3 the wintry weather is still creating challenges for first responders in parts of the mountains. enka-candler firefighters say they are relying on four-wheel drive vehicles before pulling out tankers. one woman says they went above and beyond the call of duty to help her in a medical emergency in the snowstorm. they shoveled snow and ice off her stairs and walked her to the ambulance, which could not make it up the hill. 3 jana bowman, arden the stuff they were doing out there, you've got to have a love for that job, you really do. for them to be out there doing that with the weather like this is kind of incredible. firefighters say when they have to put chains on their tires, they cannot drive faster than 35 miles an hour,

3 3 a popular stretch of the blue ridge parkway remains closed- indefinately. the commuter stretch running between highway 70 and highway 191 is still under four to six inches of heavy, wet snow. crews plan to work every day, including weekends, to get that snow cleared as quickly as possible. no word yet on when that will be. 3 it's going below freezing every single night. so all the thawing that we get, freezes right up underneath all the snow that's still on the roads, and with a really shady section of road, it takes awhile. while the parkway is closed to commuters, visitors are welcome to sled or ski on the snow nearby. 3 3 3 we have new information this morning... about a deadly wreck in haywood county we first told you about last night at 11. the highway patrol now tells us 50-year- old johnny davis, of waynesville, was killed near the clyde exit on highway 74. troopers say just before 9 last night, he hit an embankment and was thrown from his truck. he later died at the hospital. troopers say no other vehicles were involved.

factor. 3 3 3 3 3 breaking overnight... someone opens fire at a homeless camp in seattle... killing two people and injuring three others. it happened at a long-standing encampment known as "the jungle." police are still looking for the shooter. they are actively searching the woods for two people of interest and piecing together information about the incident. 3 "as a result of those shots fired, officers responded, found five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. one individual has been pronounced on-scene here. one individual has been pronounced deceased at harborview medical center." officers believe the victims were targeted and they do not think other homeless people are at risk. 3 3 3 arrests, gunfire and a militia member killed. the situation in eastern oregon turns deadly overnight. f-b-i agents and troopers set up a roadblock to arrest militia leader ammon bundy and a team of occupiers. reid binion has the new details.

"honestly, there are things more important than your life, and freedom is one of them." oregon protester lavoy finicum -- telling n-b-c news that he would rather die than be arrested...tuesday night, finicum was killed......as authorities arrested protest leader ammon bundy and several members of the armed group occupying the malheur national wildlife refugea&officials say it started with a trafic stop, and that finicum and bundy's brother - ryan - refused to surrender.the bundy ranch claimed on facebook that finicum "had his hands up and was shot 3 times."officials.. haven't commented much beyond saying it's not clear who fired first.ryan bundy suffered minor injuries -- finicum died at the scene.he had been one of the most outspoken members of the armed group......that took over the refuge earlier this month to protest federal land policies. "hello america, this is lavoy finicum. we are not going anywhere. we're here to do a job."tuesday's incident ended with ammon and ryan bundy and three followers in federal custody on felony conspiracy charges.three other activists were arrested separately.i'm

3 a key asheville committee endorses a plan to turn a piece of city property along haywood street into a park. the land is across from saint lawrence basilica and the u-s cellular center. during the city council meeting, asheville's planning and economic development committee recommended that a park committee be created. on a full public engagement process for haywood street properties and it's something forward to to develop and overall vision for this area at this point - council has not officially voted to build the park. 3 3 3 we are learning new details why a developer wants to delay a proposed apartment complex in south asheville. rusty pulliam told city council members he now wants to break ground on the complex in 20-18, and finish building them by 20-20. that is six months before a scheduled widening of the roads for that same area. pulliam believes that will resolve traffic concerns raised by those living near the proposed site. zoning voted for 6 to 1is the fact that the apartment project i'm proposing to do on this side is one of the lowest traffic impacts that could ever be built on this corner" pulliam plans to present the new plans in april. 3 3 in this morning's carolina roundup... a "go fund me" page has been set up to get a popular bar-b-q restaurant in raleigh back up and running again. a driver lost control on the ice over the weekend and crashed through "the 'ole time barbecue". the owner thinks it will be about a month before they can re-open. the driver hit the building so hard some of the cinder blocks landed on the opposite side of the building. 3 12:20:08 "he hit the main panel box head-on and for the power line box not to blow up and set the building on fire is a miracle. or hit to get electrocuted in his own vehicle." the driver was not hurt. the owner hopes his go- fund-me page will help him open sooner than expected.

3 four people were arrested during a meeting at u-n-c chapel hill. demonstrators protested the hiring of former u-s education secretary margaret spellings to head the university of north carolina system. they objected to spellings' work for president george w. bush, and her work for the parent company of the for-profit "university of phoenix." the protesters were charged with disrupting an official meeting and resisting an officer. 3 3 a water main break shuts down part of a highway in wake forest. a 12-inch pipe ruptured... gushing water all over the road. then the road itself also started to break apart from the pressure of the water. a detour was set up while it was fixed. 3 3 3 in this morning's newsreel... a deputy in new orleans is in critical condition after being shot during a drug raid. the deputy was serving a warrant as part of a federal drug task force when he was shot. he underwent surgery. the suspect is charged with attempted first degree murder and drug offenses. 3 four years after a high-speed chase that killed two unarmed people, six cleveland police

137-shots were unloaded into the car. the officers were fired for creating a crossfire situation that could have endangered officers. six other officers face suspensions, and another one retired. 3 a protester who held a 30- year peace vigil outside the white house has died. the washington post reports connnie picciotto died monday at a housing facility for homeless women. the vigil was widely considered to be the longest-running act of political protest in u-s history. a homeless shelter spokesperson says picciotto had recently suffered a fall, but the cause of death was not yet known. 3 u-s customs arrested a man they say tried smuggling live birds, in his pants. the man was a passenger on a flight from cuba to florida. customs and border patrol agents took the man into custody this month at the miami international airport. officials say the papaenger was concealing six exotic birds in a fanny pack, and three more in his groin area. it is a violation of federal law to smuggle live animals
