changing shifts. they are working around the clock to continue clearing snow and ice from the roads. mechanical issues with equipment has hampered their efforts. five of 15 trucks were out of service so d.o.t. offices in neighboring counties are lending equipment. when you have, i think, more snow than other counties did, the issue for us was is traffic getting out, packing it down, basically turn it into a sheet of ice and the snowplows won't cut ice. we have to use our motor to cut and clear the road. >> we spotted thick ice on highway 64. side roads near 691 were some of the worst spots. today's focus for those crews

the majority of western north carolina, we'll make it to the 40's by late afternoon with clearing skies, partly clear through tonight. about 6:00 p.m., 42 degrees expected. here's our headlines indicating comfortable temperatures for now. those cool nights mean another slick commute for some across the region. coming up in my full forecast, we'll talk more about when the 60's will return. it will start to feel like spring again. >> buncombe county deputies need your help finding a person or persons involved in a shooting. it happened at the entrance of pine brook farms development. deputies say someone fired a gun nto the advertising sign at the entrance and bullets hit two occupied homes. luckily no one was hurt or was home. if you have any information, you are asked to call crime stoppers at 255-5050. parents planning an awareness walk in downtown waynesville.

haywood school board plans to possibly close elementary schools. the school has had falling enrollment. if central closes, most schools would go to hazelwood. both are about two miles away. the walk starts at five:30. the school board is set to vote on the closing at its february 8 meeting. >> new information about a deadly wreck in haywood county. we first told you about this last night at 11:00. troopers tell us 50-year-old johnny davis of wanesville was killed on highway 74. troopers say before 9:00 last night he hit an embankment and was thrown from his truck. he later died at the hospital. no other vehicles were involved and they do suspect alcohol was a factor. >> in other news, federal agents are conducting an active investigation following a deadly

my househouse, still a ton of sun. notice through the time lapse, low visibility. we have cloudy conditions and the light rain. things have started to improve quickly in the last couple of hours. 42 degrees, about 3400 feet. radar and satellite does show we no longer have any light rain across the region. from andrews to bryson towards avery county. notice the clouds here, they get lighter and lighter. it gets just light gray, high thin clouds expected for the majority of the afternoon. 2-100ths of an inch of precipitation. our departure still in the positive category, about two-tenths of an inch there. let's talk temperatures, 34 degrees. that's as cool as we got this morning. this is really good news,

we stayed above freezing. there was no threat for the freezing rain besides the snow ground. 27 is normal. it was above normal. right now, we are still at 40 here in asheville. not quite normal for the afternoon hours. forest city, 49. 47 in morganton. still in the 30's in our northern mountains from boone to burnsville. winds right now picked up at 10 miles an hour in asheville. 16 in boon. this front that moved through, it also took the precipitation out of our region. we are seeing clearing skies. snapshot, we'll see clouds throughout the day but not a ton. dinner time still seeing the clearing. maybe a few showers further south of greenville and into tomorrow morning. the majority will not see more rain. into the afternoon hours tomorrow, we'll start to see

temperatures will be around freezing. mountains. here. for the majority of us, not too exciting in the short term forecast. some clearing, 44 degrees in asheville today. 28 degrees, dry and chilly tonight. into the upstate, 52, still pretty mild today. cloudyier conditions. seven-day forecast, this is looking pretty nice tomorrow. back down to the low 40's. overnight lows will be cold. we'll continue to see that snow melt across much of the region, especially on the secondary roads. since temperatures will be back below freezing. it could mean slick conditions tomorrow morning. besides that, wow, look at this weekend compared to last weekend. a foot of snow. now we are talking about sunshine and 60.

>> americans united announce they will allow travelers concern about the virus to cancel or postpone their trips to affected areas by the mosquito born virus. it will include all areas mentioned in the cdc alert offering the option to rebook or receive a full refund. american policy coverage to four cities in central america. america will allow customers to receive a refund if they provide a doctor's note saying they are unable to travel to those cities because they are pregnant. following oprah win free tweet proclaiming she lost 26 points while eating bread every day on the weight watcher's program, the company stock skyrocketed more than 20%. it eventually closed at $130.29 a share. good news for oprah who is taking into account her 10% stock in the company as well as stock options, that earned her an whopping 19.2 million dollars on tuesday alone.
