this after a quick blast of snow fell today in some of our western counties. >> larry: tonight, much of western north carolina is under a winter storm warning. jason boyer starts off our team coverage. >> darcel: jason, will it worsen as we head in to the evening? >> jason: absolutely. as temperatures drop. we were so warm today, anything that fell pretty much melted off. along i-40 we have darker blues indicating snow squalls. not expecting much at all from that accumulation. you get in to the smokys, haywood, even up in to yancey county, there is snow is occurring. leicester carpet sales news13 sky cam network sun working through the clouds. bursts of snow. the sky is almost clear completely. 33 degrees in yancey county. black mountains, you see snow

bursts of moderate snow coming down about an hour ago. we drop three degrees. this temperature will easily get down to freezing. already close to freezing in the higher elevations. winter advisories from 7 o'clock until tuesday. buncombe, avery, macon, clay, and cherokee county. all these counties are under wintnt storm warnings. periods of some snow. light accumulations. watch out for slick roads. i'll tell you more about the changes that lie ahead and how the snow adds up. stick around. >> larry: we have a team of reporters tracking some snow that's already fallen and what's still to come. >> darcel: news 13's karen wynne is in haywood county, and kimberly king in yancey. what are crews doing to gear up for more snow tonight? >> karen: darcel, they're working long hours. they're going to be out all night long to keep the roads safe.

little bit of snow to give one florida family a thrill. it was the first time the kids have ever seen snow. so they snowboarded on soco mountain even though it was not completely covered. even with the additional snow expected tonight, most places won't see nearly the amount of snow we did nearly two weeks ago. this leads to some drivers being complacent or over confident. >> i realize this one may not be as big so they won't take it as seseous. it's going to be cold. so you know, the combination of the two could be bad road conditions. >> karen: bud urges people who don't have to be on the roads tonight, to stay home. if you are traveling, go slow.

what's happening in yancey county. >> darcel: kim, the snow has been off and on. >> kim: darcel, that's exactly right. when i was on the air at 5:30, there was no snow to speak of. but in the last 20 to 30 minutes we have had a few snow flurries. if we pan down, my photographer bob is going to pan down. that's what we have here accumulating at this moment. u.s. highway 19 is currently slick. now the video we took earlier today will show you the biggest flakes that we saw fall in this area. it happened around noon. the flakes were falling steadily over at ball creek elementary. it gave the front yard there a real dusting. school administrators made the call to close school early. parents picked up kids. >> we have just been listening to our central office and the

accidentally shot himself in the head. rex hodge has an update on his condition and the actions a neighbor took right after the gun fired. >> rex: it was a normal saturday afternoon, paul was working on the roof of his trailer when he heard the commotion across the road. i ran in there and he was on the kitchen floor, a pool of blood behind his head. >> rex: 14-year-old christopher cowart had accidentally shot himself. first responders arrived and cowart was flown to mission hospital. his father saysys christopher has swelling on his brain and the next few hours will be critical. three boys were in the house, including one of his friends who called 911 for help. >> we need help. >> rex: they thought the gun was unloaded. >> for some reason there was

eugene carson, moore and chad logan were accused of the families are hoping to reduce the sentence to 20 months probation. >> we have two kids together and i just feel like justice needs to be served. my kids need their dad. the other families need their son. they're loving, caring and -- it's not fair. >> larry: cameron moore's case will go to trial in may. >> darcel: the buncombe county district attorney takes another the da has requested a hearing in pierre griffin ii.

last week on charges of killing alex king, tatianna diz and uhon johnson back in october. an accident claimed the life of a candler man. it happened just south of hominy baptist church. the other driver was taken to the hospital but should be okay. >> larry: happening right now asheville police and buncombe county deputies are joining forces to focus on body cameras. you're looking at a live picture of a meeting that's under way right now to answer questions the public may have. questions like who may see the video and how long will they be keeping the video. asheville police plan to have body cams for 60 officers. 70 are already wearing them. >> we drafted a policy that we

