i'm justin hinton. >> frank: who will nominate antonin skal . now from western north carolina's news leader, this is news 13 at 6:00. >> frank: we begin tonight with threatening weather. word of winter storm warnings and advisories that are starting right now. let's get to meteorologist karen wynne for the latest on snow moving in to the mountains. >> karen: right, frank. we do have that winter storm warning for our northern mountain counties, also mcdowell and burke counties. that includes the cities of marion, morganton. this is where travel is expected to get quite dangerous with accumulating snow and ice as we go through the overnight and then on through tomorrow.

area, this is a weather advisory. this is where travel is going to be tricky. we could see some snowfall accumulations and icing. then we head down south. a freezing rain advisory in the hot pink area. all these advisories are in effect through tomorrow night. we see on our radar right now most of the snow is just in our extreme northern mountain locations around spruce pine, northern yancey and mitchell counties right now. however, as we put the future radar in to motion, well let's see, we see it eventually beginning to fill in from the west as well. so as we go through the overnight, we're going to see more of those snow showers begin to fly. meanwhile the current temperatures a big range. burnsville 18. asheville a cold 22. warmer conditions out west. bryson city 32.

your evening planner is going to be a cold one with those snow showers ramping up. flurries at nine. a knew snow showers at 11 o'clock. we are going to see and mainly cloudy. moisture is going to kick in a little bit later. i'll break it down hour by hour in a few minutes. >> frank: so this latest winter blast is making its way toward us right now and it will be bringing snow and ice. news 13's justin hinton joins us live from i-26 and madison county. justin, what are you seeing out there right now? >> justin: we've been out here a couple of hours, frank. we've been seeing flurry off and . the roads look pretty good. that's because dot crews have been out and about ahead of that

we've seen several trucks out there treating the roads. with the recent snow fall, there are lots of beautiful views. but for some folks, it's a quick view then back home. >> right now the road's not bad at all. you don't want to get in the snow, i mean, it's not a good time to be without right now. >> justin: he's taking his own advice and heading straight home. for that is because what's expected to come with that snow and ice. justin hinton, news 13. >> frank: we have new details in a suspicious death case that is now a murder. 29-year-old james norton is charged with first degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. the body of 62 year-old kristina kesinger was found.

deputies located norton yesterday and took him in to custody. he is being held in the buncombe county jail tonight without bond. we have new information in a story we've been following out of oconnee county. investigators have ruled also in oconnee county, the man is arrested after the standoff with sheriff deputies there. david brown is charged with domestic violence. authorities responded to a call around 3 this morning. he barricaded himself inside but later surrendered. the death of an asheville man brings voice to the

smoke, by some. as many as 18 cities in that region expect record breaking low temperatures today. that is so cool. and i do not mean the temperature. the temperature's awful cold. here's meteorologist karen wynne. >> karen: we're already very, very cold. now we have the leading edge of our next system in the northern mountains. snow all the way from hot springs through burnsville and spruce pine. big impacts are going to be snow and freezing rain for this storm.

now your news 13 skywatch weather. >> karen: with that winter storm warning in effect for our northern mountain counties, as well as mcdowell and burke counties. here is the time line of this winter storm. overnight we're going to see the snow pick up across the mountains. heaviest snow to the north and east of asheville. monday morning we're going to see that snow turn over to a wintery mix later on in the morning. in the afternoon it will be a wintery mix changing over to rain. with all of this there's going to be blowing snow, icy road conditions. travel is definitely going to be a challenge. right now cloudy and cold in asheville. 22 degrees. southeast winds at 6.

it's not that windy, we have a wind chill of 14. in greenville, cloudy and cold. also to wrap up your valentine's day at 29 degrees. wind chill feeling like 20. i have a couple of future cast models to show you. the first one, the bigger picture. chilly air. this area of high pressure. it certainly has kept us so very cold. of course we have the moisture on the move. during the overnight we'll see that snow move in during the day with this front and temperatures warming up. turning over to a wintery mix. then over to all rain. monday night on in to tuesday morning, we could see periods of heavy rain. then tuesday later in the day, we get a break. however, we have a clipper system on the way that's going to come rolling in late tuesday. by wednesday morning, we could get a few more brief light snow showers in the higher

hour by hour, a closer look. snow is going to be going on heaviest in the foothills and northern mountains. but we do see some pockets of snow in and around asheville. then we go on in to the afternoon. we see it changing over to sleet and freezing rain. we could see some light ice accumulations. the heaviest icing, though, expected to be over the foothills and the northern mountains before it all changes back over to rain and then eventually we have that clipper system moving in late tuesday on in to wednesday. but that does not last very long. now i had revised snow fall totals with the change in this path here. the heaviest totals about three to five inches in our northern mountain counties. the areas under that warning. in buncombe county, the aqua shaded area, one to three inches. lighter totals in the light shaded area. lows tonight.

coming up slightly as we go overnight. low of 25 in franklin. greer 27. highs tomorrow are going to be warmer in our western mountain counties making it in to the lower 40s in places like franklin. the next seven days of course tricky travel. dangerous travel at times with the icing on the roads. be very careful on monday. but late monday things get a lot better with the changing over to rain. tuesday should be a day of rain. we have that slick wednesday morning commute. but then drying out and turning much warmer later in the week. here's a quick look at that upstate seven day forecast. be really careful on the roads if you have to be out. >> frank: make sure you've got the kit in the car. full gas tank. >> karen: blankets and take your time out there.

today was qualifying for the daytona 500. 20-year-old rookie chase elliot, the son of bill elliot. chase showed off all of his skills today by posting the fastest qualifying time. he becomes the youngest driver to ever win a pole position. it's the first pole position in chase elliot's young career. only elliot and matt kenseth. daytona 500 will be next sunday, february 21st at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. the boys carolina day basketball team and the girls basketball team won thorough games on saturday. christ school beat asheville christian academy. tennessee recruit john led the way with 17 points.
