carolina's news leader, this is news 13 at 6:00. >> frank: a major warm up is helping melt all that snow and it'll be warmer tomorrow. but there are still some there. tonight. we also have a few school closings for tomorrow including henderson county. we're updating all of them across the bottom of your screen. we continue the live team coverage with karen wynne. what a difference a day makes. >> karen: talk about a big warm up. 40 has never seemed so warm. we are well above freezing right now. much of the day we were above freezing, at least during the afternoon. we hit a high of 47 but we've seen the temperatures drop back down. we just dropped six degrees in the past hour. we're down to 40 in asheville. still warmer in burnsville,

temperatures are going to continue to drop back below freezing. we can see on the lester carpet sales sky cam network, still plenty of snow on the ground. some of it melting off today with the temperatures going well above freezing. but tonight, as we fall below freezing, this is going to refreeze in the form of black ice making for very slick road conditions. radar right now we can see it's all clear. clear skies we enjoyed today. the winds still a little bit breezy in some locations. in asheville light winds out of the north at 6 miles per hour. your evening planner should include bundling up. we're going to cool back down. down to that freezing mark at 9:00 and into the upper 20s by 11:00. widespread black ice anywhere in the mountains as we go on into the late night and on into tomorrow morning. we look at the evening planner in the up state.

bit longer to drop down to that freezing mark but you'll get there before the night is over. 37 by 9:00. 34 by 11:00. some patchy black ice not out of the question for you, either. coming up we'll talk about how long this should remain a problem for the monday morning commute and warmer temperatures in the forecast. >> frank: those high winds bring down a very big tree in henderson county that nearly crushed a disabled man in his home. kimberly king is at the acorn manner mobile home park. when did this happen? reporter: frank, at 6:30 last night johnny bland was inside his home with his daughter. they heard the winds gusting and knew something went wrong when the roof collapsed behind me. you can see how this tree, it's got to be 40-50 feet tall went through the mobile home and johnny was right inside. as i mentioned, it happened around 6:30.

you can see on the video it is completely uprooted. johnny bland is disabled. he recently had neck surgery. he literally crawled out on his hands and knees. his daughter was on the other side of the trailer. the storm kept her from driving home to tennessee last night. >> i just took offset to go home. i turned around because the roads got so bad and came and stayed with him. i'm so glad i was here. i really am. it's a blessing, in a way. reporter: a blessing that homeless. the red cross they say has been a tremendous help putting them up in a hotel. i want to show you this tree again as the sun sets tonight. the roof is collapsed here. the home was unoccupied and a friend of johnny's was able to get him in this mobile home for a reasonable price.

from him and find out why he is afraid even though his life is saved because of this accident and his daughter inside. reporting live from henderson county, kimberly king. >> frank: we're learning about three deaths in the up state all caused by the storm. the bodies of an elderly couple found in their home. cause of death carbon monoxide poisoning. the couple lost power and put a generator inside their garage. also in greenville, a man walking along a road was hit. a driver slid on a frozen spot and killed him. it's a big night tonight for panthers fans. what a day for people who have been snowed in. many are leaving their homes making their way to parties for the big game. justin hinton continues our coverage where folks are starting to show up for the nfc championship. this is a nice break for folks.

out of the house and do something. what better way than to celebrate the sun a little bit earlier. saying good-bye to the snow and making their way out here to watch that big game where the panthers are taking ton cardinals. the scene across much of asheville looked like this as crews continue the clean up process. they focus on the priority roads. the focus was on the more heavily traveled roads. those in the neighborhood were happy to see a truck come through and clean up some of the snow. for others now is the time to head out and watch the pan they ares take on the cardinals. >> it's great. not to be stuck in the house. it's fantastic. we've been in the house for about three days. it's been great. >> justin: he came to town yesterday from charlotte. he city got more ice than western north carolina making

we've seen some cardinal fans here, as well. we should note that there will be more about the game coming up in sports. >> frank: getting back to business in asheville. it's been taking an effort. the storm shut down most of the area for the entire weekend. hope hans lman shows us the big dig. >> we hope for a little cabin fever. reporter: cabin fever is running high. taking all that snow to it's melting point. >> ready to get out and have social interaction. make some more money. reporter: for two days most of the central business district has been shut down. >> we knew we had to open. we were hoping the sun will melt some of the snow. reporter: sunday morning was no day of rest for employees eager to get back to work.

we count on the weekends in the winter months to carry us through. reporter: scott says some of his employees couldn't make it out of their homes over the weekend. >> today was an interesting decision. some can make et and some can't. we'll open with minimum staff and see if anybody comes out. reporter: now if the crowds don't make it the sun already has.

