coming up, i'll tell you much more about the mix of snow and ice. coming up our, frank. >> frank: drivers across the mountains already had some trouble getting out the door this morning. fresh snow made for slick conditions around asheville. dot crews hit secondary roads. salt sand mixture on steep inclines. several weather related accidents early on. but the problems on area roads actually started very late on friday. one asheville woman experienced first hand the dangers of driving on icy roads. justin hinton joins us live in the kennelworth neighborhood. justin, she lost control and smashed right in to a fence there? >> justin: yeah, that's right. you can actually see some of that aftermath right here. she is okay. after speaking with neighbors we found out she wasn't the only

the overnight hours. odd placed for a parked car but asheville's overnight wicked weather proved too much for hannah shulin. >> pretty much my tires locked up. i ran in to the street sign, right in the intersection. so yeah. that's pretty much what happened. >> justin: she smiles now that she's okay but a scary night when she realizz just how close she'd come to hitting the telephone pole. >> i didn't even realize it until i got out of the car. >> justin: a rough night not just for her but for several others. she struggled to navigate through the area. >> green car, silver car and a red car in the road. >> a couple of signs in different places came down. >> lots of people try to turn on wyoming and didn't make it, it looks like. >> justin: this time around it's a little different.

>> darren: frank, the debate started off on the somber note regarding the death of justice scalia. none of the candidates thought that president obama should appoint a new supreme court justice during election year. now after the question about justice scalia, the debate took an ugly turn between all the candidates. they argued about everything from the invasion in iraq to past supreme court appointments. let's take a look. >> i am sick and tired of him going after my family. my dad is the greatest man alive in my mind. and while donald trump was building a reality tv show, my brother was building a security apparatus to keep us safe. >> i don't know how he knows what i said on univision because

officers went after him, then shot them during the chase. the officers involved are expected to survive. the president of brazil says the zika virus outbreak will not compromise the upcoming olympics in rio. the military and hundreds of thousands of health workers have been mobilized to fight zika. it's mostly harmless to adults but it's been linked to serious birth defects among newborns. a plane was grounded today to lift spirits and boost confidence so that people of all ages with autism might feel comfortable. hope hanselman takes us on board. >> hope: getting to where we need to go often comes with some ups and downs.

the roads begin to now your news 13 skywatch weather. >> karen: the next winter storm right around the corner. accumulated snow and freezing rain making for some very icy, tricky travel. that is going to be felt on monday. before that happens, we have one cold night to get through. this is dangerous cold especially in our northern mountains. this is when you're going to want to wear layers if you have to be out and about, cover exposed skin. check car battery, check on your pets.

because it is cold right now. 20 degrees in asheville. skies are clear. it feels like 10 degrees right now. in the upstate, 28 degrees with the wind chill of 21. viewing area. keeping the eye on the though. as we take a look at the future cast. clear. our winds will continue to come down. much of the overnight is going to remain clear. that is going to allow our temperatures to drop off by day break. but by day break we are going to have cloud cover through the region. cloudy and cold valentine's day. late afternoon we could see some of those late snow showers beginning. mainly in the higher elevations north of i-40. keep that in mind if you're going out to dinner tomorrow night. you may want to do that sooner rather than later. tomorrow night in to monday morning, this is when we're going to see that snow rolling

making for one messy monday morning commute. especially in the mountains with that snow coming down steadily and accumulated. look how long the arrows are. it's going to be windy. so much of this is going to be blowing snow. purple over the foothills and the upstate. that is ice. a wintery mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain as we go through the day monday and warm up a little. we're going to see more of this wintery mix, including ice, snow, and rain before this system finally moves out in the form of rain. snow fall totals. we do have plenty to deal with. one to three inches in and around asheville. higher totals in some of our western mountain counties. six to eight inches in our northern mountain locations and highest peaks, the great smoky mountains national park. also ice. we are looking at accumulating ice with the heaviest accumulations happening in the foothills, areas south and east
