>> stop the washington bull and let's get things done. >> aaron: the moderators pressed the candidates on their electability. they almost all went after hillary clinton. marco rubio did mention bernie sanders. >> darcel: he'll join the cruz campaign to try to drum up support for the candidates. developing tonight, troopers say there was a high speed chase that ended in a crash on i-40 tonight in buncombe county. it happened just after six. the suspect's vehicle crashing at the enka candler exit. troopers say no one was hurt. we're working to get more information on what happened. we'll keep you updated right here on wlos.com and our news 13 app. >> larry: new tonight, a water main break shut down a portion of sweeten creek road. it happened around 6 o'clock near moe's barbecue. the water department says a pipe broke and water continued to

they're calling this a major break. they say they won't be able to tell what caused it until they dig up the pipe. >> we're getting kind of used to it. this is like the third flooding in three months. just worry about your cars and the safety of other people. >> larry: once the pipe was shut off, the standing water drained through the storm water system. as that pipe broke, we were covering a meeting with the storm water services manager. the public works department is in the middle of assessing which areas need improvements. tonight, they were looking for input from people. construction on projects could begin the summer of 2017 with the goal to reduce localized flooding. if you want to share your thoughts, you can call the public works department. >> darcel: shots were fired outside a home in flat rock prompting two schools to go on lockdown. it happened around 11:00 a.m. outside a home on lamp lighter lane. no one was hit.

hillendale elementary and flat rock middle schools as a precaution. >> they do everything possible to keep the kids safe. the kids are safe here at school because of the procedures that the schools have. >> darcel: deputies say they're looking for a man who is driving a late model lincoln town car. it has a vinyl top and a half wheel design on the rear. if you have any information call the henderson county sheriff's office. a man was arrested after leading police on a chase overnight. it began on i-40 near the canton exit and ended in buncombe county after the driver wrecked near the farmers market exit. deputies say it began when they tried to stop billy galamore for speeding. >> larry: the haywood county school board is expected to decide whether to close central elementary school in just a couple of weeks. parents, students and staff

cafeteria last night to talk about it. they asked questions and now those questions have been answered. justin hinton joins us live from the school with this update. justin, are they satisfied with the answers they're hearing? >> justin: yes and no. his tone has changed a bit because he says he now has a better understanding of the financial situation. but at the same time he says he's not throwing in the towel quite yet. some people who didn't live in haywood county came out to show their support. the board recorded 19 questions from audience members and answered them today. the question about selling other buildings, capacity of the school and more. >> after the meeting i spoke with some of the board members and what they will do to understand a little bit better

that may be why it sounds like a little bit of a shift in what i'm saying. >> justin: he e-mailed school board members this morning. the school board is expected to make a decision at its board meeting on february 8th. if you'd like to read the questions and the answers from last night's meeting, just go to our website. i posted the links there at wlos.com. justin hinton, news 13. >> darcel: flint, michigan's water crisis nearly two years later, is affecting thousands. the systems water system became badly damaged. so news 13 is looking at how asheville is avoiding that same crisis. jerrika, you talked with the water resources director. >> jerrika: yes, and what's happening in flint is near and dear to his heart. but it's also a lesson for the water resources department here in asheville.

biggest man-made disasters in recent years. something flint, michigan's governor is under fire for. switching to a new water source has left children with high levels of lead in their blood. >> you're saying there's 100 children as of now and there could be many more. >> and we're assumeing that. >> jerrika: what happened in flint is the worst case scenario and something they've had an eye on. >> trying to understand what's going on there. make sure that all of our processes are in place to try to prevent things like that from happening. but that's really what we do on a daily basis. >> jerrika: preventive measures are key. for asheville, that first step is not having lead pipes. >> it's incredible how good it tastes. it is a great water. >> jerrika: testing water regularly from its source to

important. >> done daily. and some of the tests that are done, for example, in homes maybe every two to three years. >> jerrika: also customer feedback is vital to stopping a problem in its tracks. so if you spot or taste a problem, the water resources department wants to know about it because they take pride in this water. but what's going on in flint is something asheville can only hope will run out. >> i hope they get there sooner than later. >> jerrika: the water resources director says they replace pipes as necessary. while also paying close attention to especially old pipes. reporting live in downtown asheville, jerrika insco, news 13. >> larry: the snow is melting, that's some good news. but what's underneath it could be creating a problem, pot holes. all that snow and ice that melts seeps under the pavement.

jet stream pattern, this is the idea. we look at some kinks in the armor, if you will. this is one right here. this trough is digging out some unsettled weather along with cold. in is bringing down the chill for us, too. that's just a taste of some cold air tomorrow. but the longer range is looking pretty good. here's a big ridge of high pressure. that's sliding east so our temperatures will begin to warm up significantly. and a little moisture. a little shower activity earlier on in the afternoon for the upstate. wind advisories go in to effect here. gusts up to 45 miles an hour in these counties. the strongest gusts again, yancey, mitchell, avery, northern end of mcdowell and burke counties.

cold tomorrow. look at these future casts. wind chills, dropping in to its teens. 9 o'clock in the morning. teens in asheville. looking for single digits in some of the highest elevations. but that's brief. we start to warm things up a little more. forecasts in terms of any rain or snow. it's only a 20% chance tomorrow in asheville we get anything. no chance saturday or sunday. a 30% chance of rain come monday as our temperatures really begin to warm up. 50% chance of any snow for you in the mountain communities near the tennessee border. no chance for you on saturday or sunday. dry weekend. 31 degrees right now. the wind is certainly going to be felt and it certainly will play a role in how it feels. 40 degrees with a calm wind now. the wind chill 40 as well.

this is our storm pattern again driving southeast ward. so this cold front over the great lakes will sweep quickly down. even though we'll get snow showers early in the day for the high elevations, it will clear out area wide. around this area of high pressure, our winds will begin to shift coming south and west. warmer weather that carries in to next week. a closer view to get you an idea of what's happening. there are the snow showers. by day break, again, darker blues. it's gone by the afternoon. and the wind is with us from the northwest all day long. temperatures tonight in the 20s from newland down through the french broad river valley and southwestern mountains. franklin 27. down over the upstate tomorrow,

warmer than us in the mountains. foothill communities out there towards rutherfordton. tryon 50. 49 morganton. mid 30s in newland. and in the french broad river valley, low to mid 40s will do it. our southern mountains not bad but still chilly. mid to upper 40s expected there in graham and swain county. sunshine those days and cloud up. chances of rain back monday. wetter by tuesday. we get colder again by the middle and latter part of next week. in the upstate, you're going for 60s, too, saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday. not bad at all with the rain chances highest for you also on

got in to a tug of war with the guy. he didn't even give up when the suspect pulled a gun on him. after the struggle, the robber took off. police are still looking for him. a baby lemur has been born. it happened right in the middle of last week's snowstorm. one of the vet techs had to walk two miles in the snow to make sure she was there to take care for the guy. le lemurs are the most threatened animals on earth. >> larry: big news for western carolina university and its football team.