your car. week. reporter: today life is returning to the streets after an almost total transportation shut down. people forced to walk in the road to get to work. >> i have to go there and clear the sidewalks. >> i work in a vet hospital. reporter: new york measured more than 26 inch, just shy of the all time record. in the washington, d.c. region, plow crews are working around the clock from the highways to the runways, desperately trying to get the airports open. the city counted 17 inches. the surrounding area covered by more than two and a half feet. this practice facility for the washington redskins football team, the dome crushed by the weight of the snow. a similar story outside philadelphia. this church roof buckling and crashing into the chapel below. >> i opened up the door and looked up and just a gaping hole

reporter: in new jersey coastal communities dealing with the one two punch of snow and icy flood waters. >> this usually happens in the summer. reporter: but so far no major damage. >> take your time if you drive around but you're free to go out. reporter: here in new york the sunways and streets are back open. airports will not be fully operational until monday morning at the earlier. abc news, new york. >> frank: a strong earthquake hit alaska today causing an explosion and evacuations. the 7.1 quack was near cooke. one home was damaged in an explosion caused by the jolt. thirty others evacuated as first responders tried to fix a gas leak. no reports of injuries. there was no tsunami threat because the quake was 50 miles

was dumped by the >> frank: majority leader mccarthy says the u.s. house of representatives will not be in session this week due to the severity of the storm. that tops tonight's newsreel. it was supposed to be a short week. monday votes were already canceled. house democrats were scheduled to head to baltimore. there was no announcement made about that event but vote on an override of the president's veto on obamacare repeal will be rescheduled for some time in february. as the storm roared up the eastern seaboard it caused this roof in virginia to cave in. the national weather service puts preliminary snow totals at 17 inches in fredericksburg. no one was hurt in that collapse.

teenager decided to get out his phone and recorded a cool time lapse. check this out. 15-year-old chase higgins lives in washington, d.c. he put his phone to the living room window about 1:00 on friday afternoon as the storm was beginning to hit the dc area. he left it in that wind until late on saturday night. look at it go. snow in a hurry. what do you think? meteorologist karen wynne is standing by. that's a tough act to follow. >> karen: we saw a lot of that snow melt a similar opposite time lapse. then, of course, all that snow melt refreezing tonight. the top headline is black ice. an issue overnight into tomorrow morning. soon enough we're going back into the 50s for high temperatures. however, we do have a light

cool below freezing tonight. right now in asheville we are well above freezing for now. 40 degrees. a light wind out of the north-northwest at 6 miles per hour. in the up state, 43 degrees, clear with a light breeze and even you in the up state that had that measurable snow, you could see black ice overnight, too. we look at the bigger picture. we have high pressure that built in making for a sunny day we have today. we have a system on the horizon. it is out across the central plains right now but this is expected to move in here and bring us a light wintery mix beginning on tuesday. as we put the future cast in motion, overnight tonight. we are going to be mainly clear and calm and very cold. after the sun goes down, we're going to see our temperatures drop below freezing quickly as we go through the night. of course, a lot of that black ice is going to form and then

yes, it's going to be a very sliply one. we see a few clouds at 6:00 a.m. mainly high, thin clouds that quickly move out then a day of sunshine to enjoy tomorrow. once we go above that freezing mark it's going to be nicer. in the 50s to finish out monday afternoon. as we go into tuesday morning, we see a little bit of light rain. 6:00 a.m. on tuesday, i'm thinking this may be a little bit on the low side. we could see a bit of freezing rain as early as tuesday morning, and then regular rain tuesday evening. but then tuesday later on at night when we drop below freezing, we could see another round of freezing rain and a wintery mix on wednesday. overnight tonight 21 for the low in asheville... 26 in greer. and black ice. tomorrow mainly sunny. what a come back we have with

nfc championship game. once you stop talking about snow, the next thing people want to talk about is the panthers and their chances of going to the superbowl. luke says charlotte is ready. >> the atmosphere in charlotte is electric. it's unlike anything we've seen this season. the first ever championship game at bank of america. a lot of the talk before the game was the field conditions. as you can see, these guys worked hard. the field is in great shape. it's going to be ready to go. the players will be ready to play and as we found out moments ago the fans are ready for the action. panther fans of all ages doing their pregame routines. hot food on the grill, creative head ware and homemade signs. all part of the experience. >> what do you think the atmosphere is going to be like inside the stadium? >> very electric and high key and the fans were in it so much last week.

atmosphere is going to be like in that stadium? >> it's going to be loud and exciting. people are fired up for this. they are going to hope the panthers kick butt. >> we're going to scream our hardest and lose our voice. it's going to be great. reporter: the fans have a few more minutes to finish off their meals before the championship game gets started. the panthers and the cardinals are scheduled to kick off at 6:40. we'll bring you highlights and post game coverage tonight. reporting from the bank of america stadium in charlotte, news 13 sports. afc title game in denver. broncos lead it 20-12 with about one fifty to go in the game. they play the winner of this game in the superbowl on february 7th in california. college hoops, north carolina and virginia tech. they were tough today and take the lead. powering his way up and lead by two. carolina comes back.
