuries. >> reporter: it seemed to be just a tough area for trucks with the industrial business park just up the hill. in fact, they just snapped the chain on this truck trying to pull this other truck out. many of the truck drivers i spoke with today say it could now be monday before they get back up. plenty of problems here. >> tammy: news 13's frank kracher joins us live now from

frank, you followed road crews all day. what's it looking like right now? >> frank: it depends on the time of day you're talking about, tammy. earlier in the morning it was treacherous treacherous. a break in the snow pretty much midday and the plows were able to catch up. here's the situation we're talking about now. you can see that thermometer. down. that means these roads are going to start getting slick again. the slush that's out there right now that you see is starting to freeze up. it will get treacherous. midnight. they have 1200 miles of road in buncombe county that they have to keep scraping over and over falling. they're working in 12-hour shifts. they say they hope to have secondary roads cleared off or to begin clearing those secondary roads off some time tomorrow.

all the time to stay off the roads unless you have to be out there driving. to use as much caution as you possibly can. that is the casese again tonight. it's going to get slick and it is going to be treacherous. reporting live in asheville, frank kracher, news 13. >> frank: a lot of trouble spots for a lot on the roads. >> tammy: jaclyn, there are a few weather related wrecks. >> jaclyn: if you're heading out toward i-240 soon, take it slow. there is a crash on the east bound side near the bowen bridge. a crash just before the brevard road exit. let's take a look at the big picture just to give you an idea of how the roads are looking in our area. parts of i-26 and i-40 were shut down earlier this morning. but those interstates are back open right now. the side roads are the big problem spots at the moment. remember we do have those

>> we've got nurses, physicians, ultrasound tech. anything that might come up, they're here for the next three days just in case the roads are a little messy sunday morning. >> rex: about 30 staff members spent thursday night and they'll do it again and again to ensure patient safety. that safety requires keeping the hospital emergency area and parking lot clear of snow. >> you have to really keep the sidewalks. >> rex: this snow fall will make travel difficult for a while. >> it's very slick. if you don't have to be out, i'd advise you to stay home. because it's really bad. the roads is. >> rex: snow makes for some pretty picture.

parkway is shut down. we've seen light snow, heavy snow. we've seen a variety of things. even though we have a bit of a lull now in haywood county, m me is expected. colder temperatures are expected as we go in to night fall and we could see some more freezing on wet pavement down there on the smoky mountain expressway. be aware of all of that. we're not out of the woods just yet. rex hodge, news 13. >> frank: the slick conditions are also causing trouble on the roads in henderson county. kimberly king is live. kim, you've seen people have trouble right behind you. >> kim: frank, you've got that exactly right. we've been out here for much of the day. folks have been doing well on i-26. sometimes it's been a little slow, coming to a crawl.

this ramp, we have seen an 18-wheeler stuck here for about 20 minutes trying to get up the ramp. he finally got up the road. on my right behind me, on i-26, this is going toward asheville. this 18-wheeler has been sitting here for about 45 minutes now. we're not really seeing too many drivers out on the roadway. the majority of 18-wheelers, some personal cars. first i want to show you this video we shot earlier today of basically a rescue out on i-26. this is the scene, a driver in what we think is a front-wheel drive volvo. the truck showed up, he pulled over. folks got out and pushed that driver on the road and on their way they went. we spoke with a driver coming north from south carolina about the conditions. >> the northern end of 25 is pretty slick.

we've seen a good many people set on the side road and they couldn't go. we just kept praying, lord, keep us moving. >> kim: this is what i was talking about, about the ramp. this is that 18-wheeler. he could not get up the ramp here on upward road. his wheels kept spinning on the slick ramp. he eventually got up. coming up at 6 o'clock, we will take a look at hundreds of duke trucks. why they headed out of asheville to help others in the area. reporting live, kimberly king, news 13. >> frank: the winter storm hitting the mountains is also causing issues up and down the east coast. coming up, which storms are being coated in sleet and snow. >> tammy: but first, take a look

the dow ending at 16,093. the nasdaq gained 19 today to close at 4591. >> tammy: a winter storm, this winter storm that we're talking east coast. >> frank: virginia, maryland, pennsylvania and tennessee all under a state of emergency. nashville, tennessee. drivers had to get out and push their cars due to the slippery conditions. temperatures there are expected the night. >> tammy: and freezing rain and snow have led to a slew of accidents in charlotte. take a look at bank of america stadium which is coated with snow. there's a tarp under that snow and the field will be ready for the playoff game against the cardinals this sunday. go cam. >> frank: glad to hear that. drivers are urged to stay off

it rates in some places up to 1 to 3 inches an hour in some areas. weather officials don't expect this storm to leave west virginia until sunday. our area is getting a lot of snow and it's not over yet. >> tammy: no, it's not. and i think it might be one, jason, to go in to the books? >> jason: the blizzard of 93, that's still one i don't think we'll touch here even with this storm. 18.2 inches in asheville. we're not going to get there. 24 degrees in asheville. it's the cold. that is a big factor tonight. freezing roadways is a given. even with salt on these roads. again, higher elevations will be much higher than that.

others, where's the snow. that's the way this is played out, folks. the southwestern mountains, you have been spared a lot of the snow. it's going to be coming in areas. temperatures are going to drop a little more for for cherokee, swain, macon county. this is the heaviest band over oconnee, jackson is getting it. leicester and eventually clive and candler as well. bands working over northern portions of haywood county. here's that band again as i mentioned. north of waynesville, maggie valley. but you're going to get more of it. look at all of this back behind the system. this is the upper level part spinning back here that's going to swing east.

good snows even through the eveving. even in the overnight. even in to early tomorrow. what you have on the ground now, add at least a couple of inches, if not four or five inches to that equation. here's what you need to know and what to expect. overnight periods of snow. saturday morning, the snow shifts a little farther east and north. saturday afternoon and evening, the snow will go back to the northwest and shift towards the mountains. mostly the tennessee border counties as the storm pulls farther to the north and east. leicester carpet sales news13 sky cam network. we're at mount pisgah camp ground. hard to see here but this little bit right here, this little ridge, this is a bank of snow. just looking at it over a foot easily up there at nearly 5,000 feet. storm threat remains highest for snow. that's our severe threat in the mountains. we still have it coming down. ice and sleet threat, really those are dropping. the wind threat is still a big deal. as the winds kick up, we're

in the upstate, still have that snow threat moderate. there's the potential for more accumulating ice and power outages. it's dangerous to almost impossible travel. life threatening. have an emergency kit, shovels, blankets. power goes out for many of us, especially rural locations. here's the storm track. goes northeast, hammers places along the appalachian train. there it is on the future cast. break overnight. but here comes the snow showers for the northwestern corner of the mountains and it's really going to snow off and on almost all day tomorrow before we start to quiet down and get sunshine back in the forecast some time in to sunday. here's your snow fall future cast. how much more are we going to