>> larry: a south carolina company says it can help duke energy power western north carolina without building a new power plant. >> darcel: ashley surles joins us live near thehe plant in asheville. ashlea, this plant says duke can just buy their voltage.

this company, columbia energy says they have enough power already, just buy some from us. regulators there are deliberating whether to greenlight the plan duke has proposed to build a new gas plant in asheville as a way of increasing the power supply in the mountains here. using columbias power will mean constructing miles of transmission lines. >> what we have seen is transmission, when it travels from a long ways doesn't provide the reliability. a technical behind the scenes voltage support that is needed to provide not just reliable electricity but high quality electricity that our customers expect. >> ashlea: duke is saying that building a new natural gas plant

for customers. the utilities commission is expected to make a decision on whether duke can go forward building this power plant by the end of this month. i'm ashlea surles, news 13. >> darcel: almost everybody knows what selfie is. >> larry: even me. >> darcel: but have you heard of shelfie? >> larry: i have not. tammy watford explains. >> tammy: guys, it's a one of those should work. students are taking shelfies with their new devices at averys creek elementary school. most of the students know how to use a computer for games and research. they learned how to take a picture, attach it to an e-mail and then send it.

i'll show you how much, now your news 13 skywatch weather. >> jason: we have the flake-o-meter notched up a little bit more as we get more data coming in. not time to buy bread or milk at least in the valleys. but if you're in the high country, you will. heavy bands working over the smokys. working over east tennessee. moderate bands of snow coming in to buncombe county. mcdowell county, yancey. jackson, southern end of the county getting light snow. macon county. you can see these bands working their way west to east. this dark blue shade indicates heavier snow fall from tennessee

the snow in to the higher elevations. moderately high for the winter storm index. wind and cold not as big of a story with this system. it will get windier, though, as we progress in to wednesday. the black ice is going to be a big issue in the high country. as it will in the valleys. snow remelting and freezing will mean black ice. 39 degrees with snow flurries reported at the top of the hour in asheville. north wind at 6 puts our wind chill down to the mid 30s. that wind will begin to pick up tonight. blowing snow in the high country. visibility will be poor. smokys and the blue ridge that we're going to see most of the accumulation. northern transylvania county. the idea is much less farther south of i-40. much more west and north of 26

by wednesday, pretty much done in terms of snowfall accumulations at least by the wednesday afternoon in the mountains. dusting to one inch in the white. that's a good swath here from western transylvania, stretching east in to mcdowell county. burke county, jackson, macon, northern cherokee, clay, and central and southern graham county. asheville could see up to an inch. north of town we go up to three possibly. the highest end three inches in the dark blue. that extends in to southern swain, yancey, mitchell. the turquoise, 3 to 5 inches of snow fall. bulls eye could be 5 to 7 inches. no doubt little impact in the snow department south. teens and 20s for lows tonight. it's going to be cold. highs tomorrow not even getting

whatever falls is going to stick and ice up those roads. 20s in the northern mountains. 40s in the upstate. low at night wednesday in to thursday morning, 12. closer to 40 by friday. drop again for valentine's weekend. down to 10 at night. saturday night the you're going to see 40s most of your seven day forecast. you too in the upstate will feel the chill. >> darcel: a bad night for cam newton and super bowl 50 got worse after the game. stan has some of the interview that has social media turning on the panthers' quarterback. that's next in sports. i'd like for him to become a therapy dog eventually. i figure this is a good start. >> larry: turning household pets in to service dogs. how some people are abusing the

cam newton deep to jeric oh contry. some how it was overruled. it was called incomplete again. that's a bad call. important because instead of being near mid-field, they're deep in their own territory. when this happens, cam goes back to pass, vaughn morris . in the 4th, carolina trails. they're in it. there's the game mvp. loose ball. but the worst part is that, cam does not dive for the ball. you can't question his toughness. he throws his body all year. that is not a good look. peyton manning wins his second super bowl. although he didn't really do a whole lot.
