blowing around in the high country. i'll show you how much more is going to accumulate in those high elevations. >> karen: low snow and low visibility making it a challenge to get around in the mountains. coming up, we'll have the latest on road conditions. it affects our family greatly. >> frank: finally back in the game after severe weather shuts down a local boys and girls club. what's now been done to fix the flooding problems. now from western north carolina's news leader, this is news 13 at 5:30. >> tammy: spotty snow across the mountains today but it was enough to lay down a blanket of white in some areas. >> frank: news 13 viewers sent pictures around the mountains. >> tammy: we'll have a live report on road conditions in just a moment. but we begin with team coverage with chief meteorologist jason boyer.

for tonight? >> jason: more snow. buncombe county getting light snow fall. leicester carpet sales news13 sky cam network we're up at beach mountain parkway. 5,000 feet elevation. and this is avery county. 8 degrees and it's blowing that snow. several inches on the ground. beach mountain itself six inches of snow. here's our leicester carpet sales news13 sky cam network down at pari in rosmond. what a difference here. you can see those low clouds hanging. no accumulation in many places south of i-40. now we go in to graham county, santilla. i-40 right through pines creek. we have lighter snows in to woodlawn, areas around woodland gorge.

6 and a half in marshall outside of spruce pine. two inches in toccoa. all of these purple counties, again, we have wind advisories for more accumulations of snow and icy roads. i'll show you how much to expect here and how cold we'll get. see you again in a few minutes. >> tammy: our live team coverage continues at yancey county where northern mountains picked up snow causing travel headaches. >> frank: karen wynne joins us live just outside of burnsville. karen, where did you see the heaviest snow? >> karen: frank, it's coming down pretty good right here right now. we've seen heaviest snow in madison county. my photographer thought it would be too dangerous to drive the satellite truck. this is one of the heaviest snow bands. by the time we arrived in yancey

this driver from atlanta driving to spruce pine was breathing a sigh of relief. >> the road so far has been in good shape. whatever north carolina is doing is working. i haven't felt the car slip or anything right now. >> karen: we saw many secondary roads completely covered. many of those secondary roads in yancey county were cleared by late afternoon. it was a different story in madison county where we saw the heaviest snow on i-26 in sam's gap. >> the road started getting sketchy. >> karen: madison county resident derrick gosnel. >> my four-wheel drive went out last night. so it's kind of aggravatedingaggravating. i have chains on the back. >> karen: many decided to forego

the snow. >> everybody is in their home watching everybody else try to make it up the driveway. >> karen: madison county schools are closed tomorrow. and chris heaten with the dot says because so much work was done to keep the primary roads clear, many of the secondary roads may not be cleared until tomorrow. >> tammy: new at 5:30, a building shut down by record rain last week finally reopened today. >> frank: the transylvania boys and girls club. news 13's hope hanselman is live in brevard. >> tammy: hope, it's been tough for families who rely on that program. >> hope: it has, tammy. harsh winter weather hitting some of our other counties. but folks around here have had

pretty rough around here all taking a toll on this after school program. them back. we feel like this is home for us and it's home for the kids. >> hope: the boys and girls club sat unusually quiet and empty. employees shut doors again. >> last thursday we were hit with this sudden unexpected sewer line that backed up and pumped sewer water. >> hope: it flooded walls and ruined some carpet. crews are just finishing the dry wall so kids can return to these homes. >> it affects our family greatly. when they rely on us to not just care for their children in afternoons but to help them with their homework and support

and then all the sudden they don't have that and they have to come up with alternate solutions. >> hope: this isn't the first time families have needed to make other arrangements. the building has already had to replace a roof and mold in 2013. >> we feel like our building is in great condition right now and we feel like we have given it the attention it needs. >> hope: this restoration has cost about $10,000 to complete. but it's not as valuable as the program. so to ensure this problem doesn't happen again, the city has put a valve on that problem area and now crews are looking at other lines to make sure that they don't have an issue backing backups in to that building. hope hanselman, news 13.

accused of attacking a marion resident. he was taken to mission hospital for emergency surgery where we remains in the intensive care unit unit. >> tammy: deputies say he kicked in the door of a lake junaleska home last week but ran away when the owner confronted him. miller was arrested last night after deputies say he broke in to another home. north carolina is fining duke energy nearly $7 million for pollution at a coal ash spill. the fine covers violations duke admitted to when it pleaded guilty last may. duke agreed to pay $102 million.

now your news 13 skywatch weather. >> jason: well it's a world of difference from the valleys closer to i-40 all the way to the mountains. and it's just a winter white out in some cases here as you go to the tennessee border. snow over graham county. you've seen bands of it here. toccoa, you've seen light accumulation there. highway 276 here towards maggie valley, northern and central haywood county. madison county, we still have snow coming down. it may not be as heavy as it was earlier in some cases. marshall, hot springs, faust, you're all getting that. light snow bands here right on the south carolina-north carolina border. high elevations of greenville

this is bona fide snow, folks. getting snow fall there and it may add up to a dusting quickly in those areas. watch out as temperatures now been falling. index moderately high for the snow. the wind, cold, and black ice, these are the mountain impacts as you go through tomorrow. it is going to be a mess out there in the higher elevations closer to the tennessee border. we'll have the wind. we'll have the cold. we'll have the black ice, too. as that light wind fall blows around. patches of blue sky at unca campus. still cloudy in asheville. wind chill down to 14. it's going down in to the single digits tonight in terms of wind chills. several disturbances pinwheeling. this continues that northwest flow. anytime it happens and you get enough moisture, it's just rung

that's why the snowfall is so persistent and accumulative, if you will. five to eight inches in some spots. weak system diving through the southern tier. cloud coverage late day. friday, we could have flurries back in the forecast. other than that, it's the snow that we're dealing with tonight that's going to be the big story. snow tonight, snow in the morning. late morning early afternoon that we'll start to see the snow really wind done. the highest elevations will be the last ones to see it end. that wind will be persistent. 15, 20, gusting to 30. madison, yancey, mitchell, avery, northern haywood, northern swain.

areas like turquoise is a dusting to half inch at most. wind chills could go as low as 15 below zero in some of the higher elevations tonight. for the mountain communities. it is going to be very cold. then we get a little warmer. above freezing thursday. well above freezing friday. by valentine's day, highs below freezing. lows in the teens. >> tammy: don't forget about your pets. >> jason: make sure they're warm. >> tammy: time to check out "see it, shoot it, send it." bob child sent us this picture. >> frank: check it out. this little squirrel braved the snow to find a snack. i don't think the squirrel minds the snow very much. send us your pictures and video, too.
